Adelaide James Bryant

Adelaide James Bryant died on Friday, July 4, 2014, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital, seven days shy of her 92nd birthday, from complications resulting from a fall.

She was born to the late Thomas and Lillie James on July 11, 1922, at home on the Old Minden Road in Oak Hill. She was the middle daughter of eight children. She grew up in Oak Hill and was proud to be a graduating member of the Oak Hill High School Class of 1940.

Adelaide worked in a laboratory at the DuPont chemical plant during World War II, and, after marrying in 1946, she and her late husband, Leslie E. “Rink” Bryant, Jr., eventually made their home in the Oakridge Addition of Fayetteville from late 1955 until his death in 1995. They were married for 49 years. After Leslie’s death, she continued to be the homemaker to her sons and grandchildren, who lived either in the house with her, or next door, on both sides, until the time of her death.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by all of her brothers and sisters: Harry, Russell, and Jennings (Jinx), and Willa, Phyllis, Lucille, and Drema.

Adelaide is survived by her two sons, Robert and Thomas, her grandsons, Robby, Billy, and Bryan, her granddaughter, Kacey, her great-grandchildren, Dylan, Preston, and Brandon, and by several nieces and nephews, of which her favorite, without any intended offense to all of the others, was her dear nephew Mickey.

In accordance with her end-of-life arrangements under the direction of Blue Ridge Funeral Home of Beckley, her remains were cremated without visitation or service. The family thanks Michael Knotts of Blue Ridge for his exceptional assistance. Online condolences may be sent to (

The family would appreciate that those, who wish to do so, make memorial donations in her name to the New River Humane Society Incorporated, P.O. Box 955, Fayetteville, West Virginia 25840.
