Larry Herbert Bennett

ALDERSON — Larry Herbert Bennett, 52, of Alderson, passed away early Monday morning, Jan 7, 2013, at Hilltop Center, following a long illness.

Born June 21, 1960, at Beckley, he was the son of the late Herbert Carl and Norma T. Russell Bennett.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one sister, Freida Hanna, and four brothers, Kenneth, Danny, Rodney, and Eddie Bennett. Larry worked as a well driller for the past 30 years, and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two daughters, Autumn Bennett of Rupert and Cierra Bennett of Meadow Bridge; three step daughters, Adrianna Thomas of Meadow Bridge, Angela Bennett of Rainelle, and Audra Gregg of Rainelle; two sons, Larry C. Bennett of Green Sulphur Springs, and Jordan Bennett of Green Sulphur Springs; two sisters, Lettie Crist of Buena Vista, Va., and Linda Holcomb of Rupert; four brothers, James Robert Bennett of Quinwood, Jimmy Bennett of Rainelle, Teddy Bennett of Rupert, and Steve Bennett of Quinwood, and one grandchild, Elsie McClung.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at the Big Clear Creek Baptist Church on Anjean Road, with the Rev. Sam Groves officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service (1 to 2 p.m.) at the church.

Shirley Jean Brooker

WHITEWATER — Shirley Jean Brooker, 74, of Whitewater, a native of Zela, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, in the Pierson Chapel United Methodist Church at Zela, with Pastors Brad Blanchard and K.P. Pierson officiating.  Interment will follow in the Sebert Cemetery at Zela.

Friends may call at the White Funeral Home at Summersville on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.



Glenn Ray Gilkerson

LEWISBURG — Glenn Ray Gilkerson, 80, passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at the Salem VA Medical Center in Salem, Va.

Born May 21, 1932, in Sprague, W.Va., he was the youngest son of Isaac and Bessie Carper Gilkerson.

He was a 1950 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley. Glenn served in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1956. A Navy Airman E3, he was stationed in the Forward Area of Iwakuni, Japan for 431⁄2 months during the Korean Conflict. Glenn received United Nations, Korean, National Defense, and Good Conduct ribbons during his period of service.

Glenn was a newspaper pressman, working first for the Beckley Post Herald, then the Charlotte Observer, and finally the Washington Post. Prior to becoming disabled, he was secretary/treasurer of the United Pressman’s Union Local No. 360 and Assistant Shop Stewart of Washington Pressman’s Union Local No. 6.

He was a member of the Lewisburg United Methodist Church, Lewisburg Lions Club, and the Disabled American Veterans.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 10 sisters; three brothers; and a daughter, Sandra.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Mary Jane Phipps Gilkerson; daughters, Pamela (Ben) Lewis of Lewisburg, W.Va. and Karen (Eric) McDaniel of  Waiteville, W.Va.; three granddaughters, Amanda McDaniel-Guzman (Julio), Megan Lewis, and Danielle McDaniel; two great-granddaughters, Leighana and Blaklee Guzman; a sister, Louise Crouch of Beckley, W.Va.; several brother and sisters-in-laws, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at McCraw Funeral Home in Lewisburg, on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Services will be conducted at Lewisburg United Methodist Church in Lewisburg, on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joe Kenaston officiating. Graveside services and burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Beckley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charitable organization.

Frank Ryan Gravely

CASHMERE — Frank Ryan Gravely, 74, of Cashmere, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013.

Services will be 7 p.m., Thursday, January 10, 2013, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Earl Brewer officiating.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. until time of the services Thursday. He will be cremated.

LAMPASAS, Texas — Sadie Wanda Hankins of Lampasas, formerly of Beckley, died Friday, Jan. 4th, 2013, in Lampasas.

JOPPA, Md. — Damon G. Meadows, age 78, of Joppa, a native of Besoco, passed away Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013.

George Shockley ‘Shock’ Prillaman

OCEANA — George Shockley “Shock” Prillaman, 69, of Oceana, passed away on Jan. 5, 2013, in Welch Community Hospital, Welch.

He was born June 14, 1943 in Bassett, Va., a son of the late George Patrick and Flora Thompson Prillaman.

George was a U.S. Army Veteran and he worked many years for Norfolk and Southern Railroad as a conductor and brakeman.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his loving wife of 43 years, Dana Lynn Salyer Prillaman; a daughter Rachel Susan Prillaman of Oceana; two sons Reuben James Prillaman of Oceana, and Brian Prillaman of Georgia; three sisters Edith Willingham of Mullens, Barbara Woody of Alpoca, and Nadine Hamrick of Chickasaw, Ala.; a brother Lonnie Prillaman of Mullens; four grandchildren Brianna Prillaman, Gabby Prillaman, Aaron Hoosier, and Olivia Hoosier; and a host of other loving family and friends.

In keeping with his wishes he was cremated and a Celebration of his life will be held 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at the American Legion Hall, Mullens.

Lesta Mae ‘Sis’ Roberts

LEIVASY — Lesta Mae “Sis” Roberts, 83, passed away Saturday evening, Jan. 5, 2013, in Summersville Regional Medical Center, following a short illness.

Born Nov. 17, 1929, at Quinwood, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lacy and IO McClung Trout.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Ellis Roberts; two sons, Brian Keith and Bern Lee Roberts; three brothers, Landis, Donald, and Lendon Trout.

She was a member of Victory Chapel Church of Leivasy, and was a homemaker.

She loved all her grandchildren, and she recently had her first great-grandchild, “Charter Jeffrey Long” who she made a trip to Ohio to meet.

Survivors include four daughters, Bela Ann Jones (Eddie) of Leivasy, Kay Roberts of Leivasy, Beth Stewart of Canal Fulton, Ohio and Robin Roberts of Leivasy; four sons, Bruce Roberts (Kim) of Nettie, Dana Roberts (Penny)  of Mount Nebo, Bo Roberts and Bob Trout, both of Leivasy; a sister, Cheryl Boggs (Conard) of Rainelle; five grandchildren: Kelli (D.J.), Jimmy Lee (Breanna), Alex, Anna, and Garrett; one great-grandchild, Carter Jeffrey Long; three step grandchildren, Tiffany, Eddie and Terry; three step great-grandchildren, Makayla, Laci and Landan; several nieces, nephews and other extended family.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at the Mtn. Baptist Church at Carl, with Pastor Dave Acree officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle.

Sybil Lee Rose

HINTON — Sybil Lee Rose, 77, of Hinton, formerly of Kopper City Bottom, passed away on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, in Summers Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Hinton.

She was born June 21, 1935, in Glen Morrison, a daughter of the late Clayton Cottle and Minnie Blair Cook Walker.

Sybil was a graduate of Oceana High School.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James Garland Rose; a son Rodney Dale Rose; a daughter Janet Faye Rose; and two brothers Leonard and Ernest Walker.

Those left to cherish her memories include a daughter Shirley Rose of Hinton; a son Jerry (Carol) Rose of Oceana; three sisters Bernice Giles, Elizabeth Linton, Joyce Griffith, and Glenna Toler; two brothers Raymond Walker and James Walker; four grandchildren Landon Dale Berta, Steven James Berta, Cory Lee-Jamie Rose, and Jordan Lea Rose; two great grandchildren Devin Berta and Zayen Berta, and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, with Bro. Euel Toler officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at the funeral home.

Lena Lucille Minnich Smith

OAK HILL — Lena Lucille Minnich Smith, 89, of Oak Hill, passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at Hilltop Center.

Born July 8, 1923 at Minden, she was the daughter of the late William Edward Minnich and Lena Pearl (Spencer) Minnich.

Lena retired from the Beckley Manufacturing Plant where she worked many years as an Technician assembling parts for televisions, radios, and electronics.

In addition to her parents, Lena was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Olan Smith, her only daughter Janet Pearl Faw, two brothers Bill Minnich and Ray Minnich, and two sisters Dorothy Flinner and Fay Piotrowski.

Those left to cherish her memory are one sister Loretta Tennant and her husband Sonny of Oak Hill, and several nieces and nephews.

Her remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main Street, Oak Hill where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and where the funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday, with Rev. Jerry Bush and Rev. David Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Wilma Lucille Yancey Surber

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Wilma Lucille Yancey Surber, 84, of Harrisonburg, died at 7:20 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Summers County Appalachian Regional Hospital,  following a short illness.

Born April 18, 1928 at Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Oscar B. and Martha Smith Yancey.

Wilma was a graduate of Hinton High School and Clifton Forge School of Nursing and had worked in nursing homes and as a private duty nurse for many years. She was an avid fisherman and loved playing bingo and gardening.

Preceded in death by her husband Francis H. Surber and one son, Steven H. Surber.

Survived by one daughter, Sue Noel and husband Jim of Harrisonburg; one daughter-in-law, Sandy Surber of Hinton; four sisters, Helen McEvoy of Corte Madera, Calif., Elizabeth Schroeder of Hinton, Janet Lilly and husband Damon of Pipestem and Nancy Britt of Eagle Rock, Va.; four grandchildren, Scott, Missy, Teri and Kimberly; seven great grandchildren, Ariana, Kayla, Lincoln, Reese, Kevin, Kendall and Gage.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, with Pastor Robbie Merritt officiating. Burial will follow in the Restwood Memorial Gardens.

ALLEN, Texas — Grace Sutphin, 98, of Allen, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013.

Stella Naomi Thompson

Stella Naomi Thompson, age 79, of Sophia, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 7, 2013.

Born on August 20, 1933, in Dorothy, she was preceded in death by her parents, John and Leah Stover Cook.   

She was retired from the WV State Police with nearly 30 years of service as a  company clerk. She was an avid bowler, and a member of the Coal City Freewill Baptist Church. Mrs. Thompson was a devoted wife and mother and was dedicated to her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers,  Harold, James, and Charles Cook.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her husband of 57 years,  Billy Ray Thompson, three sons, Billy Ray Thompson Jr. of Sophia, Jeffery Thompson and his wife Melisa of Sophia, and Bryan Thompson and his wife Karen of Cool Ridge; a brother, John Cook of Teays Valley; five sisters, Freda White of Dorothy, Thelma Mancari of Newport News, Va., Ruth Ann Bailey of Whitesville,  Sue Harris of Loraine, Ohio, and Mary Lou Workman of Sylvester; three grandchildren, Ian, Jeffery, and Sissy and a great granddaughter Aubree.

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Stella Thompson on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Fairdale Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Charlie Brown and Rev. Dean Adams officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Friends may call at the church from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.
