Wanda Humphrey Stover

MT. HOPE — Wanda Merle Humphrey Stover, 90, passed away Thursday, October 3, 2013, at the Bowers Hospice House after having several strokes.

Born July 16, 1923, in Pax, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Minnie Mae Evans Humphrey and her father, Jarrell Humphrey, who died before Wanda was born.

She was a 1941 graduate of Pax High School, where she enjoyed baseball, tennis, swimming and cheerleading. She fondly looked forward to attending all the Pax School Reunions.

At the age of 19, Wanda boarded a train with $15 in her pocket and went to Elkton, Md., where she worked in an ammunitions plant. She was proud to call herself a “Rosie the Riveter”. She met the man who was to become her husband at the Pax swimming hole. Bonnie Ray (Barney) Stover married Wanda on February 11, 1946 and they were inseparable until his passing in 1988.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Bruce Humphrey, Clarence “Froggy” Humphrey, Billie Humphrey, and sister, Geraldine Hurt Hamilton. She has one surviving brother, Lacy Hurt, from Pax.

Wanda took great pride in her flower gardens, her quilting, her children and their families and in her church, the Maynor Free Will Baptist Church. She loved to travel and especially loved to swim.

Surviving are her children, Kathy Vance and husband, Larry of Packs Branch, Lynn Carr and husband, Wes, of Cool Ridge, Douglas Stover of Sand Branch, and Vicki Kiser and husband, Randy, of Prince. She has eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Services will be Sunday, October 6 at 2 p.m. at the Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley with Pastor Larry Brown officiating. Following the services she will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home.

Grandsons and friends will serve as pallbearers.
