Marsha Brook Webb Adkins

Marsha Brook Webb Adkins, 24, of Dry Creek, passed away Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Eugene Spurlock officiating. Burial will follow in the Cook Cemetery at Arnett. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to service Tuesday.

Sharon Star Allen

Sharon Star Allen, age 60, of Beckley, God called his angel home on Saturday, November 24, 2012.

Born July 12, 1952, in Beckley to the late Ambrose Church and Nellie Chandler Church.

Sharon retired with over 30 years of service to the Raleigh County Board of Education and U.S. Census.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by brothers, Michael and Darrell Church.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Sheri Dawn Tyree and husband Donald Tyree, Jr., of Daniels; sons, James Rickey Adkins, Jr., and wife Denise Clifford Adkins of MacArthur, and Michael Adkins of Beckley; sisters, Gail Newsome and husband John of Beckley, and Lanell Spencer and husband David of Beckley; brothers, Jerry Church and wife Wilma of Princeton, Ambers Junior Church of Washington State, Joseph Lynn Church of Beckley, Darus Dale Church of Montana; grandchildren, Jessica, Amanda, Jordan, Rickey, Ryan, and Racheal; and a great-grandson, Christian; also a host of nieces and nephews whom she loved.

Graveside rites and interment will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity with Pastor Phil Farrington officiating.

There will be no visitation.

PANTHER — Polly Justice Ball, 74, of Panther, passed away Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012.

Pauletta Lynn Bailey Bess

OAK HILL — Pauletta Lynn Bailey Bess, 63, of Oak Hill, died on Sunday, November 25, 2012, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born October 29, 1949, at Oak Hill, she was the daughter of the late Harold D. and Christelle Laverne Slemp Bailey.

Pauletta was a homemaker. She was a 1967 graduate of Collins High School in Oak Hill.

Survivors include her husband, Dennis Edward Bess; three sons, Christopher Via of Oak Hill, Kevin A. Bess of Oak Hill and Craig Bess and wife, Nikie, of Shady Spring; a sister, Phyllis Wallace of New Port News, Va.; and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, November 29, 2012, at 7 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with Pastor Delmas Wolfe officiating.

James E. Dingess

HARTWOOD, Va. — James Edwin Dingess, 72, of Hartwood, passed away Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, at Stafford Hospital in Stafford County, Va.

He was born in Beckley, W.Va., a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Moscoe Dingess and Ruby R. Chrislip Dingess, and his brother, Norman Harold Dingess.

He is survived by his sister Elizabeth “Liz” Pickles (Ron); and his nephews, Robert (Tabitha) Dingess of Hartwood, James (Heather) Dingess of Hartwood, Thomas (Miria) Dingess of Tooele, Utah, David (Elizabeth) Dingess of Front Royal, Va., and Chris Pickles of Kellogg, Iowa.

He was a great Christian man who loved the Lord and will be missed by the children who knew him as the “candy man.”

A service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel in Beckley.

Evelyn R. Edwards

MULLENS — Mrs. Evelyn Rae (Burcham) Edwards, 80, of Mullens, peacefully entered the Kingdom of Heaven, surrounded by her children and loved ones on Saturday, November 24, 2012.

Born January 15, 1932, in Mullens, she was the daughter of the late H.S. and Mary (Hash) Burcham.

Evelyn was a lifelong resident of Mullens, she was a born again Christian, and a member of the Highland Avenue Baptist Church where she was a member of the Chandler Circle and the American Baptist Women, she taught Sunday school and many different age groups for many years, a member of the Choir, a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter #100 where she held many offices and was past Worthy Matron.

Evelyn was an avid bowler and a member of the seniors bowling leagues at both Accu Lanes and Leisure Lanes where she placed 5th in the Nation in the Senior Women’s International Bowling Championship in Buffalo, NY, in 1994.

In addition to her parents she is also preceded in death by the love of her life, Charles J. Edwards Sr., in 1991; five brothers; and two infant sisters.

Those left to cherish her memory include her two sons, Charles Edwards Jr. and his wife, Nancy, and John Edwards and his wife, Marsha; her daughter, Cathy Wilcox and her husband, Randy, all of Mullens; 12 grandchildren, Charles III, Staci, Max, David, Leslie, Stephen, Anna, Andy, Adam, Chad, Mandy, and Matthew; 11 great-grandchildren, Lindsey, Caleb, Joel, Jay, Presli, Kynsli, Aidan, Noah, Audrey, Jacob, and Levi; and a host of special nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at Highland Avenue Baptist Church, with David Pollock, Pastor Vernon Sears, and Rev. Warren Gilpin officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Memorial Park, Princeton.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. Wednesday until time of services at the church.

Order of the Eastern Star Mullens Chapter 100 will conduct Eastern Star rites at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Pallbearers will be Charlie Edwards III, David Edwards, Stephen Edwards, Andrew Johnston, Adam Johnston, and Matthew Wilcox.

ANSTED — James Alan Grimmett, 53, of Ansted, passed away Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012.

Roy Roger McGinnis

2 Timothy 4:7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my race, I have kept the faith.

Roy Roger McGinnis of Dry Creek passed away on November 25, 2012.

He was born December 9, 1940, at Dry Creek; he was the son of Helen (Cook) McGinnis and the late Alfred (Jack) McGinnis.

Other than his father, Roger was preceded by his grandparents Rev. Byrd and Belva Cook of Fairdale, Jim and Rosie McGinnis of Rock Creek, and father and mother-in-law Dewey and Daisy Mae Pettry of Naoma.

Roger graduated from Marsh Fork High, 1960, Concord College at Princeton in 1963, attended Beckley College, West Virginia University and Bethany College. He taught school at Clear Fork High and worked for Beckley Coal Mining. Roger attended the Freewill Baptist Church at Dry Creek. Other than his mother, those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 46 years, Julia (Pettry) McGinnis, a son Mark McGinnis and wife Dawn, daughter Melissa and her husband James Proctor, all from Dry Creek. Six grandchildren who were the apple of his eye: Chelsea, Mikaila, Tristianna and Brennen McGinnis, Johnathon and Bethany Proctor. Also survived by a brother James McGinnis and wife Joyce of Huntington, three sisters Joyce Sabatino, Jacquelyn Whitley, both of Oceana, Betty Cox of Gastonia, N.C.; a special uncle and aunt, Ross and Betty McGinnis of Stickney.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to the loving and caring staff of Heartland Nursing Home of Beckley.

Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. Larry Kinder officiating. Burial will follow in the Pettry-Dickens Cemetery at Pine Knob.

Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home.

MCGRAWS — Michael John McGraw, 65, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012. 

The Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Monsignor Samuel Sacus will be officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary and one hour prior to the services Thursday.

Delma Evelyn Miller

Delma Evelyn Miller, age 85, of Shady Spring, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 25, 2012, at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born on April 10, 1927, in Beaver, she was the daughter of the late Elmer Redden and Liza Redden.

Mrs. Miller was a homemaker, and a member of the Open Door Church at Shady Spring. She had lived most of her life at Shady Spring.

Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by brothers, Oral Redden, Marvin Redden, and Clacy Redden, by a sister Glema Acord, and a great-granddaughter Isabella Wiles.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her husband of 65 years, Ira Miller, her children, Drema Krapf and her husband Howard of Shady Spring, Buster Miller and his wife Imogene of Beckley, and Robert Miller and his wife Marie of Mt. Airy, N.C.; a sister, Mary Acord of Beaver; 10 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren are also among her survivors.

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Delma Miller on Thursday,  November 29, 2012, at 1 p.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel, with her longtime friend Rev. George Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be family members.

Laura Marie Norman

Laura Marie Norman of Beckley, formerly of Spencer, heard God calling so she took His hand and slowly drifted away on Thursday, November 22, 2012, at the age of 93.

She was preceded in death by her parents Cullie B. and Rosa Ester Hensley. Her devoted husband of 73 years, Silas Paul Norman, her beloved daughter Joyce Ann Elmore of Spencer, brothers: Darris Hensley, Dwight Hensley, Guy H. Hensley, Walter Hensley and Dayton Hensley of Roane County, W.Va.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son Stanley Paul Norman and wife Janet of Beckley. Grandchildren: Phillip Norman and wife Michelle of Beckley, Amanda Norman Ford and husband Brian of Beckley, Darren Elmore of Spencer and Jane Ann Elmore of Myrtle Beach, S.C. Great-Grandchildren: Noah and Emma Grace Norman, Bryce and Kendall Ford of Beckley and Monica Ann Elmore of Spencer. She also leaves behind special nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.

Mrs. Norman was a homemaker who loved to cook for her family, church and community. She never turned a stranger away from her door hungry. She loved the Lord unconditionally and lived every day according to His word by loving her neighbor as herself. While living in Beckley, Mrs. Norman was a member of the Regular Baptist Church.

The family would especially like to thank Mrs. Norman’s earthly angels for their love and special care giving to her during this past year: Betty, Thelma, Lou, Veta, Heather and Bonnie.

Funeral Services will be conducted to celebrate the life of Marie Norman on Friday, November 30, 2012, at the Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home in Spencer, at 2 p.m., with her nephew the Rev. Homer Norman officiating.

Leslie D. Nutter

YORK, Pa. — Pastor Leslie D. Nutter, 71, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012. He was the husband of Frances M. (Wyant) Nutter.

Mr. Nutter was born Jan. 14, 1941, in White Sulphur Springs; he was the son of the late Pastor L.E. and Mary Nutter.

Following graduation from West Virginia University in 1963, Mr. Nutter entered the public accounting profession. In 1969 he entered Grace Theological Seminary earning his M.Div. Degree. While there he pastored Skinner Chapel in Twelve Mile, Ind. He then pastored the Susquehanna GBC in Wrightsville, Pa., for 24 years. He served in a number of leadership positions within the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches. His involvement within the FGBC included camp ministry, church planting, youth ministries, and conference moderator. He was involved with the York Bible Training Institute. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Grace College and Theological Seminary for nine years. He was also a substitute teacher/bus driver in York County. Prior to his passing, he was involved in York Grace Brethren as an elder, Bible teacher, small group leader and served on a number of committees. He enjoyed his family, reading and he had a great sense of humor.

In addition to his wife of 46 years, he will be lovingly missed by his children, daughter, Lynette Hoover and husband, Gary, of Red Lion, Pa., and son, Scott and wife, Jennifer, of Fishers, Ind., and his four grandchildren, Hanna and Madelyn Hoover and Jeremy and Emily Nutter. He has a brother, Newman Nutter, of Poca, W.Va., and a sister, Glee Nutter, of White Sulphur Springs.

He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Lambuth, and his sister, Sandra.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at the York Grace Brethren Church, 661 N. Newberry St., York, Pa. (across from Kiwanis Lake). Pastors Kenneth Cosgrove and Daniel White will officiate. Private interment will be at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens.

Friends are invited to meet with the family at the church from 9:30 to 11 a.m. before the memorial service.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Timothy Stewart passed away on Friday, Nov. 23, 2012.

Mr. Stewart was born on May 9, 1956, in Beckley.

Timothy lived in Jacksonville for the past 10 years.

He was also a member of American Post Legion 316 S.A.L.

Mr. Stewart was predeceased by his father, Harry C. Stewart.

Survivors include his mother, Mary Stewart of Jacksonville; brothers, Kelly, Mark, Jack, Glenn; sister, Kathy; and several nephews and nieces.

There will be a visitation at Beaches Memorial Park “Chapel of Peace,” 1500 Main Street, Atlantic Beach, FL 32233, on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, beginning at 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Service will follow the conclusion of the visitation. Rev. Dan Ratchford will be officiating. Interment will follow at Beaches Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Lillia F. Thomas, 97, of Beckley, passed away Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012.

Harry Todd

Harry Todd of Shady Spring passed away Saturday, November 24, 2012.

Born on February 24, 1937, in Whitesville, W.Va., he was the son of the late Lonnie and Nellie Simmons Todd.

He was preceded in death by brothers Charles Todd of Scott Depot, W.Va., and Glenn Todd of Warner Robins, Ga.

Upon graduation from Trap Hill High School in 1954, Mr. Todd joined the United States Air Force. After his discharge from his military duty, he attended Beckley College and later graduated from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich. His career was spent in the sales and marketing fields, mostly in Nashville, TN.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 53 years, Ellen McGinnis Todd; his daughter, Lori Todd of Nashville, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Rachel Lauren Chan, also of Nashville; a brother, Larry Todd and his wife, Brenda, of Beckley; several nephews and nieces.

Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, November 28, 2012, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley. In keeping with Harry’s wishes, he will be cremated.
