Barbara M Boone, 50, passed away Feb. 20, 2014.

John S. Cook Jr.

SCOTT DEPOT — John “Johnnie” S. Cook Jr., 93, of Scott Depot, formerly of Madison and Eunice, died Feb. 20, 2014.

Visitation by friends will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and the funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 23, at the Dorothy Assembly of God Church at Dorothy, WV. Burial will be at the Pineview Cemetery in Orgas. A tribute to Johnnie will be conducted by the Boone Masonic Lodge #162.

GILBERT — Carson Brian Gibson, 37, of Gilbert, died Feb. 19,  2014.

Roy Daniel Lawson, 61, of Hotchkiss, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014.

Orazio ‘Ray’ Lucento Jr.

TUCSON, Ariz. — Orazio “Ray” Lucento, Jr., formerly of Bud-Alpoca, WV, passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2014. Ray was living in Tucson, Arizona, at the time of his death.

Ray was born to Italian immigrants on December 6, 1925. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as a seaman on the aircraft carrier Spider in the South Pacific. In the 1940s and ’50s, he worked for the Virginian and the Norfolk & Western Railways as a machinist. After his time with the railways he worked for Columbia Gas as a welder and the Slab Fork Coal Company as an electrician. He also was a skilled stone mason and carpenter.

Ray was active in the community and in the Catholic Church. He served on the Democratic Executive Committee in Wyoming County for many years. He was a member of the American Legion in Mullens for 57 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Gloria; and first wife, Betty Jane Titta.

Those left to carry on his legacy include his second wife, Sandra Buckley, and their daughter, Angelina, of Tuscon, Arizona; sons, Orazio “Butch” Lucento, III, and wife Brenda of Christiansburg, VA, and John Lucento and wife Sheila of Beckley; siblings, Willie Lucento, Tracy Lucento, Virginia Queen, and Sonja Scott; grandchildren, Angela Hughes and husband Mark, Kenna Fox and husband Jimmy, and Nicholas Orazio Lucento; also survived by great-grandchildren, London Hughes, Colin Hughes, and Tatum Fox.

Graveside rites and committal will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2014, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity with military graveside rites following.

A family and friends gathering will be held at Blue Ridge Funeral Home from 12 to 12:45 p.m. on Saturday.

Reverend James Luther McCormick

“And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love…” 1 Cor. 13:13

On February 20, 2014, James McCormick, age 80, went to heaven to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ.

He was born on August 19, 1933, to the late Rev. Roy Luther and Ximenia Frances McCormick in Mabscott, WV.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a son, Forest Taylor, a special aunt, Ethel Weidensall, and his son-in-law, Perry Coffey.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lela Verne Harman McCormick, his daughters Cynthia Jan Messemore and husband, Billy, of Nashville, TN, Debra Cheryl Hicks and husband, Paul, of Lashmeet, WV, Melissa Kathryn Dishner and husband, Carson, of Lashmeet, WV, son James Randall McCormick of the home, five grandchildren, Christopher and Heather Hicks, and Isaiah, James, and Micah Dishner. In addition, Jim is survived by his brother, Chuck McCormick and wife Regina of Florida, and two sisters, Betty Toney of Beckley, WV, and Kathy Allen and husband Jimmy of NC.

Jim graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and went on to lead a productive life in his various careers. A twenty-year veteran of the United States Air Force, he served in Vietnam and as a supervisor in Communications at SAC headquarters. Upon retirement, Jim turned to his first calling, serving Jesus Christ and preaching the gospel in the United Methodist Church. Finally, he continued his education at the University of Virginia and Lynchburg College, earning his Master’s degree in education. He began a career at Princeton High School teaching children with behavior disorders, helping many to turn their lives around through his personal and caring attitude. He also taught college students earning their Master’s Degree at Bluefield State College. In all of his careers and in his personal life as well Jim worked tirelessly and with great passion.

Funeral services with military honors will be held in the chapel at Roselawn on Sunday, February 23, 2014. The wake will be from 1 to 2 p.m. and the memorial service will be from 2 to 3 p.m. with the Rev. Scott Sears officiating.

Roger Keaton McKinney

OCEANA — Roger Keaton McKinney, 62, of Oceana, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at Raleigh General Hospital.

He was born March 12, 1951, in Slab Fork, WV, a son of the late Bernard Burdette and Katherine Marie Pierce McKinney.

Roger was a member of the Crany Missionary Baptist Church. He loved all his family, church family and many friends. Roger was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by two brothers Herbert Lewis McKinney and Bernard Burdette McKinney, Jr.; a sister Shirley Jean McKinney; mother-in-law Madeleen Stepp; sister-in-law Charlene Blankenship; and special aunt Thelma Thompson.

Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years Geraldine Stepp McKinney; three sons Roger Wayne (Christy) McKinney and their children Douglas Keaton McKinney, and Molly Ann McKinney, Kevin Lee (Lenore) McKinney and their children Bethany LeeAnn McKinney, and Maria LeDawn McKinney, and Daniel Paul McKinney all of Oceana; four sisters Peggy (Morris) Niday of Crab Orchard, Billie Joyce (Tom) Cox of Stotesbury, Tina Lester of Richmond, VA, and JoAnn (Ron) Myatt of Belhaven, NC; two brothers Douglas Lee (Carol) McKinney of Coal City, and Harry Allen (Linda) McKinney of Stotesbury; father-in-law Grover Stepp of Crany; sister-in-law Evealene (Steve) Elkins of Lynco; two brothers-in-law Bennie (Becky) Stepp, and Kenneth (Nina) Stepp all of Crany; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral service will be held at noon on Sunday, February 23, 2014, at the Crany Missionary Baptist Church, Crany, WV, with Pastor James Walker and his son Kevin Lee McKinney officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Stepp Family Cemetery, Crany, WV. Military Rites will be conducted by the Wyoming County Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2014, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home.

Family and friends will serve as pall bearers. Honorary pall bearers will be Doyle Johnson, and Bud Smith who were his fishing buddies.

Phyllis ‘Ann’ Morris

OAK HILL — Ms. Phyllis “Ann” Morris, 69, of Oak Hill, WV, died Thursday, February 20, 2014.

Born July 17, 1944, in Oak Hill, WV, she was the youngest child of the late Alfred and Susie Yancey Morris.

She was a member of Community Restoration Worship Center.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Helen Perry, Florence Fountain, Francis Morris and Elsie Browder, and brother, Leon Morris.

Left to cherish precious memories are her sister-in-law, Gerri Morris of Bronx, NY; nieces and caregivers, Drema Browder of Oak Hill, WV, and Mary Evans of Beckley, WV; great-nieces and nephews she helped raise, Maria Jamison, Mary Evans, Carmen Evans, Kimberly Browder, Tiffney (Dave) Canterbury, Jeremiah Woods, Nevaeh Smith, and David Canterbury, Jr.;  and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

Lewis Alonso Pogorelski

OAK HILL — Lewis Alonso Pogorelski, 81, of Oak Hill, WV, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at CAMC Memorial in Charleston, WV.

Born Sept. 21, 1932, at Whipple, he was the son of the late Antoni and Josephine Pogorelski.

Mr. Pogorelski proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force. He retired from Cranberry Lumber. He was a faithful member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Oak Hill. Mr. “Pogo” was an avid supporter of the Oak Hill Red Devils and enjoyed watching many sporting events.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his six sisters, Anta Hydella, Virginia Casey, Pauline Janisewski, Rose Wojtowicz, Josephine Fiorelli and Elizabeth Burden.

Survivors include his wife, Joleta Pogorelski of Oak Hill; his four children, Lisa Pogorelski of Oak Hill, Walter Pogorelski of Rapid City, SD, Toni Pogorelski of Scarbro, and Kelli Casimir of Falling Waters, WV; five grandchildren, Samuel, Aaron and Antoni Pogorelski and Madison and Maegan Casimir; and one great-grandchild, Zariah Pogorelski.

A memorial service to celebrate Mr. Pogorelski’s life will be held Saturday, Feb. 22, at 3 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home, with Father Carlos Melocoton officiating.

OAK HILL — Mrs. Roberta Taylor, 93, of Oak Hill died Wednesday, February 19, 2014.

Born December 30, 1920, in Clifton Forge, VA, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence Merchant and Charles Ashwood and Nettie Long and Bessie Ashwood.

She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church of Harlem Heights.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raleigh Taylor; daughter, Margaret Lee Taylor; sister, Nellie Humes; and brothers, Clarence Merchant and Lawrence Merchant.

Left to cherish precious memories are her sons, Charles Taylor of Sterling, VA, Clarence Taylor of Falls Church, VA, Lawrence Taylor of Pineville, WV, Robert Taylor of Fort Washington, MD, and Larry Taylor of Oak Hill, WV; daughter, Sheila Taylor of Upper Marlboro, MD; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Eva Workman

LANSING — Eva Louise Workman, 93, of Lansing passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2014, at Fayette Nursing & Rehab Center, Fayetteville.

Born on July 19, 1920, at Lansing, she was the daughter of the late James Wallace and Annie Lewis Workman.

Eva spent her life caring for her parents until her father’s death, when she went to work for the Beckley Child Care Center, where she touched many lives. She was a faithful lifelong member of the Lansing Baptist Church.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Clarence, Dennis, Zennis, Robert, Bill and James Workman; sisters, Madeline and Virginia; Niece, Sandra Bailey; Nephews, Herold Biggs, John and Wally Robinson. She was the last survivor of her immediate family.

Survivors include her nieces and nephews: Audrey Coppa, James (Jock) Workman, Jill White, Earldine Robinson, Kathi Pridemore, Laura Campbell, James Workman, Lee Ann Sowder, Mark Workman, Robert Workman, Karen Black and Melanie Lawhorn.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, February 23, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Lansing Baptist Church in Lansing with Pastor Kenny Hayes officiating.
