Olivene Marion Bennett

VICTOR — Olivene Marion Bennett of Lucas Road, Victor, beloved mother and grandmother, went to be with the Lord following a long illness on Wednesday, March 10, 2010.

Born March 29, 1934, in Lookout, W.Va., she was preceded in death by her husband, Burton Bennett; her son, David Charles “Pickett” Bennett; her father, William Bennett; her mother, Mabel Bennett; her stepmother, Dicie Bennett; her sister, Betty Colter; and her son-in-law, Cecil Smith.

Olivene was a member of Mt. Eary Methodist Church, Ramsey.

Those left to cherish her memory are son and wife, Keith and Cindy Bennett of Hico; son and wife, Michael and Terri Bennett of Mt. Nebo; daughter, Pam Smith of Victor; son and wife, Floyd “Abe” and Barbara Bennett of Victor; son and wife, Doug and Pat Bennett of Victor; son, B.J. Bennett of Victor; brother and wife, John and Mary Bennett of Pool; brother and wife, Gary and Louise Bennett of Augusta, Ga.; sister and husband, Sandra and Jimmy Hammond of Wharton; brother, Albert Bennett of Beckley; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Olivene will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Friends may say their goodbyes and pay their respects between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ansted. Funeral services will follow visitation at 8 p.m. with Pastor Bill Kincaid officiating.

Burial services will be held at Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville, Sunday, March 14, at 12:30 p.m.

James Edgar ‘Ed’ Boothe

PETERSTOWN — James Edgar “Ed” Boothe, 96, of Peterstown, passed away Thursday, March 11, 2010, at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital, Pearisburg, Va., with his daughters by his side.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 13, at the Appalachian Christian Center with Pastor Michael Biggs officiating. Burial will follow in the Peterstown Cemetery, Rich Creek, Va. Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the church.

Sylvester Bryant

OMAR — Sylvester Bryant, 72, died Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at Logan Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Bryant will be cremated, and no services are scheduled at this time.

John Howard Erwin

CARMEL, Ind. — John Howard Erwin, age 84, passed to his heavenly home on March 10, 2010. He was surrounded by his family in his home as he had always wished. Born on September 19, 1925, in Powellton, W.Va., he was the son of Walter Scott Erwin and Floda Mae (Casto) Erwin.

He married Icie (Cantley) Erwin on November 27, 1948, in Greenup, Ky. He worked for International Harvester for 30 years before retiring. Mr. Erwin was a member of UAW, an avid Colts fan and loved fishing.

Surviving him are his wife, Icie (Cantley) Erwin of Carmel; children, Anita (Wayne) Adkins of Carmel, Dewey (Karla) Erwin of Indianapolis, Deborah (Carl) Lau of Carmel, and Roger (Faire Elizabeth) Erwin of Greenwood, Ind.; brother, Keenan Erwin of Naoma; sister, Edna (Stan) Papciak of Tonowanda, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey and Ryan Adkins, Christina Manship, Linda Schnaedter, Jennifer Wolfe, Bryan Chandler, Nathan Erwin; nine great-grandchildren, Felicia, Emilia, Eleanor, Stephen, Savannah, Lily, Kaitlyn, Natalie, and Bethany; two stepgrandchildren, Carleen Coy and Alex Lau; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, A.J. and Wyatt Coy.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Walter and Floda Mae Erwin; sisters, Colleen Sturgill and Ollie Mae Cook; and brothers, Walter June Erwin, Wiley Erwin and Harvey Erwin.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, Friday, March 12, 2010, at Erlewein Mortuary, 1484 West U.S. 40 (Corner of 150 W. and U.S. 40), in Greenfield, Ind. Funeral services will be on Saturday, March 13, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the mortuary. Pastor Jonathan Manship will be officiating. Burial will follow at Asbury Cemetery in Morristown, Ind. There will be a meal served for family and friends at Erlewein Mortuary following the burial service.

John Leland Fairlie

John Leland Fairlie, age 71, of Beckley, died Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at the Charleston Area Medical Center Memorial Division.

Born on April 24, 1938, in Athens, Pa., Mr. Fairlie was the son of the late John and Gertrude Howe Fairlie.

Mr. Fairlie was a 20-year mine engineer, and retired as a real estate agent for Century 21 in 2001. He was a member of the Beckley Presbyterian Church, and was a 32nd Degree Mason with the AF&AM Lodge Number 138 in Pineville, W.Va. John enjoyed gardening, reading, square and round dancing, being with his family, traveling, and attending the new senior center in Beckley.

Mr. Fairlie was a graduate of the Athens High School in Pennsylvania and held a B.S. Degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He was employed by Eastern Associated Coal Corp. for 20 years as a mining engineer at Kopperston and Stotesbury.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lois Fairlie.

Survivors include his loving wife Marcia Ray Fairlie of 50 years; three sons, Michael and his wife Rene of Jacksonville, N.C., Stephen and his wife Lynne of Monroe, N.C., and David and his wife Virginia of Reston, Va. A granddaughter, Christina Fairlie Knight and her husband Ryan of San Jose, Calif.; a nephew, Eric Nute of Sacramento, Calif., and his family, as well as an aunt, Barbara Fairlie of Barton, N.Y., and various cousins.

Funeral services will be 12 noon Saturday, March 13, 2010, at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, with The Rev. Dr. William A. dePrater officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time on Saturday.

Members of the Masonic Lodge will serve as pallbearers and conduct Masonic graveside rites.

Amy Diane Farley

Amy Diane Farley, 29, of Blue Jay, passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a sudden illness.

Born June 2, 1980, in Beckley, she was the daughter of David Ray Farley of Daniels and Brenda Kay Sobeski Lowry of Mooresville, N.C.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents James Sobeski of Burr Oak, Mich., and Doris J. Sobeski of Shady Spring.

Amy attended Shady Spring High School, she loved spending time with her friends and family, listening to music, cheering for the WVU football team, she loved life to the fullest in her own way, she loved the holidays and had an infectious smile and an amazing laugh.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Noah R. Allen Farley at home, daughter, Ashley L. Mills of Daniels, her father, David R. Farley and wife Nereida of Daniels, her mother, Brenda Kay Lowry and husband Steve of Mooresville, paternal grandparents, Ivan and Mary Ann Farley of Daniels, a sister, Kylie P. Sarrett of Coal City, a brother, Kaleb L. Sarrett of Mooresville, uncles, Ivan Farley and wife Wendy of Huntington, W.Va., Wayne Farley of Daniels, Mickey Sobeski and wife Debbie of Spartanburg, S.C., nephews, Mickey and Stephen Farley of Huntington, Michael A. and Andrew C. Sobeski of Spartanburg, and her friend Rodney R. Allen of Blue Jay. Amy will be sadly missed by all her family, extended family and friends.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring, with Shannon Blosser officiating. Rhonda Lynne Gilkerson, 39, of Bradley, died Thursday, March 11, 2010, at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Caravel Alvin Goard Sr.

SCARBRO — Caravel Alvin Goard Sr., 70, of 292 Orchard Row Road, Scarbro, died Monday, March 8, 2010, at 1:06 p.m. in Raleigh General Hospital after a short illness.

Born September 6, 1939, in Page, W.Va., he was the son of the late Reuben B. Goard and Cecilia Kimbro Goard.

Mr. Goard was a linesman for Appalachian Power Company and was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Greentown.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Reuben L. Goard.

Those left to cherish precious memories are: wife, Darlene Swafford Goard; sons, Caravel D. Goard of Parkersburg, W.Va., William Swafford and Jonathan Swafford, both of Scarbro, Jeff (Ceateetra) Goard and Tyrone Goard, both of Charleston, W.Va.; stepsons, Leland D. Hayes Layton Hamrick

SPRATTSVILLE — Hayes Layton Hamrick, 71, of Sprattsville, departed this life on Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at Logan Regional Medical Center, from complications arising from diabetes.

Born at Oceana on August 15, 1938, he was the son of the late Hayes Lundy and Viola Mae Hamrick.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Larry Curtis Hamrick.

Layton retired from International Industries where he served as a Chief Forester for many years under the employ of close friend James H. (Buck) Harless.

Those left to love and cherish his memory are: his two sisters, Patricia (Bill) Goad of Barboursville and Anita Merritt of Sprattsville; his brother, Terry (Merlene) Hamrick of Justice; a special nephew, Todd Hamrick of Sprattsville; his sister-in-law, Judy Hamrick of Williamson; a loving caregiver, Bobby Rollyson, and a host of other dear family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, March 13th, from 6 to 9 p.m., conducted by Conley Goad.

Katy Evelyn Leake

ANSTED — Katy Evelyn Leake, 84, of Ansted, passed away Thursday, March 11, 2010, at the Ansted Center Nursing Home after an extended illness.

Born at Leander, W.Va., on May 24, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Ortie and Alma Legg Crookshanks. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Leake, and brother, William Crookshanks.

She was a member of the Ansted Baptist Church where she was a former Sunday School teacher. She was a cook at the Ansted Center for 17 years. She was a lifetime member of the Pythian Sisters.

Those left to cherish her memory are son Joe and wife Linda Leake of Ansted; granddaughters, Christy and husband Brian Beaver of Ansted and Leslie and husband Stewart Beebe of Lookout; great-grandchildren, BJ Beaver, Austin Beaver, Lane Eades, Allison Eades, Haley Boley, Josh Beebe, and Sarah Beebe; and one sister, Mildred Deligne of Ansted.

Tommy P. Persinger

YPSILANTI, Mich. — Tommy P. Persinger, age 66, passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at University Hospitals.

He was born October 3, 1943, in Crab Orchard, W.Va., the son of Homer D. and Raphel (Rice) Persinger Sr.

On August 25, 1998, he married Glenda Lawson in Las Vegas, Nev., and she preceded him in death October 7, 2007.

He retired from General Motors. Tommy was a member of U.A.W. Local #735, the United Mine Workers in Beckley, and Community Free Will Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing, camping, black jack and slots.

Survivors include: two daughters, Beverly (Jack) Massoni of New Fairfield, Conn., and Racheal Persinger of Martinsburg, W.Va.; four stepchildren, Vonda Davidson, Victoria Pelphrey, Sandra Jones and Shannon (Earnest) Fry; grandchildren, Gia and Ava Massoni; five brothers, Jackie, Bobby, Charlie, Eddie Dean and Paul; two sisters, Raphel Judith O’Mera and Sherry Gray; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter, Sammatha Persinger, and three brothers, Freddie, Dallas, and Homer Jr.

The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Community Free Will Baptist Church, 6945 McKean Road, Ypsilanti, with Rev. Don Viers officiating. Burial will follow in Union-Udell Cemetery. The family received friends at Stark Funeral Service 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, and may also call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. today (Friday) at the funeral home, and at the church from 9 a.m. until time of service Saturday.

Vernon L. ‘Red Fox’ Richmond

MEADOW CREEK — Vernon L. “Red Fox” Richmond, 56, of Meadow Creek, went home to be with the Lord Monday, March 8, 2010, at his home following an apparent heart attack.

Born May 27, 1953, at Claypool, he was a son of the late Erville and Dorothy Marie Runyan Richmond. Vernon was of the Baptist faith, he retired from CSX Corp. where he worked on the Maintenance of Way Dept. at Rainelle, enjoyed talking on his CB radio, watching stock car racing, avid mountaineer fan and he loved the outdoors especially hunting and fishing.

Preceded in death by two sisters, Reva Gail Richmond Goodson and Linda Bragg.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 37 years, Bonnie Bragg Richmond of Meadow Creek; one son, Tracy Richmond and wife Mistie of Meadow Bridge; one daughter, Amy Lambert and husband David of Rainelle; four grandchildren, Alivia Lambert, Dustin, Peyton and Caleb Richmond; one brother, Dover Richmond and wife Dreama of Flint, Mich.; one sister, Clara Richmond of Meadow Bridge; special uncle, Robert Plumley of Abraham; and several nieces and nephews.

Emery Darius Salisbury

HILL TOP — Emery Darius Salisbury, 84, of Hill Top, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at his home after a short illness.

Born May 31, 1925, in Clay County, he was the son of the late Orville and Dora (Rhodes) Salisbury.

Mr. Salisbury was a retired coal miner from Allied Chemical Company at the Harewood Operation. He worked 41 years, and he was an electrician and head trouble shooter. He always enjoyed working; he enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing his harmonica, gardening, and telling stories from days past. Mr. Salisbury was a certified watch repairman from the school of Illinois.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Angela Cherice Gwinn; two sons, Emery Darius Salisbury Jr., in 1948, Darrell Wayne Salisbury, in 1981; his loving wife of 56 years Wanda Green Salisbury in 2002; one son-in-law, Thomas Stanton Gwinn, in 2008; four sisters, Delphia Graham, Locella Knight, Erma Lewis, Geneva Salisbury; two brothers, Alvie Salisbury, Glen Salisbury.

Those left to cherish his memory include four daughters, Patricia Mason and husband, Mike, Sherry Pauley and husband, Stuart, Brenda Pyatt and husband, Melvin, and Deanna Salisbury; six grandchildren, Brian Mason, Debbie Mason Lucas, Thomas Gwinn Jr., Renee Kesterson Klein, Larry Allen Kesterson II, and Rodney Salisbury; seven great-grandchildren, Nash Gwinn, Reed Gwinn, Garrett Kesterson, Grayson Kesterson, Darius Klein, Joel Klein, Kaitlyn Salisbury.

Mr. Salisbury attended the Sprague Free Will Baptist Church.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Fred Lovell and Rev. Joe Cuthbertson officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Peggy Ellen Sesco

Peggy Ellen Sesco, 66, of Beckley, died Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at her residence following a long illness.

Born April 26, 1943, at Welch, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Annie Blankenship Massey.

Peggy was a homemaker and a 40-year member of Amigo Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her first husband, Burley “Buddy” Hayworth; a daughter, Zelma “Tootsie” Linthicum; and two brothers, John and Frank Massey.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband, James Sesco of Beckley; two daughters, Linda Griffith and her husband, Michael, of Mullens and Elaine Massey of Maben; one son, Blaine Hayworth and his fiancée, Jessica Reeves, of Mullens. She was also the proud stepmother of Regina and John Porter of Camp Creek, Lois and Randall Tolliver of Beckley, Brenda and Jerry Willingham of Beckley, Sharon and David Howard of Georgetown, Ky., Randall and Dawn Sesco of Alpoca, Linda and Ernie Holt of Nicholaville, Ky., and Granville and Shelley Sesco of Mullens. She is also survived by three granddaughters, Katie and Sarah Hardy of Mullens, and Josey Linthicum of Baltimore, Md., a great-grandson who was her sunshine, Tristen Cole Hart of Mullens, and the proud grandmother of several stepgrandchildren; two sisters, Ellen Maraschello of Maryland, and Edna Kmet and her husband, Emil, of Arizona; two sisters-in-law, Betty Massey of Pierpoint and Charlotte Massey of Crab Orchard, and three brothers, Jessie Massey and his wife, Jerry, of Beckley, Gillis Massey and his wife, Bodie, of Pierpoint, and James “Jimmy Dale” Daniels of Maben.

Timothy Samuel Stone

DELLSLOW — Timothy Samuel Stone, 42, of Dellslow, died Saturday, March 6, 2010, at his residence.

Born July 13, 1967, at Bluefield, he is the son of Phillip Samuel Stone Jr. of Princeton and the late Vickie Louise Perdue Stone.

Tim was a graduate of Shady Spring High School and received his bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University. Tim had spent most of his time working in the hospitality industry. He recently developed a passion for golf, was an avid WVU sports fan, liked to grow vegetables, enjoyed going to the beach, very giving, and had a great love affair with his dog Snoopy. Tim remained in Morgantown after graduation and will be sadly missed by the multitudes of friends he has made.

Survivors include his father, Phillip Samuel Stone of Princeton; a sister, Leah D. Dawson and husband Brad of Flatwoods, Ky., and a nephew, Nicholas Allen Dawson, and niece, Lauren Dawson; Aunt and Uncle Kathy and Fred Stepp and their children, Kristin and Megan; Uncle Glen Stone and his wife Connie of Monroe, N.C., and their son, Glen Stone, Jr., of Alexandria, Va.; a very special relative and friend, Jean Sinicrope of Princeton. And close friends, Kelly Kernes, Wanda Maury, Brent Thompson, Mark Burgess, Mark Ellenbogan, Brad Hunt, and Matt McLaughlin.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010, from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Bobby Sylvia speaking. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 until 8 p.m. today (Friday) at the funeral home.

Patricia Ruth Stover

PIERPOINT — Patricia Ruth Stover, age 73, of Pierpoint in Wyoming County, died Sunday, February 28, 2010, at Raleigh General Hospital after a prolonged illness.

Born February 25, 1937, in Pierpoint, she was the daughter of the late Robert Less McGrady and the late Willie Wood McGrady.

In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband of 32 years and high school sweet heart David Jennings Stover.

Mrs. Stover was voted most likely to succeed by the Mullens High School class of 1954 and decided to spend her life as a home maker for her husband, two sons, two grandsons and many others who practiced their reading skills sitting on her lap. After the death of her husband she worked in house keeping at Twin Falls State Park.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, David “Bugs” Stover of Pierpoint, Michael J. Stover and wife April of Pierpoint; her brothers, Jim McGrady of Hans Creek, Monroe County and Jerry McGrady of Mullens; her sister, Mary Lord of Cool Ridge, sister-in-law Carol McCoy Harless and husband Bill of Kentucky, and grandsons, Justin N. Stover and wife Amber of Morgantown W.Va., and Austin Stover of Pierpoint; and nieces and nephews Sara, Steve, John, Jerry, Rusty, and Eric.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 14, 2010, at the Cabin Creek Primitive Baptist Church on the hill in Pierpoint, with brother Elder Jerry McGrady officiating. Friends may gather one hour before the service and are invited to stay for dinner afterward.
