Mark A. Crawford

HINTON — Mark A. Crawford, 63, of Hinton, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2013 following a long illness.

Mr. Crawford was born March 5, 1950 in Clifton Forge, Va., fourth son of the late Francis and Lillie Mae Oliver Crawford of Hinton.

After finishing high school in 1968, Mr. Crawford served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, was severely wounded in combat, and was later active as a Disabled American Veteran. Mark was a member of the Camon Baptist Church and Second Baptist Church in Hinton and began each day studying his Bible. He was an avid chess player, passing his knowledge on to multiple youth in the community. He loved to stargaze and often had his telescope positioned alongside State Street. Above all, Mark loved children and even though he was not a father himself, he chose to “father” many less fortunate youngsters in the community whose physical needs were not being met.

He was preceded in death by brother Roger Crawford and sisters Rachel Crawford, Angelia Crawford, and Nora Sembly.

Survivors include brothers Retired Lt. Col. Francis E. Crawford of Springfield, Va., Retired Lt. Col. Rosco D. Crawford and wife Janice of Annadale, Va., and Robin S. Crawford and wife Patricia of Hinton, as well as many much-beloved nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton. Reverend Matthew Saunders will officiate. Burial will follow at the Esquire Cemetery in Hinton.

Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, at the funeral home.
