Alvis Earl Alderman

Alvis Earl Alderman of Dry Creek, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 16, 2010, at his home after a long illness.

He was born June 19, 1935, in Raleigh County, W.Va., a son of the late James Marion and Lottie Pettry Alderman.

He was a member of the UMWA and Local #6608. He enjoyed spending time fishing, ginsenging, and most of all he loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Albert Marion Alderman.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Nancy Anne Alderman; children, Earl Alderman Jr. and wife, JoAnne, of Taylor, Texas, Jamie Alderman of Dry Creek, W.Va., Kay Bone and husband, Gary, of Beckley, W.Va., Sherry McCoy and husband, Rev. Allen, of Hickory, N.C., Opie Alderman of Dry Creek, W.Va.; a sister, Juanita Alderman of Dry Creek, W.Va.; and a host of friends.

Services will be held on Wednesday afternoon, April 21, 2010, at 1 o’clock in the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, W.Va. Clergy will be Rev. David Cook. Singers will be Turner Family. Interment will be in Cooper Cemetery, Dry Creek, W.Va.

Visitation will be Tuesday 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Gladys Mae Allen

LINDSIDE — Gladys Mae Allen, 73, of Lindside passed away Saturday, April 17, 2010, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Va.

Louise Lilly Allen

FOREST HILL — Louise Lilly Allen, 93, of Forest Hill died at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 17, 2010, in Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon, Va., following a long illness.

Born August 22, 1916, at Forest Hill, she was the daughter of the late Emert and Rose Cottle Lilly.

Louise was a homemaker and was a member of Forest Hill Methodist Church. She had lived most of her life in Summers County.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Myrl Allen, Sr., in December 1994.

Also preceded by one son, Richard Allen, an infant daughter, Cynthia Allen, one sister, Avenell Lilly, and three brothers, Ralph, Edgar and John Lilly.

Survivors include one son, Myrl Allen, Jr., and wife Linda Sue of Lebanon, Va.; One daughter, Linda Allen Foster of Forest Hill; Two brothers, Buster Lilly and wife Phyllis of Shady Spring and Athoel Lilly and wife Gladys of Marie; Three sisters, Leota Solace of Beckley, Naomi Wood of Scarbro and Viola Buckland of Forest Hill; Eleven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastors Sam Haught, Mike McCoy and Sam Groves officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Methodist Church Cemetery, Forest Hill. Friends may call from 6 until 9 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.

Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Helen R. Wilfong Fetty

Helen R. Wilfong Fetty, 82, passed away on April 16, 2010, at the Bowers Hospice House. Helen was a resident of Layland, W.Va., for 38 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gerald (Jerry) Fetty; her parents Walter and Minnie Wilfong and daughter-in-law Leanne Fetty of California.

Helen is survived by her 3 children, Lester C. Fetty of Peris, Calif., Linda Sue George and husband of Merrysville, Kan., Shirley A. Hudson and husband Bill of Gap Mills, W.Va.; grandchildren Anita and Larry, Jessica Corry, Chris, and Ashley all of Calif., Skyler Barbour of Roanoke whom she was especially proud of, Tammi Barbour and husband Darrell of Roanoke, sister-in-law Juanita Gerico of Fairmont.

Helen loved people and the Lord.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens in Oak Hill.

Ray ‘Junior’ Hall

GAP MILLS — Ray “Junior” Hall, 73, of Gap Mills, W.Va., surrounded by family and friends, peacefully passed away Saturday morning, April 17, 2010, at his home following a long illness.

He was born at Quinwood, W.Va., March 10, 1937, a son of the late Dennis Ray Hall and Emma Ratliff Hall.

Mr. Hall was a retired employee of B.F. Goodrich and owner/operator of Hall Logging, a member of the Mt. Herman Baptist Church at Sarton and he attended the Crimson Springs Church at Zenith.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lena Pence Hall; a son, Anthony Ray Hall; two brothers, Hoover Hall and Bill Bostic; a sister, Betty Vance.

Surviving are his wife, Shelby J. Adams Hall of Gap Mills; a daughter, Beverly Tincher of Alderson; six stepchildren, Debra Faulknier of Charlottesville, Va., Shirley Fury of White Sulphur Springs, Lisa Oliver, Beverly Glover, Darrell Clarkson and Keith Clarkson all of Gap Mills; two sisters, Sue Coffman of Lewisburg and Eva Chandler of Greenville; three brothers, Joe Dale Bostic of Ronceverte, Fred Bostic of Lewisburg and David Bostic of Union; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at the Crimson Springs Church at Zenith with the Rev. Jim Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Herman Baptist Church Cemetery at Sarton, W.Va. Friends may call at the Groves Funeral Home in Union from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and at the church one hour prior to the services. Pallbearers will be Keith Whisman, Brandon and Mathew Flack, Jeremy and Travis Oliver, Kevin, Shawn and Justin Glover.

Groves Funeral Home in Union is in charge of arrangements.





Sarah Haynes

Sarah Louise Haynes, 81, of Wyoming, passed away Saturday, April 17, 2010, following a short illness.

Born May 6, 1928, at Athens, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Donnie and Effie Lilly Brooks.

Mrs. Haynes was of the Mormon faith. She enjoyed working with her flowers and garden, being outdoors and being with her family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Haynes, three sons, Jack, Donnie and Ray Haynes, and three grandchildren.

Survivors include her son Tom Haynes and his wife, Debbie, of Wyoming; Daughter-in-law, Karen Haynes of Wyoming; 2 Brothers, Charles Brooks and his wife, Barbara, of Atlanta, Ga., and John Brooks and his wife, Jean, of Goldsboro, N.C.; 2 Sisters, Lilly Herring and her husband, David, of Seneca, S.C., and Laura Beach and her husband, Frank, of Ghent, Ky.; 13 special grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Sarah’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 20, 2010, in the Calfee Funeral Service Chapel with Elder Ed Laxton officiating.

Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 19, 2010, at the funeral home.

Nancy Miller

NAOMA — Nancy Miller of Naoma, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 15, 2010.

She was born February 21, 1940, at Bemis, W.Va., a daughter of the late Cliford and Minnie Nelson Strawder.

She was a Christian and member of the Delbert Freewill Baptist Church, Naoma, W.Va.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Vicky Rhodes; two sisters, Sue Wamsley and Shirley Batsenikos; two brothers, Dale Strawder and Teddy Strawder.

She is survived by her husband of over 40 years, Ronald; children, Kevin Rhodes and wife, Peggy, of Medina, Ohio, Clifton Rhodes of Brunswick, Ohio, Diane Webb and husband, Robert, of Cranberry, W.Va., Victor Rhodes and wife, Christine, of Cleveland, Ohio, Paul Miller of Medina, Ohio, and Jason at home; a sister, Freda Lowe and husband, Chester, of Seville, Ohio, and two brothers, Clifford Strawder and wife, Peggy, of Georgia and Samuel Strawder of Ohio; eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be held on Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at 12 o’clock noon in the Delbert Freewill Baptist Church, Naoma, W.Va. Clergy will be Rev. Danny Gilfilen and Rev. Benny Turner. Singers will be Turner Family. Interment will be in Vealey Cemetery, Naoma, W.Va.

Visitation will be 1 hour before the service at the church.

Dee M. Morgan Jr.

CLEAR FORK — Dee M. Morgan, Jr., 84, of Clear Fork, W.Va., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at Golden Harvest Nursing Home, Welch, W.Va. Dee was born December 29, 1925, in Capels, W.Va., a son of the late Dee Morgan, Sr., and Florence Phillips Morgan. He was a member of the Clear Fork Independent Church of God. Dee worked for the Virginian, N & W and Norfolk Southern Railways in Baileysville, W.Va., as an assistant track maintenance foreman for 43 years. He loved going to church and all of his church family.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas J. Morgan and Herbert Morgan; three sisters, Catherine Jenkins, Gladys Lemaster and Louise Dameron. Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Dorothy Carbaugh Morgan; two sons, Charles Morgan and wife Judy of Fanrock, W.Va., and Roger Morgan and wife Kim of Pineville, W.Va.; three granddaughters, Carla Clay and husband Robby of Fanrock, W.Va., Jennifer Duffel and husband Dell of N.C., and Kara Steele and husband Billy of Indian Creek, W.Va.; two grandsons, Denny Morgan and wife Emily of N.C. and Bobby Smith of Pineville, W.Va.; two great-grandsons, Kyle Duffel of N.C. and Cody Clay of Fanrock, W.Va.; three great-granddaughters, Nicole “Nikki” Cheek of N.C., Caleigh Morgan of N.C. and Kholoe Steele of Indian Creek, W.Va.; a brother, William Bill Morgan and wife Judi of Shady Spring, W.Va.; a sister, Ella Mae Mitchem of N.C.; many nieces and nephews and other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 19, 2010, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home with Rev. Hannibal Blankenship, Jr., and Rev. Sammy Lester officiating. Dee will be laid to rest in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, W.Va. Friends called from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be family and friends. W. N. Murphree Jr.

MULLENS — William Newton Murphree, Jr., “Bill,” a longtime resident of Mullens, W.Va., passed away on April 17, 2010, due to complications from a stroke. He turned 98 years old on April 12.

Bill was born in Tucson, Ariz., on April 12, 1912, to the late William Newton Murphree, Sr., and Talitha Adeline Shortridge. He then lived in St. Catherine’s, Canada, Portsmouth, Va., and Pierpoint, W.Va., where he graduated from William M. Ritter High School in 1930 as one of only six students.

He graduated from Concord College in 1934 and began his teaching career at various schools in W.Va., including the one-room Little Brown School House, a log building which still stands near Twin Falls State Park. Bill loved to tell stories about his experiences there. On September 27, 1942, Bill married his beloved wife, Hester Marie Sizemore, who preceded him in death in August 2001. They were baptized and married at the Highland Avenue Baptist Church while he was on leave from the U.S. Navy.

Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II from 1942-1946. He retired as a Lieutenant with the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1972. After receiving an honorable discharge from active duty he completed his education at West Virginia Institute of Technology earning a B.A. degree in Industrial Arts. He then completed a Master of Arts degree in Industrial Arts at Ohio State University and began his teaching career at Mullens High School as the “shop” teacher until he retired in 1974.

Bill and Hester enjoyed 59 years of marriage and loved to travel. They visited all 50 states and Canada multiple times. They traveled across the United States several times and in later years would travel by train. As a young adult Bill traveled across country on his Harley Davidson, his “motor,” and remained a fan until the end.

Bill was the last remaining member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by his sisters, Evelyn Phillips and Talitha “Sis” Stewart, and his brother, Ben Murphree. He is survived by his daughters, Lea (Don) Love of Phoenix, Ariz., and Miki (Billy) Oliver of Cary, N.C., where he made his home for the past three and a half years. He is also survived by three granddaughters, Allison (Erik) Sheller of Tempe, Ariz.; Brooke Love of Phoenix, Ariz.; Megan (Brian) Smith of Chandler, Ariz.; one grandson, Morgan Oliver of Charlottesville, Va.; and great-grandsons, AugustFinley Sheller and William Smith. Also, surviving are nephews Clifford “Sonnie” Phillips, Richard Phillips, Dr. Daniel Stewart, Dr. Andrew Stewart and niece Jude Stewart.

Bill attended the adult day care program with the Total Life Center in Cary, N.C., for the past 3 1/2 years where he was affectionately identified as “Mr. Bill,” treated with dignity and kindness by staff members Joan, Terry, Stephanie, Kat, and Brett. The family extends our sincere appreciation to them.

Arrangements are being made by Tankersley Funeral Home of Mullens, W.Va. Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Tankersley Funeral Home and committal services with military rites at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum B on Wednesday, April 21, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Doug Sandy officiating. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made in memory of Bill Murphree to the Total Life Center, 110 Maury O’Dell Place, Cary, NC 27511, or to a charity of your choice. Please take time to visit a state park and remember Bill.

Gary Wayne ‘Peewee’ Plumley

CIRTSVILLE — Gary Wayne “Peewee” Plumley, age 49, of Cirtsville, West Virginia, died Friday, April 16, 2010, at the Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia, following a short illness.

Born on October 3, 1960, at Cirtsville, West Virginia, he was the son of Curtis Plumley of Cirtsville, W.Va., and the late Virgie Bennett Plumley.

Mr. Plumley was a coal miner for Speed Mining Company at Dawes, W.Va. He was a Christian and was of the Baptist faith. He had lived all of his life at Cirtsville, W.Va. Mr. Plumley enjoyed hunting, fishing, and riding his ATV.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Larry Ray Bennett Sr.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Darlene Craddock Plumley; 2 daughters: Sherri Annette Plumley and her fiancé Kyle Sharp of Cirtsville, W.Va.; Karen Lynn Plumley and her fiancé James “Sparky” Sparks of Cirtsville, W.Va.; A granddaughter, Amber Nicole Adkins of Cirtsville, W.Va.; 2 brothers, Curtis Ray Plumley Jr. of Cirtsville, W.Va.; Dennis Lee Plumley of Cirtsville, W.Va.; 1 sister, Daisy Moss and her husband Leon of Norton, Ohio; A special nephew who was like his son, Larry Ray Bennett Jr. and his wife Jenny of Cirtsville, W.Va.; A special niece, Kayla Sue Craddock of Maple Fork, West Virginia. Gary is also survived by his special “little buddy,” Conner. He is also survived by his little pet, Puddles.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, W.Va., on Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Emmitt Word officiating. Burial will follow at the Craddock Cemetery at Maple Fork, W.Va. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday. Pallbearers will be James “Sparky” Sparks, Kyle Sharp, Leon Moss, Charles Craddock, Jeff Evans, Jay Moss, and Brian Adkins.
