Patricia L. Ashworth

CHARLESTON — Patricia Lou Ashworth of Charleston, formerly of Beckley, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013.

The daughter of the late Earl McCoy Robinson and Mabel Pickett Robinson, “Patti Lou” Robinson was born May 5, 1926, in Moundsville, W.Va. She grew up in Moundsville and attended Moundsville High School. She graduated with honors from West Virginia University, majoring in Language Arts. She also received her Master’s degree from WVU in 1948.

On Sept. 2, 1950, Patricia married John C. Ashworth, who also grew up in Moundsville. The couple moved to Beckley in 1950 and John entered into law practice with his older brother, Robert. Patricia and John were active in many civic and social organizations in the Beckley area throughout their lives. The couple had two daughters, Robin and Melinda. Judge John Ashworth died in 1995.

Mrs. Ashworth taught at Waynesburg College, West Virginia University and the former Beckley College. She was Chair of the English Department, served as Dean of Women and Dean of Students at Beckley College. She is fondly remembered by many of her former students as a kind but tenacious professor who expected the best from her students. She retired from Beckley College in 1985.

Mrs. Ashworth was a member of the United Methodist Temple, the Women’s Club of Beckley, Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Sorority and WVU Emeritus Society. She was an excellent cook, a skilled hostess, a loyal friend to many and an extremely organized and efficient person. She was a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother. Above all, she was always a lady.

Mrs. Ashworth is survived by her daughters Robin Ashworth Tice of St. Mary’s, W.Va., and Melinda Ashworth Kiss and her husband, Bob, of Charleston, W.Va. She is also survived by five grandchildren: John David Tice and his wife, Jessica, Jared Tice, Laura Tice, Cameron Kiss and Carter Kiss. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren: Clara Tice, Ella Tice and Benjamin Tice and several nieces and nephews and her beloved neighbors, Mary Ann and Don Wise.

Services for Mrs. Ashworth will be Saturday, Dec. 7th, at 11 a.m. at Rose & Quesenberry Funeral Home in Beckley, the Rev. G. Randall Adkins officiating. Friends may gather with the family on Friday, Dec. 6th, from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour before the service on Saturday.

Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley.
