Clarence ‘Cotton’ Reed
On Monday, February 4th, 2013, our father and grandfather, Clarence “Cotton” Reed, passed away at the Bowers Hospice House, following a short illness. He was in his 86th year.
Known affectionately as Cotton all his life, and a long time resident of Helen, Clarence was born in Fondee, Ky. The youngest of four children, he was born on Sept. 1st, 1926, his parents were the late James and Angeline Davis Reed. A brother, Orbin and a sister, Daisy have preceded him in death. His brother, Luther Reed of Pleasant Hills survives.
A veteran of the U.S. Army with the rank of private, Clarence was a coal miner, retiring from the Maben Energy Preparation Plant in 1989. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing, bird watching, and spending time at his camp on the river.
Clarence was married to the former Alice Mary Dembeck. To this union was born four children, the first, Melvin has died. He leaves his wife, Liz Reed of Pipestem and their children, Rachel and her fiancé Tim Norris, Ivy Sagady and her husband, James, and a great grandchild to Clarence, Vera; second, is Tom Reed and his wife, Lynn of Beckley and their children, Michelle Jones and her husband, Phillip, Scott Reed and his fiance, Melissa Bennett and their great grandchildren to Clarence, Jordan, Taylan, Preslie, Ashton, and Ava; third is Michael Reed and his wife, Doris of Bolt and their children, Jared and Jessica; fourth is Cathy Pauletto of Conway, S.C. and her fiancé, Ronald DiDonato and Cathy’s children, Erica Ford and her husband, John, James and Daniel Pauletto.
On Friday, Feb. 8th at 1 p.m. there will be a “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastor, Dale Birchfield will be officiating. Cotton will be laid to rest beside Alice at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in the Sunset Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday evening at the mortuary and one hour prior to the services on Friday.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
