James C. Beard

James Christopher “J.B.” Beard, 89, rejoined his loved ones, daughter Jane Ann Beard, brother, Joe Woods Beard, and sister, Alice Lee Massie, on September 23, 2013.  

Born to John G. and Annie Beard on December 5, 1923, J.B. was a lifelong resident of Beckley.

J.B. graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1941 and went on to become the Administrator of Wyoming General Hospital from 1953-1983. He was a devoted husband and father, committed to his family, making sure that all knew of his love and support and he touched the lives of everyone he met with his generous spirit. He had many hobbies, but most enjoyed a good conversation. And with his quick-witted style and a way with words, his stories will forever be in our hearts and memories.

He is survived by Retha, his beloved wife of 40 years; son Patrick (Debra) Sheehan; daughter Kerry (Michael) Hall; brother John G. “Jack” Beard; granddaughter Mallory Mann; granddaughter Rylee Sheehan.

Services will be held at Melton Mortuary on Saturday, September 28, 2013, at 11 a.m.

Hazel Cook

PINEVILLE — Hazel Cook, 80, of Pineville, passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at Appalachian Regional Hospital surrounded by her family.

Born September 13, 1933, she was the daughter of the late James Quilly Stanley and Tessie Workman Stanley.

Mrs. Cook was a homemaker and was of the Protestant faith. She was a patient at the Wyoming Nursing and Rehab Center at New Richmond. She enjoyed fishing with her husband when she was in good health. Mrs. Cook is the last surviving member of her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Lucy, Mabel, Ethel and Ruth; brothers, Reese, Harry, Jack and James Kelly.

Survivors include her husband, Arlis Cook of Pineville; her sons, Calvin Willard and Nick Stanley both of Turkey Creek, Clyde Dewayne Patrick of Boones Mill, Va., Ray Gillespie of Mullensville; her daughter, Nancy Harman and her husband, Chuck, of Boones Mill, Va.; grandchildren, Medwin Willard, Chris and Cory Willard; a great-grandson, Jordan Willard.

A celebration of Hazel’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 28, 2013, in the Calfee Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Garland Cook Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at the Jackson Family Cemetery at New Richmond.

The family will receive friends from noon until the time of the service at 2 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Chris and Cory Willard, Kermit Toler, Chuck Harman, Craig Lucas and Nelson Cook.

Theodore A. ‘Ted’ Crook Jr.

Theodore A. “Ted” Crook Jr., 92, of Cool Ridge, passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at his home following an extended illness.

Born December 11, 1920, in Blue Jay, W.Va., to the late Theodore A. Crook Sr. and Zora Phillips Crook.

He attended Shady Spring High School until the 11th grade and then went on to Beckley College Vo-Tech where he was certified as a welder and electrician. He than later on taught welding at the school.

Mr. Crook was a member of UMWA and worked as a coal miner for over 24 years. He was a member of New Haven Baptist Church. One of his enjoyments in life was fishing and hunting. He was a devoted father and grandfather. He taught many of his grandsons the love of outdoor sports at an early age. It was always such a great thrill for him when his grandchildren visited. Not only did he enjoy outdoor sports, he also enjoyed gardening and cutting hay at his farm for himself and for others. He was also known for giving his children and grandchildren nicknames; this was his way of showing his love.

The love he had for his children will always be passed from generation to generation; also his Christian manners were taught to his children and to others that crossed his path of life. Within his 92 years of life he has said goodbye to many and he often spoke to others about being prepared to meet the Lord. Ted was also the last surviving member of his immediate family.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years prior to her passing, Mrs. Louise Ernestine Crook; son, Edward Lee Crook; and a grandson, Raymond Theodore Farley.

Those surviving include his children, Deanna Meador of Hico, Delores L. Pate (Dave) of Athens, La., Alice Matherly (Carlos) of Blue Jay Six and Tommy Ray Crook (Sarah) of Layland, W.Va.; 19 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; special friend, Margaret Ashworth; and also a host of nieces, nephews and many friends survive him.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, September 29, 2013, at the New Haven Baptist Church in Cool Ridge with Rev. Greg Lilly officiating. Interment will follow at the Crook Cemetery at Blue Jay Six.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons.

Evening visitation will be held at the Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family insists donations be made to the Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive in Beckley.

The family also wishes to extend a special thanks to the hospice nurses that gave Dad the care and love during his illness. They were not only his nurses, but they became his friends. Also, to Darlene Bennett who gave him love and care. She too was more than just a nurse; she was also a “dear” friend. And lastly, a special thank you to Rev. Greg Lilly, who was always a support with Dad and to the family. In his last days, Rev. Lilly quoted, “He made impressions on our hearts.” He will be sadly missed.

Willa Mae ‘Bill’ Wilson Franklin

OAK HILL — Willa Mae “Bill” Wilson Franklin, 91, of Oak Hill, formerly of Kincaid, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, at the Jones Avenue Church of God in Oak Hill with the Rev. Ralph Shupe and the Rev. Tonya Shupe officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, and one hour prior to the service Monday, Sept. 30, at the church.

Violet Pansy McLaughlin Garrett

COWEN — Violet Pansy McLaughlin Garrett, 91, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013.

Graveside service and burial will be 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at the West Virginia Memorial Gardens, Calvin, with Pastor Eddie Groves officiating.

Belinda ‘Pixie’ Garten

Belinda “Pixie” Garten, 63, of Beaver passed away at BARH, Wednesday, September 25, 2013, after an extended illness.

Belinda was affectionately known as Pixie most of her life. She was born July 10, 1950, to Cecil and Lucille Sizemore.

Pixie grew up in Rhodell and graduated from Stoco High School in Coal City class of 1968.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years Dennis Ralph Davis, who passed away December 9, 2000.

Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband who never left her side, Thomas Garten. Pixie and Tommy were married December 18, 2011; also surviving are her son Chip Booth and his wife Heather, her two beautiful granddaughters Sophie and Caroline Booth and her stepdaughter Lisa Keiling and her husband Brian and two beautiful stepgrandchildren Jessica and Will Keiling.

A celebration of Pixie’s life will be held in the Sanctuary at Oak Grove Church on Friday, September 27, beginning at 2 p.m. with a service at 4 p.m. where Kelly Gowan will preside.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research at www.stjude.org, an organization dear to Pixie’s heart.

Virginia ‘Ginny’ Turner Kaess

WAKE FOREST, N.C. — Virginia “Ginny” Lee Turner Kaess, 79, of Wake Forest, passed away Thursday morning, September 26, 2013, at the William M. Center for Caring.

She was born in Sophia, W.Va., to the late Fred Brewer and Ada Pine Godfrey Brewer.

Virginia was a hotel general manager/hotel sales for many years.

Virginia is survived by her husband, Harry Richard Kaess; children, Fred Turner and wife Kathy of Moyock, N.C., Chip Turner of Greensboro, N.C., John Turner and wife Leslie of Greensboro, N.C., Lesa Atkins and fiancé Kip Greer of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren, Fred and Emily Turner of Washington, D.C., Whitney and Jamie Hughes of Holly Springs, N.C., Lindsey Turner of Cary, N.C.; Matthew Turner of Greensboro, N.C., Casey Turner of Greensboro, N.C., Adam and Ian Atkins both of Raleigh, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Preston and Davis Hughes; cousin, Shirley Blackburn of Sophia, W.Va.; nephew, Davie Wilson of Locust, N.C.; niece, Betty Holt of Beckley, W.Va.

Gordon ‘Frank’ Murphy

COTTLE — Gordon Franklin “Frank” Murphy, 71, of Cottle, passed away Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Alderson Missionary Baptist Church in Craigsville, with Pastor Eddie Groves officiating. Burial will follow at Little Union Cemetery in Calvin. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the funeral service at the church.

MCCONNELL — Mary Lou Simmons Propst, 81, of McConnell, a native of Glen Rogers, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013.
