Louise Catherine Koontz Bittinger

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Louise Catherine Koontz Bittinger, 91, formerly of White Sulphur Springs, died Saturday night, Jan. 26, 2013.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, at the Pentecostal Holiness Church, Ingleside Avenue, White Sulphur Springs. Burial will follow in the Whatcoat Cemetery, Rt. 92N, White Sulphur Springs. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the church.

OAK HILL — Roger White Cummings, 95, of Oak Hill, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013.

Julia Brianne Dorsey

SUMMERSVILLE — Julia Brianne Dorsey, 16-year-old daughter with special needs of William Bradley and Melissa Dawn Patterson Dorsey of Summersville, passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, in the Waters Funeral Chapel at Summersville, with Pastors Dana Gatewood and Lee Boso officiating. Burial will follow in the Walker Memorial Park at Summersville. Friends may call from noon until service time Wednesday at the funeral chapel.

Clarence Lee ‘Buck’ Gibson

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. — Clarence Lee “Buck” Gibson, 91, of Christiansburg, formerly of Lynco, passed away on Friday, January 25, 2013, at his home.

He was born January 11, 1922, in Lorado, W.Va., a son of the late Levi Martin Gibson and the late Alpha Mae Brown Gibson Albright.

He worked for Eastern Associated Coal Corporation for 35 years and was a member of the UMWA local 7604.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his stepfather Tom Albright; four brothers Chester Gibson, Lovell Gibson, Doyle Gibson and Seldon Gibson; a sister Vonda Gibson.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 72 years, Erna Lucille Bishop Gibson; two sons Roger D. (Carol) Gibson of Maben, W.Va., and Donald L. “Goldwater” (Toni) Gibson of Lynco; four daughters Betty (JD) Parris of Glade Spring, Va., Diana (Tim) Donathan of Christiansburg, Va., Debbie K. (Ray Thomas) Toler of Rincon, Ga., and Madonna L. (Rod) Burchett of Stanford, Ky.; a brother Vester (Lorraine) Gibson of Claramore, Okla.; a sister Evelyn (Powell) Lusk of Hartville, Ohio; 11 grandchildren Sonja Seymore, Sherry Blondino, Kimberly Adkins, Erica Frankum, Leslie Powell, Jeremy Toler, Donald Gibson, Michael Gibson, Brittany Gibson, and Gabe Gibson, and Elizabeth Burchett; 15 great-grandchildren Clay and Zane Seymore, Zak Blankenship, Jacob Blondino, Tyler and Tanner Adkins, Zachary Frankum, Heather Rouse, Hunter Powell, Eli and Abe Toler, Levi and Jordan Gibson, Rileigh Gibson and Makilah New; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at the Bright Prospect Missionary Baptist Church, with Rev. Earl Brewer and Bro. Jimmy Gibson officiating. Buck will be laid to rest in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, W.Va.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at the church.

Grandsons and great grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Louresa M. ‘Retha’ Griffin

Louresa M. “Retha” Griffin, 74, of Beckley, died Thursday, January 24, 2013.

Born May 17, 1938, in Slab Fork, she was the daughter of the late William and Ida Mae Motley Yeager.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles (Pops) Griffin; brothers, William (June) Yeager, Joe Neal and Dolphus Edwards; and sister, Lillian Fuller.

A graduate of Stratton High School, Retha was briefly employed at Beckley Manufacturing in Beckley. She left her position there to become the primary caregiver of her brother, June. Retha was an active member of New Hope Primitive Baptist.

Left to cherish her memories are sons, Jerry (Terri) Brown of Ellenwood, Ga., and Henry (Tanya Timbers) Clark of Beckley; daughter, Melanie (Ernie Nabors) Berry of Beckley; grandchildren, Shawn of Houston, Texas, Tashaira (Buffy), Tiziana (Lucy) and Jasmine, all of Beckley, and Casey of Ellenwood, Ga.; sisters, Fannie Mae Gordon of Newark, N.J., and Mabel Beckom of East Orange, N.J.; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 12 noon on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at Welcome Baptist Church, 206 8th Street, Beckley, with Rev. David Allen officiating. Interment will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Loraine Lincoln Jones Sr.

Mr. Loraine Lincoln Jones Sr., 85, of Beckley, died Wednesday, January 23, 2013, in Raleigh General Hospital, after a short illness.

Born August 19, 1927, in Covington, Va., he was the son of the late Thomas and Bessie Lee Cabell Jones.

He was a member and Deacon of St. Matthew AME Church, where he was on the Steward Board. He was also a metal sorter at Raleigh Junk Company for 44 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Juanita J. Edwards Jones; daughter, Carolyn Moore; son Lorraine Jones Jr.; brothers, Thomas Jones Jr., Paul, Augustus, William, Henry, Steve, Clinton, Cornelius, and Lawrence Jones; and sisters, Francis Jones, Oralee Mackins, Mattie Walters and Lucy Borders; two grandchildren, Arnell Peoples and Kenneth Wilson Jr.

Left to cherish memories are sons, Charles and Brian; daughter Karen (James) McCray, all of Beckley; sister, Patricia Irving of Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren, Charles Moore Jr. of Beckley, Carlos and Sybil Rhodes of Roanoke, Va., Ceceila Stewart of Columbus, Ohio, Derrick Herring, Bryant “K.J.” Jones, Braxton Swafford of Beckley; a special granddaughter Ariel Payne; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Kenneth Borders of Beckley, and Charles Jones of Dayton, Ohio; and special recognition to Mr. And Mrs. Jimmie C. Sheppard.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at St. Matthew AME Church, 103 Mills St., Beckley, with Rev. Deborah Smoot officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Phillip ‘John’  Lawless

GREEN VALLEY — Phillip “John” Lawless of Green Valley, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2013, at his home.

Born April 30, 1933, at Hemphill, W.Va., son of Pearl Jane Dove Lawless and the late Phillip “Buster” Lawless.

John attended Welch High School and was an excellent softball pitcher. He joined the United States Marine Corps and served for four years. After returning he was employed at Nasau Coal Blackwolf and Gary. He also worked as Fire Boss for Cannelton Coal Company in Welch. Later he enjoyed working on the farm in Princeton.

In addition to his Father, he was preceded in death by his son, John Houston Lawless, and one brother, Robert “Bob” Lawless.

Along with his Mother left to cherish his memory are his wife of 54 years, Lois M. Cox Lawless, of the home; two sons, Clovis B. Lawless and wife Lisa of Shady Spring, Phillip Joe Lawless of Bluefield, W.Va.; one daughter, Donna Gadd and husband Cy of Bluefield, W.Va.; three brothers, James Lawless and wife Violet of Pennsylvania, Michael Joe Lawless and wife Lana of Tennessee, David Lawless of Princeton; two sisters, Margaret McCormick and Deborah Lawless Cole, both of Princeton; nine grandchildren which he loved very much Jessie, Dustin, Tesla, Chris, Cody, Stormy, Mikie, Brennan, and Camryn and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell, W.Va., with Rev. Wallace Smith officiating the service. Burial will follow at Monte Vista Cemetery in Bluefield. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Loving mother, wife, daughter and friend, Patty Marie Reed went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 26, 2013.

Born November 28, 1974, she was a daughter of Kenny and Gail Godbey Cline.

Patty was a graduate of Independence High School and attended the Church of God.

Vernon W. Sears

Our beloved Vernon Winifred Sears, 69, of Fayetteville, W.Va., went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 26, 2013, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa., after a hard-fought battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Born April 18, 1943, at Thurmond, W.Va., he was the son of the late Basil and Jennie Boley Sears.

Mr. Sears lived in Hopewell, Va., for 35 years and retired after 25 years service with Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceutical of Petersburg, Va.

Vernon was a member of the Grace Baptist Church of Fayetteville. He loved cooking for his family and friends especially cookouts. He was a loyal WVU football fan.

He enjoyed helping out at his family's business, Campbell Tile, Inc., of Oak Hill.

His first wife of 39 years, Mary Catherine Bragg Sears, a brother, Keith Sears, sister, Charlene Moses, and great-nephew, Eric Campbell, preceded him in death.

Vernon is survived by his loving family which include his wife of six years, Emilie J. Sears, and her children, Laurie Zorio, Shelley Aicher and Ray Funk, all of Fayetteville, and Gene Funk of Tallmage, Ohio, sister, Macil Campbell of Hilltop, and three nephews, Elmer “Eddie” Campbell and wife, Delora, and Keith Campbell and wife, Donna Kay, all of Hilltop, and Basil Campbell and wife, Lesia, of Lewisburg.

He is also survived by and will be deeply missed by great-nieces, Denise Hambrick and husband, Eddie, Donna Mae Ortiz and husband, Craig, and MaKayla Snyder and husband, Dwayne, and great-nephew, Ryan Campbell, and their families as well as a host of extended family and loving friends.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Grace Baptist Church in Fayetteville, with Pastor Delbert Walker officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Visitation will be held at Grace Baptist Church, Fayetteville, on Tuesday, January 29, 2013, from 7 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Eddie Hambrick, Ryan Campbell, Gene Funk, Craig Ortiz, Ray Funk and John Tremblay will serve as pallbearers.

Isaiah ‘Zay’ Shivers

Mr. Isaiah “Zay” Shivers, 20, of Beckley, died Thursday, January 24, 2013, at the Doug and Lucy Bowers Hospice House.

Born June 8, 1992, he was the son of Sean Christopher Shivers and Kimberly Michelle Jackson Shivers of Beckley.

He was preceded in death by maternal great-grandmothers Mary “Maggie” Mallory and Catherine Jackson; maternal great-grandfather Herman H. Mallory; maternal grandfather Nathaniel Jackson; paternal great-grandmother Julia Nelson and uncle William “Bro” Nelson.

Those left to cherish his memories are his children, Xaveair Christopher Tay’Sean Shivers of Oak Hill and Zy’Airah Nevaeh Austin of Beckley; brother, Dezmahn Shivers of Beckley, and sister Chante Shivers of Beckley and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be at 12 noon Thursday, January 31, 2013, at Heart of God Ministries, 1703 So. Kanawha St., Beckley, with Bishop Bob Tunstalle officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Lucille Beverly Sizemore Chambers Wheeler

As the sun came up on her favorite day of the week, Ida Lucille Beverly Sizemore Chambers Wheeler went to sing in God’s Holy Choir on Sunday, January 27, 2013.  

Lucille was born on December 8, 1921, to the Rev. Edgar and Buna Brewster Beverly of Indian Creek, W.Va.

Preceding her in death was her first husband and father of her children, Thomas E. Sizemore. After his passing she married Lewis Chambers and then George Wheeler. A son, Douglas Edward Sizemore; granddaughter, Karen Marie Sizemore; grandson, Larry Ray Shields; brother, Fred Edward Beverly; adopted sister, Elsie St Clair and her husband, Arthur St Clair; and stepgrandchild, Tim Stewart, also preceded her in death.

Lucille was the pastor for many years of the Indian Creek Community Church on the Welch-Pineville Road. She loved to sing, play the piano and being with people. She was employed for a short time at Buddy’s Discount in Pineville. She lived in Welch, W.Va., and then moved to Beaver, to be near her daughter. She was attending Beaver United Methodist Church at the time of her death.

Loved ones that will miss their Mom and MawMaw are her daughter, Dorisann Sullivan and husband Glen of Beaver; son, Thomas E. Sizemore and wife Kathy of South Pasadena, Fla.; grandchildren, Rhonda Shields Breen and husband Mike of Tampa, Fla., Dana Shields Thomas and husband Paul of Fayetteville, N.C., Tennis Randall Shields and Freda Kay of Southaven, Miss., Greg Sizemore of Germany, Sonya Sizemore Techton and husband Sam of Wesley Chapel, Fla., and Jeremy, Greg and Amanda Stewart who would visit with Lucille every chance they had; great-grandchildren, Melissa Proctor (Dustin) of Ala., Thomas Shields (Melissa) of Welch, W.Va., William Jones of Fayetteville, N.C., Joseph Techton (Adrianne) of Fla., Megan Techton of Fla., Amanda and Eleanor Sizemore of Va., Amber Sorah of Miss.; great-great-grandchildren, Jameson, Conner and Violet, children of Melissa, Jacob, son of William and Charlotte, daughter of Joseph; sister, Kitty Campbell and Howard of Ohio; brother, Lyndal Beverly of Baileysville, W.Va., Marsha Wheeler and Barney of Princeton; a friend that was like a daughter to her, Mrs. Deloris Bowles and Don of Welch-Pineville Road.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, where a scripture prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. conducted by Pastor Paul Stadelman. Funeral services will be 12 noon Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at Indian Creek Community Church on the Welch–Pineville Road, with Pastor Scott Cline and Bill Rose officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens at Matheny.
