MAYNOR — Roger Lee Akers, 68, of Maynor, died on Monday, January 27, 2014.

Funeral services will be on Friday, January 31, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

ALDERSON — Ernest Edwin Ballard, age 87, of Alderson, passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2014, at the White Sulphur Springs Center, White Sulphur Springs, following a long illness.

Cecil Lewis Bennett

ALDERSON — Cecil Lewis Bennett, 75, of Alderson, after a courageous fight with cancer, went home to be with the Lord on January 26, 2014. He will always be remembered as a loving husband and generous friend. He enjoyed Bluegrass music, quiet evenings on the front porch, visiting with good friends and he especially loved his Percheron and miniature draft horses along with his canine companions, Bubby and Lil Man.

He was born in Monroe County, W.Va., March 28, 1938, a son of the late James Luther and Jewell Ballangee Bennett.

In addition to being a Veteran of the United States Army, he was a retired superintendent for S. J. Groves and a retiree of Dunn and Day along with having served 16 years as a bus operator with Greenbrier County Schools.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Lee Bennett and brother-in-laws, Lloyd Carter and Al O’Neil.

Those left to remember him include his loving wife of 35 years, Betty Bennett; a daughter, Tammy Whitman and husband, Charles and her son, Joseph; three step children, Barbara Bowles, Rick Shires and wife, Linda, Artie Shires and wife, Carmela; seven  grandchildren, Chrissy, Chad, Bryan, Brittany, Keri, Stacy and especially, Haylee; a brother, Carl Bennett and wife, Wanda; three sisters, Delphia Lemons and husband, Calvin, Doris O’Neil and Carol Carter; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, January 30, 2014 at the Groves Funeral Home Chapel in Union with the Rev. Jonathan Hunt officiating. Burial will follow at the Alderson Cemetery, Fletcher Division at Alderson.

Friends may call at the Groves Funeral Home in Union from 12:30 p.m. until service time Thursday.

FAYETTEVILLE — Edgar Lee “Eddie” Bowyer, 61, of Fayetteville, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014.

Arnold ‘Nick’ Burgess

OAK HILL — Beloved husband, father, papa, uncle and friend Nick Burgess, 82, of Oak Hill, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 24, 2014.

Born July 14, 1931, in Dakota, W.Va., he was the youngest son of Patsy and Hattie Burgess, he lived most of his life in Oak Hill.

Nick is survived by his wife Juliane, sister Helen Adkins of Marmet, Karl Bruening of Biloxi, Miss., sons Butch, Rob (Nancy), Mike, and Frank (Tina), granddaughters Britny, Sarah, Tori (Shane) Lovern, Aaron and Kaela, grandsons Nikolas, Zachary and Ethan, great-grandsons Dylan and Rilen, great-granddaughter Lillian and his many loving nieces and nephews both near and far. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, nine loving brothers and sisters, and daughter-in-law Derrenda (Mike).

Nick’s true passion in life was his family; he was an accomplished electrician working predominately in the coal industry before retiring in 1986 from the New River Coal Company in Mt. Hope. 

With a keen sense of adventure he stole away to the United States Navy at the tender age of 15 in the aftermath of World War II serving as a crewman aboard riverine patrol craft on the Rhine River in post war Germany. The young sailor met his beloved Juliane while stationed in Bremerhaven; January 27, 2014, would have marked their 62nd wedding anniversary. Nick faithfully served his country with distinction for greater than 22 years retiring as a Master Sargent from the United States Air Force in 1969. He truly epitomized patriotism and service before self.

Ola Shrewsberry Cole

LERONA — Ola Shrewsberry Cole, age 77 of Lerona, formerly of Ghent, passed away at the Princeton Community Hospital on Saturday, January 25, 2014.

Born on June 30, 1936, at Basin, she was the daughter of the late Paris Shrewsberry and  Louise Farley Shrewsberry.

Mrs. Cole was a former head waitress at the Wine Cellar in Columbus, Ohio, for almost 20 years, and was of the Christian faith. She had made her home at Lerona for the past 25 years. Mrs. Cole enjoyed cooking, gardening, and spending time with her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Cole, by brothers, Jasper, Warren, Bennett, Garland, and Gilmer Shrewsberry, and by sisters, Helen Waddell, Wilma Peters, and Pauline Shrewsberry.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Peggy Cole of Lerona, Donna Cole and her partner Candy Southerland of Lerona, and Barbara Cole of Lerona. A granddaughter, Nichole Pennington and her husband Josiah of Hampton, Va.,  great grandchildren, Eleana Lynn Pennington, Lillian Ola Pennington.

Brothers, Basil Shrewsberry and his wife B.B. of Belleview, Florida, Harry Shrewsberry and his wife Charlene of Cary, Ill., Thomas Shrewsberry of Odd, and sisters, Icy May Green of Fletcher, North Carolina, and Juanita Gay Fuller and her husband Joe of Niles, Ill.  Her special pets, Shadowfax, Sable, Buddy, Willie, Kelsey, and Sasha.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Orville Setliff officiating. Burial will follow at the Paris Shrewsberry Cemetery on the Odd Road, Ghent, West Virginia.

Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be directed to the local animal shelter in memory of Mrs. Cole.

Glenda Faglie Cook

On Sunday, January 26, 2014, our most loved Glenda Faglie Cook, 71, of Crab Orchard was called home by her heavenly Father.

Born at Augusta, Ga., on Dec. 28, 1942, Glenda was the daughter of the late Buford Faglie and Nora Faglie Purvis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step father John W. Purvis.

Glenda graduated from Augusta College in 1962 and later earned an Associate degree from Marshall University.

Glenda married the love of her life, Leo “Gib” Cook. To this union was born two children, Susan and Stephen. Glenda was a lifelong homemaker and devoted caregiver of her family. Glenda was an active member of Jordan Christian Fellowship in Sophia, devoting her time to praying for and supporting missions around the world. Glenda served as President of Women’s Missionary Union in the West Virginia Southern Baptist Convention, children’s missions camp director, girls in action leader and director, bible study leader and mentor.

Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 51 years, Leo “Gib” Cook, daughter Susan Chada and her husband David, son, Stephen Cook, sister Carolyn Turner and her husband Johnny, stepbrother Weldon Purvis III and wife Sue, four grandchildren Ashleigh and her husband Philip, Brandon, Christopher and Jonathan, two great granddaughters, four nieces and their families. 

On Thursday, January 30th, at 2 p.m. we will honor Glenda with a “Service of Remembrance at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastor Tim Roberts will be officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday Jan 29th, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Melton Mortuary and one hour prior to the service. Glenda will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. 

The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Jordan Christian Fellowship for missions and local ministry. 

As we say goodbye to our beloved Glenda her granddaughter writes, “You are someone that leaves people better than you found them. I have watched you live your life taking care of others, serving them and counting them as greater than yourself. You have done so much more than teach me about Jesus’ love, you have showed it to me.”

Don Louie Deskins Sr.

Don Louie Deskins Sr., 82, of Daniels, passed away Monday, January 27, 2014.

Born May 19, 1931, he was the son of the late Robert and Bertha Tate Deskins.

Don was a 1948 graduate of Man High School. He proudly served four years in the Air Force; then worked in the mining industry for 39 years before starting his own business in mine equipment sales and consulting. Don spent his later years enjoying his time with his grandchildren. He was of the Protestant faith.

In addition to his parents, Don is preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Jr., Harold, and Jack Deskins; sister, Geraldine Deskins.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Dora Bassham Deskins; sons, Don Deskins Jr. (Lou), W. Mark (Cheryl), Jack Deskins (Lisa); daughter, Sandra Wickline (Danny), Sarah Mattern (Scott); grandchildren, Joshua, Matthew, Tori, Samuel, Nicholaus, Isaac, Josiah, Aiden, Griffin; brother, Eldon Deskins (Nancy); sisters, Awayn Anderson (Newton), Niawana Pennington (Jim).

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

BURLESON, Texas — Dorothy Jeanne Hardiman, 87, of Burleson, formerly of Peterstown, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014.

David Lee Harper

HAMPTON, Ga. — Mr. David Lee Harper, age 66, of Hampton, passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at Spalding Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Harper was born on January 28, 1947, in Mt. Tabor, W.Va., he was the son of the late Walter Winifred and Edith Holt Harper Hutchison.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam War. He retired from ABF Truck Lines in 2009. He worked construction for the coal mines with J.O. Lively for 15 years before moving to Georgia in 1987. He was a faithful member of the Liberty Baptist Tabernacle in Stockbridge.

He was preceded in death by his brother, James Franklin Harper.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Cox Harper of Hampton; daughters and sons-in-law, Lori and Scott Conaway of Griffin and Stephanie and Darrell Akers of Hampton; granddaughters, Rachael Conaway and Hannah Akers; brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Carolyn Harper; sister and brother-in-law, Delores and Jerry Burks.

Funeral services for Mr. David Lee Harper will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary of the Liberty Baptist Tabernacle. Rev. Matt Grimes and Rev. Glen Anderson will officiate. Burial will follow in Camp Memorial Park in Fayetteville. Friends may visit the family on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dewey A. Hooper

Dewey A. Hooper, age 73 of Shady Spring, passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at his home.

Born on March 20, 1940, at Barn, W.Va., he was the son of the late  Crawford Hooper and Dorothy Ayers Hooper.

Mr. Hooper was a retired coal miner, and a member of the UMWA. He was of the Baptist faith, and was a U.S. Navy Veteran .

Mr. Hooper was preceded in death by three brothers, Jackie, Forest Gene, and Larry Dean Hooper and by a sister, Pamela Dawn Hooper.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife of 53 years,  Ethel Ayers Hooper; five children, Dewey Hooper Jr. and his wife Sherry of Shady Spring, Theressa Lee Hooper of Shady Spring, Patricia Hunter and her husband Michael of South Boston, Va.,  Larry Dean Hooper of Virginia, and Johnny Hooper of Shady Spring; a sister, Brenda Kelly of Alexandria, Virginia, 11 grandchildren, and seven  great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at 1 p.m.  with Pastor Lowell Black officiating.  Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

BASTIAN, Va. — Kimberly Renee Lilly, 51, of Grapefield Road, Bastian, died Monday, January 27, 2014, at her residence with her loving family by her side.

Born May 6, 1962, in Beckley, she was the daughter of James and Alice Grimmett Anderson of Mt. Hope, W.Va.

Kimberly had a love for animals and a kind heart that carried over in her professional career.

She was a former Operating Room Technician at Bluefield Regional Hospital with 18 years of service.

She was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Bastian Union Church.

In addition to her parents, Kimberly is survived by her husband, Allen B. Lilly of Bastian; one son, Coty Lilly, Bastian; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Libby and Mark Bailey and Christina and Jessie Adkins, all of Mt. Hope; one brother, James Anderson II, of Carlton, Va.; nieces and nephews, Christopher Bailey, Shasta and Stephen Walker, Cheyenne Bailey, Zachary and Hunter Adkins, all of Mt. Hope.

A service to celebrate the life of Kimberly Renee Lilly, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 30, 2014, from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Paul Looney officiating. Lowell Allen Osborne Sr., 71, of Craig Road, Rainelle, born June 3, 1942, passed away on Tuesday morning January 28, 2014, following a short illness. He was the son of the late Lualzo Osborne and Bernice Osborne Tincher both of Rainelle.

Lowell was married to Elma Martin Osborne of Rainelle. Lowell worked as a night watchmen at a local sawmill and he was a member of the Little Sewell Baptist Church of Rainelle.

Other than his parents he is preceded in death by a uncle Roy Jones of Buckhannon, W.Va. Other than his loving wife he is survived by one daughter; Anna Bennett and husband James of Danese, W.Va., one son; Junior Osborne of Rainelle, W.Va., one sister; Edith Zimmerman and husband Elvin of Rainelle, W.Va., a uncle; Jim Jones of Buckhannon, W.Va. and three  grandchildren; James Osborne, Colton Bennett and Hunter Bennett.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Ray Sexton will be officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at the Wallace and Wallace funeral home in Rainelle. Burial will follow the funeral at the Wallace Memorial Cemetery in Clintonville, W.Va.
