Gary Jason Adkins

SANDSTONE — Gary Jason Adkins, 60, of Sandstone, passed away Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 3, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Dave Simon officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit with the family from noon until time of service Monday.

Velma Jean Adolphi, 76, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014.

Carol Ann Bower

Carol Ann Bower, 75, of Coal City, passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2014, after a courageous battle with lung cancer in the arms of her loving family.

Born on July 14, 1938, in Lillybrook, she was the daughter of the late William Mays and Virgie Pearl Basham Mays.

Carol was a retired teacher’s aide of 29 years for the Raleigh Co. Board of Education, and a member of Princewick Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, Carol is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Von Bower; sister, Hilda Wilson; brothers-in-law, Emmette Wilson and Eugene Grim.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Tamela Ann Sprouse (Chuck) of Princewick, W.Va., and son, Von Edward Bower at home; four grandchildren, Angela Hudnall (Michael) of Princewick, W.Va., Charlie Sprouse (Ashton) of Coal City, W.Va., Gregory Sprouse (Jessica) of Madison, N.C., Tosha Rice (Kevin) of Fredricksburg, Va.; eight great-grandchildren, Logan Patrick, Kayla Michelle, Casey Ruth, Zachary Charles, Elizabeth Gail, Edward Harrison, Jeremiah Lee and Benjamin James; sisters, Aline Ellis (Jim) of Dunnellon, Fla., Shirley Grim of Hudson, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Thomas (Jack) of Coal City, Bobbie Helvey (Vernon) of Covington, Va., and Nora Faye Keen (Eddie) of Christiansburg, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews and beloved friends.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Williams Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia, with Pastor Shane Roark officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

The family would also like to thank the Hospice Staff of Beckley, and the staff at the Carl Larson Cancer Center, Beckley.

Donald Earl Breitkreutz Sr.

ST. ALBANS — Donald Earl Breitkreutz Sr. of St. Albans passed away on February 26, 2014, at the home of his daughter, Kim Caudill, at the age of 76.

He was born in Lebanon, S.D., on March 6, 1937, to Ewald Melvin and Esther Ruth (Merrill) Breitkreutz.

He graduated from High School from Gettysburg, S.D., and was a pitcher on the South Dakota State Championship Baseball Team his senior year. Donald had a lifelong career in the food service industry. Starting his career as a candy maker, then working for McDonald’s holding many executive positions, one of which was the Dean of Hamburger University. He went on to be the VP of the International Division for A&W Restaurants, at Burger King he helped to build and develop Burger King University, then he was the VP for the Western Division of Pizza Hut. He later opened his own restaurants and owned a convenience store. After retirement, for several years, he worked for Boydstons Funeral Home in Lindsay, Okla., and also served as Mayor and Council Person in Maysville, Okla. In his leisure time Donald enjoyed going to auctions, playing cards, watching NASCAR, fishing and golf.

He will be remembered and loved by his survivors; his brothers, Marvin Breitkreutz of St. Joseph, Mo., and Melvin Breitkreutz of Spearfish, S.D., daughter, Laura James and husband Clifford of Maysville, Okla., daughter Melody Breitkreutz of Omaha, Neb., daughter, Kim Caudill and her husband Ralph of Victor, W.Va.; son, SMSgt Donald Breitkreutz Jr. and his wife Jennifer of Wichita, Kan., son, Brian Breitkreutz and his wife Jodie of Charleston, W.Va.; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Donald was preceded in death by his wife Patricia Breitkreutz; his sisters, Dellene Jennie, Joyce Elaine, Baby Girl; and Granddaughter, Brandy Sue.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted with Pastor Danny Legg officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens in Victor.

Donald Davidson

Donald Davidson, 83, of Shady Spring, passed away Friday, Feb. 28, 2014.

John M. Doss

On Wednesday, February 26, 2014, John M. Doss, age 67, of Beckley, formerly of Bolt, passed away at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, after a long illness, to enter into Heaven to be with Jesus and to be reunited with his mom, dad, and others.

Mr. Doss was born at Masseyville, on April 6, 1946, to the late Virginia Strawser Doss and Paul Doss.

He was a former coal miner and police officer. Mr. Doss was affiliated with the Bolt Church of God.

Survivors include his sister, Jenny Smith and her husband Buddy of Masseyville, a brother David Doss and his wife Melissa of Seguin, Texas.

He will be missed  by aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and by a special friend Mark and many other friends.

The family extends special thanks to the staff of Heartland of Beckley who cared for him for two years, Raleigh General Hospital, Charleston Area Medical Center General Division, and the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of John M. Doss on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at 8 p.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with Rev. Randall and Carol Pugh, along with Rev. Jarrod Pugh officiating. Graveside rites and burial will follow at 10 a.m. Sunday morning at the Miller Cemetery at Rock Creek.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

PINEVILLE — Euell Sherman Hanshaw, 82, of Pineville passed away Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014.

A celebration of Euell’s life will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 3, in the Calfee Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Raven Kennedy and Pastor Michael Knotts officiating. Ronald E. King, 57, passed away Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014.

We lost our beloved Chris on Thursday, February 27, 2014, after a long struggle with heart disease.

Born March 23, 1970, in Washington, DC, he is the son of Bruce McNeill and Donna Bailey Bierman.

Chris developed a love of deer hunting at an early age by going with his father, Bruce. He was most at peace hunting and fishing in the mountains of West Virginia. Chris would say his greatest achievement in life is his lovely daughter, Amber. Chris was employed as a welder by Pennington Plumbing and Heating.

Chris is preceded in death by grandparents, Rev. Claude and Maxine Bailey, and Virgil and Valentine McNeill.

In addition to his parents, Bruce and Donna, those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Pennie McNeill of Sophia; daughter, Amber Christine McNeill of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; stepson, Mark Hatcher; stepgranddaughters, Alyssa Hatcher and Hailey Hatcher; sister, Cynthia Langel and husband Paul of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; brother, Dr. Brian McNeill and fiancée, Denice Georgi of Atlanta, Ga.; nephew, Andrew Langel; niece, Ashley Langel.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor George Mandakunis officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Maxine Richmond

TRUE — Maxine Richmond, 81, of True, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, February 27, 2014, at her home following a long illness.

Born November 25, 1932, at Hinton, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Ollie Buckland Goff.

Maxine was a member of Cooks Chapel Baptist Church. She was a 1953 Hinton High School graduate and had obtained her certified nursing assistant degree and cared for the elderly until she retired in 1998. Maxine was an artist who enjoyed crafts and painting. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Preceding her in death include her husband, Willard Richmond; infant son, Noah Benjamin Richmond; infant grandson, James Landry Anderson; grandson, Tyler Richmond; three sisters, Evelyn Reed, Hazel Lilly and an infant sister, Nina Mae Goff.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Anita Phillips and husband Bill of Pipestem, Nora Richmond of Bellepoint, Dale Ann Richmond of Bellbrook, Ohio, and Perry Richmond and wife Karmin of Princeton; eight grandchildren, Corey Yancey and wife Desiree of Harrisonburg, Va., Erich Gill and wife Victoria of Hinton, Hilary Phillips of Pipestem, Nick Cooper and wife Wendy of St. Albans, Andrew Phillips and Chris Romero of Phoenix, Ariz., Bethany Olckers and husband Jan of South Africa, Jenna Gilmore of Princeton and Windy Phillips of Dublin, Va.; six great-grandchildren, Ryan and Jordan Yancey, Grey and Gabe Gaddis, Seth Gill and Haydn Olckers; two sisters, Wanda Lively and Reva King; and special friends, Ed and Lou Workman of True.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Dallas Peyton and Eddie Crews officiating. Burial will follow in the Elk Knob Cemetery.

Arby Archie Smith

OAK HILL — Arby Archie Smith, 68, of Oak Hill, died on Thursday, February 27, 2014, at his home.

Born August 1, 1945, at Harvey, W.Va., he was the son of the late Rev. Arb Smith and Elizabeth Pearl Darby Smith.

He was a disabled laborer for Cabot Gas Company.

His wife, Barbara Marie (Smith) Smith, two brothers, a sister and a grandson preceded him in death.

Survivors include two sons, Arby Smith Jr. and wife, Angie Marie Turney, and Jonathan Smith and wife, Charlotte, all of Oak Hill, and a sister, Helen Smith of Oak Hill.

He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Jasmine Hope Turney, Vanessa Dawn Hamrick, Barbara Frances Smith, Edic Hodge Jr., Joseph Smith, Jessie Ray Smith, James Turney and Sharon Turney.

Mr. Smith was cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Iris G. Wheeler

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — Iris G. Wheeler, 54, formerly of Fayetteville, West Virginia, passed away Saturday, February 22, 2014, at home with her husband, Tom, and brother and sister-in-law, Erhard and Imtrud Eitel, in Kaiserslautern, Germany.

Born on October 18, 1959, in Wetzlar, Germany, and was the daughter of the late Helmut and Maria Elfriede Eitel of Wetzlar, Germany.

She married her husband, Thomas C. Wheeler of Lochgelly, West Virginia, on October 13, 1982, in Rechtenbach, Germany. Iris worked as a civilian employee for the U.S. Army from 1978 until she medically retired in 2012. Her hobbies included genealogy, cross stitching and working.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Tammie L. Brown of Fayetteville, West Virginia, and Sandra (Sandy) Bias of Oak Hill, West Virginia.

Left to cherish her precious memories are four brothers: Erhard (Imtrud) Eitel of Germany, Steve (Linda) Wheeler of Fayetteville, David (Paula) Wheeler of Fayetteville, Jonathan (Brandy) Wheeler of Lochgelly, one sister, Rita Mueller of Germany; brother-in-law, Billy Brown of Fayetteville; nieces and nephews, Laura (Joe) Wiley, Marcus (Sandra) Mueller, Heather (Robb) Massie, Thomas (Nadine) Eitel, Jason (Katherine) Bias, Amber Pittman, Brooke Foster, Hannah (Brandon) Stone, Morgan Wheeler, Austin Brown, Brent Wheeler, Sarah Mueller, Ciera Wheeler, Sierra Toney, Bryson Wheeler, Aidan Foster, Nathan Wiley, Hunter Pittman, Logan Pittman, McKenna Wiley, Fynn Eitel, Cameron Foster, and Laura Eitel.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with Pastor Eddie Persinger officiating. Interment will follow at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, West Virginia.

Arlene Farmer Chambers White

Arlene Farmer Chambers White was born January 1, 1932, at Bolt, West Virginia, and died February 26, 2014. She was the daughter of the late Anthony A. and Icie Tabor Farmer. On November 2, 2000, she was diagnosed with Evan’s Syndrome.

She was a member of the Breckenridge Missionary Baptist Church at Bolt since 1949, where she served as correspondence secretary.

A graduate of Trap Hill High School, class of 1949, she attended Concord College where she received a degree in education. She also held a Master’s Degree in Business Education from Marshall University. Arlene taught at Marsh Fork High and Man Junior High. After resigning from teaching, she became the Postmaster at Bolt, WV, until she retired in 1997. She was a member of the National Association of Postmasters, National League of Postmasters, Raleigh County League of Democratic Women and The Degree of Honor.

She was preceded in death by first husband, James Randall Chambers, in 1984 and second husband, Walter “Sam” White, in 2003, and a brother, A. Alvin Farmer, in 2013. Survivors include: daughters, Mrs. J.R. (Robert) Dorton, of Holly Hills; Mrs. Rochelle (Alan) Barnette, of Sophia; Mrs. Raylene (Gilles) Caron of Bolt; six grandchildren: Mrs. Jennifer (Phil) Buchanan; Mrs. Jessica (Mark) Workman, Mrs. Jillian (Tyler) Davis; Joshua Caron, all of Bolt, and Joshua’s fiancée, Katie Muovich, of Lester, Aaron (Adrianna) Barnette; Adam Barnette and fiancée Liz Heatley, all of Tampa, FL. Great-grandchildren: Justine Buchanan, Kylee Davis, Jaxson Workman, Khyler Davis, Abigail Barnette, and baby girl Davis and Alec Barnette, both due in May. A brother, Charles C. (Pat) Farmer of Phoenix, AZ; two sisters: A. Agnes Smith and Annette (Wallace) Carter of Newark, DE.

Sam’s children: Mrs. Debbie (Larry) Keaton of Marshall, VA; Mrs. Karen (Jim) Keaton of Centreville, VA; and Scott White of Coal City; grandchildren, Shane, Michael, Michelle, Krystal, Justin; and great-grandchildren, Savanna, Noah, Cheyenne, Holly, Garrett and Gabriella.

Funeral services will be conducted at Breckenridge Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday, March 2, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Dewey Lowe officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, at the church.

Friends will serve as pallbearers.
