Dorothy ‘Dot’ B. Jeter

Dorothy “Dot” B. Jeter, 88, formerly of Mt. Hope, passed away Monday, June 10, 2013, at The Wyngate Senior Living Community in Barboursville, W.Va.

She was born July 3, 1924, in Keystone, W.Va., a daughter of the late Virginia and R. Gale Kirby.

She resided most of her life in Mt. Hope before moving to Barboursville in 2007. Dot was a graduate of Mt. Hope High School and University of Charleston where she earned a degree in elementary education. She taught many years in the Fayette County school system and was a long time member of the Mt. Hope Baptist Temple.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Robert R. Jeter of Mt. Hope; daughter-in-law, Nancy Jeter; sister, Virginia Edwards; brothers, Roland and Frank Kirby. She is survived by her five children, Robert “Rusty” (Mary) Jeter of Proctorville, Ohio, Barry (Kriss) Jeter of Finleyville, Pa., Jane (Mark) Bailey of Huntington, W.Va., Julie (Frank) Jeter of Mt. Hope, Jon (Amy) Jeter of Finley, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Robert Michael (Amy) Jeter of Las Vegas, Nev., Marla (Tyler) Haslam of Huntington, W.Va., Matthew Bailey of Huntington, W.Va., Sarajane (Brett) Agypt of Sterling, Va., Kati (Will) Holland of Huntington, W.Va., Tristan Jeter of Mt. Hope, Anna Grace (Jay) Copley of Huntington, Ind. and Andrew (Kara) Jeter of Toledo, Ohio; two great grandsons, Jonathan Jeter and Miles Agypt; sister, Jane (Robert) Myers of Midland, Texas, sisters-in-law, Nellie Kirby of Huntington, W.Va., Anna Marie Bottoms of Norfolk, Va.; and a host of nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Friday, June 14, 2013, at Tyree Funeral Home, Mt. Hope, WV 25880, 304-877-6454.

Visitation will precede the services from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Ernest O. ‘Pete’ Marchant

MARION, Va. — Ernest O. “Pete” Marchant, age 81, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2013, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion, Va. 

Mr. Marchant was born in Rhodell, W.Va., to the late Earl F. Marchant and Audrey Irene Mitchell and was preceded in death by his wife Norma Marchant and two brothers Jack and Bob Marchant.

He was retired from Virginia House Furniture and was the owner of Marchant Hardwood Floors. Mr. Marchant was a proud Marine. 

Survivors Include: his children: Ernest H. “Buddy” Marchant and wife Eve, Painted Post, N.Y., Ron Marchant and wife Kelly, Marion, Va., Mike Marchant and wife Sue, Marion, Va., Rick Marchant, Marion, Va., and Chris Marchant and wife Tonya, Marion, Va. Grandchildren: Trevor Marchant and wife Amy, Brandon Marchant and wife Brandi, Heather Marchant, Kelsey Marchant, Trae Marchant, Mariah Marchant, Ethan Marchant, Kamran Marchant. Great grandchildren: Madison Marchant, Gabe Marchant, Aiden Marchant; brother in law and childhood friend, Dean Sanders; special sister in law, Betty Marchant; sister in law, Dana Marchant. Several other sisters in law, nieces, nephews and loving family members also survive. 

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2013, at the Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Billy Frazier officiating. Interment will follow in Marchant Family Cemetery with full military honors being rendered.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Linda Louise Nugen, 62, of Shady Spring, died at home Wednesday, June 12, 2013, after a long illness.

Mary Belle Selvy Ellsmore Shumaker

FAYETTEVILLE — Mary Belle Selvey Ellsmore Shumaker, 86, of Fayetteville, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at Fayette Nursing and Rehab Center, Fayetteville, following an extended illness.

Annie Lee Thomas

Mrs. Annie Lee Thomas, 92, of Beckley, died Friday, June 7, 2013.

Born March 6, 1921, in Sun, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William and Aurelia Belle Bowles.

Mrs. Thomas was a homemaker, mother, and member of Church of God MPGT.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Thomas; daughter, Denise Ross; two sisters and two brothers.

Those left to cherish her precious memories are her sons, George Dupoint Thomas of Atlanta, Ga., Clinton (Jacqueline) Thomas of New Castle, Del.; daughters, Betty Thomas of Jamaica, N.Y., Brenda Underwood and Jacqueline Brooks, both of Beckley, Carol (Denard) Coles of Richmond, Va., Patricia Fussell of Brooklyn, N.Y., Debra Thomas and Pamela King, both of Beckley, an adopted son, Michael Thomas of Beckley; two sisters, Maggie L. Freeman of Ellicott, Md. and Dorothy Cobb of Canton, Ohio; 25 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren, and  a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be Saturday, 1 p.m., at Heart of God Ministries, 1703 S. Kanawha St. Beckley, with Pastor Ruby Berry officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Prosperity.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Douglas MacArthur ‘Mack’ Thomas Jr.

OAK HILL — Douglas MacArthur “Mack” Thomas Jr., age 48, of Oak Hill, died Monday, June 10, 2013, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill following an apparent heart attack.

Born March 29, 1965, at Oak Hill, he was the son of Douglas MacArthur and Ruth Martin Thomas of Minden, W.Va. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Toy and Kathern Martin and his paternal grandparents Earl and Virginia Thomas.

He was a salesman with Cole Truck Parts and was of the Protestant faith.

Survivors include his wife, Christy Evans Thomas; two sons, Matthew D. and Christopher M. Thomas, all of Oak Hill, and one brother, James Lee Thomas and wife Chrissy of Oak Hill.

Funeral services will be Friday, June 14, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill,  with Pastor Paul Basham officiating. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 11 a.m. til time of service.

Quincy Darrell Thompson

Quincy Darrell “Bubbles” Thompson, 82, of Coal City, formerly of Glade Springs and Ocala, Fla., passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2013.

In keeping with Darrell’s final wishes, he was cremated, 

Memorial services to celebrate the life of Darrell will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2013, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley. There will be no prior visitation.

Theresa M. Toney

Theresa M. Toney of Glen Daniel, died Saturday,  June 1, 2013 in Indiana, after a sudden heart attack.

She was born June 27, 1969, at Barton, Ohio, a daughter of the late Lillian Clay Toney and Clayton “Sonny” Toney  of Glen Daniel.

Theresa enjoyed singing in various churches on Big Coal River and was talented in playing the piano, clarinet, and trumpet.

In addition to her father, “Sonny” she is survived by three sisters, Frances, Paterina, and Melissa, all of Glen Daniel.  

A memorial service will be noon on Saturday, June 15, 2013, at the Arnett Chapel, Arnett, with the Revs. Larry Kinder and Timmy Vaughn officiating.

Theresa’s request was for her ashes to be returned home to West Virginia and remain at the family property.
