Betty Jane Dixon Banks

Betty Jane Dixon Banks, “Nana”, 83, of Seth, passed away  Saturday, December 7, 2013.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at the Healing Stream Baptist Church at Seth with Pastor Keith George officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery at Orgas.

Katherine Kyle  Bowden

POQUOSON, Va. — On Monday, December 9, 2013, Nellie Katherine Kyle Bowden went home to glory. Katherine, a native of Beckley, and a 1966 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, was a 24 year resident of Poquoson.

She is survived by her husband of 38 years, James Atticus Bowden; children, Molly Osyf and husband Peter, J. Albert Bowden II, and Maggie Buchanan and husband Russell; sister, Jackie Titus and husband, Thomas; brother, Ronnie Kyle and wife, Linda; as well as many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.  She also leaves behind the lights of her life, grandchildren, Sophia, Colin and Lillian Osyf, and Bonnie Kyle Buchanan.

She was preceded in death by parents, Bonnie Kyle Stansbury and Jack Kyle as well as grandparents, Wavie Acord Miller and Arnett Miller.

Katherine was a beloved member of the Mount Vernon Elementary School staff as the school’s guidance counselor for almost 20 years. A Sunday school teacher at Emmaus Baptist Church, passionate daughter of Christ, best friend to many, avid gardener and reader, she loved life and especially all those who she shared it with through the years. While we take comfort in her belief in our Lord and Savior and his promise of everlasting life, our grief is profound and she will be forever missed.

The family will receive friends Thursday, December 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson. A Celebration of Katherine’s life will follow 4 p.m. on Friday, December 13, at Bethel Baptist Church, Tabb, by Pastor Dan Cromer, followed by a reception at the church. Burial will follow in the Spring at Arlington National Cemetery.

Harry Michael (Mike) ‘Bo Bo’ Brummett

LYNCO — Harry Michael (Mike) “Bo Bo” Brummett, 65, went home to be with the Lord Monday, December 9, 2013 at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born May 1, 1948 in Martinsburg, Ind., he was the son of the late Albert and Alice Brummett.

Mike was a retired coal miner having worked for Patriot Coal Company and was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving his country in Vietnam. He attended Harvest Time Worship Center and New Life Community Church. Mike was a member of the Wyoming County Honor Guard; he loved serving God and his community.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Bonnie Jean McCarty Brummett; his daughter, Diana Newsome and husband, Jesse of Crouch’s Farm; two grandchildren, Adrian Nichole Newsome, a student at Concord University and Ethan Hunter Newsome, a student at Oceana Middle School and four siblings, Donna Brummett of Florida, Rick Brummett of South Carolina, Mark Brummett of Indiana and Pam Brummett of Indiana.

A celebration of Mike’s life will be 1 p.m., Friday, December 13, 2013 at New Life Community Church, Jesse. The Rev. Randy Bowles and Rev. Jay Morgan will officiate. Interment will follow at Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Military rites will be performed by the Wyoming County Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends from 12 noon until time of service Friday, at the church.

Alice Ruth Crookshanks

RAINELLE — Alice Ruth Crookshanks, 86, of Loops Road, Rainelle, passed away Wednesday, December 11, 2013, in the Heartland of Rainelle Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, following a long illness.

Born April 7, 1927 in Middletown, Rainelle, she was the daughter of the late William Conley and Molly Carter Vestal.

Ruth was a homemaker and a member of the Big Sewell Baptist Church. 

In addition to her parents, Ruth is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Ira David Crookshanks; five  brothers William Allison, Eugene, Theodore, Woodrow and Franklin Vestal; two sisters Ester Sims and Mary Sims.

Survivors include three sons Warren and wife Sharon of Cedar Bluff, Richard and wife Carolyn of Loops Road, Rainelle and Ira Jr. and wife Billie of Athens; one brother John Vestal and wife Delores of McRoss; one sister Tillie Spence of Charmco; four  grandchildren Richard Crookshanks II of Fairmont, Alexander Crookshanks of Blacksburg, Va., Marisa Crookshanks of Rainelle and Misty Loggins of Athens; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Heartland of Rainelle for the great care given to their mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister.

Services will be 12 noon on Friday, December 13, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Inc., Rainelle, with Pastor Mike Tincher officiating. Burial will follow in the Sims Cemetery on Loops Road, Rainelle.

Friends may call one hour before the service from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at the funeral home.

Joan ‘Cookie’ Powell Edmonds

HENDERSON, N.C. — Joan “Cookie” Powell Edmonds, of Henderson, formerly of Beckley, departed this life peacefully on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C.

Born in Winding Gulf, W.Va., Joan was the daughter of the late Junior and Elnora Powell of Beckley.

Cookie graduated from Stratton High School Class of 1960.

She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Beckley. Joan had an unconditional love for children and devoted her life to providing social services to families in need throughout West Virginia, New Jersey and North Carolina. The children and families that she nurtured and assisted are too numerous to list. Joan possessed a knowledge and passion for bowling and tennis that she passed along to her husband, family and community.

Joan graduated from Essex County College in Newark, N.J., where she received an Associate Business Degree and worked for Public Service Gas and Electric for more than twenty years. Following relocation to Henderson, N.C., Joan worked for the Vance County Social Services Department of Adult Medicaid as a supervisor.  

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Hannah and Eunice Reeves and brother, James Powell.

Joan leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband of 46 years, Jerry Edmonds Jr; son, Jerry (Dorcel) Edmonds III of Milwaukee, Wis.; two grandchildren, Jerrica Edmonds of Memphis, Tenn. and Jerry Edmonds IV of Bowling Green, Ky.; sisters, Lynda (David) Powell Cole of  Dallas, Texas and Deborah (Ray) Powell Williams of Grand Rapids, Mich.; brothers William (Myrna) Powell of Baltimore, Md., Nathaniel (Effie) Powell of Baltimore, Md. and Raymond Powell of  St Petersburg, Fla.; aunt, Beulah Chambers of Harrisburg, Pa. and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Saturday, December 14, 2013 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 142 Mool Avenue, Beckley with Rev. Thomas V. Moore and Rev. Nelson Staples III officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Grace Wilson Howe

SCOTTSVILLE, N.Y. — Grace Wilson Howe, 93, went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday, December 10, 2013.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Monice Wilson and Clarence Howe; grandson, Phillip Michael Young.

Grace is survived by her children, James (Mary) E. Wilson of North Carolina and Cheryln (Fay) Dick-Gotham; grandchildren, Frank (Mary) Wilson, Jennifer (Brian) Mapes, Eric (Erika) Young, Jennifer (John) Heneghan and Jessica (Matt) Rapp; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Grace was a woman of great faith, full of kindness and generosity.

Phyllis Carol Mills Lilly

Phyllis Carol Mills Lilly, age 71 of Sophia, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family, friends, and her puppy “Honey”.

Born on July 26, 1942 at Fitzpatrick, she was the daughter of the late Shirley Mills and Margaret Brubaker Mills. She married her late husband Thomas Eugene Lilly on February 17, 1962.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth Furmidge, by brothers, Shirley “Brother” Mills, Donald Ray Mills, and Charles Mills.

Phyllis was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and sister. She was a true friend to all who knew her. She will be sadly missed by all.

Phyllis was a member of the Lillybrook Freewill Baptist Church and was very dedicated to her church family.  She never lost faith or trust in the Lord.  She fought a hard battle and now she has won.

Survivors include two sisters, June Ann Mills Howington and her husband Ed of Virginia, and Gladys Mills Sexton of Coal City. Four sons, Tommy Lilly of Sophia, Jeff Lilly and his wife Gina of Fayetteville, WV, Randy Lilly of Sophia, and Craig Lilly of Sophia. A daughter,  Margaret Reed and her husband Eddie of Coal City.

Phyllis has nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and two great grandsons on the way. Many nieces and nephews and other family members also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Thursday December 12, 2013 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Lowell Black officiating. Burial will follow at the Thompson Cemetery at Coal City.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Tommy, Randy, Jeff, Craig, and J.T. Lilly, and Eddie Reed. Honorary pallbearer will be Travis Owens.

The family would like to thank most of all Dr. Oar, and Hospice of Southern WV for their compassionate care and the comfort that they provided to the family.

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. James Kevin Miller, 54, of Greeneville, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, at his home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Miller and Ethyl Huffman; grandparents, James and Viola Hatcher and brother, Ian Gilbert Miller.

Survivors include a daughter Whitney Miller; grandson, Braxton Crittenden; brothers and sister-in-law, Robert Lyle Jr. and Lisa Miller, Michael Miller, Richard Miller, William Miller; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lisa and Don Smith, Michelle and Mike Dyer, Rena Russell, Patty Devoti; sister-in-law, Norma Miller; step mother, Betty Miller; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at the Jeffers Funeral Chapel downtown, with Pastor David Fox officiating. Interment will follow in Andrew Johnson National Cemetery.

Family will serve as pallbearers.

Claudette Morgan, 55, of Beckett Dr., Beckley, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, at Charleston Area Medical Center.

Born April 21, 1958, at Welch, W.Va., the daughter of the late Nancy E. Kennedy Hatfield and Franklin D. Hatfield.

Survivors include her husband of 32 years, Herbert Morgan Jr.; a daughter, Latisha (Dusty) Cochran of Crab Orchard, Beckley; a son, Jeremy Morgan of Lake Norman, N.C.; two grandsons, Gavin and Maddox (Maggix) Cochran of Crab Orchard, Beckley; two sisters, Andrea (Doug) Bledsoe of Hanover and Nannie King of Charleston; four brothers, Oley (Marsha) Hatfield, Meredith (Regina) Hatfield, James Hatfield and Barry Hatfield, all of Hanover; three brothers-in-law, Randy (Drema) Morgan of Indian Creek; Steve (Tammy) Morgan of Dandridge, Tenn., Kenny (Sonja) Morgan of Saulsville; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Atwell and Barbie (Tracy) Cline, both of Indian Creek; mother-in-law, Hattie Morgan of Indian Creek; very dear friend, Mila Darnell of Coal Mountain.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at the Cornerstone Freewill Baptist Church, Crab Orchard, Beckley, with the Rev. James Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Harper Road, Beckley.

Marian E. Nolley

Marian Elizabeth Nolley, passed away at the age of 76 at the Bowers Hospice House following a long illness.

She will be remembered by all who knew her, of her giving and caring for others.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Frances Nolley.

Marian is survived by five siblings; Mary Frances Taylor, George Nolley, Robert Nolley (Sandi), John Nolley (Sandy), and Martha Taylor (E.C.). She is also survived by nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.

Marian was a graduate of Mullens High School and Concord College. She spent her career in teaching, retiring from the Wyoming County Schools. Following 6 1/2 years of care giving for her mother, Marian returned to her love of teaching at Son Light Christian Academy.

Her love of young people led her into service as a Girl Scout Leader and Rainbow Chapter of the Eastern Star. Marian worked with the youth of the Mullens United Methodist Church and served on the Board of Directors of the Mullens United Methodist Church Day Care Center.

Marian contributed to the community of Mullens, serving on the Library Board, working with RAIL, was an active member of the Mullens Area Chamber of Commerce, and Wyoming County Council of the Arts. She was honored in 1981 as the Mullens Outstanding Citizen of the Year.

Marian was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She possessed a voracious reading appetite and loved crafts which filled her spare time. She was devoted to her family, helping all family members and will be sadly missed by all.

A celebration of Marian’s life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, December 14, 2013 in the Friendship Hall of the Mullens United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Bowers Hospice House, Mullens United Methodist Church, or the Mullens Area Public Library.

Gladys Tackett Porterfield

RONCEVERTE — Gladys Tackett Porterfield, 83, of Ronceverte, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at Greenbrier Manor in Fairlea.

Born Sept. 26, 1930, in Welch, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Sollie and Bertha Tackett.

Mrs. Porterfield was a member of the Ronceverte Baptist Church, was a former member of the Ronceverte Presbyterian Church Choir, former clerk at Dot’s Discount Store in Lewisburg and a former aide at Greenbrier Manor in Fairlea.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husbands, Claude Porterfield and Paul F. Jones.

Surviving are her daughter, Lois J. Mooney of Cumberland, Md.; sons, randy Jones and his wife, Joyce of Mountainlake, Wash., Doug Jones and his wife, Kim of Virginia Beach, Va. and Frank Jones and his wife, Joan, Missionary to Mexico; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and an aunt, Flora Riley of Harold, Ky. and numerous cousins in Kentucky.

Graveside services for Gladys will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at the Morgan Cemetery near Ronceverte with Rev. Andy Howdock officiating. In honor her request there will not be any visitation.
