Darlene C. Bailey

UNION — Darlene C. Bailey, 58, of Union, passed away Thursday, June 27, 2013.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, June 30, at the Hollywood Tabernacle at Hollywood, with the Rev. Marva and Mark Smearman officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery at Union. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Groves Funeral Home in Union and one hour prior to the services at the Tabernacle.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105-3678.

Groves Funeral Home in Union is in charge of arrangements.



U.S. Army Ret. Sgt. 1st Class Robert ‘Bob’ Ford

U.S. Army Retired Sergeant 1st Class Robert “Bob” Ford, 81, of Beckley, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at the VA Hospital in Beckley following a short illness.

Born May 5, 1932, in Scarbro, W.Va., to the late Lundy Ford and Edith Thompson Ford.

Bob enjoyed wood working and was with the United States Army for over 22 years of service. Early on in his military career he was a drill sergeant and then when honorably discharged he earned the rank as Sergeant 1st Class. During the Korea 3rd Infantry and Vietnam 1st Armored Calvary Division where he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, and Air Medal. He was a member of the Kenneth Shadrick Korean War Association, Beckley Chapter. He was retired from the Fayette County Courthouse as a maintenance worker and was a proud member of North Beckley Church of Christ.

Those surviving include his wife of 29 years Mrs. Lana Jordan Ford; son, Robert L. Ford Jr. and wife Anita of Sibley, LA; stepdaughter, Kelly Jordan Hinzman and husband Richard of Stafford, VA; brother, David Ford and wife Carol of Scarbro; sisters, Deloris and Don Hall of Riverton, WY, and Patsy Moody of Oklahoma; grandchildren, Daniel Ford, Jordan Hinzman, Kayla Hinzman, and honorary grandson JD Walker; and also a host of nieces and nephews.

Services to celebrate the life of Bob will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 30, 2013, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley with Minister Adam Davis officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity where the American Legion Honor Guard Beckley Post 32 will conduct final military graveside rites.

The gentlemen serving as pallbearers will be Richard Hinzman, Jordan Hinzman, Robert Hinzman, JD Walker, Andrew Hashimura, and Kevin Taylor.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers donations will be greatly appreciated to the Beckley VA Hospital.

Billy Glinden Harrah

Billy Glinden Harrah, 88, of Beaver, passed away at his home on Thursday, June 27, 2013.

Born on December 13, 1924, at Cranberry, he was the son of the late Jesse Harrah Sr. and Evelyn Buckland Harrah Adkins, and was the stepson of the late Luther Adkins.

Mr. Harrah was a retired coal miner, and was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. He had made his home at Beaver for the past 13 years, having lived most of his life at Cranberry.

Mr. Harrah was a member of the UMWA, and attended the Beckley Church of God.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Evelyn Deeds, by a brother Harry Harrah, and by grandchildren Steven Brown and Cheryl Harrah.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years Sally Bolen Harrah; the mother of his children, Norma Raines of Crab Orchard; four sons, Billy Glinden Harrah III and his wife Donna of Danville, Va., Richard Harrah and his wife Veronica of Sprague, David Harrah of Beckley and Jesse Harrah and his wife Shelia of Conway, S.C.; two daughters, Brenda Heath of Crab Orchard and Jackie Crouch of Lorain, Ohio; a stepson, James R “Jim” Ball of Daniels; his special care-giver and Jim’s companion Ruth McMillion of Daniels. Nine grandchildren, including two whom they help raise, Emily Suddreth, and Abigail Suddreth, and a host of great-grandchildren.  

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Monday, July 1, 2013, at 11 a.m. with Bishop F.D. Sexton officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, W.Va. American Legion Post #32 Honor Guard will conduct military graveside rites.

Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Pallbearers will be family members.

SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. — Franklin Harvey Henderson, 76, formerly of Lester, died Saturday, June 22, 2013.

The body was cremated and arrangements were made by Johnson and Johnson Funeral Home in Locust Grove, Va.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Freeman Wiley Holder, formerly of Columbia, Tenn., died Wednesday, June 26, 2013.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, at the Shockley Hill Church of Christ Cemetery at Tug Creek. Friends may gather at 12:30 p.m. at the cemetery.

Edith Ann Pettry

Edith Ann Pettry, of Dry Creek, died Thursday, June 27, 2013, at CAMC Memorial Hospital in Charleston, W.Va.

She was born December 18, 1938, in Prenter, W.Va., a daughter of the late Emery and Mabel Pittsonberger.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lena Wiseman; and two brothers James and Roby Lee Pittsonberger.

Edith loved going to Myrtle Beach and loved all flowers. She took great pride in all of her grandchildren and taking care of them.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Pettry; children, Janie and Ed Price of Charleston, W.Va., Renee Pettry of Richmond, Va., Stanley and Lisa Pettry of Lawrenceburg, Ky.; grandchildren, Ryan Pettry, Christian Dickens, Charles Ashley Dickens, Anna Noel and Derek Franklin; two twin great-grandchildren, Drew Christian Dickens and Chloe Lynn Dickens.

Funeral Services will be held 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, June the 30th, 2013, at the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, W.Va., with David Pettry, CLP, officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the Pettry Cemetery in Dry Creek.

Armstrong Funeral Home in Whitesville is serving the Pettry family.

George W. ‘Buck’ Ray

George W. (Buck) Ray died Thursday, June 27, 2013, following a long illness.

Born November 27, 1933, at Keyrock, he was the son of the late Roy Ray and Naoma Britton.

George was a supervisor at S & C Electric Company in Chicago, Ill., for 37 years. George was also a Veteran from the Korean War. He was a loving husband and father.

George was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Wanda P. Ray, and sister, Minnie L. Reedy.

Those left to cherish his memory include three children, Richard Ray of Antioch, Ill., Drema K. Parker of Russellville, Ala., and husband Patrick, David D. Ray of Antioch, Ill., and wife, Laureen; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Kimberly L. Ray of Florida; great-granddaughter, Brianna Powers, Samantha Ray of Illinois; great-granddaughters, Meah, Mariah, Maleagh; Michael Ray of Alabama, Shane Harper of Alabama, Steven Harper and wife Desiree; great-grandson, Marc of Colorado; Kenny Harper and wife, Ashley; great-grandson, Clayton of Alabama; granddaughter, Savannah, and grandson, Garrett, of Ill.; sister, Mary Hatfield and husband, Ed, of Mabscott; brother, Coy Ray of Jesse.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 30, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Rev. Gary Ford officiating and Steve Ford as soloist. Burial will follow at Keyrock Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Friends may gather with the family Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Betty Rose ‘Dolly’ Syner

EDMOND — Betty Rose “Dolly” Syner, 83, of Edmond, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2013.

Bart ‘Battie’ Twohig

PARMA, Ohio — Bart (Battie) Twohig, 93, of Parma, formerly of Springdale, passed away Monday, May 27, 2013.

Born April 14, 1920, at Springdale, he was the son of the late Mike and Mary Griffin Twohig.

Battie worked as an engineer for Conrail Railroad in Cleveland, Ohio. He served during WWII in the United States Army. Battie enjoyed spending six winter months at his home in Hudson, Fla.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 39 years, Alva Williams Twohig; his son Donald Twohig; stepsons Kermit and Charles Harrah; and his brother Daniel Bernard Twohig.

Surviving Battie are his daughter Elizabeth Warswick (Ed) of Parma, Ohio; his stepson Earl Cook (Shelba) of Meadow Bridge; his stepdaughter Lula Harrah of Warren, Ohio; stepdaughters-in-law Linda Harrah of Parma, Ohio, and Christine Harrah of Richfield, Ohio; 15 cherished grandchildren; great-grandfather of 30; great-great-grandfather of two; many nieces and nephews; and his many friends from Ohio, West Virginia and Florida.

A Memorial Mass will be 11:30 a.m. Sunday, June 30, in the Springdale Catholic Church. He was buried in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, in Olmsted, Ohio.

Larry Dennis Vass

CIRTSVILLE — We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. II Corinthians 5:8

Larry Dennis Vass, 75, of Cirtsville, died on Friday, June 28, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born Nov. 21, 1937, at Cirtsville, he was the son of the late Luther and Eveleno Berry Vass.

He was a retired surface coal miner for Patience, Inc., of Beckley.

Mr. Vass was a member of the New Prospect Baptist Church, Sweeneysburg, where he served as a Trustee at the church for 20 years.

Two brothers, Jack D. Vass and Earnest B. Vass, and one sister, Ina Mae Bowyer, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Lynn Wilkerson Vass; two sons, Larry Dean Vass and wife, Angela, of Sweeneysburg and Johnny Adair Vass and wife, Karen, of Bradley; a daughter, Debra Spahn of Florida; two brothers, Roy Vass of Cirtsville and Tommy Vass of Cirtsville; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be on Sunday, June 30, 2013, at 2 p.m. at New Prospect Baptist Church in Sweeneysburg with Pastor Gary Williams officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, on Saturday, June 29, 2013, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Grandsons and friends from the church will serve as pallbearers.
