Lowell Thomas Atha
SANDLICK — Lowell Thomas Atha, 69 of Sand-lick, WV, went to be with the Lord on January 11, 2013.
Born Nov. 1, 1943, he was the son of the late Walter and Edith Atha of Sandlick. He was a member and Deacon of Mattsville Community Church. He was formerly employed at Fredrick Engineering and Oscar Vecellio.
Survivors include his wife Georgia Atha, and his two daughters, Melissa Athey and husband Robert Athey of Glen Daniel, WV, and Vickie England and husband Aaron England of Mullens, WV. He was a loving grandfather to eight grandchildren, Stacey Tolliver and husband Kenneth, Robert Lowell, April and Jessica Athey, Zane Thomas, Sydney, Zoe and Ace England, and two great-grandchildren Keith Tolliver and Nicole Cantley.
Pallbearers will be Terry and Darrin Dillon, Brian and Kevin Lovely and Kenneth and Ronnie Dillon.
Funeral Service will be conducted on Monday, January 14, 2013, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Tim Vaughn and Rev. Aaron England officiating. Family will receive friends from noon until time of service. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.

Betty Jo Ballard
Betty Jo Ballard, 82, died on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, in Charlotte, NC, surrounded by her loving family. She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all who new her.
She was born on October 11, 1930, in Beckley, WV, one of nine children born to the late Terry Ervin Whittaker and Cecil Wheeler Whittaker. She was a graduate of Stoco High School, Coal City, WV, and was a majorette. She was active in her children’s lives as a Girl Scout leader and Boy Scout leader. She was a member of United Methodist Temple for many years and was a member of Cross Point Church in her later years. Betty worked for King Tut’s Drive-in as a cook, the Pastry Shop, Beckley Insulation, and leased the restaurant at Bowl Wick Bowling Alleys for several years.
Betty was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 34 years, Otis Lee Ballard, her son Ronald Otis Ballard, her brother J.B. Whittaker, and her sisters, Nadine Thompson, Eva June King, Audrey Thompson, Joyce Whittaker, and Daphne Whittaker.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Ginger Lee George-Lukse and her husband Michael J. Lukse, of Charlotte, NC, her daughter Cathy Jo Allen, of Lynchburg, VA, her sisters, Francis Smith of Beckley, WV, and Charlotte Farley and her husband Ronald Farley of Shawsville, Va. She is survived by her grandchildren, Ginger Lee Steele of Lynchburg, VA, Brad Allen George of Charlotte, NC, Jennifer Allen of Bedford, VA, and Brian Patrick Allen of Mableton, GA, and her great-grandchildren, Reagan Steele, Dylan Allen, Devan Allen, and Layah Calloway.
Betty was also preceded in death by her husband, Otis Lee Ballard, her son Ronald Otis Ballard, her brother J.B. Whittaker, and her sisters, Nadine Thompson, Eva June King, Audrey Thompson, Joyce Whittaker, and Daphne Whittaker.
Betty will be dearly missed on this earth but Heaven will most certainly have a new star.
Visitation will be on Saturday, January 19, 2013, at the Rose & Quesenberry Funeral Home, 1901 S. Kanawha St., Beckley, WV, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. with a short service. A private interment with family will be at Sunset Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Lupus Foundation, or the Arthritis Foundation, or, due to her love of animals, the Raleigh County Humane Society.
