Nina Price Ballard

Nina Price Ballard, 89 years of age, of Dry Creek, W.Va., passed away, Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at the home of the her daughter.

She is survived by her daughter Frances and son-in-law, Wendell of Arnett, and her son, Jimmy and daughter-in-law, Faye of Ashland, Ohio. She had six brothers, one sister, now survived by brothers, Scott and Alfred and a sister, Joy. She has many grandchildren as well.

She loved involvement in the church and did until she was no longer able. She had a long, prosperous life and will be sadly missed.  

The family would like to offer a special thanks to Hospice.

Service will be noon Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, at Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. Larry Kinder officiating. Singer will be Judy Pettry.

Burial will follow in Workman’s Cemetery, Bald Knob.

Friends may call two hours prior to the service Thursday at the funeral home.

Harry Cofer ‘OB’ Beale

RAINELLE — Harry Cofer “OB” Beale, 75, passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at Cabell Huntington Hospital of Huntington, W.Va., following a long illness.

Born Jan. 2, 1938, at Barton, W.Va., he was the son of the late Clarence H. and Mildred M. Hamon Beale.

Harry was a member of Bascom United Methodist Church of Rupert, and also attended the Bellwood Baptist Church. He was a retired owner and salesman of mobile homes. Harry “OB” Beale was the driving force and glue that sustained our family, and he will be greatly missed, but never forgotten...

Survivors include his companion, Mary Ramsey of Rainelle; extended family, Tiffany, Candice, D.J., Kaleigh, Madison, Jackson, and Delvira, all of Rainelle; a sister, Judy Fato (Frank) of Buchannon; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; great-great nieces and nephews, numerous cousins, many, many friends.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel of Rainelle, with Pastor John Wyatt officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call one-half hour prior to the service (12:30 to 1 p.m.) at the funeral home.

FAYETTEVILLE — Irene Beni, 93, of Fayetteville, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, surrounded by family.

Janet Sue Green

RUPERT — Janet Sue Green, 70, of Rupert, passed away on Monday, January 14 in Fairlea.

Born April 15, 1942 at Epperly Hill, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Elbert and Edna Miller Wall.

Janet was a homemaker. She loved going to church, spending time with her church family, music and singing in church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Wall and a sister Mary Hite.

Janet is survived by her husband, Reed MacArthur Green, Sr.; sons, Reed Green, Jr. and his wife Tammie of Beckley, Elbert Green of Bolt, WV, Steven Green and wife Dawn of Winchester, Va., Michael Green and wife Angie of Crab Orchard; grandchildren, David, Brandon, Jacob, Michael Jr., Tyler, and Raina; great-grandchildren, Isabella, Olivia and Josiah; brothers, Larry Wall and wife Judy of Beckley, David Wall and wife Deborah of Davis Creek; sisters, Linda Austin and husband Jim of Mead, W.Va., Julie Bowens and husband Jackie of Helen; special sister and brother in law, Ann and Billy Joe Farruggia as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 12 p.m. Thursday, January 17, 2013, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Hibby Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.  Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to service.

Steve Grzyb, 93, of Beaver, formerly of Oak Hill, died on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Graveside rites and committal services will be Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at 2:15 p.m. at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill with Chaplin Bryan Knight WVANG officiating and with military graveside rites by Oak Hill VFW Post #3110. Burial will be follow.

Rev. Mary Margie Morgan Hatfield

Rev. Mary Margie Morgan Hatfield, 77, of Pemberton, our precious angel went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 13, 2013, at her home following a long illness.

She was born November 2, 1935 in Guyan, W.Va., to the late William Connie and Ada Jane Yates Morgan.

Mary was an ordained minister through the United Christian Ministerial Association.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a son in law Herman West.

Those left to cherish her are her loving husband of 61 years and 10 months French Hatfield; three sons Irving (Sandi) Hatfield, Joseph (Debbie) Hatfield, and Tony (Sandy) Hatfield; four daughters Sharon (Jimmy) Sadler, Karen (Mark) Stiefer, Beth West, Melissa White and companion Jackie Miller; a special grandson Mickey Udy who resides at the home and was greatly involved with her care; 30 grandchildren; 42 great grandchildren; and eight great great grandchildren, and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, January 17, 2013, at Grace and Truth Ministries, on Coal City Road with Bro. Jeff Sadler and Bro. Bill Spencer officiating. She will be laid to rest in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at the church.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Rickey Lee Lester

JUSTICE — Rickey Lee “Monster Pig” Lester, 56,  died Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at Select Specialty Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, Charleston.

Service will be Saturday, Jan. 19 at 1 p.m. at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, Gilbert, with the Rev. Jonas Trent and the Rev. James Cline officiating. Burial will follow at Dave and Lizzie Lester Family Cemetery.

Margaret ‘Ann’ Mills McPherson

Margaret “Ann” Mills McPherson, 71, of Beckley, passed away Sunday, January 13, 2013, following a long illness.

Born December 10, 1941 at Soak Creek, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Clayton Lonzo and Mozetta Richardson Mills.

Ann was a former beautician and also a realtor for Century 21-First Choice. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Beckley and also attended Freedom Ministries in Beaver. She was a lifelong resident of Beckley. Ann’s greatest joy, interest and hobby were her children and grandchildren.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Ray McPherson and a brother, Jack Mills.

She is survived by daughters, Kim Jesse and husband David and Michelle Lester of Beckley; son, Shane McPherson and wife Chandra of Beckley; grandchildren, Derrick Tyree, Justin (J.K.) Tyree, Zane Lester and Aiden McPherson, all of Beckley, Brandon Jesse and Ryan Jesse of Glen White; great-grandchildren, Lilli Tyree, Levi Jesse, Jordan Jesse and Dawson Jesse; brothers, David Mills of Soak Creek and Jimmy Mills and wife Genevieve of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; niece, Renee Criner  of Charleston, W.Va.; and nephews, Ken Mills of Charleston, Dean Mills of Soak Creek and C.J. Mills of Bensalem, Pa.

Per the wishes of Ann, she was laid to rest beside of her beloved husband, Bobby Ray McPherson in a private ceremony at Sunset Memorial Park on Tuesday, January 15 attended only by her children and grandchildren.

In addition Ann requested there will be no public viewing, however, there will be a public celebration service of her life on Thursday, January 17, 2013  at 6 p.m. at Freedom Ministries located in Beaver at 806 Grandview Road with pastor Philip Farrington officiating.

James ‘Jim’ William Meade Sr.

On Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, our most cherished James “Jim” William Meade Sr. passed away in his 76th year.

Known affectionately as “Jim,” James was born in Beckley on Dec. 14, 1936; he was the son of the Roy and Janet Meade.

James loved hunting, farming and tending his cattle. He worked as a carpenter .

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne Pack Meade.

James leaves to cherish his memory his loving children, James Meade Jr., Rhonda Meade, Deloris Taylor and her husband, Charles, and John Meade all of Beckley; he was the proud grandfather of three grandchildren, Jesse Meade, Christopher Meade, and Matthew Meade all of Beckley.

On Thursday, Jan. 17, at 1 p.m., we will remember the life of James William Meade with a “Service of Remembrance” in the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Paul Zutaut officiating. James will be laid to rest in the Meade Family Cemetery on Sweeneysburg Road.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Freddie F. Miller

GREENVILLE — Freddie F. Miller, 69, of Hans Creek Road, passed away, Sunday January 13, 2013, at Carilion Giles Community Hospital, Pearisburg, Va.

Born April 23, 1943 in Monroe County, he was the son of the late Ross E. and Beulah Miller.

Freddie had worked as a carpenter and painter. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren at Lindside, W.Va., and attended the First Missionary Baptist Church of Ballard.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Leroy, Lonnie and Marvin Miller, one sister, Euna Lester and a stepson, Charles Trent.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Ann Allen Miller, two stepsons, Dale and Bart Trent, both of Hans Creek; one stepdaughter, Josie Andersen of Blue Lick; one brother, Henry “Ray” Miller of Beckley; six sisters, Awilda Adkins of Danville, Va., Barbara Shaver of Hans Creek, Ruth Pence of Ballard, Mary Ellen Ballard of Ashland, Ky., Helen Faye Muska of Hans Creek, and Martha Kalin of Spotswood, N.J. and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 12 p.m.  Thursday, January 17, 2013, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Steve Howdock officiating. Burial will follow at the Ellison Cemetery, Greenville.  Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of the services at the funeral home on Thursday.

NETTIE — Kimberly Jean Newman, 43, died Monday, January 14, 2013.

Mary Christlean Taylor Onion

Mary Christlean Taylor Onion, 92, of Beckley, fell sweetly asleep in the Lord, Friday, January 11, 2013.  

Born August 24, 1920, in Sylvia, W.Va., daughter of the late Samuel B. and Arena K. Williams Taylor. Besides her parents, she was preceded by her husband, Cephas Hugo Onion; son, Thomas N. Cox Jr.; five sisters and three brothers.

A 1938 graduate of Stratton High School, she was also an alumna of the former Beckley College. She was employed at BARH, Mountaineer Clinic, Sears and Roebuck, and served in various assignments through the Title V and Green Thumb Programs.

For more than 65 years, she was a dedicated member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Beckley, serving as a member of the Sanctuary Choir, Senior Usher Board, Hospitality Committee, Service Guild, Missionary Society, weekly Adult Bible Class and Prayer Group, and Adult Sunday School Class; also a former member of the Friendly Few Club, Order of Eastern Star AF&AM, the Raleigh County NAACP, and was a Campaign Collector for the March of Dimes.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter Gwendolyn Dianne (Rev. Louis E. Jr.) Ridgley, of Uniontown, Pa.; five grandchildren; one foster grandson; eight great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.  

Services will be noon on Friday, January 18, 2013 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 770 So. Fayette St., Beckley. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call two hours prior to the service at the church.

Joseph Michael Ruszkoski

Joseph Michael Ruszkoski, 58, of Crab Orchard, passed away on Monday, January 14, 2013 in Beckley.

Born July 19, 1954, he was the son of the late Joseph Walter and Mary Sovak Ruszkoski. Joseph enjoyed listening to his records, singing and had an overall joy for music.

Those left to cherish his memory are his sister, Joann Conner and husband Fred; nephews, Clint Conner, Andrew Conner and his wife Krissy, John Conner and his wife Nicole and family and Shawn Conner and his family as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 17, from 6 to 8pm at the Calfee Funeral Chapel. A burial will follow at a later date in Round Hill Cemetery in Pennsylvania.

JUSTICE —  H. Patricia Simon, of Justice Addition, passed away Monday, January 14, 2013.

Carl Eugene Vass

Carl Eugene Vass, 83, of Rhodell, passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013. Born Nov. 21, 1929, he was a son of the late William and Mary Vass.

Carl enjoyed fishing and working with his hands and making things. He was employed as a laborer for the railroad for 29 years. He attended the Rhodell Church of God.

In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his brothers, William “Junior,” Denzil; sister, Mamie McGuffin; son, William Joseph Vass.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving  wife of 63 years, Frances Vass of Rhodell; son, Carl Eugene Vass II  and wife Nancy of Elyria, Ohio, Dewayne Vass and fiancée Dana Deskins of Princeton; daughter, Melissa Vass of Rhodell; grandson, Carl J. Vass of Elyria, Ohio; sisters, Margie Leatherman of S.C. and Carolyn Nicholas of Oak Hill; and his beloved dog, Gracie.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley with Pastor Gary Eskins officiating. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Following the services he will be laid to rest  at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
