Hazel Virginia Copeland Ferguson

GREENVILLE — Hazel Virginia Copeland Ferguson, born June 8, 1925, and passed away Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013.

A strong and determined woman is one of the greatest blessings from God. Our mother, grandmother and great-grand mother was a true blessing.

At a time when others would have chosen to split us apart, Mother never considered it. Keeping her seven children together and raising them on her own was difficult, however she chose to raise us as a loving family. Our mother never took the easy way out. She quietly did what she felt was the right thing to do, no matter what. She was a divorced mother of seven and though times were trying and difficult, she raised us well! For this, we are truly grateful.

She was born Hazel Virginia Copeland to Bernice May Harvey Copeland and Charles “Roy” Copeland of Rock Camp W.Va. in 1925.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Otis Lee Copeland of Alabaster, Ala. and Kyle Edward Copeland of Kings Mountain, N.C.; two grandchildren Billy Joe Rogers and Christina Leigh Turner and one great grandchild, Ashton Tyler Lucas.

Hazel leaves to cherish her memory, and admire the strength and courage she showed throughout her life, her children: Betty Kay and Rev. James W. Rogers of Greenville, W.Va., Roger D. and Audrey “Jean” Ferguson of Narrows, Va.; Norman W. and Arlene Ferguson of Narrows, Va., Sherlyn “Sherry” and Clyde Shrewsbury of Peterstown W.Va.; Cathy May and Daniel “Danny” Tickle of Peterstown, Valerie and Don Orth of Pembroke, Va. and Lesa Myers and Jeff Wynn of Blacksburg, Va.

Left to cherish her memory are her siblings; Violet May “Sis” Wiseman and husband Frank of Oakton, Va. and Roy Edwin “Eddie” Copeland and wife, Louise of Cheyenne, Wyo. Sisters-in-law are Wanda Copeland of Alabama and Doris Copeland of Princeton, W.Va.

During her 88 years, Hazel was blessed with 24 grand-children and step grandchildren: Karen, Kandi Jo, Krystal, Roger II, Brian, Becky, Aaron, Brett, Wesley, Stacey, Shelley, David, Daniel, Tori, Amber, Chad, Ryan, Molly, Benjamin, Samuel, Shana, Keira, Ben and Hannah.

In addition, Hazel was blessed with 27 great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren that she dearly loved.

Grandsons will be serving as pallbearers.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Friday, December 20, 2013, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown, with Pastor James W. Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in the Ellison Cemetery, Rock Camp.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at the funeral home.
