James Lowell ‘Butch’ Collins
James Lowell “Butch” Collins, 65, of Crab Orchard, passed away April 10, 2013, in Durham, North Carolina.
James was preceded in death by his parents, James and Iline Collins.
Those left to cherish his memory include his sister, Sandra Kay Collins Meador and husband Thomas of Mechanicsville, MD; brother, Ray “Ziggy” Collins, of Crab Orchard; four nephews and one niece.
James liked to fish and hunt; he enjoyed target shooting with the Beckley Police; he worked at Wal-Mart in MacArthur.
A graveside service will be held 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, with the Rev. Robert A. Day officiating.
Friends may gather with the family from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley.
Military Honors will be performed by the American Legion Post #32 Honor Guard, of Beckley.

RONCEVERTE — Robert Lee Hedrick, 83, passed away Friday, April 12, 2013, in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, after a short illness.
He was born August 26, 1929, in Fort Spring and was the son of the late Ira Lee and Pearl Neal Hedrick.
Lifelong resident of Ronceverte and retired Heavy Equipment Operator for Roberts and Fowler Const. Co.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Betty Cox Hedrick, one brother, Johnny Hedrick, and one sister, Beatrice Hedrick.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at the Longanacre Funeral Home Chapel, Fairlea, with Rev. Mike Estep officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenbrier Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Lewisburg.
Friends and family may call from noon till time of the service, 2 p.m. Tuesday, at the Longanacre Funeral Home, Fairlea.

Shella ‘Berthel’ Kelley Jr.
Shella “Berthel” Kelley Jr., age 57, of Whitby, WV, passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington following a sudden illness.
Born on December 2, 1955, in Beckley, he was preceded in death by his parents Shella “Sonny” Kelley and Mildred Mae Winston Kelley. He was also preceded in death by a brother Richard Kelley and a sister-in-law Evelyn Lilly and her husband Ronald Lilly.
Berthel loved fishing, hunting, riding his four-wheeler, camping, and spending time with his grandchildren, family, and friends.
He attended Stoco High School and worked construction. Berthel also drove a truck most of his life until he became disabled.
His survivors include his loving wife of 36 years, Jean Hargus Kelley, three daughters, Katherine Robin Hatcher and her husband Danny of Jonben, WV, April Cox and her husband John of Jonben, WV, Jamie Brandstetter and her husband Greg of Danese, WV.
Seven grandchildren his pride and joy whom he loved with all of his heart: Ryan, Jacob, Breanna, Daniel, Jeremiah, Joshua, Jayden, and one on the way. Two great-grandchildren: Adrianne and Justin.
A brother, David Utt of Shady Spring, WV, Six sisters, Patricia Vaughn and her husband, Doug, of South Shore, Ky.; Stella James and her husband Robert of Epperly Hill, WV, Victoria Neuzum and her husband Richard of Epperly Hill, WV, Violet Thompson of Midway, WV, Barbara Keeling of Asheboro, NC, Gayla Smith of Daniels, WV, Sisters-in-law, Kathy Kelley of Odd, WV, Julie Hensley and her husband Donald of Fireco, WV, Mary Canterbury and her husband Johnny of Coal City, WV, Carolyn Rollins, and her husband Jim of Vernon, Florida, A brother-in-law, Thomas Meadows and his wife Faye of Dickson, TN. Numerous nieces, nephews, and friends also survive.
According to his wishes, Berthel will be cremated. Family and friends may gather Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at 3:30 p.m. in a Celebration of his life at the home of his daughter, April Cox, 318 Bacontown Road, Jonben, WV.

TALCOTT — Barger Basil Meadows Jr., 54, of Talcott died Thursday, April 11, 2013.

Jackie Norman Pate
Jackie Norman “Jack” Pate, age 71, of Glen Morgan, WV, passed away on Friday morning, April 12, 2013.
Born on February 15, 1942, at Glen Morgan, he was the son of the late John W. Pate Sr. and Ethel Phillips Pate.
Jackie was preceded in death by a brother, John W. Pate Jr., a sister, Patty Pate Chambers, a grandson, William Shane Redden, a brother-in-law, Robert D. Francis, father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Louise Boothe, 5 nephews, 1 great-nephew, and his first wife Margie Cuckler Pate.
Jackie is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 15 years, Dreama Boothe Whisman Pate, his loving daughter that he referred to as his baby girl, Elisa M. Pate Redden and her husband Willie of Ghent, his treasured grandsons, aka “Tom and Tom” Travis Redden and his wife Holly of Ghent, and Joshua Redden and his longtime sweetheart Korey Quesenberry of Beckley, and a great-granddaughter Addison Grace Redden, Papa’s “youngin.”
His stepson and dear friend, Jeffrey A. Whisman and his companion Kim Allen of Glen Morgan.
Three stepgranddaughters whom he adored, Brianna Lynn Whisman (his riding buddy), Brittany Nicole Whisman, and Rayven Faith Whisman. Three brothers, James Robert Pate and his wife Shirley of Shady Spring, Tom Pate and his wife Joyce of Florida, and James Earl Pate and his wife Sue of Crow. Two sisters, Etheline Dorsey and her husband Fred of Daniels, and Shirley Foley and her husband Lowell of Daniels. Three sisters-in-law, Shirley Boothe Francis, Anna Boothe Hall and her husband Larry, and Connie Boothe Robertson and her husband Steve, a brother-in-law, James W. Boothe and his wife Bobbi.
Jackie lived his entire life in Glen Morgan, and graduated from Shady Spring High School. After graduation he followed in his Dad’s and older brother’s footsteps and went to work as a brakeman for the C&O Railroad. He also owned his own contracting business P.P.S. Construction. He later became a conductor and in 1997 he became the CEO for the C&O Employees Hospital Association in Clifton Forge, Virginia. Jackie retired November 5, 2012, after 15 years of service for the Hospital Association. Jackie was a member of the Board of Directors for many years and was president for over 4 years for the WV Horsemen’s Association. He was a lifetime member of the UTU.
Jackie’s number one love was his grandchildren, his stepgrandchildren, and most of all his great-grandchild. His other hobbies included training, and showing horses with family and friends at his Diamond J. Stables. Jackie was of the Baptist faith.
A Celebration of Jackie’s Life will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Rodney Allen officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley. Friends may call at the funeral home 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday. Pallbearers will be Travis Redden, Joshua Redden, Jeffrey Whisman, Billy Pate, Daniel Foley, and Michael Pate. Honorary pallbearers will be Carroll Simpkins, Mike Smith, Paul Rose, and Jim Keeney.
