William ‘Bill’ Adkins

William C. Adkins, of Shady Spring, died on Thursday, July 12th, 2013, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following an extended illness. He was 74 years of age.

An only child, “Bill,” as he was affectionately known all his life, was born William Clarence Adkins on April 3rd, 1939, in Raleigh County. He was the son of the late Romey Clarence and Josephine Bane Adkins.

A lifelong resident of Shady Spring, Bill was a graduate of Shady Spring High School, Class of 1957. He furthered his studies at Beckley College. Bill was the office manager for Industrial Electric Corporation. He served in this capacity for 35 years. A faithful member of All Souls Episcopal Church at Shady Spring, Bill was the church treasurer. Upon the closure of All Souls, Bill transferred his membership to St. Stephens Episcopal Church here in Beckley.

Although he had no family of his own, Bill was blessed to have his dear friends, Rev. John Rinehart and his wife, Shelia, and James Sears, in his life.

Funeral services will be Sunday, July 14th, at 2 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. The Revs. Jon White, Adeeb Khalil and John Rinehart will be officiating.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the service hour. A private burial will be held in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Shirley Ann (Meade) Chizmar

Shirley Ann (Meade) Chizmar, 75, of Beckley, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2013.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, with Pastor Rodney Allen and Pastor Tim Gonzales officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Dorene Clendenin

GAULEY BRIDGE — Dorene Clendenin, 58, of Gauley Bridge, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2013, following a long illness.

Dorene was born Feb. 23, 1955; she was the daughter of Walter Lee Parker of Ramsey and the late Mary Madeline Clark Parker.

She was a disabled custodian for Fayette County Schools and a member of Fresh Oil Church of Jesus Christ in Marmet.

Survivors, other than her Dad, are her husband, Wallace Clendenin; two sons, Wallace L. Clendenin of Edmond and Bobby Clendenin of Victor; five grandchildren, Taylor, Tyler and  Christopher of Edmond; Kaylon and Jordan of Oak Hill; seven sisters and five brothers: Phyllis Clendenin, Linda Lance, Brenda Harris, Arlean Dorman, Julie Legg, Christine Clendenin, Loretta Parker, Lawrence Parker, William Parker, Garland Parker, Russell Parker and Lee Parker.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2013, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted, with the Rev. Thomas Sergent officiating. Burial will follow in the Martin Cemetery at Horseshoe.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service Sunday at the funeral home.

Richard Lee ‘Ricky’ Cook

Richard Lee “Ricky” Cook, 60, of Glen Daniel, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 11, 2013, at the Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, after a long illness.

He was born March 25, 1953, at Arnett, a son of the late Donnie and Mary Pyatt Cook.

He enjoyed reading comic books, drawing, and enjoyed watching wresting.

He is survived by his loving wife, Debbie Cook; two stepchildren, William Weymouth and Angela Weymouth; a sister, Patricia Pettry and husband, Michael; a brother, Jerry Cook and wife, Brenda; a granddaughter, Hannah Bowers; several nieces and nephews Melissa, Jerry, Katrina, Kimberly, Michael, Tammy and Susie; several great-nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2013, at the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. David Cook officiating. Singer will be Ashley Webb. Burial will follow in the Pettry Cemetery at Pine Branch Road in Arnett.

Friends may call two hours before the service on Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Donald Keith Ewing

Donald Keith Ewing, 43, of Beckley, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2013, following a short illness.

Born June 1, 1970, in Beckley, he was the son of Ronald Ewing and Janet Richmond.

Donald was a veteran of the United States Army; he served in the national guard and the Army reserves. He loved riding motorcycles, spending time with his family and friends and listening to music and being outdoors. Donald was a loyal son to his parents; he helped them whenever they needed him; he was always there to help them.

In addition to his parents those left to cherish his memory include his daughter Mikayla Ewing, and his son Little Ronnie Ewing, his brother Kevin Ewing and his wife Angie of Salem, Va., and many beloved friends.

Memorial services for Donald will be held Sunday, July 14, 2013, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time Sunday at the funeral home.

Macie Irene Farruggia

Macie Irene Farruggia, age 73, of Rhodell, passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2013, at the home of her sister Molly Mullins of Meade, W.Va.

Born on March 5, 1940, in Mullens, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Phillip Dunford and Mary Green Dunford.

Mrs. Farruggia was a homemaker, and attended the Cornerstone Freewill Baptist Church at Crab Orchard. She had made Rhodell and Meade her home for the greater part of her life. Mrs. Farruggia enjoyed spending time with her sister Molly and also with her grandchildren, using her Ipod, working puzzles, and watching TV soap operas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel Farruggia, by a stepson, Charles V. Farruggia, by sisters Betty Hensley and Helen Richmond, and by an infant sister, Edna Dunford.

Survivors include her children, Carmela Farruggia of Rhodell, with whom she had made her home, Sherry Richmond and her husband Danny of Rhodell (she and her sister Molly had also raised their nephew Danny Richmond as a son); stepsons, Billy Joe Farruggia and his wife Ann of Beckley, and Jimmy Farruggia and his wife Pat of Rhodell. A daughter-in-law, Sue Farruggia of Lexington, N.C.

Her sister and best friend, Molly Mullins of Meade; a brother Ernest Dunford and his wife Gail of Egeria, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Manny Farruggia and Brandy Richmond, and a host of stepgrandchildren. A special niece Kathy Lilly and her husband Eddie of Meade, along with a host of other nieces and nephews, are also surviving.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Sunday, July 14, 2013, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Roger Tolliver officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Friends may visit with the family from noon until service time on Sunday.

Pallbearers will be Pete Smith, Dwayne Austin, Barry Lilly, Cody Wilson, Gary and Travis Mills.

Ernest Fazio

OAK HILL — Ernest Fazio, 90, of Oak Hill, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at Main Street Care, Hinton, following a short illness.

Born March 12, 1923, at Anawalt, W.Va., the son of the late Dominique Fazio and Josephine Fazio.

He served his country in the Navy during WWII.

He was of the Protestant faith.

Ernest had a Master’s Degree in Business Education and he was devoted to teaching. He was a former Professor and Night School Administrator at Beckley College and a former teacher in the public school system in Fayette County.

In December 2008, he was preceded in death by his wife Jewell Fazio.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter Terri Fleshman and her husband Mike of Hinton, and one brother Ralph Fazio of South Carolina.

His remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel where the funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday with Pastor Robbie Merritt officiating and where the family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of service. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park.

Elizabeth M. Hoskins

MALDEN — Elizabeth Moore Hoskins, 75, of Malden, went to her Heavenly home on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

She was born in East Beckley on April 17, 1938, the daughter of the late Owen W. and Maye Davis Moore. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Sherrill A. Hoskins; and her devoted daughter, Trecia C. Peterson.

Betty graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, Concord College and was a member of Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority. She was retired from WV Department of Motor Vehicles with 28 years of service.

She was a member of Putney Memorial Presbyterian Church and was a member of Saints & Sinners Red Hat Society.

Surviving are brother, Norman D. Moore (Brenda J. Whitehead); son-in-law, W L “Squeak” Peterson; granddaughter, Kristy Peters (James); great-grandson, Corey Peters; special grandchildren, Paige and Logan Peterson; nephews, Derek Moore (Mary) Katherine, Davis, Caleb and Doug Moore (Annette) Tauni, Briar, Bailey Sage; a longtime family friend, Stephanie White-Washington; and a host of friends, neighbors and relatives whose lives she had touched and those who touched hers.

The funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, July 13, 2013, at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home, Malden, with Dr. Jesse Waggoner officiating. The burial will follow the service in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Family and friends will gather for the visitation two hours prior to service on Saturday at the funeral home.

The family would like to send a special thanks to CAMC Memorial Hospital and Hubbard Hospice House for the care and love provided in her last days.

Caden Luther Kesner

Caden Luther Vandevender Kesner, infant son of Tasha Lynn Vandevender and Brian Michael Kesner, was stillborn July 10, 2013.

Services will be 5 p.m. Sunday, July 14, at the Thornwood Community Church, Thornwood, with the Rev. William Vandevender officiating. Interment will follow in Vandevender Cemetery, Thornwood. The family will receive their family and friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Freda Ruth Pomeroy Nottingham

KOPPERSTON — Freda Ruth Pomeroy Nottingham, 85, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2013.

Born August 13, 1927, in Helen, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John Pomeroy and Virginia Bailey Pomeroy.

Freda graduated from Oceana High School in 1944 and was elected as Miss Oceana. She served as the Postmaster of Kopperston Post Office for 26 years, following in her mother’s footsteps.

She was a member of Kopperston Presbyterian Church and served as Treasurer for many years. She held numerous offices with the Eastern Star and was both a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader.

Freda was a gifted artisan, an excellent seamstress, photographer, avid reader, and loved all types of music. She loved fun and people. She doted on her pets. Friendship was very important to her and her friends were family to her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Robin M. Hess; a son, Eugene “Skipper” Nottingham; two sisters, Phylis Padrick and Florence Lambert; one brother, John W. “Bill” Pomeroy; and many friends whom she considered family.

Survivors include a daughter, Connie N. Toler and husband, James; a son, Barry P. Nottingham and wife, Pat; grandchildren, Gina Kohler Burks and companion, Michael Maynard, David Marshall, Tommy Marshall, Ashford Toler, Alisa Hess, Issac Hess and wife, Kacey, Darelle Toler King and husband, Timothy, Michelle Toler Puzio and husband, Larry; great-grandchildren, Adam Burks, Destiny Burgess, Bowie Kuehl, Hadley Hess, Lorean and Ryan King, and Michale Puzio; a great-great-granddaughter, Anabel Ruth, who will arrive later this month; her God daughter, Ona Mitchell Huspeth; her beloved nieces and nephews; and dear friends, John and Susan Mitchell, Tammy Green, David and Joy Mayberry, Calvin and Betty Blankenship, Pearl Tipper and Judy Trent.

The family would like to thank Rachel Stover, NP, Hospice of Southern West Virginia and Ashford Toler, who assisted his mother by providing tender care for his grandmother.

Evelyn May Reed

ALDERSON — Evelyn May Reed, 90, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 11, 2013, at the Genesis Health Care Center in White Sulphur Springs.

Born May 30, 1923, in Pence Springs and was the daughter of the late George and Sally Spinks Ayers.

Mrs. Reed was a lifelong resident of Alderson, member of the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church in Alderson, member of the Ladies Auxiliary and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond L. Reed; sister, Marie Miller; and stepdaughter, Sonya Hambrick.

Survivors include two sons, Steve Red of Springfield, Ohio, and Raymond Reed Jr. and wife, Bonnie, of Alderson; 11 grandchildren, Teresa Reiman, Tim Reed, Deanna Shaw, Jennifer Reed, Shawn Reed, Donald Hambrick, Kenneth Hambrick, Brad Hambrick, Kathy Hambrick, G.W. Serrino, Sibby Duff; and a special friend, Mary Lou Presock; several great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren, and great-great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2013, at the Longanacre Funeral Home, Ft. Spring, with the Rev. William J. Bryan officiating. Burial will follow in the Campground Cemetery at Creamery, W.Va.

SANFORD, N.C. — Jacqueline Saul, 72, of Sanford, formerly of Coal City, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2013.
