Jacqueline Rose Akers

Jacqueline “Jackie” Rose Akers, 85, of Ameagle, passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer’s on Saturday, December 15, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House surrounded by her family.

Jackie was born October 15, 1927, in Crites, WV, and was the daughter of the late Clifford Earl and Ethel Odessa White.

She is also preceded in death by her husband Roy David Akers, and three brothers: Lonnie, Lee, and Billy White.

Jackie grew up in the coalfields of WV and her first job was at the Company Store in Ameagle. She also worked for the power company in Whitesville, WV. In 1950, she married her high school sweetheart of 8 years and began her family. She later earned her teaching degree from Morris Harvey and began her teaching career for Raleigh County Schools. She taught first grade at Clear Fork Elementary for over 30 years and retired in 1992. Jackie was known for her feisty, strong-willed personality and showed this even in her last days. She attended Beckley Church of God.

She is survived by a brother, James White and wife Ellie of Pipestem, WV; a daughter, Denna Persinger and husband Randy of Ameagle; a son Michael Akers and wife Barbara of Beckley; five granddaughters, April Cantley of Beaver, Jada Bradley of Beckley, Shaela Persinger of Ameagle, Sarah and Mikayla Akers of Beckley; and four great-grandchildren, Jacob and Kaylee Bradley of Beckley, and Audrey and Dana Cantley of Beaver.

Services will be Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 1 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home in Whitesville, with Bishop Danny Bennett officiating. Friends may visit one hour prior to service. Burial will follow at Estep Cemetery in Ameagle.

The family wishes to express gratitude to Pine Lodge Nursing Home and Bowers Hospice House for the dedication and kindness the nurses and staff provided while she was under their care.



Louis Angius Jr.

MOUNT HOPE — Our loving daddy, Louis Angius Jr., 78, of Mount Hope, died on Saturday, December 15, 2012, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born July 6, 1934, at Tamroy, W.Va., he was the son of the late Louis Angius Sr. and Quinta Nenni Angius.

Mr. Angius was a a retired coal miner having worked for the New River Coal Company.

He was a member of the Mount Hope First Church of God and the UMWA. He loved to hunt and fish.

His former wife, Patricia Gay Angius, preceded him in death on July 10, 2001. He was also preceded by a daughter, Teresa Dawn Angius, and a brother, John Angius.

He is survived by a loving family which include one son, Steve Angius and wife, Wanda, of Fayetteville; four daughters, Joyce Wriston of Beckley and Lesia Higginbotham and husband, Richard, of Glen Jean, Tammy Hancock and husband, Mel, of Beckley and Angela Angius of Mount Hope; three brothers, Frank Angius of Sissonville, Sam Angius of Sissonville and Jack Angius of Fayetteville, and six sisters, Tracy Sykes of Atlanta, Ga., Ellen McCoy of Charleston, Rose Hayes of Radford, Va., Mary Webb of Milton, Patty Wooten of Oak Hill and Josie Wriston of Fayetteville.

He is also survived by nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home, in Mount Hope, with Pastor Bryan Knight officiating. Entombment will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Ricky Higginbotham, Jason Higginbotham, Steven Angius, Mel Hancock, Jeremy Wriston, Sam Spadaro and Matt Wriston will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.

Juanita Farley Cook

HOLLY HILLS — Juanita Farley Cook, 73, of Holly Hills, formerly of Oceana, passed away Saturday, Dec. 16, 2012.

Funeral services will be at noon Thursday, Dec. 20, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, with Pastor Roland Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

John Swinfield Jones Jr.

DINGESS — John Swinfield Jones Jr., 90, passed away Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, at the House of Prayer at Dingess, with the Rev. Roy Messer Jr. and James Spaulding officiating. Burial will follow in the Jones Community Cemetery at Dingess. Friends may call beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Robert Lewis Kershner

Robert Lewis Kershner, 61, of Cranberry, passed away Sunday, December 16, 2012, after a courageous four-year battle with cancer.

Born July 26, 1951, Robert was a son of the late Harold and Mary Kincaid Kershner.

Robert enjoyed fishing and driving his Corvette. He was employed as a diesel mechanic with Vecillio and Grogan. Robert was of the Baptist faith and served his country proudly in the U.S. Army.

In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Kershner; and brother, William Kershner.

Those left to cherish his memory include sister, Martha Branham and husband Jimmy of Knoxville, Tenn.; brother, James Kershner and wife Elaine of Covington, Va.; aunt, Ruth Kincaid of Beckley; nieces and nephews, Debbi Richmond of Harrisonburg, Va., Khristi Detwiler of Harrisonburg, Va., Jimmy Kershner of Covington, Va., David Branham of Illinois, Mary Katherine Branham of Tennessee, Mark Kershner of Michigan, Matt Kershner of Ohio; many cousins, extended family and friends.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the doctors and staff at the Raleigh Regional Cancer Center.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Michael Knotts officiating. Following the services Robert will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Friends may gather with the family Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

ACCOVILLE — Rev. Denver “Den” McClellan Jr., 67, a native of Lundale, passed away Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012.

 A celebration of life and resurrection will be at noon Thursday, Dec. 20, at the Becco United Baptist Church at Amherstdale. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens at Godby. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the church and one hour prior to services.

Robert Dean ‘Bob’ Merritt

Robert Dean “Bob” Merritt, age 54, of Beckley, passed away on Sunday, December 16, 2012, at the Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., following a short illness.

Born on January 16, 1958, in Dayton, Ohio, he was the son of Frank Burnside Merritt of Bernie, Missouri, and Helen Joyce Bennett Merritt of Beckley.

Mr. Merritt was a self-employed carpenter, and had been a Beckley resident since 2001. He enjoyed fishing, building things, and spending time with his family. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Mr. Merritt was preceded in death by his grandmother, Bessie Bennett.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife of 28 years, Iris Wooddell; two children, Angeline Rene Goodman and her husband David of Hampton, Va., Anthony Robert Merritt (and JoJo Merritt) of Newport News, Va.; two stepchildren, Carol Hockensmith of Springfield, Va., and Tammy Marie Long and her husband Christopher Long of Springfield, Va.; five grandchildren, Chloe, Dakota, Morgan, Stevie, and Tanner; a sister, Joy Merritt of Falls Church, Va.; a niece, Chelsea Weaver of Hershey, Pa.

A Memorial Service will be held to Celebrate The Life Of Robert Dean Merritt on Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley.

Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services Wednesday.

HOLLYWOOD — Rosie Elmore Wickline, 91, of Hollywood, passed away Monday, Dec. 17, 2012.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, at the Groves Funeral Home in Union, with the Revs. Mark and Marva Smearman officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery at Keenan. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ruth Ann Woods

BESOCO — Ruth Ann Woods, 52, of Besoco, passed away Saturday, December 15, 2012, at the Brain Center in Fincastle, Va., following a long illness.

Born June 1, 1960, at Besoco, she was the daughter of the late James Okie (Jake) Woods and Edris Cook Woods.

She was a lifelong member of the Besoco Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her two brothers and three sisters.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son James Howard Woods at home, a sister Sally Woods at Besoco, her friend Michael Foley of Raleigh, W.Va., and three brothers Jake Woods and companion Lori Broome of Vale, N.C., Billy Woods and companion Carolyn, Joseph and wife Ella Woods, both of Chapmanville, W.Va., with numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at the Melton Mortuary Chapel, located at 1200 Harper Road, Beckley, with Pastor Dan Coalson officiating. Burial will follow at the family cemetery at Meade, W.Va.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers, James Howard Woods, Billy R. Woods, Joseph Woods, Billy J. Woods, Andrew England, Michael Foley, Jake Woods.

Friends may gather one hour prior to funeral services with the family.
