C. Gene Burns

FRANKFORD — C. Gene Burns, 79, of Frankford, died Sunday, April 21, 2013, after an extended illness. Gene quietly passed away at home, after courageously battling Parkinson’s Disease since 1999.

Born March 3, 1934, to the late B.R. Burns and Jessie Thomason Burns.

He graduated from Rupert High School as valedictorian of his class. He attended Concord College in Athens, W.Va. He loved serving the people of Greenbrier County and did so in various capacities. Gene started his political career by serving as Deputy Assessor for five years, then moved to the County Clerks office serving first as Deputy and then as Chief Deputy for almost five years. He served as Sheriff of Greenbrier County from 1968 through 1972. He also worked and served as an officer in the following financial institutions: Bank of Rainelle, First State Bank & Trust, Greenbrier Valley Bank, and Western Greenbrier Bank.

As much as he loved serving the people of Greenbrier County, farming was truly the love of his life. He began farming with his father as a youth and never stopped until he became completely unable physically, a year or so before his death. Even after retirement, he found a way to serve people by accepting a job he thoroughly loved with the Department of Highways. People always found him to be a friend as he was willing to lend a helping hand in times of need.

While living at Kieffer, Gene served the Lord and attended the Beaver Creek Baptist Church. After moving to Frankford, he faithfully attended the Henning Church of God and served in various leadership roles until his health prohibited him from attending the last few months of his life.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary Ethel Jordan, brothers, W.F. (Billy) Burns, Cary L. Burns and B. Ray Burns.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Martha (Marty) L. Burns; a daughter, Gina Beth Burns Knapp of Montuale, Va.; a grandson, Jordan Carl Talor of Montuale; and sister-in-law, Joan Burns of Rainelle.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at the Henning Church of God on Vago Road in Frankford. Services will be held at the church on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at 11 a.m., with Pastors Robert Hefner Jr. and Danny Goins officiating. Burial will follow in the Henning Church of God Cemetery.

Arrangements by McCraw Funeral Home.
