Virginia Mann Bostic

GREENVILLE — Virginia Mann Bostic, 93, of Greenville, WV, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2014, following a short illness.

She was born at Assurance, WV, January 14, 1921, a daughter of the late Fred Douglas and Mary Catherine Riner Mann.

Mrs. Bostic was a homemaker, a retired employee of B.F. Goodrich Plant at Union, and a former employee of the Celanese Plant at Narrows, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold E. “Doc” Bostic, on August 17, 2013, a brother, Joseph E. Mann, and 2 sisters, Mildred Vance and Leola Wimmer.

She was a member of the Rock Camp United Methodist Church where she had served as a Sunday School Teacher, member of the Choir, former youth leader and a Lay Speaker for over 30 years, past officer of the Greenbrier District and the West Virginia State Conference of the United Methodist Church, a member of the Indian Creek Community Club, Monroe County Quilting Guild, Rock Camp United Methodist Women, Monroe County Republican Executive Committee, treasurer for the Monroe County Republican Club, Monroe County Senior Choir, past president of the Monroe County AARP, member of the West Virginia Cattlewomen’s Association, member of the Board of Directors of the Autumn Harvest Festival, worked as a volunteer at Springfield Nursing Home and a 1939 graduate of Peterstown High School.

Surviving are: 5 children, Mary Ann Smith and husband, Charlie, of Baton Rouge, LA, Sue Burns and husband, Craig, of Mt. Clare, Bobby Bostic and wife, Leressa, of Union, Jim Bostic of Buckhannon, Dwight L. Bostic and wife, Sue, of Austin, TX, 7 grandchildren: Suzanne Wilson and husband, Lenny, Michael Burns and wife, Becky, Adam and Katherine Smith, Jessica Yates and husband, Cory, Sarah and Emily Bostic; 3 great grandchildren, Brooklyn and Blake Wilson, Jackson Burns, 2 sisters, Jewel Good of Rich Creek, Va., and Eurcell Broyles of Sarton.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 25, 2014, at the Groves Funeral Home Chapel in Union with Rev. Eugene Fullen officiating. Burial will follow in the Ellison Cemetery at Dropping Lick.

Friends may call at the Groves Funeral Home in Union from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, February 24, 2014.

The family requests that Memorial Donations be made to the Rock Camp United Methodist Church Building Fund or to the Ellison Cemetery Association at 20 Honey Locust Road, Union, WV 24983.

Groves Funeral Home in Union is in charge of arrangements.



Betty B. Caldwell

MULLENS — Betty Branham Caldwell, 79, of Mullens, passed away Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014.

Services will be noon Thursday, Feb. 27, at Mullens United Methodist Church, Mullens. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service Thursday at the church.

Edna Mae Cooper

Edna Mae Cooper, age 89, of Beckley, WV, passed away at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley on Saturday, February 22, 2014.

Born on April 10, 1924, at Slab Fork,  she was the daughter of the late William T. Green and Ennis Lewis Green.

Mrs. Cooper was a homemaker, and a member of the Beckley Regular Baptist Church, where she had served as the church secretary and secretary for the AWANA program.

She enjoyed reading her Bible, and doing her devotions. Past hobbies included quilting and sewing.

Mrs. Cooper was preceded in death by her husband, Fred  L. Cooper, in 1997, by brothers, William C., Paul, and Jerry Green.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her children, Fred R. Cooper of Beckley, and  Kenneth L. Cooper and his wife Gwen of Beckley.

Two grandchildren, Brad Cooper of Beckley, Kenny Cooper and his fiancée Amanda Liller of Beckley.

Two stepgrandsons, Douglas and Dwayne Arthur.

Two stepgreat-grandchildren, Krista Meadows and her husband Traves, and Dakota Arthur.

A brother, Herbert Green of Taylor, Michigan, three sisters, Mary Messersmith and her husband Robert of Martinsburg, WV, Wanda West and her husband Bernard of Greenwood, Delaware, and Brenda Wyant and her husband Richard of Hagerstown, Maryland.

Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 26, 2014, with Pastor Steven Beverly, of the Beckley Regular Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be men of the Beckley Regular Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Davidson and G. Michael Walkup.

Ida Mae Canterbury Dodd

OAK HILL — Ida Mae Canterbury Dodd, age 88, of Oak Hill, passed away on Friday, February 21, 2014, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born December 31, 1925, in Monroe County, WV, she was the daughter of the late Maxie and Cammie Wilson Canterbury.

Ida was a homemaker, attended the Gospel Tabernacle and was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority (Laureate Beta Chapter).

Ida was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph E. Dodd, by three grandchildren, Michael Dodd, Steven Edward Corder and Pamela Gay Corder, and by two sisters, Wanda Kurzyna and Hilda West.

Surviving are her children, Gloria Wallace of Murrieta, CA, Sue Corder and husband Meade of Oak Hill, Polly Reynolds and husband Lewis of Fayetteville and Reggie Dodd and wife Terri of Oak Hill; 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her three sisters, Mary Hisel of CA, Iona Neely of NC and Naoma Gwinn of Oak Hill.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 25, 2014, at the Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Pastor Mike Kees officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, February 25, 2014, from 12:30 to 2 p.m.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Naomi Hajash

On Saturday, Feb. 22nd, 2014, Naomi June Parrish Hajash, age 83, died at her home in Beckley.

Born April 13th, 1930, at Tolleytown, Naomi was the daughter of the late George Joel and Nettie Pearl Hutchinson Parrish.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Athnel Hendricks and Edith McGhee, brothers, Clarence and Clyde Parrish.

Survivors include her two daughters, Carmen Jean File of Beckley and Connie Jo Hajash of Lexington, Ky.; grandson, William Henry File IV of Beckley; sister, Kathleen Lively of Beckley, and brother, Edward Parrish of Florida; a nephew, Gene Parrish of Baltimore, MD, who was like a brother to her, and many other nieces and nephews.

Naomi was a member of the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. She graduated from Trap Hill School and retired from Sears.

The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Tuesday, Feb. 25th, at 1 p.m. at the St. Francis de Sales Church. Fr. Pen will be the celebrant. The Rite of Committal will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the Funeral Mass at the church.

LEWISBURG — Ralph Lee Harbert Jr., 60, of Lewisburg, passed away Friday, Feb. 21, 2014.

A funeral service will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg, with Mr. Brandon Hamilton officiating. A visitation will be from 6 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Donald Bernard Hoffman

LEWISBURG — Donald Bernard Hoffman, 80, passed away Friday, Feb. 21, 2014.

Don asked that his body be donated to the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. A memorial celebration of Don’s life will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28, at Old Stone Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dexter Taylor officiating. A light luncheon will follow in the Fellowship Hall.

Frances Irene Smithson Wheeler, 84, of Beckley died Saturday. Feb. 22, 2014.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and one hour prior to the services Wednesday. Burial will follow in the Canaday Cemetery at Glen View.

Ernest Withrow Jr.

Ernest Withrow, Jr., joined his wife Mary in heaven on February 21, 2014, after a short illness.

Born on July 13, 1924, in Sunlight, WV, the son of Newman Ernest Withrow and Alice Mae Fletcher Withrow, he attended Frankford High School.

He married Mary Withrow on September 16, 1948, and enjoyed their life together raising three sons. After their sons were grown, they spent their extra time camping at Pipestem State Park and Paradise Campgrounds near Blue Bend, WV.

Never one to shy away from hard work, he retired as a heavy equipment operator with W&H Construction. He got great joy out of working in his garden, chopping a load of wood, or hunting deer in the winter months. He was a friend to everyone he met, where his kindness and sense of humor were always evident. A man of great faith, he lived the word of God through his actions to others.

Ernest was preceded in death by his wife Mary Withrow, four sisters who passed away in infancy (Faye, Clara, Madeline and Halie) and two brothers Herald (Fuzz) Withrow and Arleigh (Buck) Withrow. He is survived in death by three sons Allen Withrow and wife Kaye, Dan Withrow and wife Pat, and Doug Withrow all of Ronceverte, WV. He was incredibly proud of his four grandchildren, Michael Withrow (Kerry), Kimeran Evans (Jeremy), Abigail Withrow, and Angela Withrow, and six great-grandchildren Logen, Kali, Kam, Kole, Hadley and Camden. He will also be missed by his nieces, nephews, cousins, friend Gwen Stevens and many others.

Funeral Service will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 25, 2014, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ronceverte with Rev. Ron Miller officiating. Burial will follow at the Riverview Cemetery.

Family will receive friends on Monday, February 24, 2014, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ronceverte.
