Nancy Gail Campbell

SCARBRO — Nancy Gail Campbell, born in Oak Hill on Sept. 3, 1970, passed away at her home in Scarbro on Friday, March 5, 2010. Nancy has now joined her parents, Ballard Bryant and Daisy Richmond Bryant, both of whom preceded her in death.

Nancy has left her husband, Charlie Campbell, whose love and devotion has been boundless. Nancy is also survived by her siblings, David Bryant, Wayne Bryant, Angela Humphrey, Alisa Fitzwater and Cathleen Bryant, along with a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and friends.

All of the people whose lives were touched by Nancy will forever cherish her memory.

Her remains rest at the High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main St., Oak Hill, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, and where the funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Lum Toney officiating. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

SINKS GROVE — Pfc. James C. Crawford, 20, died Friday, March 5, 2010.

Mary Moye Dorsey, 82, of Ghent, passed away Monday, March 8, 2010, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Pamela Evans

MULLENSVILLE — Pamela Evans, 53, of Mullensville, received her wings on Saturday, March 6, 2010, at her home.

Born Oct. 27, 1956, in McDowell County, she was the daughter of Tommy and Lois Taylor Cleary.

Pamela fought the good fight.

She was preceded in death by loving family members, Roger D. Evans, R. Danny Evans, Robert Spears, Paulette Steele and her grandparents.

In addition to her parents, survivors include her loving husband of 39 years, Stacy Evans; the joy of her life, her daughter, Bridget Ann Walker and her husband, Barry; her reason for fighting to live, her grandchildren, Ivy Briann and new baby to be, Walker; her animals that she loved dearly, Buddy, Sammie, Little Girl and Katie; brother and sisters, Ginger Mills and her husband, Ray, Kathy Romeo and her husband, Angelo, Genette Finney and her husband, David, Zac Cleary and his wife, Tammy, and Trella Coppola and her husband, Augie; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Pamela’s life will be 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at the funeral home.

Brenda J. Spain Hancock

“To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord”

Brenda Spain Hancock, formerly of Beckley, born May 1, 1951, passed away quietly March 6, 2010, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va. Family and friends were at her bedside for the final goodbye.

Brenda was a kind person who loved family, reading, and good soul music. She was a 1970 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, attended Fairmont State College, and worked in retail sales for over 20 years, mostly at J.C. Penney.

Brenda was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hancock; father, Anderson Spain; uncles, James and Charles Spain, and grandparents, Essex and Leola Spain, who raised her.

Left to cherish her memory are: sons, Michael and Essex “Chris” Spain of Beckley; daughter, Azure Spain of Beckley; sister, Diane (Raymond) Cook of Beckley; aunt, Francis Spain of Nashville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Kadijah, Chanté, Isabella, Michael Jr., and special friend, Anthony Harbison: other family and friends.

Funeral services will be 12 noon Thursday, March 11, 2010, at the Ritchie & Johnson Funeral Parlor Chapel, 748 S. Fayette Street, Beckley, with Elder Ricardo Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Lydia Ellen Harless

ST. ALBANS — Lydia Ellen Harless, formerly of the Jarrolds Valley section of Whitesville, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Braley Care Home, St. Albans, after a long illness.

She was born April 25, 1925, at Ameagle, W.Va., a daughter of the late George and Alice Buzzard Jarrell.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Clyde Raymond Harless; five sisters, Ruby Cumberledge, Ola Jarrell, Ina Satterfield, Golda Dotson, Ida Jarrell; two brothers, Guy and Claude Jarrell; one granddaughter, Ginger Michelle Harless.

She is survived by a son, Robert “Bobby” Harless and wife, Lisa, of South Charleston; one sister, Chloe Peterson of Colorado; three grandchildren, Tara Marie West of Greenville, Ky., Heather Harless of Nortonville, Ky., and Raymond “BJ” Harless of South Charleston; great-grandchildren, Blake, McKenzie, Jared, Derek, Maverick, Jordan.

The family would like to offer a special thanks to both staffs of Hospice and Braley Care Home for all their care.

Services will be 12 noon Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. Cecil McClellan officiating. Singer will be Brother Forrest Ramsey. Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery, Orgas.

William Earl Harvey

CLINTONVILLE — William Earl Harvey, 80, passed away Monday, March 8, 2010.

Service will be 3 p.m. Friday, March 12, at West Point Baptist Church, Asbury, with the Rev. Ron Miller officiating. Friends may call 2 to 3 p.m. Friday at the West Point Baptist Church.

Patty Lee Henson

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Patty Lee Henson, 73, passed away Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center.

Born November 24, 1936, in Weston, she was the daughter of the late James M. and Madeline B. Gillespie. Patty lived her entire life in White Sulphur Springs. She enjoyed arts and crafts, painting, car shows, and loved traveling, which included many trips to her favorite spot, Gatlinburg, Tenn. She was the owner of the Looking Glass Beauty Salon in White Sulphur Springs from 1968 to 1974. She retired from The Greenbrier Clinic after 38 years and continued to enjoy all the things in life she loved.

Survivors include her husband of 20 years, Herschel Henson; children, Richard Haveron of Coalton, W.Va., Melinda Jones of White Sulphur Springs, Buddy Anderson of Charlotte, N.C., Mark Henson of White Sulphur Springs, and Barbara Hughes of Hollywood, W.Va.; grandchildren, Melissa and Amy Haveron, Jessica Simms, Trista Jones, Kelsey Jones, Jimmy Anderson, Emily and Genna Anderson, Cassandra McClung, Timothy and Abigail Hughes; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, White Sulphur Springs, with Rev. Brent Sturm, O.S.L., officiating. Burial will follow at the Mapledale Cemetery, Rt. 92, White Sulphur Springs. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, at the funeral home.

Harvey Lee Kincaid

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Harvey Lee Kincaid, 60, of White Sulphur Springs died on Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center following an extended illness.

Born on July 16, 1949, at Alvon, he was a son of the late J. Harvey and Reta Evelyn Wade Kincaid.

Harvey was of the Methodist faith. He worked at the former Hercules Plant at Covington and retired after 32 years service as a Correctional Officer at Anthony Creek Correctional Facility at Neola. Harvey loved the outdoor life, especially enjoying hunting and farming.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a nephew and several aunts and uncles.

Survivors include a son, Matthew (Mandy) Kincaid of Alvon; five sisters, Gladys Childers, Charlotte E. Kincaid, Ethel (Stephen) Fogus of White Sulphur Springs, Genevieve (Brooks) Groves of Canvas, W.Va., and Linda (William) Bartlett of Lewisburg; three granddaughters, Emma, Joely, and Gracie; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at Mapledale Cemetery with the Rev. Lowell O’Dell and Wes Balshor officiating.

The family received friends from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Monday evening, March 7, 2010, at the funeral home.

Wanda Richmond Mays

Wanda Richmond Mays, 84, of Old Eccles Road died at the Bowers Hospice on Monday, March 8, 2010, following a short illness.

Charles McClanahan

CLEARFORK — Charles McClanahan, 77, departed this life Saturday, March 6, 2010, at CAMC following a short illness.

Born January 3, 1933, in Boone County, he was the son of the late Lee and Sadie Jewell McClanahan.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sons, Bobby and Kenneth Green.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Violet Gibson McClanahan; five sons, Randall Green and wife Joe of Sun Hill, Jimmy Green of Cyclone, Lester Green of Lynco, Dewey McClanahan of Pineville and David McClanahan and wife, Donna, of Clear Fork; five daughters, Truby Carper of Baileysville, Barbara Demspey and husband, Joe, of Sun Hill, Janice Graham and husband, Robert, of Norfork, Alice Toler and husband, Homer, of Sun Hill and Kimberly Daughtery of Sun Hill; and several grandchildren.

A celebration of Charles’ life will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at Clear Fork Independant Church of God with Rev. Junior Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in McClanahan Cemetery, Bald Knob.

Casketbearers will be family and friends.

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — Selma Christine Bennett Rose, 87, died Wednesday, March 3, 2010.

Ellis ‘John’ Ray Runyon

HOT SPRINGS, Va. — Ellis “John” Ray Runyon, 72, of Hot Springs, passed away peacefully at this home on Sunday, March 7, 2010.

He was born July 26, 1937, in Lester, W.Va., the son of the late William Merit Runyon and Allie Carr Runyon.

On April 12, 1961, he married his wife of 48 years, Glenna Green Runyon.

John was a 1957 graduate of Alderson High School in Alderson. He served in the United States Army where he was a medic and played football for the U.S. Army team. He graduated from the Greenbrier Culinary School at The Greenbrier hotel in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, in 1961. He worked at the Everglades Club in Palm Beach, Florida; The Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix, Arizona; and retired from the Homestead Resort in 1999 with 36 years of service. He sculptured many ice pieces to decorate the tables at the Homestead for dinners, weddings and parties. John never met a stranger and will be remembered by many for his sense of humor. He always had jokes ready to tell. He was a faithful member of the Hot Springs Baptist Church.

He is survived by his loving wife, Glenna Green Runyon of Hot Springs; two daughters, Carolyn Runyon Tingler and husband John of Covington, Va., Nancy Runyon Scyphers and husband Michael of Glen Allen, Va.; two grandsons, Ryan and Justin Scyphers of Glen Allen; three sisters, Mozelle Yates of Hinton, Betty Holliday and husband Bill of Alderson, and Mary Wolf and husband Timothy Dayton of Chesapeake, Va.; a brother, Damon Runyon and wife Ruby of Gauley Bridge; one sister-in-law, Edith Runyon of Union; a brother-in-law, Harlan Phillips of Worthington, Ky.; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, June Phillips, Bonnie Runyon and Charlotte Runyon; four brothers, Earl, Jack, Curtis and James Arthur Runyon; and one brother-in-law, Charles Yates.

Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at the Hot Springs Baptist Church with Pastor Garland Humphries officiating and Pastor David George assisting. Interment will be in the Warm Springs Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Timmy Gibson, Sam Campagna, Sam Phillips, Charles Holliday, Dwayne Harkleroad, Mac Bird and Timothy Dayton. Honorary pallbearers will be Arnold Bradberry and Roger May.

The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. today, Tuesday, at McLauglin and Young Funeral Home.

Shirley A. Wells

Shirley A. Wells, 75, of 304 Shawnee Circle, Beckley, died Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Hilltop Center.

Kenneth Henry Wheeler

Kenneth Henry Wheeler, 82, of Beckley, a loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away March 8, 2010, at his residence.

Born August 5, 1927, in Ansonia, Conn., he was the son of the late Alfred and Alice Lewis Wheeler.

Ken attended Colgate and Wake Forest universities and graduated from Marshall College now Marshall University. He received his master’s degree from New Mexico Highlands University. He played football at Colgate, Wake Forest and Marshall. He was inducted into the Ansonia High School football hall of fame. Ken was a teacher and football coach at Clear Fork, Stoco and Woodrow Wilson High School, where he also served as Athletic Director. He retired as Vice Principal from Woodrow Wilson in 1988. Ken proudly served with the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a nature and animal lover.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Dube and her husband Jim.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Betty Tonelli Wheeler; daughters, Kathy Wheeler of Greensboro, N.C., Joannie Slawinski of Wake Forest, N.C., sons, Paul Wheeler and wife Becky of Williamsburg, Va., John Wheeler and wife Kelly of Radford, Va.; grandchildren: Beth Childers and husband Jason, Maria Slawinski and fiancé Todd Lechner, Jennie Slawinski, Katy, Caroline, Luke and Michael Wheeler, Thad Wheeler and wife Kat, Emmy and Allie Wheeler; great-grandchildren, Cali and Ella Childers; brother, Ernest Wheeler and wife Joan, and sisters, Marion Swan and Evelyn Kuzma, all of Connecticut; niece, Elizabeth Thewes, and sister-in-law, Helen Thewes, both of Beckley.

A funeral liturgy will be 10 a.m. Thursday, March 11, 2010, at St. Francis deSales Catholic Church with Father Joshua Stevens officiating. Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Calfee Funeral Home where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. led by Rev. Mr. Don Wise.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Humane Society of Raleigh Co., P.O. Box 115, Beckley, WV 25802.
