ALDERSON — Cecil Lewis Bennett, 75 of Alderson, passed away Sunday morning, Jan. 26, 2014.

BROOKS — Pearl Virginia Richmond Berry, 89, of Brooks, passed away Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014.

BAISDEN — Ricky Jonathan Blankenship passed away Jan. 24, 2014.

Ronald D. Bonar

AMIGO — Ronald D. Bonar, 65, of Amigo, joined the Angels in Heaven on January 26th after a short battle with cancer.

Born on January 31, 1948, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Clifford L. and Lillie Mae Graham Bonar.

Ronnie is survived by his wife of 44 years, Phyllis; daughter, Ginger Smith and husband Kenny of Rhodell; two granddaughters, Brandi and Kristen Smith whom he loved dearly; one sister, Brenda Lambert of Orlando, Fla., plus many more family and friends.

Ronnie had a great love for antique and model cars. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, January 30, 2014, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with Pastor Curtis England officiating. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 32 Honor Guard. There will be no visitation.

Pallbearers will be Samuel Muscari Jr., Archie Sturgill, Robert and Robbie Whitt, Arte Burnette and Frank Woolwine.

Ola Shrewsberry Cole

LERONA — Ola Shrewsberry Cole, age 77, of Lerona, formerly of Ghent, passed away at the Princeton Community Hospital on Saturday, January 25, 2014.

Born on June 30, 1936, at Basin, she was the daughter of the late Paris Shrewsberry and  Louise Farley Shrewsberry.

Mrs. Cole was a former head waitress at the Wine Cellar in Columbus, Ohio, for almost 20 years, and was of the Christian faith. She had made her home at Lerona for the past 25 years. Mrs. Cole enjoyed cooking, gardening, and spending time with her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Cole, by brothers, Jasper, Warren, Bennett, Garland, and Gilmer Shrewsberry, and by sisters, Helen Waddell, Wilma Peters, and Pauline Shrewsberry.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Peggy Cole of Lerona, Donna Cole and her partner Candy Southerland of Lerona, and Barbara Cole of Lerona. A granddaughter, Nichole Pennington and her husband Josiah of Hampton, Va., great-grandchildren, Eleana Lynn Pennington, Lillian Ola Pennington.

Brothers, Basil Shrewsberry and his wife B.B. of Belleview, Florida, Harry Shrewsberry and his wife Charlene of Cary, Ill., Thomas Shrewsberry of Odd, and sisters, Icy May Green of Fletcher, North Carolina, and Juanita Gay Fuller and her husband Joe of Niles, Ill. Her special pets, Shadowfax, Sable, Buddy, Willie, Kelsey, and Sasha.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Orville Setliff officiating. Burial will follow at the Paris Shrewsberry Cemetery on the Odd Road, Ghent, West Virginia.

Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be directed to the local animal shelter in memory of Mrs. Cole.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Annie Lee Huddleston-Davis-Frye

LOGAN — Annie Lee Huddleston-Davis-Frye, 85, of Logan, died Jan. 25, 2014.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at Honaker Funeral Home in Logan. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens at Godby. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Dewey A. Hooper

Dewey A. Hooper, age 73, of Shady Spring, passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at his home.

Born on March 20, 1940, at Barn, W.Va., he was the son of the late Crawford Hooper and Dorothy Ayers Hooper.

Mr. Hooper was a retired coal miner, and a member of the UMWA. He was of the Baptist faith, and was a U.S. Navy Veteran.

Mr. Hooper was preceded in death by three brothers, Jackie, Forest Gene, and Larry Dean Hooper, and by a sister, Pamela Dawn Hooper.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife of 53 years, Ethel Ayers Hooper; five children, Dewey Hooper Jr. and his wife Sherry of Shady Spring, Theressa Lee Hooper of Shady Spring, Patricia Hunter and her husband Michael of South Boston, Va.,  Larry Dean Hooper of Virginia, and Johnny Hooper of Shady Spring; a sister, Brenda Kelly of Alexandria, Virginia, 11 grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Lowell Black officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.

Gregory Curtis Lusk

OCEANA — Gregory Curtis Lusk, 58, departed this Friday, January 24, 2014.

Born February 15, 1955, in Mullens, he was the son of the late Curtis and Margaret Lusk.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Preston and Rebecca Lusk; maternal grandparents, John and Ethel Ellis.

Greg was a 1973 graduate of Oceana High School, a retired coal miner having worked for Peabody Coal Co., and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Those left to cherish his memory are two sons, Greg Lusk and wife, Sarah, of Mallory and Ryan Lusk of Morgantown; one brother, Larry Lusk and wife Barbara of Florida; a sister, Linda Brown of Oceana; two grandchildren, Nolan and Norah Lusk; his beloved pet Izzy; and a host of family and friends.

In keeping with Greg’s wishes he will be cremated.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

KOPPERSTON ROAD — Lou Ellen “Lulu” Lusk, 54, of Kopperston Road, passed away Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014.

Funeral service will be at noon Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the Little Dove Old Regular Baptist Church, Guesses Fork, Va., with Brother Danny Hurley, Danny McCoy, Roy Lester and David Lester officiating. Burial will follow in Justice Family Cemetery, Guesses Fork. Friends may gather with the family after 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, at the church.

AMIGO — Christine Mary McKinney, 89, of Amigo, passed away Monday, Jan. 27, 2014.

Helen Ruth Parsons

SPRING LAKE, Mich. — Helen Ruth Parsons, age 70, passed away peacefully at her Spring Lake home on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, following a long illness.

She was born April 7, 1943, in Dover, Del., to Donald and Helen Louise (Waddel) DeShazo.

Helen was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in 1961.

Helen was an excellent cook, voracious reader, and enjoyed doing various needle crafts throughout her life. In her later years, she enjoyed making hand-stitched quilts for family and friends.

Helen is lovingly remembered by her son, Travis (Heidi) Parsons of Spring Lake; grandson, Tyler (Meg) Parsons of Edmond, Okla.; her sister, Sharon (Pat) Morrison of Manakin Sabot, Va.; and a network of close family and friends around the country.

Lillie Frances Skaggs

OAK HILL — Lillie Frances Skaggs, 80, of Oak Hill passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014.

Mrs. Skaggs was born December 5, 1933, in Charleston and was the daughter of the late Melvin and Odessa Skaggs Withrow. She was also preceded in death by a son Kyle E. Skaggs.

Mrs. Skaggs was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church in Sugar Creek and was a home maker.

Surviving are one son, David V. Skaggs of Dixie, and one sister, Annabelle Skaggs of Ansted.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 30, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ansted with Pastor Tim Skaggs and Pastor Buzzy Legg officiating. Burial will follow in the Sugar Creek Cemetery at Sugar Creek.
