Delbert Lee Brant

DANESE — Delbert Lee Brant of Danese went to be with the Lord on August 9, 2012, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center following a long illness.

Born November 1, 1939, in Lewisburg, WV, to the late Ema Edward Brant, and Mary Jack Brant.

In addition to his parents Delbert was preceded in death by a daughter Beverly Redden Morrell, a sister Evelyn Blankenship, and his brother Edward Brant.

Mr. Brant is survived by his wife Karen Simms Brant, their daughters Debra Brant of Meadow Bridge, Sharon Kupferer and husband Brian of Phoenix, AZ, and Karen Martin of Danese, their sons Rick Redden and his wife Stephanie of Rainelle, and Jesse Redden of Danese, and a sister Phyllis Dawson and husband Dewey of Parkersburg, WV, along with 5 grandsons, 3 Granddaughters, and 3 Great-Grandchildren.

He was retired from the auto industry where he was a factory worker for General Motors. He attended the Faith Free Will Baptist Church of Danese. He also enjoyed gardening and yard work.

The Family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of Greenbrier Valley Medical Center. In Lieu of Flowers Donations can be made to the Danese Christian School, P.O. Box 177, Danese, WV 25831.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 13, 2012, at the Faith Free Will Baptist Church in Danese at 2 p.m. with a one-hour visitation held prior. Burial following at Simms family Cemetery on Loops Road in Danese with Pastor Allen Whitt officiating.

Arrangements are being handled by Wallace and Wallace of Rainelle.



Louise Hancock Burdiss

Louise Hancock Burdiss, 86, of Park Avenue, Beckley, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity. The family will receive friends from noon until the service hour.

Carl Eddie Estep

COMFORT — Carl Eddie Estep, 60, of Comfort, died Aug. 8, 2012.

Funeral services will be at noon Monday, Aug. 13, in the Round Bottom Community Church, Peytona, with Pastor Darrell Ross and Pastor Roger Ross. Singers will be the church choir. Interment will be in Pineview Cemetery, Orgas. Visitation will be two hours before the service at the church.

Jean ‘Tess’ Cook Gunnoe

LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. — Jean “Tess” Cook Gunnoe, 88, of Libertyville, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012.

She was born April 26, 1924, in Naoma, W.Va., was a longtime Lombard, Ill., resident and had moved to Libertyville seven years ago.

In the 1940s, Jean had been a saleswomen and later retired from Continental Can after 30 years of service.

She is survived by her daughter, Lura A. Johnson; her grandson, Michael (Christine nee Bertaud) Gaiden; and her great-grandchildren, Liam Eric, Yvonne Jeanne and Samuel Henry Gaiden.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Al; and her son, Bill.

A memorial service and picnic will be held at noon at the old Cook home place on Saturday, Aug. 18, in Naoma.

Family and friends are invited to bring memories, pictures and a dish to share. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to (Jean’s favorite charity) St. Labre Indian School, P.O. Box 216, Ashland, MT 59003, would be greatly appreciated.

Philip Green Harvey

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Mr. Philip Green Harvey, age 55, passed away at his home in Rocky Mount, NC, and went to be with the Lord peacefully on July 14, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family after a long illness.

Philip was born on December 11th, 1956, in Summers County, West Virginia. He was the son of the late Basil Green Harvey and the late Betty Lou Butler Harvey. He was born and raised in Nimitz, West Virginia.

He was a dedicated employee with CSX Railroad for 28 years. He loved spending time with his family and was an avid outdoorsman.

He was preceded in death by his three brothers: Danny Ray Mansfield, Teddy James Mansfield and infant Anthony Rex Harvey.

He is survived by his loving wife Jackie, whom he departed on their 25th anniversary, two sons: Corey Philip Harvey and wife Stephanie of Nashville, NC, Joshua Ryan Harvey of the home, stepMother Pauline Harvey Meadows of Nimitz, West Virginia, two brothers: Jackie L. Harvey and wife Cathy of Nimitz, West Virginia, Tommy Harvey of Forest Hill, West Virginia, three sisters: Judy Blevins and Husband Ritchie of Huntington, West Virginia, Beverly Harvey of Nimitz, West Virginia, Sommer Carter and husband Jeff of Caldwell, West Virginia, three nephews: Jerry Dean Parker II, and wife Alicia, Daniel Harvey and Jackson Carter, two nieces: Sarah Harvey and Bailey Carter.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. on August 14, 2012, at the Jumping Branch Tabernacle in Jumping Branch.

Mildred M. Herald

BARGER SPRINGS — Mildred M. Herald, 79, of Barger Springs went home to be with the Lord Saturday, August 11, 2012, at her home following a long illness.

Born October 23, 1932, at Capeles, WV, she was the daughter of the late Clarence B. and Leona B. Southerland Puckett.

A lifelong resident of Summers County, she was a homemaker who enjoyed reading her Bible, listening to gospel music and spending time with her family and friends. Mildred was of the Baptist Faith.

Preceded in death by her husband, William O. Herald Sr., and two great-granddaughters, Lisa Marie and Kara Dawn Proffitt.

Those left to cherish her memory include five children, Marie Thompson of Princeton, Norma Garcia and husband Sonny of Barger Springs, Billy Herald and wife Elaine of Princeton, Debra Meadows and husband Jeff of Barger Springs and Birdine Hungate and husband Patrick of VA; eight grandchildren, Angel Angle, Melissa Garcia, Victor Garcia III, Scott Herald, Michael Garcia, William Farley, Jessica Hall and David Garcia; fifteen great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren and one brother, Richard E. Puckett and wife Mary Anna of Thompson Valley, VA.

Graveside services and burial will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 14, 2012, at Roselawn Cemetery in Princeton with Pastor Tim Spencer officiating.

There will be no visitation. Friends may gather at the cemetery at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Roy Allen Mann

BALLARD — Roy Allen Mann, age 73, of Ballard, WV, passed away Friday, August 10, 2012, at his home.

Born March 31, 1939, at Assurance, WV, he was the son of the late Preston Allen and Mary Elizabeth Dillon Mann.

Roy had worked for the WV Department of Highways and was retired from Monroe County Schools. He was a member of the Assurance Baptist Church, was an avid hunter and loved to play sports.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Lucas, one niece, Rhonda Mann, and one nephew, Jeff Wright.

Survivors include his loving wife of 35 years, Judy Bower Mann, four sons, Warren A. Mann and fiancée Ann O’Roark of Cashmere, WV, Thomas J. Conway and wife Donna of Hinton, WV, Scott Conway of Hickory, NC, and Bill J. Conway and wife Susan of Ballard, WV, three daughters, Jessica R. Williams and husband Bobby of Hans Creek, WV, Paula Lane of Bozoo, WV, and Jennifer Bailey and husband Acie of Ballard, WV, one brother, Kenneth Mann of Cooks Run, WV, two sisters, Anna Lee Wright of Narrows, VA, and Freda Belcher and husband Thurman of Lindside, WV, fourteen grandchildren, Ashley Mann and fiancé Joseph Hicks, Ryan Mann and wife Amanda, Waylon and Garrett Mann, Katelyn Lane, Haley Cochran, Kristi West, Dennis, John, Destiny, Zachary, Katelyn and Daniel Conway and Shana Brant, one great-grandson, Preston Allen Mann, several nieces and nephew.

Eddie Ory

RAINELLE — Eddie Ory, 82, of Rainelle, passed away Friday, Aug. 10, 2012, at Heartland of Rainelle.

Born April 16, 1930, in Beaver, he was the son of the late Stuart Lee Ory and the late Lucy Ruth Underwood Ory.

His first job was at the Scarbro Theater. When his Dad’s mine job closed, all of the family moved to Quinwood. At age 21, Eddie began carpentry and painting, from which he retired in 1992 at age 62. He was a member of the Lilly Park Gospel Church of Rainelle.

In addition to his parents, Eddie was preceded in death by his wife, Lou Ory, brother, Tom Ory, and nephew, Franklin Aurednik.

Survivors include a sister, Sophia Lee Aurednik of Rainelle, a brother, Jim Ory of Rupert, a niece, Carol Owens of Rainelle, two nephews, Gary and Bobby Aurednik of Rainelle, and a great-niece, Nicole Owens of Rainelle.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel, Rainelle. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel, Rainelle.

PIPESTEM — Janice Lee Buckland Reed, 84, of True Road, Pipestem, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, August 10, 2012, at Summers County Appalachian Regional Hospital following a short illness.

Born January 18, 1928, at Ronceverte, she was a daughter of the late Lloyd H. and Rosa Meadows Buckland.      

Janice was a member of the Mount Olivet Church, a homemaker and seamstress who enjoyed cooking and sewing. She will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, wife and sister.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Maynard Ray Buckland.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 66 years, James E. Reed; one daughter, Linda Hampton and husband Randy of Athens; three sons, Gary Reed of Pipestem, Danny Reed of Denver, CO, David Reed and wife Jessica of Aurora, CO; seven grandchildren, Rance Hampton, Dustin Hampton, Jason Reed, Jodie Reed, Ian Buscemi, Shelton Reed, Austin Reed; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Betty Buckland of Hinton, Carole McCormick of Hinton and Barbara Hedrick and husband Norvin of St. Albans.

Angela Gail Varney

LYNCO — Angela Gail Varney, 19, of Lynco, WV, departed this life on Thursday, August 9, 2012, in Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, WV, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was born September 23, 1992, to parents Gayle and Norma Varney. She was their precious “Smiley Face” and “Angel.” She was the light and love of her parents’ life. She was always smiling and full of joy. She had one dear sister, Elizabeth Varney Gibson.

She was a graduate of Westside High School and was attending Concord University where she was excelling and majoring in English Literature. She was working with CU professor O’Haynes on research on her favorite poet, Edgar Allen Poe, for publication. “The Conqueror Worm” was her favorite poem and she also often quoted “The Raven.” She worked at GameStop in the Mercer Mall. She had dozens of online friends. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially playing video games with her favorite nephew Austin, and she enjoyed spending time with her caring boyfriend, William Rookstool III. She loved movies, games, comics and she went to the opening night showing of the new Batman movie on her last date with Will. She was a band member for three years in middle school and all four years of high school playing tenor saxophone, alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, guitar, piano, tuba, and oboe. Other things that she enjoyed were riding her four-wheeler and taking pictures of everything around her. In years past she faithfully attended Clear Fork Valley Baptist Church where she accepted Jesus Christ at VBS. She was a light in the lives of the many people who loved her and she will be greatly missed.

Preceding her in death were her paternal grandparents Ballard and Alline Varney; uncles Freddy Sellards, Bobby Varney, and Randy Varney; aunts Patsy Vint and Lula Belle Varney.

Those left to cherish her memories include her parents Gayle and Norma Varney of Lynco; maternal grandmother Goldie Sellards of Matheny, WV; a sister Elizabeth “Beth” and her husband Jessie Gibson, Jr., of Lynco, WV; a niece Brittany Gibson and a nephew Austin Gibson both of Lynco, WV; her boyfriend William Rookstool, III, of Bluefield, VA; uncles Roger Varney, David Varney, Randy Sellards, James Sellards, Charlie (Gina) Sellards, and William Sellards; aunts Lucille Varney, Beatrice Varney (Bruce) Lamb, Carolyn (Ronnie) Coleman, and Mary (John) Dunlap, and a host of cousins, including a special cousin Michael Dunlap of TX.

Matthew Thomas Williams

LONG BRANCH — Matthew Thomas Williams, 51, of Long Branch, WV, passed away Sunday, August 5, 2012, at his home.

He was born at Miami, FL, on July 23, 1961.

Matthew worked for over 30 years in mining. He was employed at the Kingston #1 mine at Kingston, WV, for the past 15 1/2 years. He loved his job and was very proud to work with all of the “Mighty Men of Kingston.” Matthew loved his job, friends, church and family and enjoyed reading and going to church.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ida Faye Humphrey Williams, and an infant son.

Those left to cherish the fond memories include his wife of 33 years, Connie; an only daughter, Ashley Byers and husband Royal; his father, Billy Williams. Also, very special grandson “Trey” Byers of Pax, one older brother, Carlos Williams of Pax, and many very special brothers and sisters-in-law. Along with many cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends.

James  D. ‘Boss Man’ Wolfe

OAK HILL — James D. “Boss Man” Wolfe, 79, of Oak Hill, WV, died on Thursday, August 9, 2012, at his home.

Born September 11, 1932, at Pax, WV, he was the son of the late Roy H. and Elsie Dove Strickland Wolfe.

He was a retired coal miner having 46 years service.

Mr. Wolfe was a member of the Gentry Missionary Baptist Church.

He was a farmer, an avid hunter and a member of the UMWA. He served as a paramedic with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

A brother, William R. Wolfe, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy L. Yarber Wolfe, two sons, Darrell W. Wolfe and wife, Deborah, of Oak Hill and Timmy A. Wolfe and wife, Melinda, of Oak Hill, and sisters, Mary Moore of Reynoldsburg, OH, and Maxine Elder of Oak Hill.

He is also survived by three grandchildren, James R. Wolfe, Benjamin D. Wolfe and wife, Crystal, and Cody M. Wolfe, and three great-grandchildren, Dustin, Maddie and Tyler.

Funeral services will be on Monday, August 13, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Pastor Bill Drennen officiating. Burial will be at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.

Dr. Howard Austin Woolwine

BECKWITH — Dr. Howard Austin Woolwine, 83, of Beckwith, passed away Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at Cabell-Huntington Hospital, Huntington.

Born on September 6, 1928, at Fayetteville, he was the son of the late Clayton H. and Betty Lightner Woolwine.

Dr. Woolwine was of the Baptist faith and attended Fayetteville Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

He was a retired DDS dentist and had practice in Gauley Bridge, Gary, and owned Woolwine Dentist Office in Ansted. After retirement he was a substitute teacher/supervisor at WV Tech in Montgomery.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Woolwine Ellis; brother, Larry Woolwine; and stepdaughter, Janice Bragg.

Left to cherish his memory include his wife, Goldie Laing Woolwine; brother, Carl Clayton Woolwine of Beckwith; stepdaughter, Lois Matthews and husband, John, of Beckwith; brother-in-law, Don Bragg of Danese; grandchildren, Deborah Trevithick of Beaufort, SC, Bill Smith and wife, Josette, of Oak Hill, and Melissa Bragg and husband, Prentiss, of Danese; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.
