On Friday, July 11th, 2014, after a long and fruitful life, Mrs. Eula Hess passed away at her home in Beckley in the 92nd year of life.
One of seven children, Eula Marie Yates was born on April 12th, 1922, at Drill, VA. She was the daughter of Miles and Ida Armes Yates. Her brothers and sister, Carless and Donald Yates, Garsel and Virgil Hale and Gladys Cole, have preceded her in death. Her dear sister, Barbara Hale of North Tazewell, VA, is the last surviving member of her family.
Eula spent her childhood at Drill. On August 12th, 1939, she married her beloved husband, Paul Hess. Eula and Paul were blessed with six children. Larry David died in infancy; Gary, Paul Jr., Linda, Gerald and Doug all survive. Eula, Paul and the children spent many years in Honaker, VA, where Paul worked in mining, the children attended Honaker High School and Eula was a devoted wife and mother. In 1967, as the mining industry waned in Virginia, Eula and Paul would migrate to Lynco in Wyoming County. Eula, who had put her own education on hold, would study for her GED at Oceana High School.
In 1975, Eula and Paul settled in Beckley. They would enjoy many good years together. Eula and Paul worshiped at the Sprague Freewill Baptist Church right down the street and immensely enjoyed their church family. Yesterday, on July 13th, twenty years ago, Paul died after a lengthy illness. Eula stayed active with her church and swimming at the YMCA. She loved games and enjoyed singing and, of course, most of all her family. In her home she proudly displayed pictures lined up together of all eleven of her grandchildren. Over the years she has been blessed with 26 great-grandchildren. Eula always enjoyed occasions with these young people. They kept her YOUNG.
Proverbs 31:28, “Her children arise up, and call her blessed,…”
Eula’s children adored her. She meant a great deal to them. Although many of them lived distances from her, they loved to come home and see her. She leaves to forever cherish her memory her four sons, daughter and their spouses. Gary Hess and his wife, Nan-c, of York, PA, Paul Hess Jr., and his wife, Sandra, of Ovilla, TX, Linda Hess Barton and her husband, JC, of Galax, VA, Gerald Hess and his wife, Susie, of Farmville, VA, and Doug Hess and his wife, Candy, of Bluefield.
On Tuesday, July 15th, at 11 a.m. there will be a Home Going Service for Eula at the Sprague Freewill Baptist Church. Rev. Fred Lovell will be officiating. Eula will be laid to rest beside her beloved Paul in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity. And now, “Oh Glad Reunion…” Eula’s family will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary, 1200 Harper Road, Beckley, and one hour prior to the services on Tuesday at the church.
The family suggests donations of sympathy can be made to the Sprague Freewill Baptist Church or Hospice of Southern West Virginia, PO Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802.
We, Eula’s family, have been so honored to have our Mother and Ma-maw so long. She has lived a long and active life and was able to be independent almost until the end. What a gift she was to us.
Arrangements are by Melton Mortuary. Online condolences may be sent to www.meltonmortuary.com.
