Jacqueline Rose Akers

Jacqueline “Jackie” Rose Akers, 85, of Ameagle, passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer’s on Saturday, December 15, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House surrounded by her family.

Jackie was born October 15, 1927, in Crites, WV, and was the daughter of the late Clifford Earl and Ethel Odessa White.

She is also preceded in death by her husband Roy David Akers, and three brothers: Lonnie, Lee, and Billy White.

Jackie grew up in the coalfields of WV and her first job was at the Company Store in Ameagle. She also worked for the power company in Whitesville, WV. In 1950, she married her high school sweetheart of 8 years and began her family. She later earned her teaching degree from Morris Harvey and began her teaching career for Raleigh County Schools. She taught first grade at Clear Fork Elementary for over 30 years and retired in 1992. Jackie was known for her feisty, strong-willed personality and showed this even in her last days. She attended Beckley Church of God.

She is survived by a brother, James White and wife Ellie of Pipestem, WV; a daughter, Denna Persinger and husband Randy of Ameagle; a son Michael Akers and wife Barbara of Beckley; five granddaughters, April Cantley of Beaver, Jada Bradley of Beckley, Shaela Persinger of Ameagle, Sarah and Mikayla Akers of Beckley; and four great-grandchildren, Jacob and Kaylee Bradley of Beckley, and Audrey and Dana Cantley of Beaver.

Services will be Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 1 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home in Whitesville, with Bishop Danny Bennett officiating. Friends may visit one hour prior to service. Burial will follow at Estep Cemetery in Ameagle.

The family wishes to express gratitude to Pine Lodge Nursing Home and Bowers Hospice House for the dedication and kindness the nurses and staff provided while she was under their care.
