Masie Erma Arlene Chalk

RUPERT — Masie Erma Arlene Chalk, 95, of Rupert, passed away Saturday, December 31, 2011, in the Heartland of Rainelle Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness.

Born October 9, 1916, at Crag, she was the daughter of the late Jacob A. and Mary S. Eagle Carr. Masie worked in sales and was of the Pentecostal faith.

Survivors include her husband Kenneth Chalk; 1 sister Kathleen Shelton of Rupert; 2 grandchildren Michael Alley, Sr., and Debbie Roagle; and 4 great-grandchildren Michael Alley, Jr., Joel, Stacy, and John Roagle.

A service will be held today, Tuesday, January 3, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Smathers Funeral Chapel with Pastor Frank Jones officiating.

Shannon Michael Chapman, 28, of Beckley, passed away Sunday, Jan. 1, 2011.

Ethel Bowles Clemons, 93, of Helen, passed away Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011.

Bernard Thomas Deaner

SALEM, Va. — Bernard Thomas Deaner, 79, of Salem, VA, passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2011.

He was born in Tams, WV, a son of the late Charlie A. and Dorothy Barlow Deaner, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having faithfully served during the Korean War.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 18 years, Anne Miller Deaner; a brother, Charles McCay Deaner; and his stepmother, Frances Griffitts Deaner.

His surviving family includes a son, Josh Lester and his wife, Michele; daughter, Patti Barnard and her husband, Frank; brother, Douglas M. Deaner; sisters-in-law, Sally Wood Deaner and Linda Stiltner Deaner; two grandsons, Andrew Lester and his wife, Sydney, and Jeremy Lester; granddaughter, Hannah Lester; nieces, Janet L. Deaner, Dawn “Missy” Eberl, and Debbie Norton; nephew, Scott Deaner; great-nieces, Holly Norton and Jadyn Deaner; great-nephews, Ricky L. Norton, Jakeb Deaner, and Case Deaner; special cousin, Shelby Deaner, Jr., and his wife, Carol; as well as many other cousins and friends. Bernard will be missed by his family and all who knew him, for he was a very special person to all. The family would like to thank Carrie Chittum and Elva Miller for their unending friendship to Bernie.

A graveside memorial service with military honors will be held on Friday, January 6, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens in Roanoke. There will be no visitation.

Eugene H. Ferrell

ORGAS — Eugene H. Ferrell, 69, of Orgas, WV, went home to be with Jesus on Saturday, December 31, 2011, at 6:15 a.m. with his family surrounding his bed at home.

He was born August 10, 1942, at Orgas, WV, a son of the late Dewey and Minnie Wriston Ferrell.

He retired from The Department of Highways with 25 years of service.

Eugene loved God with all his heart and worked in ministry with his wife and family for 49 years. He was a member of the Keith Full Gospel Church. He had great love for his wife, children, grandchildren, church family and other relatives and friends. He was a gentle giant of faith and great prayer warrior. He enjoyed the outdoors, the beauty of the mountains and rivers, flowers, and enjoyed vacationing with his family.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 5 unborn grandchildren; brothers: Farris and Kermit Ferrell, nieces: Joyce Ann Ferrell and Becky Cooke and a nephew, David Lee Ferrell.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Dorothy June Cottrell-Ferrell, daughters: Tammy Sebok and husband, Jeff, from Fostersville, WV; Lorie Kile and husband, Dwight, from Whitesville, WV; Melissa Blankenship and husband Gary from St. Albans, WV; son, Gene Ferrell from Nellis, WV; sister: Joyce Swanigan from Scott Depot, WV; brother: Harry Ferrell and wife, Kathleen, from Buckhannon, WV; grandchildren: Chelsea Sebok-Chapman and husband Stephen from Orgas, WV, Caitlyn Kile from Whitesville, Candace Kile from Whitesville, WV, Dwight David Kile II from Whitesville, WV, Amelia Sebok from Fostersville, WV, Melissa M. Blankenship-McLain and husband, Gary, from Guyton, GA, and a host of extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon, January 4, 2012, at 11 o’clock at the Keith Full Gospel Church, Keith, WV, with the Rev. Randy Hill and the Rev. Mark Thomas. Interment will be in Pineview Cemetery, Orgas, WV.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, from 6 to 10 at the church.

Pauline ‘Polly’ Marshall

FAYETTEVILLE — Pauline “Polly” Marshall, 87, of Fayetteville passed away Sunday, January 1, 2012, at Fayette Nursing and Rehab, Fayetteville.

Born on April 17, 1924, at Yolyn, WV, she was the daughter of the late Ted and Stella Collin Gannon.

Polly was a member of Fayetteville United Methodist Church where she had been very active. She loved gardening.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Woodrow Marshall, on February 26, 2003; and one brother, Arthur.

Left to cherish her memory include her son, Billy Marshall of Yarmouth, Maine; daughter, Marilyn K. “MeMe” Marshall of Fayetteville; four sisters, Marie Cook of Columbia, MD, Kathleen Motes of Myrtle Beach, SC, Virginia Porter of Portsmouth, OH, and Gail Younce of Fayetteville; and brother, Jack Gannon of Oak Hill.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2012, at the Fayetteville United Methodist Church, with Rev. Clare Sulgit-Horn officiating. Burial will follow at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral at the church.

Howard James McClung

Howard James McClung, age 41, of Beckley, WV, passed away on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2012, after a 5-month struggle to recover from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Born on October 7, 1970, in Beckley, Howard was the son of the late Robert McClung Sr. and Shelby Bragg McClung Jeffries.

Howard is survived by his wife of 23 years Diane Howlett McClung, son Eric McClung and companion Nora Davis and grandson Ayden McClung of Beckley, WV. Five brothers: Robert McClung of Beckley, Thomas McClung and his wife Tonya of Raleigh, North Carolina, Jerry McClung of Beckley, Roger McClung and his wife Trish, of Nashville, Tennessee, and Ronald McClung of Beckley. Stepmother Wanda McClung of Beckley, stepsisters Crystal  Shrewsbury, and her husband Wayne, of Beckley, Anna McVey, of Beckley, and Angie McVey also of Beckley. A stepbrother James McVey and his wife Lisa of Beckley. Several nieces and nephews and a host of friends are also among his survivors.

Howard was a coal miner who loved to hunt, fish and ride his motorcycle. He was the life of the party and lived each day to the fullest. Howard had a heart of gold and loved his family like no other.

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life of Howard James McClung on Wednesday, January 4, 2012,  at 1 p.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with his brother Roger McClung offering a Eulogy. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Mary Z. Simms  Lively McMillen

RAINELLE — Mary Z. Simms Lively McMillen, 92, of Rainelle, West Virginia, passed away on Sunday, January 1, 2012, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Ronceverte, following a long illness.

Born December 9, 1919, on Simms Mountain, she was the third child born to the late W.D. and Octavia C. Woolridge Simms. She was the last member of her immediate family.

Mary and her husband Hub owned several great restaurants in the local area. She was a member of Sewell Valley Baptist Church of Rainelle.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband and the father of her six children, W.A. “Hub” Lively; her second husband, Ted McMillen; brother, Pastor Harry J. Simms; sister, Zola Jane Ingram Milam; grandson, Jeff Lively; great-grandson, Michael Heaster; and great-granddaughter, Emily Warden.

Those left to cherish her memory are: 3 daughters: Pat Vaughan and husband Marvin of Simms Mtn. Road, Polly Clevenger and husband Darrell of Dawson, WV, Delores Fleshman and husband Jack of Dawson, WV; 3 sons: Jack Lively and wife Barbara of Rainelle, WV, Jim Lively and wife Millie of Grassy Meadows, WV, Jerry Lively and wife Karen of Rainelle, WV; 2 stepsons: Dale McMillen and wife Sally of Lockbridge, WV, and Dr. Jay McMillen of Meadow Bridge, WV; 20 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren; host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services and committal rites will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with Pastor Mike Whisman officiating, assisted by Pastor David Bennett. Entombment will follow at Wallace Memorial Mausoleum, Clintonville. Friends and family may call from 12 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

ALDERSON — Reginia Mae Edens-Parks, 44, of Alderson, passed away Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012.

Lewis A. Waddell

Lewis A. Waddell of 206 S. French St., passed away on January 1st, 2012. He was surrounded by family when he passed away at home.

Lewis was born in Coal City, W.Va., July 3, 1928. He was the son of the Rev. Dewey G. and Hallie Cooper Waddell.

Lewis spent 50+ years in the mines primarily working for Lillybrook Coal Co., Slab Fork Coal Co. and finishing his career at Maben Energies. He was an avid hunter, enjoyed fishing and loved riding his Harley Davidson. Lewis was a man that loved his family and at his sickest hours, he was always more concerned about them than his own well-being. He will be loved and missed by all.

In addition to his parents, Lewis was preceded in death by brothers Dewey Oris, Charles, Quincy and infant Clyde Otis and sisters Gertrude Rochea’, Athlene Thornley, Geals Lilly and Delila Lafon. Also foster brother and sister James (Jay) Bowling and Faye Bowling Craighead and granddaughter Laura Waddell.

Lewis is survived by his wife of 62 years Clarabell Waddell, brother Moody Waddell and wife Pat of Beckley, sisters Mary Harvey and husband Earnest (Buddy) of Coal City, Eunice Waddell of Beckley and sister-in-law Wanita Waddell of St. Albans. Sons Mark Lewis Waddell and wife Debbie, David Conrad Waddell and Mary and daughter Robin Alice Whitt and husband Warren. Four grandchildren, Jennifer (Waddell) Madar and husband Ryan, Amanda (Waddell) Lysak and husband Jeff, Rebecca (Waddell) Dingis and husband Larry, and Leslie Whitt. Great-grandchildren Zach Lewis Madar, Reese Marie Madar and Sawyer Thomas Lysak.

Pastor Dennis Burks will preside over the services Thursday, January 5th, at 1 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the mortuary and one hour prior to the services on Thursday.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Lysak, Larry Dingis, Brian Rahall, Brian Hopkins, Michael Waddell.
