Phyllis S. Hurley

On Friday, December 6th, 2013, our most cherished, Phyllis S. Hurley of the Cherry Hill Addition, Beaver, went home to be with the Lord. Phyllis has battled several medical illnesses the past four years. She was in her 85th year.

The first of five children, Phyllis Sutherland was born on Oct. 1st, 1928, at Delbarton. She was the daughter of Frank and Virginia McCoy Sutherland. Her sister, Sally Eller, and brother, James Sutherland, have preceded her in death. Her brothers, Frank and his wife, Helen, survive of Stafford, VA, as well as Fred of Cobb Island, MD.

When we remember the life of Phyllis Hurley it will be the love of family and her dedication to being a devoted wife to her late husband, James M. Hurley III, a loving mother to her son, Jim, and the faithful and loving caregiver to her daughter, Carolyn. When Carolyn was born, she was diagnosed with many medical challenges. Her life expectancy was four years. Phyllis made the commitment that she would spend the rest of her life taking care of Carolyn, “Her Angel.” Due to Phyllis providing outstanding care 24/7, Carolyn continues to live today at the age of 58. Phyllis would often say, “I just want to live five minutes longer than Carolyn.” Sadly, that was not meant to be. Now, Phyllis is Carolyn’s “Guardian Angel” from above. Phyllis Hurley personified the true definition of being a real mother. Her commitment to her precious daughter has not gone unnoticed by her family and friends.

In addition to Carolyn, Phyllis leaves to cherish her memory her son, James M. Hurley IV and his wife, Nancy, of North Palm Beach, Florida; her granddaughters, Jill Corbin and her husband Daryl and Season Zeigler and her husband, Tripp; four great-grandchildren, Kendall, McCoy, Cooper and Wells.

On Monday, Dec. 9th, at 1 p.m. we will honor the life of Phyllis Hurley with a “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastors Betty Lusk and Paul Stadelman will be officiating. Phyllis will be laid to rest in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the service hour. Raymond Maddy, Charlie Burns, Mike Phipps, Clearance Steele, Kenny Thompson and Brandon Thompson will serve as pallbearers. The family suggests donations of sympathy can be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, PO Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802.

Phyllis’ family would like to publicly thank her special friends, Cherry Hill neighbors and her wonderful caregivers for all their support.
