Gina Adkins

OAK HILL — Gina Ann Adkins, 39, of Oak Hill, passed away Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013.

A private service will be held and she will be cremated. Burial will be in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, at a later date.

Joyce Hope Bartgis

HINTON — Joyce Hope Bartgis, 84, of 300 Miller Avenue, Hinton, died at 7:52 p.m. Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Harmony House in Lerona, after a long illness.

Born July 21, 1928, in Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Frank Etley and Willie Virginia Perdue Mann.

Mrs. Bartgis was a graduate of Hinton High School. She was a former employee of the First National Bank of Hinton and was a devoted Christian wife and mother who enjoyed her grandchildren and was an avid shopper. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Hinton, and a member of the Red Hat Society. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was preceded in death by two grandsons, Shannon Bartgis and Richard Bennett. She was also preceded in death by seven brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include her loving husband of 64 years, Kenton T. “Ted” Bartgis; two sons, J. Kent Bartgis and wife Lou of Hinton and M. Keith Bartgis and wife Laurie of Charlotte, NC, and one daughter, Loue Ann Bennett and husband Robert of Hinton; 10 grandchildren, Bryen Bartgis and wife Lisa, Kari Vickers and husband Chris, Alissa Grindstaff, Natalie Weaver and husband Matt, Michael Bartgis, Leslie Wooten, Scott Wooten and wife Shannon, Hope Jones and husband Brent, Daniel Halloran and wife Karen and Robert Bennett Jr. and wife Kelly; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, January 13, 2013, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastors Butch Honaker and Ronald Cobb officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Burial Park in Hinton. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men’s Bible class of First Baptist Church, Charlie Stokes and Bud Johnson.

NARROWS, Va. — Anna Sue Boothe, 71, of Narrows, passed away Friday, Jan. 11, 2013.

Dennis Bowles

LERONA — Dennis Bowles, 64, of Lerona, left this life and entered into eternal rest with his heavenly father, Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Heartland of Beckley, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born January 16, 1948, at Sandstone, he was a son of the late Zory and Ida Pearl Bowles.

Dennis was a kind-hearted simple man who would help anyone. He was formerly employed by Cole Nursery as a foreman with 45 plus years of service, a job he loved. Dennis also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, hunting, fishing, camping and the outdoors.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Bowles.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 26 years, Deborah L. Hines Bowles at home; one son, Larry Bowles and wife Mendy of Lerona; three grandchildren, Bradley, Ally and Coy Bowles of Lerona; and one sister, Irene Harris of Chandler, Ariz.

A gathering of friends and family will be held Monday, January 14, 2013, at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral parlors. At Dennis’s request the body has been cremated.

Barbara Ann Field Brown, 84, of Beckley, passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013.

Heidi Marie Peterson Brown

Heidi Marie Peterson Brown, 33, of Beckley, died Wednesday, January 9, 2013.

She was born October 12, 1979, in Royal Oak, Mich., to J. Samuel and Dee Peterson.

As a young child of only two years old she accepted the Lord as her Savior and lived her whole life as a follower of Jesus. She spent most of her childhood years in Aurora, CO, until moving to Beckley in 1995.

Heidi graduated Summa Cum Laude from Lee University with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Communications with a specialty in Media Writing. While at Lee she met and married Jason Michael Brown in 2001. Heidi and Jason welcomed their first child Joshua Michael in 2002 followed by Caleb Samuel in 2004, Ainsley Catherine Grace in 2005, and Madelyn Ainsley in 2006.

Heidi was an avid reader and writer contributing articles to West Virginia South and Focus on the Family Clubhouse Kids, as well as several other newsletters, blogs, and publications. She had a unique writing style that was eloquent yet practical; her writing came from a very personal place. Everyone who knew Heidi was touched by her servant’s heart. She was constantly aware of others’ needs and considered them above her own. Her servant’s heart was never more evident than with her children. She devoted her life to caring for them and teaching them to love the Lord. They are her legacy. She was a member of Faith Community Church, and was actively involved in numerous ministries serving wherever there was a need.

Heidi was preceded in death by paternal grandparents Harold and Aldyth Peterson, maternal grandfather Everett England, and her infant daughter Ainsley Catherine Grace.

In addition to her parents, husband, and children, those who remain to be inspired by her memory are sisters and brothers-in-law Michelle and Jason Lowe and Cara and Paul Rankin of Beckley, nephews and nieces Noah, Benjamin, and Kate Lowe and Callie and Eden Rankin, and maternal grandmother Jean England of Huber Heights, Ohio, along with numerous extended family and friends.

Services will be held at the Beckley Convention Center/Faith Community Church on Sunday, January 13, 2013, with visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. and a celebration of her life at 4 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Bernhardt, Brandon Bennett, Brian Board, Arnie Brown, Craig Frazier, Derrick Spell, Brandon Spell, and Paul Wright. Honorary pallbearers are Kelly Housh, Dr. Matthew Melton, Darren Peterson, Jeremy Uptegrove.

Marjorie Louise Cozart

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — Marjorie Louise Cozart, 85, of Bluefield, died Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Born June 5, 1927, in Hot Coal, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Frank Chapman Bolton and Florence Hinchee Bolton Bailey.

Mrs. Cozart was a graduate of Shady Spring High School and earned her teaching credentials at Beckley College. She taught at Acord Mountain School. She attended Pine Grove Baptist Church and Coal Marsh Baptist Church, and she loved her Lord and family. She loved gardening, flowers and canning.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her former husband, Donald Cozart; son, David Cozart; and sister, Toby Redden.

Survivors include her daughter, Evonda Archer and husband Bill of Bluefield; daughter-in-law, Donna Short of Maryland; siblings, Emogene Lilly of North Ridgeville, Ohio, Fred Bailey and wife Maxine of Mississippi, Bill Bailey and wife Betty of North Ridgeville, Ohio, Herbert Bailey and wife Juanita of Maryland, Frank Bailey and wife Joy of Oak Hill, and Robert Bailey and wife Alona of North Carolina; brother-in-law, Danny Redden of Beckley; sister-in-law, Virginia Cozart of Virginia; five grandchildren, Dannie Morgan and wife Ann, Kathy Harmony and husband Ebert, Karon Davis and husband Tom, Kevin Cozart and wife Audra, and Kandy Schisler and husband Nicholas; nine great-grandchildren, Seth, Kassia, Tiffany, Eric, Madelyn, Owen, Karissa, Nicholas, and Dominique; numerous nieces and nephews; and special niece, Bette Davis and husband Jack who were very dear to her.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until the service hour.

Harold Brady Lilly

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Harold Brady Lilly, 67, of Greensboro, formerly of Odd, passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at the Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro.

Born on April 27, 1945, at Odd, W.Va., he was the son of the late Willard Lilly and Rachel Meadows Lilly.

Mr. Lilly was a general laborer, and was of the Pentecostal faith. He had made his home in Greensboro for the past 13 years.

Those surviving include his wife Delores Bailey Lilly; four children, Harold B. Lilly Jr. of Greensboro, Willard Lilly and his wife Julia of Michigan, Mike Cox and his wife Amber of Beaver, and Angela McKenney and her husband Wayne of Greensboro; two brothers, Roger Lilly of Jonben, and Carlos Lilly of Beckley; six sisters, Hester Bolen of Pemberton, Nellie Lentz of Illinois, Kathy Lopez of Illinois, Frances Blevins of Rhodell, Melanie Tabb of Beckley, and Helen Vaught of Crab Orchard; and six grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at 2 p.m. (today) with Rev. Phillip Farrington officiating. Burial will follow at the House of Prayer Cemetery at Mitchell’s Ridge.

Helen Claytor Massie

Helen Claytor Massie, 97, of Daniels, passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at the home of her grandson at Shady Spring.

Born on January 5, 1916, at Ansted, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Hollie Claytor and Alice Ferguson Claytor.

Mrs. Massie was a homemaker, and was of the Baptist faith. She had made her home at Daniels for the past 20 years, having lived most of her life at Shady Spring.

Mrs. Massie was preceded in death by her husband, Lacy Oral “Fuzzie” Massie, by a brother Alvin Claytor, and by sisters Irene Carte, Ruth Gray, and Mary Coleman.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her son, Jack Massie of Daniels, with whom they shared their home; two sisters, Virginia “Tip” Claytor of Beaver, and Catherine “Cab” Claytor of Daniels; a grandson, Robert Massie and his fiancée Jodie Pollock of Shady Spring, and two great-grandchildren, Raysha Massie and Lexie Powell, both of Shady Spring.

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Helen Claytor Massie on Monday, January 14, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel, with the Rev. Don Kelly officiating. Burial with follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, W.Va.

OAK HILL — Surrounded by his family, our loving husband, father and grandfather, Gene Edward Nicholas, 74, of Oak Hill, died on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Hilltop Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Hilltop, W.Va.

Born September 2, 1938, at Kilsyth, W.Va., he was the son of the late Alfred William and Lorena Craddock Nicholas.

Gene loved hunting and fishing and had an interest in trains.

Survivors include wife, Carolyn Yvonne Vass Nicholas, one daughter, Alisa Nicholas of Oak Hill, and two sisters, Pearl Burgess of Oak Hill and Norma Tyler of Sandston, Va.

He is also survived by four grandchildren, Christina Ayers, Tamara Chittum and husband, Joel, Erica Ayers and Bryan Bryant.

Funeral services will be on Sunday, January 13, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with Pastor Bill McClung officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Dallas L. Peters

Dallas L. Peters, 89, of Beckley, passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2013.

Born May 3, 1923, in Bald Knob, W.Va., he was the son of the late Early and Dona Green Peters.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dean and Arlie Peters; sister, Eileen Bradford; granddaughter, Lisa Eason; and son-in-law, Deano Jones, a UBB miner of Beckley.

Dallas was a retired coal miner having worked 40 years for Eastern Coal. He attended the Open Door Church in Shady Spring, was a 63-year member of the Masonic Lodge O’Dell #115 in Madison, WV, Scottish Rite Bodies. Dallas was an avid fisherman.

Dallas is survived by his wife Alice of 39 years; four daughters, Lesia Workman of Wharton, W.Va., Gina Jones of Beckley, Donna Craft and husband Melvin of Gallipolis, Ohio, and Karen Steel of Miliam, Mich.; one son, Loren Peters and wife Linda of Sacramento, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Kaitlen Vint, Kyle Dean Jones, J.D. and Chris Craft, Katrina Hill, Jason Peters, Jessica Belding and Kim and Robyn Piach; 14 great-grandchildren, four stepchildren; numerous stepgrandchildren whom he loved dearly; sisters, Opal Pennington of Wharton, Lois Brewer of Alum Creek, W.Va., Ivy Workman of Marysville, W.Va.; brothers, Arnie Peters of Clarksville, Ind., and Denzel Peters of Lancaster, Ohio. Dallas is also survived by his granddog, Maddi.

Alice, Lesia and Gina would like to thank his friends for all of the memories and fishing adventures.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, January 14, 2013, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Don Kelly officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 12 noon until time of service.

Philip Todd Ridenour

HICO — Philip Todd Ridenour, 43, of Hico, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, January 8, 2013, in Charleston, W.Va.

Todd was born March 6, 1969, in Montgomery. Welcoming Todd to his heavenly home are brother Gary Alan Massey and grandparents HV Peck and Mary Ridenour and John Cooper.

You know you are in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams. Dreams became reality when Todd met the love of his life Tammy Isaacs Ridenour. They married in October 2010. Todd and Tammy shared a love that comes once in a lifetime.

My son, never forget that I love you. Life is filled with hard times and good times. Learn from everything you can. Be the man I know that you can be. Todd was adored by his loving parents Gary and Becky Cooper Massey of Kimberly and Philip and Dorrie Ridenour of Cape Coral, Florida.

Any man can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad. Todd was a wonderful and loving father to daughter Jessica Ridenour of Beckley and granddaughter Karsyn Bird, and son Ryan Isaacs of Hico.

“Sometimes having a brother is even better than having a super hero.” Todd was a superhero in the eyes of his loving sister, Staci and husband Greg Boggs of Victor, brother Shane Ridenour and his wife Lesley of Winfield, brother Dale Massey and his wife Brandy of Trussville, Alabama.

Todd was the most fun and awesome “Uncle Todd” to Cameron, Griffin, Victoria Boggs. Nicolas and Nathanael Ridenour, Hannah and Ally Massey, Logan and Connor Massey, Christian and Patience Isaacs, Cyrus, Brody, Ryleigh and Kyleigh Jackson. Savannah and Michael Keeney.

Others left to cherish his memory are his grandmother Erma Grose of Smithers, mother and father-in-law Pat and Barbara Isaacs of Hico, and sisters-in-law Tara Isaacs Jackson, Staci Kenney and Stephanie Isaacs of Hico. Many loving uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

Todd was a 1987 graduate of Valley High School in Smithers, where he played football. He was an avid outdoorsman, and he loved to hunt and fish with his brothers, nephews and friends. He enjoyed taking long rides on a Harley on a sunny day. He was a die-hard Kansas City Chiefs fan, and a Ford-Roush racing fan. He was a licensed master electrician employed by Raleigh Mine Supply.

A celebration of Todd’s life will be 2 p.m. Sunday, January 13, 2013, at Sunday Road Baptist Church in Hico, with Pastor Alan Donaldson officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Larry Ray Runion

Larry Ray Runion, 65, of Beckley, passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House, surrounded by his family.

Born February 2, 1947, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Russell Ray and Nina Louise Anderson Runion.

Larry was a custodian at Cranberry-Prosperity Elementary School. He was a former mechanic and loved working on cars and spending time with his family. He was a Sgt. in the U.S. Army serving in Germany and Vietnam.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandparents, John D. and Daisy Lamb Runion and McKinney and Ollie Bunice Buckland Anderson.

Survivors include his fiancée, Mary Thomas of Beckley; sisters, Kathy Miller and husband Dennis of Daniels and Connie Miller and husband Virgil of MacArthur; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews as well as a host of cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 12, 2013, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Robert Day officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.

Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to service on Saturday.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Miller, Virgil Miller, Dewayne Rutherford, Kenneth Sizemore, Ricky Runion and Jeff Runion.

Grace Ann Sutphin

MCKINNEY, Texas — Grace Ann Sutphin, 98, of McKinney, formerly of Beckley, passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2013,  in McKinney, Texas.

Born on December 29, 1915, in Raleigh, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Craig Quesenberry and Ella Mae Densmore Quesenberry.

Mrs. Sutphin was a former employee of Richmond’s Cleaners and Laundry and was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Allen, Texas, and had made her home in Texas for the past 19 years.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include twin sons, Clyde Sutphin and his wife Mildred of Daniels, W.Va., and Craig Sutphin and his wife Sue of Allen, Texas; seven grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren are also among her survivors.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Three sisters, Beulah Avery, Jean Tyler, and Eve Kish, and a brother, Craig Quesenberry, preceded her in death.

Committal services will be conducted at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum B, on Sunday, January 13, 2013, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Thomas Shepherd officiating. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum. There will be no visitation.

Macie M. Milam Taylor

MAPLE FORK — Macie Milam Taylor, 70, of Maple Fork, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 10, 2013.

Born May 4, 1942, at Helen, W.Va., to the late William and Hulda Milam.

Macie enjoyed quilting, canning and needle point. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Macie took great pride in being a caregiver to others in need.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband of 39 years, Rosco Junior Taylor Sr., and two brothers, Joe and Virlon Milam.

Those left to cherish her memory include five children: Debbie S. Wiesolek and husband Richard, Rosco J. Taylor Jr., Theresa E. Taylor, Judith G. Esparza and husband Jose L. Sr., and Martha J. Taylor. Thirteen grandchildren: Laura, Huldie, Jose Jr., Adam, Jamie Jr., Elizabeth, Jessica, Richard Jr., Anna, Virginia, Katie, Angel, and Kyle. Six great-grandchildren Nicole, Taylor, Sophia, Arjae, Amelia, and Ava. Daughter-in-law Susan Taylor, son-in-law Jaime Torres Sr., and sister-in-law Dorothy Milam. Two extraordinary nieces Janie Milam and Julie Wickline. Macie is also survived by seven brothers: Lacy, Jimhazel, Carl, David, Morris and Shorty; and four sisters: Dollie, Ettabell, Cora, and Bessie.

Services will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, January 14, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, in Beckley. Following the services Macie will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Pallbearers will be as follows: Jose Esparza Jr., Adam Torres, Richard Wiesolek Jr., Jamie Torres Jr., Elizabeth Shaw and Anna Esparza.

POOL — Ira David Williams Sr., 96, of Pool, passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, in the White Funeral Home at Summersville, with Pastors Arliss Smith and Shirley Fox officiating. Interment will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Lelia Hazel Morrison Williams

HAMPTON, Va. — Lelia Hazel Morrison Williams, 89, passed away Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013.

Services will be noon, Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown, with David Robertson officiating. Burial will follow in the Peterstown Cemetery, Giles County, Va. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of the services Saturday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends and loved ones at the home of Shirley Kennett, 634 A Scenic Drive, Peterstown, immediately following the burial.
