Thelma R. Berry

MCROSS — Thelma R. Berry, 80, of McRoss, passed away Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea following a short illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at Smathers Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gary Eisenman officiating. Burial will follow in the Hodam Creek Cemetery in Webster County. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Milton ‘Tom’ Borders

KEYROCK — Milton “Tom” Borders, 73, of Keyrock, passed away Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, in Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a short illness.

A celebration of Tom’s life will be noon Thursday, Feb. 11, at Rock Castle Baptist Church with the Rev. Donald “Doc” Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Ivaliene ‘Ivy’ Dean

HINTON — Ivaliene “Ivy” Dean, 82, of Hinton, formerly of Brooks, died at 10:55 p.m. Saturday at the Summers Nursing and Rehab Center at Hilldale, following a long illness.

Maggie Snow Erskine

SINKS GROVE — Maggie Snow Erskine, 91, of Sinks Grove, passed away Saturday evening, February 6, 2010, at the White Sulphur Springs Center in White Sulphur Springs, following a long illness.

She was born at Zenith, W.Va., July 21, 1918, a daughter of the late Shelton F. and Gracie Crosier Miller.

Mrs. Erskine was a former employee of B.F. Goodrich and a cook at Union High School.

She was well known by many people as being a “helping hand” with her volunteer work for the blood mobile and AARP.

Maggie was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church at Pickaway, Union Chapter # 122 Order of the Eastern Star, a homemaker who loved to cook, sew and quilt, having made some of her clothes and beautiful quilts which she shared with her family.

She also enjoyed gardening, canning and mowing and Weed eating her big yard. Her late husband, Hampton Erskine, teased her that he was going to put headlights on the Weed Eater.

She also enjoyed beekeeping and was featured in a newspaper article as the “Beekeeper Keeps Town Buzzin.”

In addition to her parents and her husband she was preceded in death by three brothers, Arley, Junior and Carl Miller.

Surviving are a son, James Erskine and his wife, Frances, of Sinks Grove; a daughter, Pat McCollum and her husband, Ron, of Bartlett, Tenn.; three grandchildren, John, Deborah and James; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at the Groves Funeral Home Chapel in Union with the Rev. Allen Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery at Sinks Grove.

Friends may call at the Groves Funeral Home in Union from 10 a.m. until service time.

Tracy Lloyd ‘Buster’ Harrah

Tracy Lloyd “Buster” Harrah, 95, of Beaver, passed away Saturday, February 6, 2010, at the Beckley Veterans Memorial Hospital following a short illness.

Born March 30, 1914, at Royal, W.Va., he was the son of the late Thomas and Abby Gail Adkins Harrah.

Other than his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Violet Eardean Caldwell Harrah; three brothers, L.G., Roy, and Jack Harrah; two sisters, Leona “Sally” Burgan, and Olive Harrah Underwood; five half brothers, W.H., A.H. Dolly, Hobert, Theodore “Ted” Harrah, and Lace Redden; and one half sister, Virgie Jordan.

Mr. Harrah was a disabled veteran from the Army, and a member of the D.A.V. Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed fishing, camping, working in his garden and most of all spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Tracy Loren Harrah and wife Linda Karen of Beaver; three granddaughters, Christina Adkins and husband Ronnie of Piney View, Heather Roberts and husband Ronald II of Beaver, and Letha Hernandez and husband Adam of Mt. Hope, and seven precious great-grandchildren. One brother, Virgil Harrah of Media, Pa.; one sister, Elizabeth Louise “Liz” Epperly of Crow, W.Va., and a sister-in-law, Ruby Harrah.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Dennis Burke officiating. Burial will follow in the Grandview Cemetery, Grandview.

Friends may gather with the family one hour prior to the service.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Gail Hill

On Thursday, February 4th, 2010, our wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Gail Hill of Hall Street, Beckley, died at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, following a short illness. She was 62 years of age.

Born Linda Gail Heaton on April 20, 1947, in Charleston, Missouri, Gail, as she was affectionately known all her life, was the 1st of four children born to the late Vernon Leon and Alexandrina Critchon Heaton.

Gail spent her childhood in Cleveland, Ohio, where she graduated from West Tech High School. The “boy next door,” Walter Arnold Hill, was her childhood sweetheart. Gail and Arnold have celebrated 43 years of marriage. A resident of Beckley since 1970, she has resided on Hall Street the past 30 years. Gail was of the Christian faith. Gail’s life was focused on home and family. She has cherished the time she has spent with her eight grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her father and mother-in-law, John and Glenna Hill.

In addition to her beloved Arnold, Gail is the precious Mom of Lisa Minor of Beckley, Jamie Hill and his wife Stephanie of Fairdale, Kim Bolt and her husband Steve of Daniels, and Robbie Hill and his wife Bambi of Beckley; the doting Ma Ma of Johnna Minor, Brittani Bolt, Caila Hill, Mary Kate Bolt, Matthew Hill, Allie Bolt, Leah Hill and Bryant Hill; the sweet sister of Leon Heaton and his wife, Michelle, of Valley City, Ohio, Anne Heaton of Sacramento, Calif., and David Heaton and his wife Lynn of Crab Orchard; the fond sister-in-law of Katy Hill of Tickfaw, Louisiana, and Tracie Walls and her husband DJ of Magnolia, Texas; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 10th, at 1 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. E.G. “Buz” Keller officiating. Burial will follow in the Calfee Cemetery at Mt. Tabor. The family will receive friends today, Tuesday, at the mortuary from 6 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to the services on Wednesday. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

And so to our wife, mother, grandmother and our friend, “We love you still. Though you are gone, YOU live in what we do.”

Frances W. Johnson Kincaid

PAGE — Frances W. Johnson Kincaid, 90, of Page, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 8, 2010, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley. Her beloved husband, James Allen Kincaid Sr., whom she lovingly called “Jamie,” preceded her in death. They were married for 65 years before he went to his heavenly home in 2004.

Born October 27, 1919, at Narrows, Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Virginia Mae Gilliam Johnson.

Frances was a lifelong member of the Kincaid United Methodist Church. She was also a dedicated member of the Oak Hill Chapter #107 O.E.S, having served in several leadership positions including Past Worthy Matron and, after much hard work, completed all the Chairs.

Her main passions were cooking for her family and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Mrs. Kincaid was retired from the United States Postal Service serving as Postmaster at Page.

She is survived by one son, James Allen “Jay” Kincaid Jr. and wife, Mary Jane, of Page; three daughters, Valeda O’Dell and husband, John, of Princeton, Beverly LeNoir and husband, Steve, of Sumter, S.C., and Kathy Selbe and husband, Ben, of Ripley; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be on February 10, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Tyree Funeral Home, in Oak Hill, with Rev. Arolette Stover officiating. Burial will be at Kincaid Cemetery at Kincaid.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Kincaid United Methodist Church, Kincaid.

The family wishes to thank the Summit and Hidden Valley Nursing Home in Oak Hill and the angels at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley for their care and compassion.

RICHWOOD — Joyce “Joy” Herndon Lackey, 61, of Richwood, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010.

Nila A. McGraw

SOUTH CHARLESTON — Nila A. McGraw, 96, of South Charleston, passed away Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010.

Nila was a graduate of McMillan Hospital and retired as a nurse from Thomas Hospital.

Born July 11, 1913, at Graydon, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Alex and Ida McGraw. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Harry McGraw, Herbert McGraw, George McGraw, and Ira McGraw; and two sisters, Mabel Sandige and Mary Peacock.

Survivors include a sister, Marie Fitzwater; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. today, Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Ansted, with Pastor Billy Kincaid officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service today at the funeral chapel.

Janet V. Pritt

BARBERTON, Ohio — Janet V. Pritt, 68, formerly of Quinwood, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, January 19, 2010, at her home, with her husband, children, family and Pastor by her side.

Janet was born March 12, 1941, in Quinwood to the late Leo A. and Beatrice Hizer McMann.

Janet lived in Medina, Ohio, before moving to Barberton 37 years ago. She was a homemaker and a member of the Life Tabernacle in Rittman, Ohio, where she loved and attended faithfully. She received her GED Diploma June 16, 1988. She served as secretary of the PTA in the ’70s and ’80s. She enjoyed spending time with her family, tea parties, crossword puzzles, reading the Bible, Crafting and Photography.

She married Robert D. “Bob” Pritt on July 11, 1958. It was a happy occasion for her and Bob when they repeated their vows for their 50th anniversary on July 19, 2008.

Memories of Janet will be forever cherished by her survivors: her husband of fifty-one and a half years, Robert D. “Bob” Pritt of Barberton, Ohio; a son, Douglas Pritt of Barberton, Ohio; and a daughter, Dina Lynn Kinney, her husband Norman, and stepgranddaughter Sara of Louisville, Ohio. Siblings and their spouses, brother, Gerald and Alma McMann; sisters, Nadine Guilliams, Wanda and Rozzle O’Dell all of Quinwood, Elma Nutter of Russellville, Betty and Dan Nutter of Canvas, Shirley and Freddie Parkins of Ansted, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Services were held 10 a.m. Friday, January 22, 2010, at Life Tabernacle in Rittman with Pastors Ed G. Nichols and Freddie Parkins Sr. Officiating. Burial was at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.

Margaret C. Stone

Margaret C. Stone, loving wife of Paul F. Jones, passed from this life to eternal rest on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at the Charleston Area Medical Center after a short illness. Mrs. Stone was the daughter of the late Floyd C. and Margaret Gray Coffman. She was born in Lewisburg on June 30, 1923.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, A.J. Stone Sr.; her second husband, Sam B. Shawver; her brother, F.C. Coffman Jr. She is survived by her beloved husband, Paul F. Jones; her son, A.J. Stone Jr. of Hampton, Va., her grandson, A.J. Stone III, his wife, Natasha, and their son, Lukas, of Land O Lakes, Fla.; her grandson, Dr. Terrance H. Stone, his wife, Paige, and their children, Samuel and Isabel of Tampa, Fla.; and her granddaughter, Alia Margaret Stone of Burtonsville, Md. She is survived by three sisters, including Ova A. Coffman of Lewisburg, Georgia Gray Hayes of Lewisburg, and Laura Davis and her husband, Harlis, of Myrtle Beach, S.C. She is also survived by three stepsons, Randy Jones and his wife, Joyce, of Mount Lake Terrace, Wash., Doug Jones and his wife, Kim, of Virginia Beach, Va., and the Rev. Frank Jones, his wife, Joan, and their children Jared, Travis and Alicia of Saltillo, Mexico, and a stepdaughter, Lois Mooney of Cumberland, Md.

Mrs. Stone was a graduate of Greenbrier College for Women and Concord College. She was a teacher in Greenbrier County for 40 years, starting her career by teaching in one-room elementary schools. She served 25 years as a 4-H leader. She was the Superintendent of the Rabbit Department of the West Virginia State Fair for 50 years. Mrs. Stone was a lifelong resident of Greenbrier County. She was a member of the Lewisburg Methodist Church and attended the Shuck Memorial Baptist Church. She was a life member of the WV Association of Retired School Employees, a life member of the American Iris Society, a member of the Greenbrier Valley Chapter of Senior Friends, a member of the AARP, and President of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 69 of Lewisburg.

A viewing will take place today Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg. The funeral services will be 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at Morgan Funeral Home, Lewisburg. Burial will follow in Rosewood Cemetery.

Lottie E. Deck Sturgill

Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her and so that he shall have no need for spoil. Lottie E. Deck Sturgill, 95, of Sophia, passed away Saturday, February 6, 2010.

Born December 25, 1914, at Crab Orchard, she was the daughter of the late Wiley Smith Deck and Henrietta Snuffer Deck. Lottie was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Lottie loved to sew and make quilts, cook and feed her family, and feed the hummingbirds. She was a homemaker and a Charter Member of the Sophia Freewill Baptist Church. She was a cook for the Raleigh County School System; she and her husband operated and retired from Sturgill’s General Store in Etchison, Md.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Oran Vernon Sturgill; and numerous brothers and sisters: Roy Deck, Lula Bowman, John Deck, Linnie Haley, Dora Deck, Gladys Aldridge, Esta Rhodes, and Aubert Deck.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving son, Lowell Sturgill Sr. and wife, Patty Jo, of Sterling, Va.; daughter, Karen Parker and husband, Curtis, of Crab Orchard; Patricia Franks and husband, Dave Sr., of Jasper, Ala.; James Sturgill and wife, Vicki, of Brazil; son, William Sturgill and wife, Ruth, of Ronceverte; daughter, Audrey Schneberger and husband, Gerry, of Venice, Fla.; son, Keith Sturgill and wife, Leslie, of Chester, Va.; daughter, Martha Moomaw and husband, John, of Sophia; daughter, Louella Lilly and husband, Gary, of Lewisburg; special friend, Margie Davis and husband, Brad, of Mt. Airy, Md.; brother-in-law, Fred Sturgill and wife, Bonnie, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; brother-in-law, Blaine Sturgill and wife, Betty, of Greenbelt, Md.; 21 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild and one great-great-grandchild on the way.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at the Sophia Freewill Baptist Church, Sophia, with Rev. Alan Whitt officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Grandsons will be serving as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family from 1 p.m. until time of the service Wednesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations of sympathy be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Sophia Freewill Baptist Church Ladies Auxiliary.

Lenora Castilee White

SMITHERS — Lenora Castilee White, age 85, of Smithers, died February 7, 2010, at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston.

She was born April 21, 1924, in Raleigh County, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late Roy and Blanch Newman Lester.

She was a member of the Smithers First Church of Christ.

Surviving are her daughters, Linda VanMeter and her husband Robert of Cannelton and Brenda VanWart of Pratt; sisters, Daphnia Caudill of Louisburg, N.C., Erma Brown and her husband Howard of Bradley and Joyce Terreo and her husband Toney of Napierville, Ill.; grandchildren Kathryn VanMeter and Billy VanWart; and six great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday February 11, 2010, at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Rev. Kim Kirby officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Friends may call from 7 until 9 on Wednesday at the funeral home.
