Christine Baisden, 42, passed away Friday, Jan. 24, 2014.

High Blackburn

OCEANA — High Blackburn, 91, departed this life Friday, January 25, 2014, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley following a long illness.

Born January 10, 2014, in Wyoming County, he was the son of the late George and Susan Endicott Blackburn.

Mr. Blackburn was a retired coal miner, boss and superintendent for Eastern Associated Coal Company, and a member of Oceana Delilah Methodist Church. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by the love of his life Hazel Blackburn; two sons, Joe Otis Blackburn an infant son, James Lotis Blackburn; a sister, Mary Fulks; and a son-in-law, Roger Blankenship.

Those left to cherish history are a daughter, Sharon Blankenship of Oceana; a grandson, Vernon Blackburn; two granddaughters, Melissa Childers and her husband, Rod, and Toni Stewart and her husband, Ralph; three great-grandsons, Brandon Childers, Caleb Childers and Cody Stewart; two great-granddaughters, Alison Childers and Marina Stewart; four sisters, Ocie Branhan, Maczenia Burchett, Barbara Rice and Carol Baldridge; a daughter-in-law, Peggy Blackburn; several nieces and nephews and a host of family friends.

A celebration of Mr. Blackburn’s life will be 1 p.m. Monday, January 27, 2014, at Adam Toler Memorial Chapel with Rev. David White officiating; entombment will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of service Monday at the funeral home.

Linda Jo Adams Huffman, 69, died Jan. 25, 2014.

Funeral services will be at noon Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the Central United Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Skeens and the Rev. Bobby Adams officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, at the Central United Baptist Church Christian Center, with an Eastern Star service at 7 p.m.

Ronald Lee Lilly

HINTON — Ronald Lee Lilly, 64, of 502 Greenbrier Ave., Hinton, died Saturday, January 25, 2014, at Princeton Community Hospital following a short illness.

Born March 10, 1949, in Hinton, he was the son of the late Russell F. and Gladys Eloise Meadows Lilly.

Ronnie was a 1967 graduate of Hinton High School and earned a degree in criminal justice from Bluefield State College. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as a radio operator. Ronnie was a former deputy for the Summers County Sheriff’s Department and a former police officer for the City of Hinton, serving as Chief of Police for several years. An avid hunter and fisherman, he had a great love of the outdoors and was particularly known for his love of deer hunting. He served as Secretary-Treasurer of Dawn Sportsman’s Club in Summers County. Ronnie was a heart transplant patient in 1990 at Duke University Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Hinton.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Vickey Murphy Lilly. A son, Austin Lilly and wife Aleshia of Hinton. Two granddaughters, Avery and Annalyn Lilly. A brother, Russell Lilly of Ohio, and a cousin, Linda Burdette of Beckley.

At Ronnie’s request, the body has been cremated and a private family interment will be at a later date.

Imogene Short

BRENTON — Imogene Short, 65, of Brenton, passed away Friday, January 24, 2014, at the Welch Community Hospital, following a short illness.

Born April 17, 1948, at Hurley, VA, she was the daughter of the late Carl Justus and Lettie Blankenship Justus.

Imogene was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed playing bingo and playing with her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Doug Short; 3 brothers, Harless, Carl and Vern Justus; and 2 sisters, Credith Lane and Truby Justus.

Survivors include her husband, Burns Short of the residence; A son, Michael Short and his wife, Alicia, of Brenton; 2 daughters, Lena Younce and her husband, Aaron, of Claremont, NC, Donna White and her husband, Shane, of Brenton; A brother, Frank Justus of Kopperston; 4 sisters, Gertrude Hurley of Brenton, Fannie Hawks of Brenton, Inez Smith of Sun Hill, Drema Lester of Beckley; A special granddaughter, Latasha Harper; 6 grandsons, J. R. and Zach Harper, Casey, Cameron, Thomas and Shawn D. Short.

A celebration of Imogene’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2014, in the Calfee Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Knotts officiating.

The family will receive friends from noon until the time of the service on Tuesday.

Burial will follow at Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Rodney Smith

BRISTOL, Va. — Rodney Smith, age 68, of Bristol, VA, went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 24, 2014, at Wellmont Hospice House. He was born on July 14, 1945, in Beckley, West Virginia, and made his home in the Bristol area for the past 30 years.

He is survived by: Mother: Garnet Smith, Shady Spring, WV; Wife: Leota Smith, Bristol, VA; Daughter: Marie Smith (Bill), Clover, SC; Son: Forrest Smith (Selina), Bluff City, TN; Brother: Rick Smith (Ann), Beckley, WV; Sister: Darlene Moye, Shady Spring, WV.

A funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Monday, January 27, 2014, in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Scott Price and Pastor Wayne Miller officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:45 p.m. prior to the service. The committal service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 28th, at the Mt. Rose Cemetery in Glade Springs, Virginia.

He was a self-employed carpenter and was a member of Local 970 IUPAT International Painters Association, Charleston.

He was preceded in death by Parents: David Bruce and Ruby Gladys Perry White, Sisters: Pamela Farley, Melody Hyslacker, Brothers: Danny and Don White and Grandson: Little Billy Foster.

Surviving Are: His life partner: Jessie Foster of Comfort, Son: William Tommy White of Lakeland, FL, Stepchildren: Paul and Jada Foster of Comfort, Christy Coleman of North Carolina, 8 Step Grandchildren, Brothers: John David (Alice) White of Virginia, Dale (Marilyn) White of Old Fields, Special Friends and Caregivers: Jackie McKinney and Barb Aliff and Many Nieces, Nephews, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and Friends. 

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2014, at Pentecostal Freedom Church, Ameagle, with Rev. Scotty Stanley, Rev. Jerry Tyree and Rev. Cecil McClellan officiating. Friends may call 2 hours prior to the service at the Church. Burial will follow in Estep Cemetery, Ameagle. The family will serve as pallbearers and Leonard Johnson Funeral Home, Marmet, is in charge of arrangements.
