Mack Albert Lewis Basham

Mack Albert Lewis Basham, age 83, of Cool Ridge, West Virginia, passed away on Saturday, September 14, 2013, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Born on January 13, 1930, at Mt. View, WV, he was the son of the late Mack Basham and  Chloe Ransom Basham.

Mr. Basham was a retired coal miner, and a member of the UMWA. He was a member of the Glen Morgan Missionary Baptist Church at Glen Morgan, where he served as a trustee. In his spare time Mr. Basham enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. Mr. Basham also served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Delta Basham, by a brother, Paul Basham, by an infant son David John Basham, by a grandson, Jason Carr, and by stepdaughters Dr. Carol Imes, and Debra Golden.

Surviving wife of nearly 20 years Dollie Furrow Golden Basham, his children, Pauline Pierce and her husband Paul of Eufaula, Oklahoma, Mary Ellen Lilly of Cool Ridge, William Basham and his wife Bert of Beckley, Kenneth Basham of Cool Ridge, stepchildren Brenda Golden of Daniels, Terri Robert of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Willie J . Golden of Mineral Wells, Texas.

Brothers, George Basham and his wife Margot of Shady Spring, Harland Basham and his wife Patty of Beckley, Palma Basham and his wife Becky of North Carolina, Leroy Basham and his wife Ann of Cool Ridge, Sisters: Lola Farley and her husband Les of Cool Ridge, and Wanda Tolliver and her husband Roger of Cool Ridge, WV.

Many Grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Friday, September 20, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Junior Moye officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, WV. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. DETROIT, Mich. — Mr. Billy G. Bly of Detroit, formerly of Beckley, died Sunday, September, 15, 2013.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, September, 21, 2013 at Cantrell Funeral Home, 10400 Mack Ave., Detroit, MI, 48214, (313-821-9040).

Dexter ‘Deck’ Lee Chandler

Dexter “Deck” Lee Chandler, 75, of Beckley, passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 after a period of declining health.

Deck was born August 29, 1938 to Sarah Josephine Chandler of Beckley and the late Letcher G. Chandler.

He was of the Protestant faith. Deck attended Teel School and Woodrow Wilson High School. During his lifetime he resided in West Virginia, New York and California where he worked in the restaurant trade until retirement.

Besides his father he was preceded in death by two brothers, Benjamin Gale Chandler and Raymond Keith Chandler.

Besides his loving mother he is survived by two aunts, Daisy Bennett of North Carolina  and Blanche Wood of Beckley; one sister in law, Mary Chandler of Maryland and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, September 20, 2013 at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Rev. F. D. Sexton officiating. Burial will follow in the Atkins Family Cemetery at Sandstone. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral parlors.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Thias Cohen Crookshanks, infant son of Tristan Cohen and Chancley Lateisha Lowery Crookshanks, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2013.

Thias was born September 14, 2013.

He was preceded in death by great-grandparents, Arnold Day, Donald Owens, Stella Mae and Floyd Lowery, Nancy Miller and Gene Crookshanks.

Anna Dickens, 88, of Fairdale, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at Sunbridge Pine Lodge Care Center.

Ada Greene Dillon

WAYSIDE — Ada Greene Dillon, 102 of Wayside, passed away Tuesday evening, September 17, 2013 at her home following an extended illness. 

She was born at Wayside, Sept. 25 1910 a daughter of the late Russell Ashby and Ettie Mae Thomas Greene.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Mark H. Dillon.

Mrs. Dillon was a homemaker, a member of the Flint Chapel Baptist Church at Creamery and a member of the American Baptist Women. 

Surviving are, a son, Howard Mark Dillon of Lynchburg, Va.; two daughters, Wanda L. Belcher and her husband, Jim of Summersville, Rita M. Barker of Wayside; a very special friend Marrianne Blakeslee and her husband, Jon. Grandchildren, Becky Case, Debby Jackson, Mark Dillon, Terri Waters and husband, Mike, Ann Warner and husband Jerry; great-grandchildren, Matthew Case, Angie Johnson and husband, Dave, Amanda Workman and husband, Eric, Spencer Waters, Mary and Jack; great-great-grandchildren, T. Sarah E. Adkins Gill

HINTON — Sarah E. Adkins Gill, 76, of Tug Creek Road, Hinton, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at 4 p.m.

II Timothy Chapter 4 Verses 6-8. For I am now ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Hence forth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness. Which the Lord the righteous judge shall give me at that day, and not to me only but unto all them also that love his appearing.

Sarah was a loving Christian mother, grandmother and great grandmother and was a loving friend to all her family and many friends. She loved to go to church and listen to gospel radio and television programs, especially the “Love of Jesus” ministry with Dianna Pittman and Johnnie.

Born February 18, 1937 at Sandstone, she was the daughter of the late Albert E. and Elvie Myrtle Martin Adkins.

Other than her parents Sarah was preceded in death by her first husband, Virgil B. Adkins who was killed in the Korean War; her first son, Virgil Lewis Adkins and one brother, Johnny A. Adkins.

She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Daniel C. Gill; three sons, Columbus Ray and wife Connie, Raymond Douglas and wife Lillie Mae and John W. (Timmy); two daughters, Carolyn Bishop and husband Henry and Christine Gill, all of Tug Creek; four granddaughters, Susie Meadows Farmer and husband James of Hinton, Shelia Richmond and husband Eddie of Hinton, Donna Ann Gill of Tug Creek and Sherry Bishop and husband Ben of Elk Knob; one grandson, John Stevenson and wife Sonya of Tug Creek; great grandchildren, Rogie Massey, Samantha Cain, Kaylee Farmer, Sally Ann Fox, Gracie and Dean Richmond, Stacy, Daniel “Bubbie” and Baby Sarah Bishop and Dominic Stevenson; one brother, Carlos H. Adkins and companion Rose Massey; two sisters, Ethel Ward of Chestnut Mt. and Charlotte Yonney and husband Danny of Scarbro.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastors Harold Taylor and Eddie Crews officiating. Burial will follow in the Gill Family Cemetery at Tug Creek.

LOGAN — Corda Evans Hale, 96, of Logan, passed away Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013.

OAK HILL — Gail Virginia Leffel Samuels, 80, of Oak Hill, died on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born September 21, 1932 at Pax, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Junior H. “Dutch” and Mary Sweeney Leffel.

She was a homemaker and a Protestant.  

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Lee Samuels; sister, Lola Madge and brothers, Harold Leffel Jr. and Larry Leffel.

Survivors include sisters, Dorothy Samuels of Hampton, Va. and Sharon Massey of Oak Hill; brother, Billy Leffel and wife, Linda of Oak Hill; sisters-in-law, Linda Leffel and Yvonne Leffel, both of Oak Hill and dear friend, Jim Riser.

Graveside rites and committal service will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 20, 2013 at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity, with Bob Creed officiating. Burial will follow. There will be no visitation.

Jean Delores Vanover Sharp

OAK HILL — Jean Delores Vanover Sharp, 79, of Oak Hill, died on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, W.Va.

Born May 24, 1934 at Kingston, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Russell M. Vanover and Pearl M. Potter Vanover Tercheck.

She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Ray Sharp; daughter, Gail S. Sharp; son, Gary A. Sharp Sr.; daughter-in-law, Teresa Y. Sharp and grandson-in-law, Matt Jones.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Darrell R. Sharp of Minden, Bill R. Sharp of Oak Hill, Michael E. Sharp and wife, Sue of Oak Hill, Annetta L. Sharp of Oak Hill, Pearl R. Sharp-Baxter and fiancé Randy L. Elizabeth Hill Walker

Elizabeth Hill Walker, 98, died at Greystone Manor, Beaver, on Sunday, Sept. 15th, 2013. 

Mrs. Walker was born Elizabeth Palmer Hill on January 8th, 1915 in Richmond, Va., the eldest of three children of William Palmer Hill and Katharine McClanahan Ingles.

Liz was a graduate of Collegiate School and Hollins College.

In 1938, she married Alfred Jones Walker who was employed as a mining engineer at Slab Fork Coal Company and subsequently as General Manager there.

They had five children: Katharine Ingles (1940), William Buchanan (1942), Alfred Jones Jr., (1944), George Palmer (1946) and Palmer Hill (1949). 

William and George died in infancy and Palmer died in 2009.

Liz is survived by her children, Kitty and Al, her grandchildren, John Baxter James Jr., Donaldson Earwood James, Mary Ingles Walker Sievers, Alfred Jones Walker III and Katherine Caskie Walker. Liz also has 10 great grandchildren.

An active member of the Beckley Presbyterian Church, she taught Sunday School, served as President of the Women of the Church and was the first woman to be elected as an Elder at Beckley Presbyterian. 

Liz loved flowers and gardening and was a member of the Highland Garden Clubs here in Beckley. She belonged to the Black Knight Country Club. Always active socially, Liz had a circle of close friends and wide acquaintance in the community. In her later years, she enjoyed the companionship of John Welles, also late of Beckley. 

The Funeral will be held on Friday, Sept. 20th at noon at the Beckley Presbyterian Church, 203 S. Kanawha St., Beckley. Rev. John McKinnon will be officiating. The family will greet friends during the hour before the service. There will be refreshments after the service in the Friendship Hall of the Church. The burial will be private.
