Charlie Adkins

RURAL RETREAT, Va. — Charlie Adkins, 83, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at his home.

Edra Blanche Adkins

HILLDALE — Edra Blanche Adkins, 84, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, February 6, 2010, at her home following a long illness.

Born April 24, 1925, at Kanawha, Co., W.Va., she was the owner of Bluestone Grill and lived most of her life in Summers Co.

She enjoyed playing bingo, gardening, fishing and raising her flower garden and bird watching.

Preceded in death by her husband, Henry Adkins; one son, William Ray Adkins; two sisters, Frances Hanks and Faye Roark and a brother, Junior Meadows.

Survived by her children, Frank Adkins and wife Margaret, Dan Adkins, Charles Adkins and wife Faye, Roger Adkins, Judy Lilly, Melda Phillips and husband Roger, Carolyn Sherwood, Connie Woodrum and husband Tommy, Cleatis Adkins and wife Sue, Twilla Freeman and husband Arthur, James Adkins and David Adkins and wife Julie; three sisters, Willa Pegram, Alma Keaton and Opal Lydon; two brothers, Roy Wills and Johnny Meadows and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Private funeral services were held at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel in Hinton with Pastor Johnny Wills officiating. Mrs. Adkins was interred in the Houchins Cemetery at True. Her grandsons served as pallbearers.

Saundra Allen

Saundra Mitchem Allen of Peters Dr., Beckley, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at her home following an extended illness. Mrs. Allen was 70 years of age.

Leonard ‘Flyrod’ Bennett

Leonard Bennett, “Flyrod”, of Cool Ridge, age 75, retired coal miner, and loving father died at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital, Saturday February 6, 2010, following a long illness.

He was born August 17, 1934, in the Town of McKendree, W.Va., to the late Nelson and Stella Sears Bennett.

Mr. Bennett retired from Slab Fork coal mine and was known as Flyrod to all that knew him.

He was also a member of Fairview Freewill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Rhoda Bennett; son, Sergeant First Class Bill Bennett, and son–in-law Gibb Thompson.

Survivors include his wife Kathleen Wood Bennett, sons, James Bennett of Capon Bridge, Steven and wife Jamie of Bristol, Tenn., David Bennett and companion Beverly Martin of Evans; daughters, Rosie Thompson Funkhouser and husband Ed of Baker, and Sarah Hawkins of Dandridge, Tenn.; grandchildren, Tiffany and husband D.J. Davis, Ashley Hawkins, Aaron Hawkins, Christina Hawkins, and Seth Bennett, and great grandchildren Dennis Davis, Danielle Davis, and Nathan Davis.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel, with Elder Charles Canaday officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Beckley.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Milton ‘Tom’ Borders

KEYROCK — Milton “Tom” Borders, 73, passed away Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, in Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a short illness.

Born Nov. 5, 1936, at Pineville, he was the son of the late John Grant and Rhoda Carmen Preston Borders.

Mr. Borders was a member of the Rock Castle Baptist Church and retired from Chrysler Corporation in Dayton, Ohio. He enjoyed working on cars, NASCAR, car shows and going to church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Power.

Survivors include his wife Geraldine Rogal Borders of the home; a son, Milton Thomas Borders Jr. of Sidney, Ohio; two daughters, Roxanne Sheppard and her husband, Maynard, of Hamilton, Ohio and Patricia Borders of the home; three brothers, Linsly Borders and his wife, Vicki, of Lynchburg, Va., John Borders Jr. and his wife, Virginia, of Kopperston and Paul Arthur Borders and his wife, Karen, of Beckley; three sisters, Daisy Bell Peters and her husband, Elmer, of Chesapeake, Beulah Jean Borders of New Richmond, and Roxie May Vada and her husband, Jay, of Carrollton, Ohio; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Tom’s life will be noon, Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010, at Rock Castle Baptist Church with the Rev. Donald “Doc” Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m., today, Wednesday, at the church.

Mary Olive Perry Buzzard

WHITESVILLE — Mary Olive Perry Buzzard, passed away on Sunday, February 7, 2010, at CAMC Memorial in Charleston.

Born May 5, 1949, in Hazy, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Dewey Edward and Opal May (Young) Perry.

Survivors include two sons, Everette Dwayne Hooten of Roanoke, Va. and James Darrin Hooten of Hiram, Ohio; one daughter, Michele Reneé (Hooten) Bates of Conneaut, Ohio; two sisters, Helen May Morgan of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Darlene Dickens of Naoma; two brothers, Fred M. Perry of Douglasville, Pa. and Frank Perry of Cleveland, Ohio; grandchildren: Ashley Niskala, Miranda Phillipp, Everette Hooten, Zachary Phillipp, Emily Hooten and Elizabeth Hooten; one great-grandson, Brandon Avery Phillipp; and a special friend, Emma Mathis.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, February 11, 2010, at Armstrong Funeral Home in Whitesville. Singers will be the Stewart Family. Burial will follow in the Adkins Cemetery at Naoma.

Visitation will be two hours prior to service Thursday at the funeral home.

Charlie Denny Ray Carter

Charlie Denny Ray Carter, age 53, of Beaver, went to be with the Lord on Monday February 8, 2010, after a short illness.

Born on September 9, 1956, in Welch, W.Va., he was the son of Harold and Betty Mullins Carter of Beaver.

Charlie was a member of the Church of God Family Worship Center in Beckley. He was a disabled carpenter. Charlie had lived at Beaver, for the past three years, having previously lived in Union Hall, Va.

Surviving are his children: Misti Stevens and her husband Aaron of Mason, Ohio, Paula Stinson and her husband Chris of Princeton, Heather Carter of Roderfield, Charlie Carter Jr. of Roderfield; and six grandchildren, Alena Grace, Ethan, Gavin, Brianna, Hailey, and Chloe; brothers, Gene Carter of Pulaski, Va., and Anthony Carter and his wife Lisa of Alderson; sister, Debbie Dean and her husband Roger of Shady Spring; and nieces and nephews, Erick, Tiffany, Brian, Brandon, Leah, and Jeremy.

Charlie was always very enthusiastic to lend his many talents for his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010 at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel, with Pastor Phil Combs officiating. Graveside rites will be conducted by Rev. Ken Wright at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Wednesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will Jeremy Dean, Brian Carter, Brandon Carter, Greg Lester, Stephen Withrow, and Erick Carter.

Sue Ann Mason Chapman

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — Sue Ann Mason Chapman, 64, formerly of Beckley died Friday, February 5, 2010, in a Camp Hill, Pa. following a short illness.

Born on Christmas Day, 1945, in Beckley she was the daughter of H. Wayne Mason and Juanita McMillion, both of Beckley.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Paul Mason; step-mother, Vivian Mason and step-father, Emory McMillion.

Sue was a 1963 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and a 1970 graduate of Beckley College with an Associate Degree in Business Administration. She was employed by Mason and Company and by the Raleigh County Board of Education while in Beckley. In 1984 she and her husband moved to Mechanicsburg and then to Perrysburg, Ohio in 2001 and back to Mechanicsburg in 2007.

She was very active in churches throughout the years. She was a member of the United Methodist Temple in Beckley, First United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg and the First United Methodist Church in Bowling Green, Ohio. In Mechanicsburg she was a prayer warrior for the Prayer Team, Sunday School Teacher, teacher for the Wonderful Wednesday program, as well as once serving as the Church Secretary. While in Bowling Green she established the Sunshine Sunday School Class for mentally challenged adults.

She was also very active in her community. She volunteered most recently at the Daren Shelter in Mechanicsburg. In Ohio she volunteered at the Pregnancy Center in Bowling Green, The American Red Cross and St. Luke’s Hospital in Maumee, Ohio. She was a past member of the Upper Allen Women’s Club.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband of 37 years, Bill Chapman; children: Scott Chapman of Indialantic, Fla., Becky Walker (Kent) of Beckley, John Chapman of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and Destiny Mason at home; a grandson, Andy Walker. Also surviving are her step-mother Betsy Mason of Beckley; sisters, Jeanie Cochran (Roger) of Frederick, Md., and Linda Mitchem (Roger) of Beckley and by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 11 in the Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, Beckley.

Friends may call 11 a.m. until time of the service on Thursday.

The family request that donations of sympathy be made to First United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg, Pa.

PINEVILLE — Charles W. “Buddy” Cook Jr., 79, of Pineville, passed away Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, in Bowers hospice House, Beckley, following a short illness.

A celebration of Buddy’s life will be 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, at Cook Memorial Baptist Church, Pineville, with the Rev. Keith Reed and the Rev. Donald “Doc” Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010 at Calfee Funeral Service, Pineville.

Ivaliene ‘Ivy’ Dean

HINTON — Ivaliene “Ivy” Dean 82, formerly of Brooks, died at 10:55 p.m. Saturday, February 6, 2010, at the Summers Nursing and Rehab Center at Hilldale, following a long illness.

Born March 25, 1927, at Brooks, she was the daughter of the late Waymon and Bertie Adkins Berry.

Ivy was a homemaker and loved her flowers and friends. She attended the Sandstone Baptist Church.

Preceded in death by her husband, Billie A. Dean on June 6, 2000; two brothers, Kester and Beecher Berry and four sisters, Arlie McGinnis, Audra Sims, Mamie Richmond and Arbory Frye.

Survived by one brother, Okie Melvin Berry of Marie, W.Va.; six sisters; Carmen Berry of Hinton, Laniel Bell Bennett of Beckley, Martha Bennett of Hinton, Connie Lane of Hinton, Corene Sass of Waynesboro, Va. and Priscilla Wheeler of Beckley; a special sister-in-law, Kathleen “Kitty” Logan of Beckley and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services and burial will be 1 p.m. Friday, February 12, 2010, at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with Pastor Butch Honaker officiating.

H. Curtis Duckett

RAINELLE — H. Curtis Duckett, born June 15, 1925, died at his residence, Feb. 6, 2010, following an extended illness.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Anderson Duckett and parents, Claude and Margaret Dickerson Duckett.

Those left to cherish his memory are two sons, Harold Duckett Jr. and Brian Duckett and a daughter, Anita Duckett Osthagen.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m., Feb. 26, 2010, at the Lilly Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Bean officiating.

Carlin K. Harmon, 73, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, at Tuscany House Hospice of Marion County in Summerfield, Fla., following a long illness. He resided in Summerfield, Fla. and formerly lived in Bluefield, Va. and Panama City Beach, Fla., as well as Charleston, Rainelle, Beaver and Beckley, W.Va.

Lottie E. Deck Sturgill

Lottie E. Deck Sturgill, 95, of Sophia, passed away Saturday, February 6, 2010.

Born December 25, 1914 at Crab Orchard; she was the daughter of the late Wiley Smith Deck and Henrietta Snuffer Deck. Lottie was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Lottie loved to sew and make quilts, cook and feed her family, and feed the hummingbirds. She was a homemaker and a Charter Member of the Sophia Freewill Baptist Church. She was a cook for the Raleigh County School System, she and her husband, operated and retired from Sturgill's General Store in Etchison, Md.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years Oran Vernon Sturgill; and numerous brother and sisters: Roy Deck, Lula Bowman, John Deck, Linnie Haley, Dora Deck, Gladys Aldridge, Esta Rhodes, and Aubert Deck.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving son, Lowell Sturgill Sr and wife, Patty Jo of Sterling, Va.; daughter, Karen Parker and husband, Curtis of Crab Orchard; Patricia Franks and husband, Dave Sr. of Jasper, Ala.; James Sturgill and wife, Vicki of Brazil; son, William Sturgill and wife, Ruth of Ronceverte; daughter, Audrey Schneberger and husband, Gerry of Venice, Fla.; son, Keith Sturgill and wife, Leslie of Chester, Va.; daughter, Martha Moomaw and husband, John of Sophia; daughter, Louella Lilly and husband, Gary of Lewisburg; special friend, Margie Davis and husband, Brad of Mt. Airy, Md.; brother-in-law, Fred Sturgill and wife, Bonnie of Scottsdale, Ariz.; brother-in-law, Blaine Sturgill and wife, Betty of Greenbelt, Md.; 21 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great grandchild and one great-great-grandchild on the way.

Services will be 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at the Sophia Freewill Baptist Church, Sophia with Rev. Alan Whitt officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Grandsons will be serving as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family from 1 p.m. until time of the service today at the church.

Frank Terry

MEADOW BRIDGE — Frank Terry, 74, of Backus Road, passed away early Sunday morning, at the home of his daughter in Mount Hope, W.Va., following a short illness. He went home to Heaven to be with his loving wife of 40 years, Anna.

Born June 2, 1935, in Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Walker and Mary Morris Terry. Mr. Terry was the custodian at Meadow Bridge High School and worked up until he got sick and wasn’t able to work. He attended the Danese Holiness Church. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Eloise; four sisters, Lorna, Charlotte, Louise, and Ethel; and two brothers, Woodrow and Andy.

Survivors include two daughters, Tina Young of Mt. Hope, and Diane Harrah of Meadow Bridge; two sons, Frank Terry Jr. of Danese and Mike Terry of Mount Hope; a sister, Margarete Warrick of Erie, Pa.; a brother, Charles Terry of Glen Jean; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010, at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with the Rev. Shirley Fox officiating. Burial will follow in the Ennis Cemetery on Backus Mountain.

James A. Tincher

OAK HILL — James A. Tincher, 63, of Oak Hill, our beloved husband, father, granddad, brother, uncle, and friend, departed this life on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Jim made his peace with God and entered heaven with the doors wide opened. He was a very compassionate person. He helped a lot of people throughout his life and he never expected anything in return. Jim touched many people’s lives. He was loved very much and will be missed. Our lives will never be the same without him. Jim was born on Oct. 9, 1946, to the late Jim and Nellie Tincher of Beckley.

He was also preceded in death by brothers, Bobby Joe Tincher and Charlie Bill Tincher and sisters, Irene Jones, Mildred Miller and Gaye Kelly.

Jim was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1964. He began business as Jim’s Sheet Metal, which became Economy Heating in march 1979, where he was owner and operator until his retirement in 2009, where he handed it over to his wife and children. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Carolyn Sue Tincher; a son, Charles Jason Tincher and his wife, Misty; a daughter, Robin Sue Reece and husband, Billy, and his four precious grandchildren, Hunter Cole and Caitlin McKenzie Reece and Aaron Gage and Dylan Ty Tincher; a brother, Tommy Ray Tincher and wife, Patty of Reidsville, N.C.; and a host of brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

His remains rest at the High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 East Main St., Oak Hill, where the family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday and where the funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Ken Souder officiating. Burial will follow in the Hilltop Union Cemetery, Hilltop.

Pallbearers will be Romie Adkins, Kimer Dravenstott, Billy Reece, Tommy Elder, Charles Adkins and Brian Robinson.

Elnora ‘L’ Woods

HILLTOP — Elnora “L” Woods, age 80, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010 at Hilltop Healthcare Center.

Born May 1, 1929, in Carlisle, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John and Lurena Edding Woods.

Elnora completed her education at Dubois High School, Mt. Hope, W.Va. She was a Childcare Provider, a licensed Missionary, homemaker and devoted mother.

Elnora accepted Jesus Christ at a very young age. She was a member of Emanuel Tabernacle Baptist Church, Beardsfork, W.Va. and she fellowshipped with Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Carlisle, under the pastorship of Rev. Charles Brown, at Hilltop Healthcare Center, she served as President of the Resident Counsel; interviewed by WOAY TV Station as she spoke to Sen. Nick Rahall on behalf of the residents.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John Woods Jr. and Steve Woods; and one sister, Willa Mae Savage.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories her daughter, Geraldine Aikens of Newark, N.J.; a loving sister, Charlotte Martin of Hilltop; three grandsons Kevin (Glenda), Erik and Jermaine, all of Newark; one great-granddaughter, Kelise Aikens of Newark; a special niece who stood by her bedside offering unconditional love and service, Gloria (Charles) Brown and a host of loving nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.

On Friday, February 12, the family will receive visitors at 12 noon with service at 1 p.m. at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Carlisle, with Rev. Charles Brown and Sister Ramona Coles officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.
