Roger Dale Cox

HINTON — Roger Dale Cox, 49, of Hinton, passed away on Sunday, August 11th, 2013, at the Summers Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hinton following a long illness.

Born February 2, 1964, in Hinton, Roger was the son of the late Howard R. and Pansy L. Hammonds Cox.

Mr. Cox was a former employee of the Southern Soil Conservation District, and worked for the Maintenance Department of the Summers County Memorial Building. He was of the Baptist Faith.

He is preceded in death by one son, Roger Cox Jr.

He is survived by one daughter, Brandy Michelle Cox of Hinton, brothers James “Buck” Cox of Hinton, Bernard “Duke” Cox of Hinton, Kenneth Cox of Cool Ridge and Gary Cox and wife Deloris of Stafford, Va.; sisters Patricia Meador and husband Donald of Hinton, Alice Adkins of Hinton, and Lola Cox of Hinton. Also surviving are grandchildren Isaiah and Maddox Cox, nephews Steven Cox, Jeff, Don, and Bobby Meador, Randall and Shawn Adkins, Kenny and Tyler Cox, Josh and Zachary Cox, as well as nieces Katrina Deaver, Tasha Cox, and Vicky Lynn Cox.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton, with Pastor Robbie Merritt officiating. Burial will follow at the Farley Cemetery in Pipestem.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

Nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Herbert Franklin Miller Sr.

MEADOW CREEK — Herbert Franklin Miller Sr., 90, of Meadow Creek, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, August 11, 2013, at his home peacefully in his sleep.

Born March 21, 1923, at Lockbridge, he was a son of the late Daniel Franklin and Annie Margaret Bowles Miller.

Herbert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather who enjoyed farming, gardening, hunting and the outdoors. He was a lifelong resident of Summers County and a WWII Army Veteran. Herbert was of the Protestant faith.

Preceded in death by wife, Kathleen Berry Miller; one granddaughter, Amy Allison Miller; one grandson, Daniel Dee Miller; one brother, William Lonzo Miller; and one sister, Lola Mae Williams.

Those left to cherish his memory include five children, Herbert Franklin Miller Jr. and wife Dena of Forest Hill, Ronald Miller of North Carolina, Beverly Bowles and husband Kermit of Lockbridge, Timothy Miller and wife Vicki of Princeton and Clifton Miller and wife Janet of Jumping Branch; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren and one brother, Lester Allen Miller and wife Kitty Lou of Lockbridge.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with David Chrisman officiating. Burial will follow in the Restwood Memorial Gardens near Hinton.

Friends may call from noon until time of services.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Michael Don Richmond

Michael Don Richmond, age 45, of Coal City, WV, passed away suddenly from an apparent heart attack on Saturday, August 10, 2013.

Born on May 29, 1968, in Beckley, he was the son of Rosemary Mann Richmond of Blue Jay, and the late John E. Richmond.

Michael was self-employed as a breeder of animals. He was also an amateur photographer and was an artist. He was a member of the Maxwell Hill Baptist Church, and also attended the Blue Jay United Methodist Church. Michael loved his family, friends, and animals, but not necessarily in that order. He was a friend to everyone. He loved his sons with his whole heart.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John Richmond Jr., and Carl David Richmond, and by a nephew Steven Smith.

Remaining are his sons, Dereck Michael Richmond and Dakota Austin Richmond, and their mother Joy Richmond of Midway, a brother Thomas Richmond of Raleigh, four sisters, Rose Etta Wheeler and her husband Roger of Beaver, Beverly Canterbury and her husband Pat of Daniels, Mary Sweeney and her husband William of Shady Spring, and Deborah Richmond and her husband James of Grandview.

He was the loving uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Paul Stadelman and Rev. David Rumburg officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Friends may visit with the family from 11 a.m. until service time on Tuesday.

Pallbearers will be Rob Runion, Jack Lovell, Alex Walls, Tom Hornsby, Greg Keffer, and Robbie Runion.

LOGAN — Marion Rogers, 86, of Logan, formerly of Holden, passed away Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013.

Carol ‘Susie’ Thompson

On Saturday, August 10th, 2013, one of God’s special angels, Carol “Susie” Thompson, passed away at the Raleigh General Hospital.   

Carol Sue was the second of five children. “Susie,” as she was affectionately known all her life, was born on Nov. 10th, 1943, in Beckley. She was the precious daughter of the late Roy Curtis and Dorothy Mae Smith Thompson Sr.

Susie was one of God’s special children. She has graced this world and the lives of her parents, brother and sisters for 69 years. Her presence has made their lives all the better. As her brother, R.C., stated, “Susie was our ‘Angel Unaware.’”

Susie loved to attend the Memorial Baptist Church when she was able. As she often stated in her own words, “Jesus is God’s Son.” What a sweet spirit our Susie was on this earth. Her mission of love and understanding is now completed.

Left to cherish her memory are her surviving brother and sisters, R.C. Thompson and his wife, Gloria, of Bryant, AK, Mary Lue Dove and her husband, Landy, of Apache Junction, AZ, Dixie Thompson of Beckley, and Delma Lora and her husband, Art, of Salem, OH. Susie was blessed with a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins, who never failed to ask, “And how is Susie?”

On Wednesday, August 14th, at 11 a.m. we will honor the life of this special child of God with a “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastor Paul Zutaut will be officiating. Susie will be laid to rest in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity beside her parents.

Her family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the mortuary and one hour prior to the services on Wednesday.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers are Curt Richards and Don Farley.

POINT PLEASANT — Lenore A. Turner, 82, of Point Pleasant, passed away Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013.

Bradly Joe Williams

Bradly Joe Williams, age 25, of Shady Spring, passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2013, following a sudden illness at the Charleston Area Medical Center General Division.

Born on February 8, 1988, in Beckley, he was the son of Delbert Milton Williams Jr. and Jo Michelle Calacino of Beckley.

Bradly was a coal miner who thoroughly loved his work and who took pride in his job. He was a graduate of Shady Spring High School Class of 2006. He was a member of the Beckley Gun Club. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and motorcycles.

Bradly loved his wife and family dearly.

Survivors include his loving wife, Whitney Ann Wood Williams; three sisters, Chelsa Jo Williams of Beckley, Holly Marie Williams, Savannah Spring Williams, all of Beckley. Grandparents, Joe Calacino Jr., and Melody Calacino, both of Shady Spring; Milton Williams and Margaret Williams, both of Clear Creek. Father-in-law and mother-in-law Greg and Mandy Wood of Cool Ridge. Brother-in-law, Nathan Wood of Daniels, and a sister-in-law, Alaina Wood of Cool Ridge.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Thursday, August 15, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Minister Paul Zutaut officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.
