Gladys Faye Bowens

MALLORY — Gladys Faye Bowens, of Mallory, died Dec. 19, 2013.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, and funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at Taplin Freewill Baptist Church. Burial is in Highland Memory Gardens, Pecks Mill.

Jeanette F. Compton

MULLENS — Jeanette Faye Compton, 70, of Mullens passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2013, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness.

Born November 24, 1943, at Yukon, McDowell County, WV. She was the daughter of the late Victor B. and Sybil (Sampson) Lawson.

Jeanette was a hard worker throughout her lifetime and had been a caregiver for her husband, Al, during his eight-year illness. She was also a caregiver for her entire family and in her leisure she enjoyed spending time with her family and especially enjoyed time spent camping with family at Stephens Lake.

In addition to her parents she is also preceded in death by her husband, Elder Alford “Al” Compton; three sisters, Glenda Lawson, Vickie Lynn Sizemore, and Phyllis A. Williams; one brother, Arnold Compton; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Compton; and a stepgrandson Jonathan Compton.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Dave Thomas and his wife, Misty, of Mullens; three stepsons, Clyde A. Compton and his wife, Hazel, of Richlands, VA, Carl W. Compton and his wife, Tina, of Bud, and Cecil Compton and his wife, Sandy, of Corinne; fourteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; four sisters, Betty Goad and her husband, Lawrence, of Mullens, Lois Presley of Mullens, Brenda Salango and her husband, Tom, of Hurricane, and Carol McKinney and her husband, Calvin, of Charleston; two brothers, Donnie Lawson and his wife, Linda, of Mullens and Ronnie Lawson and his wife, Natalie, of Randleman, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be 12 noon Monday, December 23, 2013, at the Mullens Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Lewis Arnold officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Bill Clarence Lester Jr.

YORK, S.C. — Bill Clarence Lester, Jr., 71, of York, SC, formerly of Oceana, WV, passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2013.

Born August 12, 1942, at Pineville, WV, he was a son of the late Bill Clarence Lester and Edna Louise Spencer Lester.

Bill was a coal miner and served his country proudly in the United States Air Force.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Reitha Illene Lester, and a brother, Jimmy Lester.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Kathy Lynn Stewart and Bill Clarence Lester and wife, Anita; grandchildren, Hope Marie Stewart, Nathan Michael Stewart, Kevin Thomas Stewart, Megan Brooke Lester, Chelsea Ragan Lester, Chandler Ryan Lester, and Dylan Thomas Lester; two sisters, Betty Milam and Janet Barber.

Services to celebrate the life of Bill Clarence Lester, Jr., will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, December 22, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Erwin Gregory officiating. Following the services Bill will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Leo Long

Leo Long of Clear Creek, WV, passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2013, at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley following a long illness.

Born on June 26, 1941, he was the son of the late Roy Long and Arbutis Stover Long. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Debora Long Stapleton, a grandson Ronald Lee Maynor, and three brothers, Earl, Howard, and James Long.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Nancy Carroll Long, a daughter, Nancy Lee Burgess and her husband Fred of Artie, WV, two granddaughters, Ramona Schoolcraft and her husband Mike of Artie, and Emily Stapleton of Shady Spring. Three grandsons, Blake Maynor and his wife Robin of Clear Creek, Michael Stapleton and his wife Lisa of Beckley, and Cody Stapleton also of Beckley.

A special granddaughter-in-law, Helen Maynor and her fiancé Daniel Williams of Bolt. Four great-granddaughters, Katie, Cheyene, Autumn, and Desiree, and five great-grandsons, Tyler, Eric, Jeremiah, Hunter, and Austin. The family gives a special thank you to our special friends, Paul and Donna Stover, and Dr. E.J. Salon and nurse Pandy.

Leo was a retired coal miner, retiring from Consol Roland Mine Local #1330. He suffered from a broken heart after the death of his grandson Ronald Lee Maynor who lost his life in the UBB explosion on April 5, 2010, and the sudden death of his daughter Debora Stapleton.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Sunday, December 22, 2013, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Greg Scarbro, Pastor Ken Souder and Rev. Harold Williams officiating. Burial will follow at the Stover Cemetery at Burrell Branch. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Lorene ‘Granny’ Forren-Perdue

Lorene “Granny” Forren-Perdue, 83, of Mabscott passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2013.

Born March 3, 1930, at East Beckley to the late Perry Judson Meadows and the late Littie Blanch Lilly Meadows.

Granny lived life to the fullest, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she never met a stranger. She was of the Baptist Faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two husbands, Edgar M. Forren and Walter P. Perdue; brother, Joseph Floyd Meadows; sisters, Helen Mahone, Mary Lee Bennett, Evelyn Cowen, Beulah Taylor, Bobbie Jean Lilly; a son, John Millard Forren; granddaughter, Tammy Forren Shannon; and two sets of twin granddaughters.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sister, Margaret Ann Lafferty; children, Frances Lorene Forren (Tuffy), Carolyn Lyvonn Catlett (Jimmy), Patricia Ann Norris (Jerry Basham); grandchildren, Randall Mason McKinney, Regina Lynn Sexton (Dale), Jimmy Wayne Miller (Donnie), Jamie Michelle Vass (Adam), George Curtis Fox, John Millard Forren, II, Theresa Ewing Becker; stepchildren, Trina Marie Tarpley (Kell), Brett Scott Forren (Patsy), and George Lacy Forren; 14 great grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; extended family and a host of friends who will miss her dearly.

Donald Preston ‘Don’ Renfro

MAPLE FORK — Donald Preston “Don” Renfro, 79, of Maple Fork, WV, died Thursday, December 19, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, WV.

Born August 16, 1934, at Oak Hill, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Blaine Preston and Mae Matheny Renfro.

He was the retired owner of Hunting and Fishing Warehouse at Maple Fork, and formerly worked as a welder at Long-Airdox Co. in Oak Hill and Perry-Hylton at Mabscott.

Don was a member of the Kilsyth Free Will Baptist Church and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Pat Stone Renfro; three daughters, Donna Lee Adkins of Beckley, Debra McDaniel and husband, Dave, of Kearnersville, NC, and Denise Renfro of Maple Fork; his grandson, Donald Shuck, who served as his caregiver; two sisters, Lyda Kessler and husband, Tom, of Maple Fork and Eileen Ewing of Beckley; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank his doctor, Dr. Olu Sangodeyi, and the staff of Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital and the Bowers Hospice House for their care during Don’s illness.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, December 23, at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope with Rev. Bill Bennett and Rev. Jim Sturgill officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.

RAINELLE — Robert Carl Ripley Sr., 89, of Rainelle, passed away Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013.

Bessie Viola Rudisill

BARGER SPRINGS — Bessie Viola Rudisill, 95, of Barger Springs went home to be with the Lord Thursday, December 19, 2013, at Summers County Appalachian Regional Hospital following a short illness.

Born April 28, 1918, at Barger Springs, she was a daughter of the late Harmon and Lilly Tabor.

Bessie was a member of the Rollynsburg Baptist Church. She was a former employee of the State Women’s Prison at Pence Springs, Chestnut Lodge Mental Hospital in Rockville, MD, and had also worked as a social worker for mental health department in Summers County. Bessie enjoyed living on her farm and being outdoors, flower gardening and spending time with family and friends.

Other than her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Bernard Rudisill; one granddaughter, Linda Lou Rudisill; one great-granddaughter, Amy Calendine; one brother, Harmon Tabor Jr.; and one sister, Mary Ann Gwinn.

Those left to cherish her memory include one son, Chester B. Rudisill and companion Teresa Clayton; two daughters, Delma Ciesielski and Brenda Rudisill; eleven grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, thirty-one great-great-grandchildren, two sisters, India Rudisill and Genevieve Wood, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, December 21, 2013, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Dana Stalnaker officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral parlors.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Velma Irene Harmon Terry

Velma Irene Harmon Terry, 86, passed away December 18, 2013. She was born May 14, 1927, to the late John and Sylvia Prince Angyn Harmon.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by brothers, Raymond Harmon, Carlos Harmon, Orville Harmon; sister, Effnie Whitt.

Velma never met a stranger; she deeply loved and enjoyed her church family, watching old movies and taking rides to look at the scenery. She was a Member of the North Sand Branch Worship Center.

Those left to cherish her memory are son, Raynard C. Barrett; granddaughter, Bonnie Barrett; grandson, Henry Barrett; great-grandson, Justin Hall; and a host of friends and church family.

A special thanks is given to her care takers, Ruth and Greg Graef, Vera Plumley, Dr. Jaffary and Dr. Powers and the staff of Stanaford Medical Clinic.

Service will be 6:30 Sunday, December 22, at North Sand Branch Worship Center with Pastor Ken Souder and Rev. Greg Graef officiating.

Friends may call from 5:30 until the time of the service at the church.

In lieu of flower donations can be made in Velma’s memory to the North Sand Branch Worship Center Building Fund.

Carol Elizabeth Yeager

Carol Elizabeth Yeager, 78, of Beckley went home to be with the Lord, on Thursday, December 19, 2013, in Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness.

Born October 21, 1935, in Coal City, Carol was the daughter of the late Orville and Mavis McQuade Farley.

Carol was a graduate of Morris Harvey College. She retired from the Raleigh County Board of Education, where she was a teacher for many years, last working at Lincoln Elementary. Carol dedicated her life to the betterment of all children. She loved teaching children in the classroom, as well as the children in the AWANA program that she taught at her church. Carol dearly loved children. Carol was a longtime member of the Sophia First Baptist Church, where she served in many different ministries in the church. When her health made it difficult for her to attend, she began a card ministry to continue to be a blessing to her church family.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years Gene Yeager, her sisters Doris Decker, and Eleanor Large.

Those left to cherish her memory include her five children: Diana Waddell and her husband Duke, Bob Alderman and his wife Kay, Marsha Mclemore and her husband Terry, Tim Alderman and his fiancée Sonya, and Leisa Moore, and her husband Brad, 10 Grandchildren, 14 Great-grandchildren, her brother Sonny Farley and his wife Carol, and a host of nieces, nephews, beloved church family, and many friends.

Carol’s Home going will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Monday, December 23, 2013, at the Sophia First Baptist Church with her pastor Rev. Charles Gilbert officiating. Following the service she will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Friends can gather with the family from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday evening at Blue Ridge Funeral Home.
