James Sidney Allen
AUBURNDALE, Fla. — James Sidney Allen, 77, of Auburndale, formerly of Cranberry and Oak Hill, W.Va., passed away June 15, 2013.
He was the first son of the late Don and Mary Allen of Cranberry, W.Va. He was born in Cranberry on Aug. 11, 1935.
He was a disabled coal miner and member of the UMWA Local No. 5822.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Martha, Mona, and Linda; brothers: Walter, and Milton; a daughter, Vicki, and three grandsons.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary K. Allen; daughters, Janet and John Wiekline of Sandstone, W.Va., Donna and Eddie Shrout of Kilsyth, W.Va., Tina and James Morgan of Beckley; stepdaughters, Sabrina Marshall of Beckley, Jeania and Rick Dunbar of Roanoke, Va., and stepson, Larry Marshall of Auburndale; brothers, Billy and Patty Allen of Prosperity, W.Va., Joe and Mary Allen of Carlisle, W.Va., Bobby and Kitty Allen of Cranberry, W.Va., and sister, Charlote and Virgil Herron of Oak Hill; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was of the Baptist faith and attended Auburndale Community Church.
A member of Local Order of Moose Winter Haven Lodge 1023, member of Amateur Softball Association and National Federation of Amateur Softball Association Umpires. He played and coached softball for over 35 years. He was an avid sports lover.
A Celebration of “Sid’s” Life will be 1 p.m. on Monday, July 1, 2013, at the Cranberry Baptist Church with the Rev. Frankie Lyons officiating, a lifelong friend. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity, W.Va.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Richard Johnson Amon, 75, of Winston-Salem, formerly of Beckley, passed away Saturday, June 8, 2013.
In keeping with Richard’s final wishes, he was cremated. A memorial gathering will be at 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at the Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel in Shady Spring. There will be no funeral service.

William ‘Ted’ Anderson Jr.
WHITESVILLE — William “Ted” Anderson Jr., of Whitesville, died Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at the CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston, W.Va., after a short illness.
He was born in Charleston, son of the late Mary Ellen Lewis and William E. “Ted” Anderson.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served his country as an infantryman during the Vietnam War. He was a past Director of the Boone County and Kanawha County Ambulance Authorities. He worked as a police officer with the Town of Whitesville and retired as a Lieutenant from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office with 27 years of service. He was a member of Masonic Lodge # 162 Whitesville.
Ted is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Cary Ryan Anderson; daughter, Jennifer L. Anderson and longtime boyfriend, Clark Greene; son William Ryan Anderson and fiancée, Mallory Ohse; several cousins, aunts, uncles, and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon, June 29, 2013, at one o’clock at the First Presbyterian Church, Whitesville, with Clergy, Pastor David Minturn officiating. Interment, Pineview Cemetery Mausoleum, Orgas, W.Va., with Masonic Graveside Rites by Boone Lodge # 162, Whitesville. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the church.

Phyllis Elois Cox
Phyllis Elois Cox, age 75, of Coal City, WV, passed away at the Sunbridge Pine Lodge on Wednesday, June 26, 2013.
Born on May 22, 1937, at McAlpin, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Ray Harvey Meadows and Vera Geneva McClaugherty.
Mrs. Cox was a retired cook for the Raleigh County Board of Education, last working at Independence High School.
She was a member of the Coal City Community Church.
Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by her husband Howard B. Cox Jr.; a son Gerald Wayne Cox, and by siblings, Dorothy Testerman, Arnold Meadows, Ray Harvey Meadows Jr., Jack Meadows, Frances Lilly, Douglas Meadows, David Meadows, and three infant brothers and sisters.
Those survivors left to cherish her memory include children, Gary Brian Cox of Coal City, Gregory Howard Cox and his wife Lena Marie of Salisbury, N.C., two grandchildren, Kylie Ann, and Christien Alexandria.
Her siblings, Betty Wood and her husband Emerson of Huntington, W.Va., Shirley Eisenhardt of Baltimore, Md., and Janet Zaccari and her husband Samuel of Baltimore, Md., James Harold Meadows and his wife Janelle of Columbia, Ga., and Sue Campbell and her husband Jim of Crab Orchard. Her special friend Bonnie Kennison of Beckley.
Graveside Rites and Burial will be held at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity on Saturday, June 29, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Jack Thomas officiating. There will be no visitation.

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Alex Foster, 57, of Phoenix, formerly of Northfork, W.Va., passed away June 12, 2013, in Phoenix of a sudden illness.
Born September 24, 1955, in Welch, he was the son of Patricia A. Foster of Northfork.
Alex graduated from Northfork High School and attended West Virginia Technical College where he studied engineering. Alex was a former employee of the Keystone Mines.
Alex was preceded in death by his great-grandmother Sarah J. Foster; his grandmother, Georgia A. Foster; and his grandfather, William H. Brown.
He is survived by his loving family: his mother, Patricia A. Foster of Northfork; his brothers, David D. (Barbara) Foster, Beckley, Robert L. Foster, Lake Ariel, Pa., William H. (Amelia) Foster, Christiansburg, Va., and Ronald L. Foster, Columbus, Ohio; sisters: Latonia M. (Georgie) Foster, Northfork, Trina L. Foster, Columbus, Ohio, and Toyna A (Eric) Foster-Anderson, Columbus, Ohio; his grandmother, Cora E. Brown of Detroit, Mich., and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends, and a best friend, Rodney Winfree of St. Albans, W.Va.
Services will be 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 29th, 2013, at First Baptist Church Northfork, Northfork, W.Va. Officiating are Rev. Eugene L. Watson, Rev. Walter E. Clay, Rev. Curtis Spencer, and Rev. Harold Calloway, Eulogist.

Rev. James Thomas Mundy Jr.
MOUNT HOPE — Rev. James Thomas Mundy Jr., 77, of Mount Hope, died on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, in Lynchburg, Va.
Born September 10, 1935, at Fayetteville, W.Va., he was the son of the late James Thomas Mundy Sr. and Bernice Eugenia Gentry Mundy.
Rev. Mundy was a retired Baptist minister having pastored for 48 years.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
His wife, Frances Sue Crone Mundy, preceded him in death.
Survivors include four daughters, Kay Ellen Mundy Hornsby and husband, James, of Forest, Va., Penny Jo Mundy Hutchinson and husband, Brian, of Lynchburg, Amy Jane Mundy of Mount Hope and Molly Lynn Mundy Levering and husband, Paul, of Forest, Va.; two sisters, Betty Mundy Burnette of Charleston and Lois Mundy Mahoney of Oak Hill; one brother, Joseph Mundy of Fairhope, Alabama; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be on Sunday, June 30, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Sophia First Baptist Church, 222 First Street, Sophia, W.Va., with Rev. David Sneed and Bob Creed officiating. Burial will be at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill, with military graveside rites by Oak Hill VFW Post #3110.
Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2013, and at the Sophia First Baptist Church, one hour prior to services on Sunday.

Elizabeth (Merze) O’Dell
SMOOT — Elizabeth (Merze) O’Dell of Smoot, formerly of Meadow Bridge, passed away peacefully, at home with family by her side on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, following a long illness.
Born September 3, 1926, on Simms Mountain, Rainelle, she was the daughter of the late Buzz Okey Simms and Esta Wooldridge Simms.
She was a member of Bellwood Baptist Church where she played the piano for several years, and she was a homemaker. Elizabeth enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, fishing, painting, and also working puzzles and reading comics. But her real passion was music, and she was very talented.
Elizabeth could play the organ, mandolin, guitar, but her favorite was the piano, that she enjoyed playing over the years for many local churches.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Edward (Mousey) O’Dell; one brother, Pastor James Simms; two sisters, Martha Simms and infant sister, Leigh Marie Simms.
Left to cherish her memory are: one daughter, Patricia Diane Adkins and husband Roger of Smoot (with whom she made her home); two granddaughters, Crystal Adkins and fiancé John of Backus Mtn, Meadow Bridge, and Christy Hamons and husband Lee of Bellwood; four great-grandchildren, Logan, Ethan, Nicholas, and Sophie Mae; nephews, Ralph Simms and wife, Mary, of Sandstone and Richard Simms and wife, Lois, of Elton.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 29, 2013, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with Pastor Bob Meadows officiating. Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville.

Dr. Paul Reiter
Dr. Paul Reiter, after a long illness, went to be with the Lord Thursday, June 27, 2013. This is by God’s grace according to Scripture, “For by grace are you saved by faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9.
Paul was born November 2, 1929, in Haiti, son of Charles and Helen Reiter. He grew up in The Dalles, Oregon. Paul graduated from Tarkio College and Dallas Theological Seminary, where he earned a Th.M. degree. Later he earned his Ph.D., magna cum laude, from the California Graduate School of Theology.
In 1951 he married Lou Krichbaum. Paul is survived by his beloved wife Lou, daughters Kathy of Pennsylvania, Laura and her husband John of New Zealand, and grandchildren: Chris and Sarah, Deanna and Mike, Julianne, Kim and David.
Paul received Christ as his Savior in February 1949 and was ordained to the ministry in 1956. He served five churches as pastor, and many churches as interim pastor. He was privileged to be on the faculty of Appalachian Bible College for 35 years. He was especially known for teaching the Pauline Epistles and he loved having a part in training men to be pastors. He had great affection for the people of Hilltop Baptist Church and his colleagues and friends at A.B.C.
Burial services will be held privately. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Anderson Chapel at Appalachian Bible College with Pastor Pat Haynes and Dr. Daniel Anderson officiating.

Julian M. ‘Buzzy’ Richmond
HINTON — Julian M. “Buzzy” Richmond, 62, of 616 Greenbrier Avenue, Hinton, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, June 27, 2013, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
Born November 16, 1950, in Hinton, he was the son of the late Julian Q. and Mary Evelyn Thomas Richmond.
Buzzy was a 1968 graduate of Hinton High School, and a 1972 graduate of Concord College. He was a retired school teacher for the Summers County Board of Education with 34 years of service. He was a former basketball coach at Sandstone Junior High School, and coached basketball, track, and football at Hinton High School. He finished his coaching career as the last head football coach at Hinton High School and the first head football coach at Summers County High School. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hinton.
Buzzy, as he was known by family and friends, was known for his zest for life and his great sense of humor. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and brother.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother, James David Richmond.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 40 years, Nancy Harvey Richmond; two daughters, Rochelle Arritt and husband Bob, and their children Elisabeth, Abbie, and Anna Leigh, all of Knoxville, Tenn., and Danielle Bowers and husband Chris, and their children Brinley and Aisley, all of Greensboro N.C. He is also survived by sisters, Nannie Kay Kirk and husband Proctor of Hinton, Peggy Houston and husband Eddie of Huntington, and Sue Vallandingham of San Antonio, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 29th, with Pastor Ronnie Cobb officiating. Burial will follow at Restwood Memorial Gardens in Hinton.
Friends may call from 6 until 9 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Joe Salango, 91, of Beckley, passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House.
Born February 19, 1922, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Vito and Carmina Girarde Salango.
Joe was an electrician and the owner of Salango Electric. He was a 50-year member of Beckley Masonic Lodge #95 A.F. & A.M., member of Scottish Rite, 50-year member and former officer of Beni-Kedem Shrine Temple, Royal Order of Jesters and the Black Knight Country Club. Joe was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Rev. James, Pat, Noah and Tony Salango; sisters, Pauline Severino, Nellie Zopp and Carrie DeLuca.
Survivors include his wife, Judy; sons: Tommy Salango and wife Brenda of Hurricane, W.Va., and Jimmy Salango and wife Tracy of Beckley; daughter, Sandra Martin and husband Jack of Irmo, S.C.; stepson, Ron Wilson and wife JoAnn of Ft. Meade, Md.; stepdaughter, Sue Neal and husband Toby of Ft. Polk, LA; beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Salango has donated his remains to the WVU School of Medicine. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2013, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Paul Bricker officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 10:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday.

Patricia Ann Stone
Patricia Ann Stone, age 65, of Daniels, passed away at her home on Wednesday, June 26, 2013.
Born on September 25, 1947, in Crab Orchard, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Kolonich and Christine Irene Meador Kolonich.
Mrs. Stone was a retired beautician, and was of the Baptist faith. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society, and had lived in Stafford, Va., for most of her adult life. She had lived in Daniels since 2003.
Mrs. Stone was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Joseph Stone.
Surviving are her children, Kimberly Ann Daniel of Moycock, N.C.; Michael Kevin Stone and his wife Robin Denise Stone of Wytheville, Va.; six grandchildren, Brittany, Lindsey, Caleb, Zoey, Kaylee and Savannah. A brother, Bobby Wayne Kolonich and his wife Lynn of Leesburg, Va., and two nephews, Brian and Matthew.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Friday, June 28, 2013, at 2 p.m., with Pastor Larry Cochran officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.
Friends may visit with the family from noon until service time on Friday.
