Elmo Davis

TALCOTT — Elmo Davis, 92, of Talcott passed away Saturday, May 31, 2014, at Main Street Care in Hinton following a short illness.

Born November 29, 1921, at Ballengee, he was a son of the late Lomer A. and Allie Lyons Davis.

Mr. Davis volunteered his service to the Army in early 1942 during WWII. He trained and deployed as an infantryman with the 85th infantry division. He fought with the 85th in Patton’s Campaign in Sicily during the summer of 1943 along with his brother, Thomas, who was assigned to the 3rd infantry division. At the battle of Messina he was severely wounded and eventually evacuated back to the U.S. He was awarded the three signature awards of a WWII warrior for his bravery: the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. His wounds troubled him the remainder of his adult life. He was a truck driver for Shanklin’s Trucking and later purchased his own truck and began hauling miscellaneous goods for local residents and neighbors. Mr. Davis owned and operated Davis Grocery at Ballengee from 1963-1980. He was a member of the Ballengee Farm Club and a trustee of the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Mr. Davis was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas “Verdo” Davis, and three sisters, Winnie McMillion, Ruby Riffe and Lena Clair Hedrick.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Anita Tabor and husband Dean of Marie; stepson, Floyd Light and wife Audra of Leesburg, VA; four step-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; many loved nieces and nephews; special friends, Clifford “Bud” Brandstetter of Danese, David Frazier of Ballengee and many other friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Sam Haught officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery at Ballengee. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of services Tuesday at the funeral parlors.

Matthew, Robbie and Eric Tabor, Patrick Harris, J.D. Tilghman, Jeff and Jimmy Frazier and Ronnie Brandstetter will serve as pallbearers.

Merle S. Ford

In the early evening of Saturday, May 31, 2014, Merle S. Ford, age 95, of Beaver, WV, was taken into Heaven.

She was born on March 20, 1919, at Grandview, WV, to the late Arthur and Ocie Peters Carper of Grandview, WV.

Mrs. Ford was also preceded in death by three brothers, Vincent, Jack, and Roy Carper.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Ford is survived by her husband Burl Ford, in which they were married 74 years. He along with her three children were her caregivers for the past 10 years. She will be sadly missed by her children, Darrell, Della, and Darla.

Mrs. Ford was a member of the Beaver Baptist Church, where she also sang in the church choir.

Those left to remember her are her children, Darrell Ford and his wife Nancy of Beaver, Della Wriston and her husband Roger of Lewisburg, and Darla Whitehair and her husband Ron of Beckley.

Grandchildren, Avery Taylor, Bryan Wriston, David Ford, and Rhonda Bennett.

Great-grandchildren, Brady and Coalton Taylor, Chase and Ian Bennett.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to Becky Harmon for the Love and Great care given to our mom in the last year. Special thanks go to Dr. Richard Whisman and his nurse Blue.

Funeral Services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Paul Holstein officiating. Burial will follow at the Grandview Cemetery at Grandview, WV. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Avery Taylor, Bryan Wriston, David Ford, Glenville Redden, Bill Richmond, and Phillip Maltempie.

MOUNT HOPE — Franklin Delano Jacks, 78, of Mount Hope, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014.

In honoring Mr. Jacks’ wishes he will be cremated and a committal service will be at a later date at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Dr. Carl Larson

MAPLE FORK — Dr. Carl Larson, 65, of Maple Fork, passed away Friday, May 30, 2014.

Born November 16, 1948, in San Jose, CA, he was the son of the late Hartman and Elsie Wahrgren Larson.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his daughter, Emma Alexandra Larson, in 2005.

Dr. Larson grew up in Everett, WA, and graduated from Everett High School. He graduated from Pacific Lutheran University and Loyola University Medical School where he served his residency. He moved to Beckley in 1980 working at the Southern West Virginia Clinic. He later became one of the founders of Raleigh Regional Cancer Center. He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church.

Dr. Larson is survived by his wife, Jeanne Wriston Larson; daughter, Krista Larson Morris and husband Matthew of Beckley; son, Timothy William Larson of Columbus, OH; stepdaughters, Kacey Hess and husband Isaac of Beckley and Mallory Proctor of Prosperity; sister, Carolee Shevlin and husband John of Palm Springs, CA; grandchildren, Maddox and Everly Morris, Hayden and Lincoln Proctor, Hadley Hess; nieces, Rosemary and Nancy Shevlin; great-niece Mia and other extended family.

Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at the United Methodist Temple, 201 Templeview Drive, Beckley. A private family service will be held on Wednesday, June 3, 2014.

CALDWELL — George Allen Loudermilk, 78, of Caldwell died May 30, 2014.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

FREDERICK, Md. — Betty Stover, 83, of Frederick, Md., formerly of Daniels, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014.

Rebecca Lynn Tabaka

NORTH PALM BEACH, Fla. — Rebecca Lynn Tabaka, 59, of North Palm Beach, FL, formerly of Beckley, WV, passed away on Friday, May 30, 2014, after a brave struggle with ALS.

Becky treasured every moment she could spend with her family and friends. Her passion for cooking led to a career as a restaurateur, caterer, and a private chef. She appreciated all the love and support that she received during her illness from her family, friends, and coworkers.

Becky was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia Gagne; father, Chester Clyburn; and stepmother, Sylvia Clyburn.

She is survived by her loving husband, Phillip Tabaka; son, Aaron Denny (Yvonne); grandchildren, Mary Lynn and Alexandria Ann; sister, Debbie Bobek (Thomas); niece, Jami Harrell; nephew, Donnie Ledger.

Vernie A. ‘Buddy’ Whitt

Vernie A. “Buddy” Whitt, 75, of Beckley, formerly of Charleston, passed away Saturday, May 31, 2014.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, at the Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Charles Gilbert officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity. Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, at the funeral home.
