ELKVIEW — Marlene Beverley, 75, formerly of Prosperity, died Monday, March 29, 2010, at the Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.
Born Aug. 22, 1934, at Kilsyth, she was the daughter of the late Rufus L. and Eva Jordon Beverley.
Ms. Beverley was retired from the UMWA District office in Beckley after 40 years of service.
Survivors include a brother, Howard Beverley and wife, Drema of Cross Lanes; two sisters, Virgie Beverley James and husband, Jim of Hedgesville, W.Va. and Lorene Beverley of Elkview, W.Va.
Graveside and committal rites will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 2010, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, with Minister Ken Overdorf officiating.

Frances Niemiec Boltralik
Frances Niemiec Boltralik, age 95, died Monday March 29, 2010.
She was born in Eastern Poland on December 13, 1914, to Josefa Prygon and Franciszek Niemiec. She settled in Cheswick, Pa., after World War II.
She enjoyed her sewing and relating the stories of her escape from Siberian work camps after the invasion of her homeland by Stalin. She was the wife of the late Fabian Boltralik and loving mother of Lydia Kobylak (Mieczyslaw) of Cass City, Mich., Anna Urquiza (Hector) of Dyer, Ind., Fabian Boltralik (Teresa) of Beckley, and Richard Bednarski of Augusta, Ga. who preceded her in death last year. She leaves behind fifteen grandchildren: Sara Boltralik, Emily Boltralik, Lindsay Boltralik, Fabian Urquiza, Cecilia Urquiza, Lila Kung, Veronica Nahernak, Joseph Kobylak, Valerie Hendricks, Dieter Bednarski, Mary Ann Perry, Lily Finch, Daphine Kaphazy, Rosie Cook and Sonya Solomon; sixteen great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Roman Niemiec, and her two sister’s, Janina Wierzbicki and sister Mary Margaret Niemiec.
Visitation will be at the Charles B. Jarvie Funeral Home, Inc. 1607 Pittsburgh St., Cheswick, Pa. from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 31, 2010. A final departure ceremony will be held at the Jarvie Funeral Home in Cheswick at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 1, 2010. Frances will be buried beside her husband at Lakewood Memorial Gardens, Cheswick, Pa. immediately following the ceremony.

Edward ‘Bullgear’ Bowles Jr.
Edward “Bullgear” Bowles Jr., age 74, of Flat Top, W.Va., died Monday March 29, 2010, at the Bluefield Regional Hospital in Bluefield, W.Va., following a short illness.
Born on January 15, 1936, at St. Albans, W.Va., he was the son of the late Edward Bowles Sr. and the late Dessie Perdue Bowles.
Mr. Bowles was a retired mechanic for Rish Equipment Company. He had made his home at Flat Top, for several years, and his favorite hobby was being a ham radio operator.
Mr. Bowles was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Bowles; a daughter, Kathy Calderis; four sisters, Sylvia Ballard, Esther Richardson, Dorothy Condor, Mary Ann Bowles, and a brother, Arthur Bowles
Survivors include his wife Betty Miller Bowles; his children: Destony Bowles of Flat Top, Kevin Miller of Flat Top, Roger Miller of York, S.C., Mike Miller of Elkins, W.Va., Steven Bowles of Kannapolis, N.C., Cody Bowles and his wife Tiffany of Bluefield, W.Va., and Debbie Frey and her husband Barry of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a brother, Richard Bowles and his wife Lorene of Cleveland, Ohio; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 2, 2010, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel, with the Rev. Charles Tilley officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home in Shady Spring.
Pallbearers will be Cody Bowles, Roger Miller, Delano Walker, Matthew Cummings, Ronald Thompson, and Christopher Lucas.

Harry Dean Craghead
Harry Dean Craghead, 62, of Mount Tabor Road, Beckley, died Sunday evening, March 28, 2010, at Raleigh General Hospital following a sudden illness.
Born March 18, 1948, in Mullens, he was the son of the late Paul J. Craghead and Clarica Robertson Craghead.
Harry was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and had attended Beckley College.
For more than 38 years, Harry worked as a plumber and pipefitter throughout West Virginia, and was a member of the Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 625, Charleston. Harry was a very plain and simple person, he was devoted to his family, loved his grandchildren and enjoyed working on the farm and raising his animals.
Harry was a member of the AF & AM Masonic Lodge No. 95 of Beckley.
Those left to cherish his memory, his loving and caring wife of 38 years, Donna Faye Cochran Craghead of Beckley; three children and spouses, Traci Lynn and Larry Williams of Beckley, Christopher Todd and Thelma Craghead of Forest Hill, Paul Nicholas and Kim Craghead of Speedway; his pride and joy, his eight grandchildren, Meghan, Nathan and Larry Evan Williams, Todd and Abby Craghead, Haley, Alli and Carley Craghead; sister, Monica Long and husband Harold “Frosty” of Beckley.
The family has honored Harry’s request, his body has been cremated.
A service of celebration will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2010 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Daniel Legg and Bill Parker speaking. Following the service of celebration, we will travel to the family farm at Speedway for a brief scattering service for his family and friends.
Friends may visit with the family on Thursday from noon until the service hour.

Charles Lewis Johnston passed away on March 29, 2010, at the Bowers Hospice House following a short illness.
Born February 5, 1936, at Besoco, he was the son of the late Audrey Christine Lilly Johnston and Charles Lee Johnston.
Proceeded in death by his wife Goldie Shrewsbury Abner, Ernestine Koone, his companion of more than 35 years, and by his brothers Oris Lee Johnston, Butch Johnston, Lloyd Johnson and Don Johnson.
He will be sadly missed by his daughter, Teresa Christine Lester and husband Cliff Lester of Shady Spring; granddaughter, Crystal Sawyer and her husband Brent of Dawsonville, Ga.; grandson, Joshua Lester of Shady Spring; sisters, Nancy Calvert and husband Gary of Coal City, and Myra Sheriff and husband Bill of Cave Creek, Ariz.; brother, Ray Johnston and wife Rita Johnston of Springfield, Va., and Ernestine’s children Jane Gambrell, Franklin Koone, Libby Hansford, Paul Koone and Joe Koone and their families; also his girlfriend, Beth Duvigneaud and her family.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, April 2, 2010, at Williams Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia with Rev. Dan Coalson and Kenny Woolwine officiating. Burial will follow at Maggie Lilly Cemetery at Mitchells Ridge in Princewick, W.Va. Pallbearers will be friends and family.

Robert Harold Ray
Robert Harold Ray, of Beckley, died at his home, on Sunday March 28, 2010, at the age of 78.
Born March 30, 1931, at Gassaway, he was the son of the late Glen and Ivy Fields Ray.
Mr. Ray was a construction worker and worked for the Ohio Atlas Construction Company and the Bakalite Company while he resided in Parkersburg for many years, and he attended the Church of Christ. He had a passion for all sports especially wrestling which he watched for 55 years and helped coach, he was a “Big Force” in getting Woodrow Wilson’s Wrestling room all remodeled with updates and new equipment most programs don’t have.
Other than his parents he is preceded in death by one brother Jerry Ray.
He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Joyce Ann Trusky Ray; two sons, Michael Ray and Mark Ray, both of Parkersburg and two daughters, Debbie Shively and her husband Craig of Mineral Wells and Stacy Piersol and husband Mike of Belpre, Ohio; five grandchildren: Matthew Wright, Natasha Wright, Jonathan Wright, Briar Shively and Savannah Shively; one great grandchild, Gage Wright; one brother, Richard Ray and K9 companion Grand puppy Abby.

OAK HILL — Charles "Charlie" Ray Sexton, 55, of Oak Hill, died on Sunday, March 28, 2010, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.
Born May 21, 1954, at Beckley, he was the son of Edna J. Romage Sexton of Oak Hill, and the late Estel M. Sexton Sr.
Charlie was a machine and shuttle car operator for Baylor Mining and a former member of the UMWA.
Survivors include wife, Margaret Lea "Maggie" Sexton; two sons, Shawn Sexton of Oak Hill and Brian Manley of Oak Hill; one daughter, Amy Williamson of Cape Coral, Fla.; one brother, Estel "Etchie" Sexton and two sisters, Dorothy Ray of Port Charlotte, Fla. and Sharon Blevins of Stanaford. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Caleb Sexton, Brian Tyler Manley, Jake Williamson and Hailey Williamson and Bryson Manley.
Services will be 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 1, 2010, at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with the Rev. Charles Tilley officiating. Entombment will be at High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Oak Hill.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home.
