Elsie Akers

Elsie Akers, 99 of Coal City, passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2014.

Betty Miles Allen

Betty Miles Allen, 83, of Temple St, Beckley, went home to be with the Lord on February 17th, 2014. 

Born November 6th, 1930, in Grandview W.Va., she was the daughter of Wilda Shoemaker of Grandview.

Betty worked for 20 years at Beckley Newspaper before becoming a nurse and working for 23 years at Raleigh General Hospital. After retirement she was a caregiver and a devoted church volunteer.

She is preceded in death by her husband Jennings R. Allen of Beckley, mother Wilda Shoemaker, and Grandfather and Grandmother James and Dora Miles.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter Becky Wheeler and husband Paul of Williamsburg, Va., and her son C.R. Allen and his wife Darlene of Shady Spring; grandchildren Thad Wheeler, wife Kathyrn and son Trenton of Wytheville, Va., Emmy Corbin, husband John and son Jacob of Providence Forge, Va., Allie Cobb and husband Tyler of Williamsburg, Va., Jennifer Dillon, husband Jeremy and son Matthew of Beaver, Renee Dodson husband Robert daughter Carleigh and son River of Crab Orchard.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at the Blue Ridge Funeral Home in Prosperity, with Pastor Dr. Charles Bright officiating.

Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Pallbearers will be Paul Wheeler, Thad Wheeler, Jeremy Dillon, Matthew Dillon, Robert Dodson and honorary pallbearers River Dodson, and J.W. Miles.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

Randy Bailey Jr.

Charles Randolph “Randy” Bailey Jr., 49, of Mullens, passed away on Friday, February 14, 2014, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, following a long illness.

Randy was born on December 1, 1964, at Mullens and was the son of Charles R. “Tinker” Bailey Sr. of Mullens and Gloria Janis Dooley Bailey of Mullens.

Randy was previously employed in Law Enforcement as a Police Officer for the town of Lester and Rhodell and was a Deputy for the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department. He was a graduate of Mullens High School and the West Virginia State Police Academy at Institute. He was a member of the Beckley Masonic Lodge No. 95 A.F.& A.M

Randy was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Henry B. Dooley and Ara Canterbury Dooley and his paternal grandparents, Walter Nash Bailey and Edna Mae Hughes Bailey.

Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Gloria Janis Bailey of Mullens; his father, Charles R. “Tinker” Bailey Sr. of Mullens; and one sister, Dana Bailey Long of Bonita Springs, Fla.

Services will be noon, Friday, February 21, 2014, at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tommy Knotts officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour prior to services Friday at the funeral home.

Masonic graveside rites will be conducted by the Beckley Masonic Lodge No. 95 A.F. & A.M.

Pallbearers will be members of the Beckley Masonic Lodge.

FAYETTEVILLE — Genevieve Smith Bennett, 84, of Fayetteville, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014.

Roger Dale Gillian, 66, of Beckley, passed away at his home on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014.

Memorial services will be conducted at the Beckley Church of God, 2213 South Kanawha Street, Beckley, on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at 1 p.m. with Bishop F.D. Sexton officiating.

Randolph B. Holley

ELK KNOB — Randolph B. Holley, 67, of Elk Knob, died at 7:14 p.m. Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea, after a long and courageous battle with leukemia.

He was born on August 4, 1946, in Charlottesville, Va., a son of the late James Lewis Holley Sr. and Audrey Payne Holley.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Holley; three daughters, Audrey Ann Holley at home, Christy and Melody Holley, both of Virginia; four brothers, Harold H. Holley and wife Doris of Hinton, Otis W. Holley and wife Nan of Staunton, Va., Keith P. Holley of Charlottesville, Va., and Everette C. Holley and wife Patsy of Cleburne, Texas; one sister, Mary H. Wills and  husband Pete of Gordonsville, Va.; mother-in-law, Betty Waugh of Ronceverte, W.Va.; sisters-in-law, Sue Holley of Gordonsville, Va. and Diana Cochran and husband Mike of Princeton, W.Va.; brother-in-law, Warren Phillips of Keswick, Va. A host of nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, James L. Holley Jr.  and sisters, Virginia Leake, Sue Coiner and Ann H. Phillips.

Randy was a native Virginian, raised in Louisa County. He was a retired trainmaster with Norfolk Southern Railway. He was a former president of the West Virginia Elks Lodge, and had served as district deputy for the Grand Exalted Ruler. Randy was a member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church at Hix. He cherished life at his farm, showing Tennessee Walker horses, golfing, his church family, neighbors and friends. He treasured his close and loving relationship with his siblings. Randy and Mary Ann; spent many, many joyful hours watching Audrey Ann participating in various sports.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 22, 2014, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton, with Pastor Benny Allen officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Emily Couric Clinic Medical Cancer Center, Health System Development Office, PO Box 800773, Charlottesville, VA 22908-0773. Designate contributions to Leukemia/Lymphoma Research in memory of Randy Holley.

TUSCON, Ariz. — Orazio “Ray” Lucento Jr., 88 of Tuscon, formerly of Beckley, passed away on Friday, February 14, 2014.

Graveside rites and committal will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity, with military graveside rites following.

A family and friends gathering will be held at Blue Ridge Funeral Home from noon to 12:45 p.m. on Saturday.

Dewey Arnold McGuire

DANESE — On Tuesday, February 18, 2014, God called Dewey Arnold McGuire, 84, of Crickmer Road, Danese, to Heaven and reunited him with his beloved wife of 63 years, Iris Jolene Kincaid McGuire.

Born July 6, 1929, at Springdale, W.Va., he was the son of the late Aubrey and Elva  Hanshew McGuire.

Dewey was a member of Faith Freewill Baptist Church of Danese, a retired coal miner, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who loved his family unconditionally.

Dewey passed away at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, following a short illness.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by three sisters, Evelyn Simms, Lola McGuire, and Nola Nadine Sheets; six brothers, Raymond, Howard, Basil “Sonny”, Elmer, Melvin, and Marvin McGuire.

Survivors include four daughters, Carolyn Kelley of Meadow Creek, W.Va., Connie McGuire of Danese, Cathy McGuire of Hinton, W.Va. and Caryn Williams and husband William of Danese; two sisters, Erma Williams of Hinton and Eva Zsifkov of Clarkston, Mich.; one brother, Emory McGuire and wife Julia of Danese; five grandchildren: Kristi Fernatt, Albert Halstead III, Amelia Halstead, Jason and Cayli Bolen and five great-grandchildren: Whitney Fernatt, James and David Rose, Aubreigh Raines and Robert Bolen.                                  

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2014, at the Faith Freewill Baptist Church of Danese, with Pastor Alan Whitt officiating. Burial will follow in the J. H. Walker Cemetery of Crickmer, W.Va.

Pallbearers will be William Williams, Jason Bolen, Lonnie Fernatt, Richard Kincaid, Norman Fox and Mike Lowe.

Friends may visit with the family Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m., February 21, 2014, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle.

COVINGTON, Va. — Juanita Jane Thomas Pace, 82, of Covington, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014.

LaDale Fitts Parker

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — LaDale Fitts Parker, of Chambersburg, formerly of Beckley, died Saturday, February 15, 2014.

She was born on November 6, 1943, to the late Vernon C. and Viola Fitts. She was one of ten children.

On December 2, 1965, LaDale married the late Charles W. Parker Sr. and to that union were born two children, Charles Jr. and Toy. Charles was a member of the U.S. Air Force and as his wife, LaDale made the decision to be a homemaker. 

While a resident of Beckley she was a member of Heart of God Ministries where she served on the Greeter Board and as Assistant Church Clerk. Because of her love for Christ and continued desire to be a faithful servant she attended several churches when she moved to Pennsylvania.  

In addition to her parents and husband, LaDale was preceded in death by four sisters, Sethree Washington, Mae Glenn, Doretha Jones and Vivian Puriefoy and four brothers, Pete, Jake, Hiawatha and Ronnie Fitts. 

She leaves to cherish her son Charles W. Parker Jr. and his wife Karen Parker; her daughter Toy Lynne Tavarez and her fiancé Devon Lee Draine; five granddaughters: Gaby Parker, Emoni Tavarez, Desiree Tavarez, Katie Parker, and Ella Parker; a brother Franklin Fitts, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. 

Funeral service will be noon, Friday, February 21, 2014, at Heart of God Ministries, 1703 S. Kanawha Street, Beckley with Bishop Fred T. Simms officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity. Friends may call one hour prior to the service.
