Wrena Vae Elswick Bailey

Wrena Vae Elswick Bailey, a native of Glen Fork, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at St. Francis Hospital in Charleston.

Born December 14, 1937, in Glen Fork, she was the daughter of the late Mamous Elswick Greer.

Wrena was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. Everyone who knew her spoke of her kind and generous spirit. She would give all she had and never ask for anything in return.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Bailey; her daughter, Drema Pauley; two brothers Phillip (Butch) Greer and William (Billy) Greer; two sisters Martha Greer and Rose Mann.

Those left to mourn her passing are her daughters, Sharon (JD) Walls of Beckley, Marilyn (Roy) Mosley of Glen Rogers, Katherine (Danny) Workman of Cyclone, Cherry (Robert) Bailes of Beckley, Tina Fitzpatrick of Glen Fork, daughter Amber (Jimmy Jones) Daniel, a granddaughter whom she raised and shared a birthday with; one son, Danny (Boone) Bailey of Glen Fork; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Dora Bailey of Ravencliff, Fredia (Jim) Wray of Ravencliff, Deloris (Cecil) Lane of Glen Fork, and Viller (Dood) Massey of Denton, N.C.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, February 8, 2014, at the Pine Grove Baptist Church with the her son-in-law, Rev. JD Walls, Rev. DeWayne Hurd, and Rev. Ernest Francis officiating. Burial will follow in the Pine Grove Cemetery.

Friends may gather with the family from 1 p.m. until the time of service.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

James ‘Jim’ Bailey Jr.

James “Jim” Bailey Jr., 63, of Cranberry, passed away at his home on Feb. 5, 2014, following a long illness.

UNION — James E. Bonds, 71, of Union, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, after a battle with cancer.

Born Sept. 13, 1942, at Glen Daniel, he was the son of the late Jess and Dorthy Martin Bonds.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ovena, in 2013.

He was a member of The First Baptist Church of Fairlea and retired from The Greenbrier Hotel.

He is survived by stepchildren, Lewis (Denise) Willis of Conway, AR, Sally Willis and Terry (Donna) Willis of Union; brothers, Charles of Beckley and Carlos of Talcott; a sister, Betty Plumly of Beckley; nine stepgrandchildren, and many stepgreat-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at McCraw Funeral Home in Lewisburg with the Revs. Joseph Hutchinson, Phillip Hunt and Dina Stalnaker officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens at Lewisburg.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

McCraw Funeral Home in Lewisburg is in charge of the arrangements.

Emily Lynn Bowyer, 9, of Beckley, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with the Rev. Jerry Tyree officiating. Burial will be at Moles-Williams Cemetery, Artie. Friends may call one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home.

Katey Jo Adkins Eller

JENKINS, Ky. — Katey Jo Adkins Eller, 67, of Jenkins, Ky., formerly of Beckley, departed this life on February 2, 2014.

She was the daughter of the late Ira Adkins and Dorothy Havens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert D. Eller.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Gail, and son-in-law, Richard Briggs, of Jenkins; her son, Eric, and daughter-in-law, Christi Eller, of Inez, Ky.; three granddaughters, Lexie Eller, Makayla Briggs, and Emma Begley; four grandsons, Brody Eller, Justin Eller, Nathan Begley, and Wesley Begley; four sisters, Irelene Adkins Settle of Salem, Va., Barbara Adkins Gray and husband, Leroy, of Oak Hill, W.Va., Drema Adkins Price and husband, David, of Nashville, N.C., and Deborah Adkins Fridley and husband, Gary, of Beaver; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews; an uncle, Don Tate of Maple Fork, and an aunt and uncle, Shelva and Bernard Crump of MacArthur, W.Va.; and many cousins.

Services are 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley. Following the services Katey will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

CLINTONVILLE — James Pershing Evans, 72, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014.

John ‘Johnnie’ Robert Furry

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — John “Johnnie” Robert Furry, 93, of White Sulphur Springs,  died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, in the chapel of Shanklin Funeral Home with Bishop Duane Zobrist officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Richard ‘Dick’ Grist

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Richard “Dick” Grist, of the Sunnyside Retirement Community, Harrisonburg, Va., formerly of Princeton, W.Va., died January 30, 2014, in Harrisonburg.

Mr. Grist was born December 1, 1925, in Bessemer, Pa., and was the son of Michael M. Grist and Pansy McFarlin Grist.

On August 30, 1947, he married Donna Jean Murphy of New Castle, Pa., who survives.

He served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps, 1943-1945, graduated from Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa, with a bachelor’s degree in Forestry. He worked for Georgia-Pacific Corporation for 38 years, retiring in 1988, and moved from Princeton, W.Va., to the Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Community in 1994 in Harrisonburg.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Harrisonburg, and served as an elder and taught Sunday School.

He was a member of the West Virginia Forestry Association since 1964 and served as President in 1982-84. Dick received the distinguished West Virginian Award in 1994 and was enshrined in the West Virginia Agriculture and Forestry Hall of Fame in 1996.

He is survived by his wife, Donna J. Grist; one sister, Doris Grist Johnson and husband, Ed, of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Linda Grist Cunningham and husband, Ed, of Key West, Fla., and Elizabeth Grist of West Des Moines, Iowa; three sons, Michael Grist and wife, Vicki, of Millboro, Va., Richard Grist Jr. and wife, Mary, of Clintonville, W.Va., and Robert Grist and wife, Kara, of Fishersville, Va.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted in the Bethel Chapel at Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Community at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 8, 2014, by the Rev. Paul O’Gorek and the Rev. Dr. Kyle Key officiating.

Mr. George Harris, 83, of Beckley, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014.

Graveside service will be noon Saturday, Feb. 8, at Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley. The procession will leave the Ritchie & Johnson Funeral Parlor, 748 S. Fayette St., Beckley, at 11:30 a.m.

Cynthia ‘Pinny’ Goldsmith Hill

FAYETTEVILLE — Cynthia “Pinny” Goldsmith Hill, of Fayetteville, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2014.

Born on October 14, 1932, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Robert S. Goldsmith Sr. and Elizabeth G. Goldsmith.

Pinny graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and attended WVU where she was a pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma. In her lifetime, she was very active as a Scouting leader, a founder and call taker of CONTACT Services (a nonprofit crisis center hotline), an Advisory Board Member of Rescare South, Board Member of Friends of the Fayetteville Library, member of the Woodland Garden Club and volunteer at the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce. She was an active member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church where she served on the Vestry and as a Senior Warden.

Pinny enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting, cooking, playing golf and bridge. She lived her life around her family and friends, all of whom she adored. In her later years, she devoted much time to caring for many of her dear friends.

Pinny was preceded in death by her husband, C.R. “Bud” Hill Jr., her parents and siblings, Robert S. Goldsmith Jr. and Mary G. Banks.

Survivors include her children, C.R. “Rennie” Hill, III, and wife Ann W. Hill, Kathryn H. Dutton, J. William Hill and Mary R. Hill; grandchildren Megan H. Bostwick (Brock), Laura H. Frame (Jeremy), W. Spencer Hill, W. Mason Dutton, Elizabeth R. Dutton and three great-granddaughters.

A memorial service will be held in her honor at 3 p.m. Saturday, February 8, 2014, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Oak Hill, with Rev. Roy Gene Crist officiating. A reception will follow at the Holiday Lodge, Oak Hill. A private family burial service will be held at a later date.

NAPLES, Fla. — Frank H. Marshall, of Naples, Fla., a native of Page, passed away Feb. 2, 2014.

Kenneth Kane Meadows

Kenneth Kane Meadows, age 71, of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley on Monday, February 3, 2014.

Born on November 13, 1942, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Carley and Pearl Aliff Meadows.

Mr. Meadows was a retired truck driver for P.I. Products. He had been a resident of Beckley most of his life.

Mr. Meadows enjoyed watching wrestling and working on vehicles, and he attended the Beckley Praise Church.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Meadows was preceded in death by two sisters, Joyce French and Barbara French, and by one grandson, Vern Lilly.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife of 52 years, Barbara Biggs Meadows. His children, Teresa Lilly and her companion Jack of Beckley, Kenneth Meadows “Buddy” Jr. of Beckley, Kathy Flannery and her husband Jimmy of Beckley, Johnny Meadows  and his companion Jennifer of Coal City, Katrina Moore and her companion Lou of Beckley, Elisha Marshall and her husband Daryl of Beckley, and Thomas Meadows at home; 12 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Brothers, Ronnie Meadows and his wife Glenna of White Oak, Jimmy Meadows and his wife Ruby of Mabscott, Carley “Junior” Meadows of Crab Orchard, and Joey Meadows of Raleigh. Sisters, Almedia Culver of Shady Spring, and Carol Laney of Bradenton, Fla.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Saturday, February 8, 2014, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Paul Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, W.Va.

Friends may visit with the family from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Sheila Raven Belcher Rinehart

ROANOKE, Va. — Sheila Raven Belcher Rinehart, 73, of Roanoke, formerly of Shady Spring, went home to be with the Lord on January 30, 2014.

Born June 9, 1940, in Welch, W.Va., Sheila was the daughter of the late Hiller and Neta Belcher.

She graduated from Welch High School and attended West Virginia Business College and Beckley College.

Sheila married John Rinehart on June 18, 1960, and served faithfully alongside him for many years of his bi-vocational ministry, and also served as the bookkeeper for Industrial Electric Corporation. An avid flower gardener, she was especially fond of roses. She also loved Christian music and enjoyed her travels on several Southern Gospel cruises. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Sheila will be deeply missed by those who knew her.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, John; her daughters, Susan Rinehart Stilwell and her husband, Steve, of Roanoke, Va.; Monica Rinehart Winter and her husband, Jerald, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and Janet Rinehart Hale and her husband, Andrew, of Roanoke, Va.

Sheila was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Karis Amanda Winter, in 2009, and is survived by her grandchildren: Scott Stilwell, Sarah Stilwell, Olivia Winter, Adam Hale, and Asher Hale.

Sheila leaves behind a host of extended family who loved her dearly, including her siblings and their spouses, Alvin and Ethel Belcher, Tommy and Linda Belcher, and Cherry and Steve Titus.

The family gratefully acknowledges the staff at Brandon Oaks Rehabilitation Center for their tender care, as well as the many friends and family who visited and faithfully prayed for Sheila.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home in Beckley will host visitation on Friday, February 7, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. The memorial service will be held at Blue Ridge Funeral Home at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2014, with the Revs. Robert Lane and Don Deel officiating.

M. Kent Roop

M. Kent Roop, age 84, of Beckley, passed away at the Beckley VA Medical Center on Monday, February 3, 2014.

Born on November 1, 1929, in Allen Junction, he was the son of the late Theodore Roop and Lena Greer Roop.

Mr. Roop was retired from the Norfolk and Southern Railway as a conductor, and he was also a U.S. Army Veteran. Mr. Roop was a former member of the Church of God Family Worship Center, and attended the Faith Community Church.  

Mr. Roop spent his childhood at Allen Junction, and had made his home in Beckley for the past 32 years.  

He loved serving the Lord, and is now receiving his reward in Heaven.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife of 38 years, Margaret Williams Roop; four daughters, Deborah Kopytowski of Chapel Hill, N.C., Lisa Felice (Adrian) of Darlington, S.C., Tina Cook (Tommy) of Beckley, and Jami Woolwine (Travis) of Beckley.

Five granddaughters, Shana Johnson of Beckley, Erin Cook of Beckley, Merci Matherly of Beckley, Danielle Kopytowski of Chapel Hill, NC, and Dominique Kopytowski of Chapel Hill, N.C.,; a grandson, Adrian Felice of Darlington, S.C., and a great-grandson, Drew Nazaruk of Chapel Hill, NC.

His siblings, Ray Roop of Allen Junction, W.Va., Vernon Roop of Bluefield, W.Va., Keith Roop of Stafford, Va., Helen Hudson of Cleveland, Tenn., and Clara Waddell of Cranberry, W.Va.

Funeral Services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of M. Kent Roop on Friday,  February 7, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the Church of God Family Worship Center, Pinewood Drive, Beckley, with Pastor Sam Peterson officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, W.Va.

Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services on Friday at the church.  Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post #32 Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

Ancil Allen Street

Ancil Allen Street, age 82, of Pluto Road, Shady Spring, passed away at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital on Monday, February 3, 2014.

Born on March 13, 1931, in Missouri, he was the son of the late Ancil Lloyd Street and Virginia Street.

Mr. Street was a former employee of McDonald Douglas in Titusville, Fla., and was a U.S. Army Veteran.

He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy Street, and by a son James Street.

Survivors include his daughter, Janet Woolf and her husband Eric of Cocoa, Fla.; a granddaughter Crystal Bennett and her husband J.D. of Pluto Road, Shady Spring, with whom he had made his home. A grandson Michael Street and his wife Sheila of Cocoa, Fla. Six great-grandchildren, Alexis and James Bennett, Brooke, Emily, Khloe, and Hunter Street; a sister Peggy Bellinger of Mount Dora, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Charles Bingham of Dover, Tennessee.

There will be no visitation or funeral services.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — James Milton Turner, 89, of Fort Wayne, formerly of Summers County, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014.

Dallas Walker

BUCKEYE — Dallas Walker, 68, of Buckeye, formerly of Coal City, passed away on February 3, 2014, at CAMC after a short illness.

Dallas retired from Flowers Baking Company. He was a member of the United States Army and was a Vietnam War veteran. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Dallas was preceded in death by his wife Elaine and a daughter Amy Dalis, his father Emery “Duck” Walker, his mother Irene (Bolen) Walker; a sister Nioka “Susie” (Walker) Hardin, a sister Rayola (Walker) Nance and a brother William “Mack” Walker.

He is survived by his daughter Lori (Walker) Pack and her husband Casey of Beckley, a grandson Kristopher Caleb Pack currently attending Marshall University and a granddaughter Alison Kate Pack still residing at home. Also survivors include Elaine’s children, a sister Hope (Walker) Gillespie of Coal City, a sister Roberta Carol of Beckley, a brother Dan and his wife Connie of Beckley, a brother Quincy Oran and his wife Joyce of Radford, Va., a brother John and his wife Evelyn also of Christiansburg, Va., and a brother Mickey James and his wife Lynn of Beckley. Dallas is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and a large extended family.

Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service to celebrate his life at Melton Mortuary Chapel on Saturday, February 8th, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Paul Zutaut officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 11 a.m. until the service time.

SOUTH CHARLESTON — Michael Workman, 59, of South Charleston, formerly of Verdunville, passed away Feb. 3, 2014.
