Arnold ‘Nick’ Burgess

OAK HILL — Beloved husband, father, papa, uncle and friend Nick Burgess, 82, of Oak Hill, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 24, 2014.

Born July 14, 1931, in Dakota, W.Va., he was the youngest son of Patsy and Hattie Burgess, he lived most of his life in Oak Hill.

Nick is survived by his wife Juliane, sister Helen Adkins of Marmet, Karl Bruening of Biloxi, Miss., sons Butch, Rob (Nancy), Mike, and Frank (Tina), granddaughters Britny, Sarah, Tori (Shane) Lovern, Aaron and Kaela, grandsons Nikolas, Zachary and Ethan, great-grandsons Dylan and Rilen, great-granddaughter Lillian and his many loving nieces and nephews both near and far.

He is preceded in death by his parents, nine loving brothers and sisters, and daughter-in-law Derrenda (Mike).

Nick’s true passion in life was his family; he was an accomplished electrician working predominately in the coal industry before retiring in 1986 from the New River Coal Company in Mt. Hope.

With a keen sense of adventure he stole away to the United States Navy at the tender age of 15 in the aftermath of World War II serving as a crewman aboard riverine patrol craft on the Rhine River in post war Germany. The young sailor met his beloved Juliane while stationed in Bremerhaven; January 27, 2014, would have marked their 62nd wedding anniversary. Nick faithfully served his country with distinction for greater than 22 years retiring as a Master Sargent from the United States Air Force in 1969. He truly epitomized patriotism and service before self.

Special thanks to the entirety of the ER staff at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill and the Emergency Responders of Jan-Care and General Ambulance for your tireless efforts and compassion. Thank you.
