Patricia Sue ‘Patty’ Barber

STATESVILLE, N.C. — Patricia Sue “Patty” Barber, 68, of Statesville, passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014. 

Funeral services will be noon Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ronald Young officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be sent to the Gordon Hospice House, 2341 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625.

Opal I. Franco

RICHWOOD — Opal I. Franco, 92, of Richwood, entered into heaven on Saturday, February 8, 2014, at Nicholas County Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, after a long illness.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Franco; grandson, Gary Gordon Jr.; one sister and five brothers.

Survivors include three sons, Gary Gordon Sr. wife, Louetta, Richwood, David Franco, Madison, Tenn., and Brent Franco wife, Nancy, Richwood; a daughter, Kathy Collins husband, Gene Fenwick, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 12, 2014, at Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood. Officiating sons: Rev. Gary Gordon and Rev. Brent Franco.

Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park, Richwood.

Friends may call Wednesday, February 12, 2014, from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home in Richwood.

Harry J. Halsey

Harry J. Halsey, age 92, of Prosperity, WV, entered Heaven peacefully at the Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill, WV, on Saturday, February 8, 2014.

Born on May 13, 1921, at Coon Fork, WV, he was the son of the late Andrew Albert Halsey and Sarah Elizabeth Farley Halsey.

Mr. Halsey was a former employee of Cabot Gas, Raleigh County Board of Education, and ended his career as a carpenter for several independent contractors. Mr. Halsey was a WWII Army Veteran who served in the South Pacific as a communications specialist.

Mr. Halsey attended the Skelton Freewill Baptist Church, and the Little Valley Baptist Church. He enjoyed carpentry, was an avid gardener, and enjoyed the Grand Ole Opry Music Legends, and Gospel Music.

Mr. Halsey was a loving husband, dad, grandfather, neighbor, and a simple hard-working Christian.

Mr. Halsey was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Rose Marie Adkins Halsey, by brothers, Earl, Cash, and Carson Halsey, by sisters, Carrie Halsey and Ella Mae Miller.

Survivors include his children: Juanita Dooley and her husband Joe of Summersville, Anice Hatfield and her husband Rev. Greg Hatfield of Ballard, and William “Bill” Halsey and his wife Neil of Iron Station, NC.

Two sisters, Pansy Halsey and Wanda Morgan, both of Pineville.

Seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-granddaughters also survive. His special friends, Keith and Diana Shumate, who helped care for him.

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Harry J. Halsey on Wednesday,  February 12, 2014, at 1 p.m. at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, with Rev. Bill Bennett and Rev. Junior Plumley, and music by Rev. Larry and Greta Bolen. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Beckley.

Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

VERNER — Joe James Lawrence Sr., 81, of Verner, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014.

Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Hollywood Cemetery at Gilbert, with the Rev. Denny May officiating.

FRANKFORD — Maynard Luther McMillion, 84, of Frankford, passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014.

Delmon C. ‘Cricket’ McPeek

WHITESVILLE — Delmon C. “Cricket” McPeek, of the Seng Creek area of Whitesville, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Armstrong Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ricky Peters officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery, Orgas. Friends may call one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Charles Pugh

Charles Pugh, 82, of Eccles, passed away Monday, Feb. 10, 2014.

Arrangements are pending completion at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, 1901 S. Kanawha St., Beckley.

Sandra Wine Riner

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Sandra Wine Riner, 62, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Monday, February 10, 2014, in Harrisonburg, after a year-long battle with cancer.

Sandra was born in Harrisonburg, Va., to Ray and Ann Wine on September 24, 1951.

She attended Harrisonburg High School, graduating in 1969. She went on to earn a degree in Speech and Language Pathology from East Tennessee State University. She worked for Harrisonburg City Schools at Keister Elementary and retired after 30 years of service. She was very proud to have been an educator in the public school system. After retirement she worked as a travel agent with Turner Travel.

She was involved in Bible studies, book clubs, and other groups where she could spend time with close friends she made over many years. Sandy enjoyed traveling all over the world with her husband Bill and spending time with her children and granddaughters. She encouraged and supported all of those around her with love and optimism in everything she did. Her spontaneous outlook on life was contagious.

Sandra is survived by her husband, William, of Harrisonburg; children: Paul and wife Laura of Harrisonburg and Carter and wife Sarah of Woodstock; parents Ray and Ann Wine of Bridgewater, brothers and sisters Kevin of Huntersville, NC, Kim of Winston-Salem, NC, and Michael of Richmond, Va.; granddaughters Brently and McKenna of Woodstock and Leonie of Harrisonburg; mother-in-law Marjorie Riner of Bridgewater; aunt and uncle Jay and Louise Harris of Louisville, Ky.; three nieces and three nephews.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the RMH Hahn Cancer Center and all of the doctors and nurses who provided such wonderful care. Sandy was so thankful for your excellent care and thoughtful support over the last year.

Memorial service will be held at Harrisonburg First Church of the Brethren on Saturday, February 15th, at 10 a.m. with Reverends Ron Wyrick and Beth Jarrett officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

Vera Helen Shortridge

VICTOR — Vera Helen Shortridge, 88, of Victor, passed away at her home Sunday, February 9, 2014, following a long illness.

Born November 8, 1925, at Elmo, WV, she was the daughter of the late Roger and Dora Bickford Sweet.

Other than her parents she was preceded in death by three sisters, Sarah Leonard, Virginia Bragg, Naomi Meadows, and one brother, Roger Sweet.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Bob Shortridge of Hico, and her son Larry Shortridge and his wife Betty of Hico; two grandchildren, Lisa Carrico and husband Donnie and Tresa Miller and husband Mike; four great-grandchildren, Dallas Miller, Delaney, Donnie and Montana Carrico.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 12, 2014, at Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor, with Pastor Mike Skaggs officiating.

Friends may gather with the family on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel, Ansted.

Charles Thomas Sink

THOMAS MOUNTAIN — Charles Thomas Sink, 95, of Thomas Mountain passed away Friday, February 7, 2014, at the Bowers Hospice House.

He was born June 15, 1918, in Raleigh County, a son of the late Clyde and Ivory Williams Sink.

Charles was a retired coal miner with over 40 years of service. A World War II Veteran having served from the start to finish of the war in the U.S. Army for 1 year and 4 years in the Marine Corps. He obtained the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and served on the USS Wyoming. He enjoyed fishing, bird watching and was a champion target shooter. Charles loved listening to big band music, dancing and he had a great sense of humor and was a Protestant by Faith.

He is survived by his wife, Ethelda Smith Sink, children, Carolyn (Okie) Thompson of Crab Orchard, Stephen Sink of Thomas Mountain, Scott (Connie) Sink of Thomas Mountain, Melissa Savage and friend Keith of Cowen, Stewart (Beverly) Sink of Normantown, Daniel (Shawana) Sink of Cowen, Charles Sink of Thomas Mountain. 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, son Bill Sink and son-in-law Gene Savage preceded him in death.

Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 11, 2014, at Morris Funeral Home, Cowen. Burial with military graveside rites conducted by V.F.W. Post 3738 will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, February 10, 2014, at the funeral home.

Services are entrusted to the care of Morris Funeral Home.

BALLARD — Tony Allen Songer, 49, of Ballard, formerly of Rich Creek, Va., passed away Friday, Feb. 7, 2014.

Harold Clayton Webb

FOREST, Va. — Harold Clayton Webb, 77, of Forest, and formerly of Beckley, went to be with his Lord Friday, February 7, 2014.

Born in Wheeling, W.Va., on November 5, 1936, he was the son of the late Lloyd Robert Webb and Gladys Runyon Webb.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Ann Webb, and his stepmother, Geneive Webb.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Gloria Terry Webb; one son, Mark B. Webb; and one daughter, Terri A. Webb, all of Forest.

Harold was retired from the Department of Human Resources for the State of W.Va. and later retired from the security department with Centra Health. He was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 2014, at Thomas Road Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Barrett and the Rev. David Heerspink officiating.

Nellie Doll Lowe Wright

Nellie Doll Lowe Wright, 88, of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 10, 2014.

Born April 15, 1925, in Chattaroy, she was the daughter of the late Joshua and Ellie Thurston Gearhart.

Nellie was a retired employee of the West Virginia Turnpike Authority, last serving as a supervisor. She was also a member of Coal City Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, Nellie was preceded in death by her first husband Roscoe Ellsworth Lowe, her son Richard Ellsworth Lowe, and her grandson Stephen Lowe.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband Leonard Wright of Beckley; her son John Lowe and his wife Leecreedia of Maryville, Tenn.; a stepson James Wright of Greensboro, N.C.; a special niece Bonnie Gillman and her husband Jim of Chattaroy; 7 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Service celebrating the life of Nellie will be held Wednesday, February 12, 2014, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home with her Pastor Rev. Lowell Black and her son Rev. John Lowe officiating.

Following the service Nellie will be entombed in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Friends may gather with the family from noon until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
