Dakota Wayne Cales

Dakota Wayne Cales, 20-day-old son of Casey D. Cales and Tiffany G. Whitt of Hinton, died Friday, July 5, 2013.

Graveside service and burial will be 1 p.m. Monday, July 8, at the Cales Cemetery at Chestnut Mt. with Evangelist Patricia Cales officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral parlors.

Sherry Rawls Cooper

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Sherry Rawls Cooper, 44, of Chapel Hill, NC, formerly of Stanaford, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 4, 2013, after a long battle with cancer. Born August 1, 1968, she was a daughter of Jerry and Jewell Rawls.

Sherry loved her family and friends and loved to ride horses. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1986. She was employed at the UNC Hospital in the telecommunications department.

Sherry is preceded in death by her Paternal Grandparents, Harris and Hattie Rawls; Maternal Grandparents, Lonnie and Nina Adkins.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 26 years, Steven Cooper, of Chapel Hill, NC; son, Justin Cooper, of Chapel Hill, NC; sisters, Tina Buckland and husband Jason, of Coal City, Pam Liszka of Beckley; nieces, Delaney Buckland, of Coal City, Sheena Hatcher, of Beckley, Violet Cole, of Beckley, and Ciara Cole, of Beckley.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Roger E. Pauley officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Friends may gather with the family one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Jackie ‘Jack’ Ervin Crawford

Jackie “Jack” Ervin Crawford, 54, of Cool Ridge, passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital following a short illness.

He was born on September 21, 1958, in Beckley, a son to the late John Edward Crawford and Virginia Crawford Rutledge.

Jack had worked for the state road as a laborer years ago. When able, he attended the Fairview Freewill Baptist Church. He enjoyed shooting pool, fishing, and riding his motorcycle.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his stepfather, William “Bill” Rutledge; 4 sisters, Virginia Sue Berry, Frances Jewel Porter Walker, Rebecca Lee, and Jewel Crawford; and a brother, Johnny Edward Crawford; nephew, Christopher “Cricket” Crawford, who was the son of Carlos Crawford; and a niece, Erin Crawford, who was the daughter of Johnny Crawford.

Survivors include a brother, Carlos Crawford of Shady Spring; sister, Rebecca Austin and husband Thomas of Cool Ridge; nieces and nephews, Thomas Austin and Kimberly Austin (Daniels) of Shady Spring, Aireona Porter (Hutchens), Blaine Porter and Jarrod and Jordon Peters of Cool Ridge, Rick and Jason Crawford formerly of Shady Spring and Jeff Berry formerly of Beckley; great-nieces and nephews include Megan, Jonathan, Gavin, and Garrett Austin, Kristen Crawford, and Zoey and Joseph (J.R.) Hutchens; great-great-niece, Deliah Mullens; and a host of other family and friends.

Services to celebrate the life of Jack will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at the Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel with Pastor Charlie Tilley officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Pallbearers will be Delano Walker, Tex Hornsby, Carl Buckland, Joey Hutchens, Travis Bolen, and Gary Smith.

Visitation will be held on Monday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

John Vincent Forte

MORGANTOWN — John Vincent Forte, 63, of Morgantown, W.Va., formerly of Beaver, W.Va., died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Mon General Hospital.

John is the son of the late John and Jennie Rogers Forte and was born in Morgantown, on November 8, 1949.

John graduated from Fairmont State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Education and from West Virginia University with a Master of Arts in Safety.

John was a member of St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church in both Morgantown and Beckley. He had resided in Morgantown since 2009. John spent 30 distinguished years with the U.S. Department of Labor Mine Safety and Health Administration as a Training Specialist at the Mining Academy in Beaver. His Academy co-workers were very dear to him and he considered them family. John will always be remembered for his kind and loving ways by all of those who cherished him.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Carol Gapen Forte, beloved daughter, Ashlee Walls and her husband Chris of Charleston, W.Va.; brother Anthony Forte and fiancée Patricia Thompson of Fairmont, W.Va.; mother-in-law, Alice Gapen of Morgantown; nieces, Stacey Rogers and her husband Greg and Stephanie Neason and her husband Robbie, both of Grafton, W.Va.; nephew, Anthony Forte Jr. of Grafton; three great-nieces and one great-nephew and many other dear friends and family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Tony Forte, in 1941; a loving father-in-law, Charles “Chuck” Gapen of Dilliner, Pa., in 2002, and loving brother-in-law, Charles “Chuck” R. Gapen of Morgantown, in 1997.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in John’s memory.

Family and friends will be received at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 1 Guthrie Lane, Morgantown, W.Va., on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial with Father Mark G. Ward, CP, VF, as celebrant. McCulla Funeral Home is in charge of cremation services which will take place after the service. Private inurnment will take place at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens at a later date.

Susan Francis Gibler

GLEN FORK — Susan Francis Gibler, 59, of Glen Fork, WV, passed away Friday, July 5, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House.

Born September 13, 1953, at Welch, WV, she was the daughter of the late Chester Malachi and Edna Elaine Bailey Barnett.

Susan was a LPN working at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital for many years. She enjoyed reading and working crossword puzzles. Susan loved animals and gardening and she enjoyed spending time with and getting to know people. She was a veteran of the U.S. Army. The family would like to give special thanks to Terry and Elaine Barnett for their support and to Bowers Hospice House for their incredible care in Susan’s final days.

She is survived by daughters, Chris Cost and husband Jonathan, Stacey Gibler; son, Jason Gibler; grandchildren, Jonah Cost, Julianne Cost; sister, Theresa Okes and husband Gary; brothers, Terry Barnett and wife Elaine, Chet Barnett and wife Debbie; 10 nieces and nephews as well as numerous other family.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, July 8, 2013, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Paul Bricker officiating. Burial will follow in the Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery in Dunbar. Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. until service time on Monday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Jason Gibler, Chet Barnett, Daniel Barnett, Jonathan Cost, Jonah Cost, Keith Fleming.

BRUNO — Jeremy Darrell “J.D.” Griffin, 27, of Bruno, died Sunday, June 30, 2013.

Jon Guzman

THE PLAINS, Va. — Jon Guzman, age 48, of The Plains, VA, went to be with the Lord on June 28, 2013. He was the son of Mery Figueroa and the late Jonatan Guzman.

He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents Ramon and Ercilia Guzman, a special uncle Angel Guzman, and his father-in-law Randall Reid.

Born in Puerto Cortes, Honduras, C.A., on February 14th, 1965. He resided in Honduras until he came to Columbus, OH, when he was 14. He graduated from the Columbus Alternative High School. He served in the Air National Guard, then completed his Bachelor’s in Business from The Ohio State University.

Jon was survived by his mother Mery of Columbus, OH, grandmother Paula Figueroa of New Orleans, LA. His wife Miranda and 3 children Enrique, JC, and Sebastian Guzman. He will be missed by a huge Figueroa and Guzman family all over the world including half brothers Victor, Guillermo, Fernando, and Rene and their families.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling to see new sites, experiencing other cultures, and was a lifelong learner. He loved to ride his motorcycles. He was an active member of MSTA.

Jon enjoyed his career as a Systems Engineer for Invertix Corp.

He loved going to church. With his family he joined 2nd Baptist Church in Columbus, OH, and Little Zion Baptist in The Plains, VA.

Pastor Samuel Smith from Little Zion will be officiating the *Life Celebration of Jon Guzman* on Monday, July 8th, at 2 p.m. at the Colcord Presbyterian Church in Colcord, WV. All are welcome to attend and the celebration will be followed by a dinner.

Jimmie Orren

Jimmie Orren, 85, of Beckley, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on July 1, 2013, surrounded by his family at the Bowers Hospice House, following an extended illness.

Born January 20, 1928, at Beckley, he was the son of the late Glen Shelton Orren and Grace Lee Sayers Orren.

Jimmie was a 1946 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, where he was a letterman in football and track. He held the 100-yard dash record for more than 30 years and was inducted into the WWHS Football Hall of Fame in 1989. He graduated from Beckley College with a Business Administration degree and was a United States Army/Air Force Veteran.

On December 30, 1946, Jimmie married the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth Pack. To this loving union of 66 1/2 years were born 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Mr. Orren was a cabinetmaker and a true craftsman. He and his wife, Mary, owned and operated Harvey Cabinet & Appliance Co., Inc., of Beckley, WV, from 1968 until his retirement in 2007 at the age of 79. He was a former Board of Directors member and past president of the Southern WV Home Builders Association. He also enjoyed gardening, hunting, sports and he was an avid WVU fan.

He was a founding member of the House of Worship (formerly known as New Covenant Church), 200 S. Kanawha Street, Beckley, WV, established August 25, 1997.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved in-laws James Cyrus (JC) Pack and Alva D. Stover Pack, an infant grandson, Brian Matthew Orren, and 9 brothers and sisters.

Those left to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy include: his wife, Mary; his children: Barbara Elaine Mays and her husband Larry; James Richard (Rick) Orren and his wife Dana Fann, Cynthia (Cindy) Poling and her husband Darl; his grandchildren: John Mays, Eric Mays, Derek Orren, Heather Orren, Sean Poling, and Kaden Fann-Orren; his great-grandchildren: Kendra Mays Pendleton and her husband Adam; Brandon Corey Mays; and Orren Michael Mays; his sister, Faith Flannery; other family members, his church family, friends and his yorkie, Angel.

Private family services officiated by his pastor, Mitch Alkire, and entombment at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Prosperity, WV, took place on Wednesday, July 3, 2013. Pallbearers were Darl and Sean Poling; John, Eric and Corey Mays; and Rick Orren.

The family would like to express extreme gratitude to the dedicated staff of Bowers Hospice House for their exceptional care and compassion during his final days.
