Douglas A. Bowles

HINTON — Douglas A. Bowles, 63, of Hinton, died at 8:40 a.m. Friday, June 7, 2013 at Summers Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at Hilldale, following a long illness.

Born March 1, 1950 in Hinton, he was the son of the late Wendell A. and Lillie Jane Williams Bowles.

Doug worked for various businesses in Hinton for many years as a custodian. He was a lifelong resident of Summers County and attended the Hinton Gospel Tabernacle as long as his health permitted.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Thomas Dale Bowles and grandparents, Joseph Green and Gertha Belle Williams.

Survivors include three brothers, Billy Joe Bowles of Jumping Branch, James Robert Bowles of Pipestem and J. D. Bowles of North Carolina; one sister, Lillie Marie Cadle of Princeton. Uncle, John Williams of Hinton, aunts, Jennie Lee Ellison of Nimitz and Nellie Jo Mason of Hinton. Nephew, Joseph Manuel Bowles of Pipestem and nieces, Mary Jane and  husband Larry Miller of Princeton and Kayla Renee Bowles of Princeton. Great nephew, J.C. Miller and great niece, Mena Miller.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 10, 2013 at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton, with Pastor Bob Combs officiating. Burial will follow in Lilly-Crews Cemetery at Nimitz.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of services on Monday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be, Tim O’Farrell, Garry Wheeler, Danny Foster, Phillip Harvey and John Clark.

Betty June Dilley Brammer

Betty June Dilley Brammer, age 87 of Beaver, passed away on Friday, June 7, 2013 at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born  at Glen Morgan, W.Va., on May 10, 1926, where she was also raised, she was the daughter of the late Dewey Brown Dilley and Goldie Mae Bachus Dilley.

Mrs. Brammer retired in 1988 after 24 years of service in the WV State Tax Department, as an accounting auditor.

She had made her home in Beaver since 1985, and was a member of the Perry Memorial United Methodist Church at Shady Spring. Mrs. Brammer was very active in the United Methodist Women, and was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an avid reader and enjoyed many arts and crafts. She also was a 1944 of graduate of Shady Spring High School, where she was the head cheerleader.

Mrs. Brammer was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Edsel Martin Brammer, who died in 1981.  

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her children: Randall Martin Brammer of Philadelphia, Pa., and Pamela Sue Brammer Ford and her husband Larry of Shady Spring; three sisters, Jean Ann Dilley Warden and her husband David of Palm Harbor, Fla.,  Patricia Sue Dilley of Glen Morgan, and  Dr. Boots Dilley of Huntington, W.Va.

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Betty June Brammer on Monday, June 10, 2013 at noon at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel, with Rev. Scott Mayberry officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, WV.

Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. until service time on Monday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Carl Argabrite, John Batchelor, Jerry Carter, Don Crook, Garland Plumley, and Pete Torrico.   

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Perry Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1264 Shady Spring, WV, 25918 in memory of Mrs. Brammer.

Clorine Brogan

On June 7, 2013, Clorine Brogan, a coal miner’s daughter, wife of a disabled WWII veteran, mother of four, grandmother of seven, great grandmother of eight, passed and is now in heaven with loved ones and relatives who have gone on before.

Born on August 22, 1927 in the coal camp of Krebs, W.Va., she was the daughter of William Silas Scarbro and Mary Abigail Wriston Scarbro.

The second sister of 12 children, she was affectionately called “Sis”. Mrs. Brogan was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers, and three sisters. Four of those brothers having died from the Paint Creek flood of 1932.

Mrs. Brogan married Deskar Lewis Brogan on January 4, 1947. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before his death in April 2007.

She is survived by their children, Billie Lorraine Wood and her husband Jim of Grandview, Millard Lewis Brogan and his wife Janie of Houston, Texas, James Lee Brogan and his wife Shery of Athens, and Roger Gale Brogan of Prosperity.

Her beloved grandchildren, William Stuart Farley Jr., Lewis Scott Brogan, Kevin Patrick Farley and his wife Rebecca, Richard Warren Brogan, Nicole Brogan-Pavleck and her husband Guy, Kelley Lorraine Brogan, and Anna Gale Brogan.

Great grandchildren are Matthew Wayne Farley, Rebecca Marie Farley, Mary Abigail Farley, Noah Patrick Farley, Jacob William Farley, Niam Juliet Pavleck, and Darcy Aurora Baugh.  Soon to arrive is Rian Noelle Pavleck.

One brother, Loie Edward Scarbro of Florida, three sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews. Her guardian angels were Terry Rojas, Rebecca Farley, Erica Ward, Martha Goble, Mary Farley, and Nikki Guest of Hospice.

Mrs. Brogan was a lifelong member of the Stanaford Missionary Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 1 p.m. with Rev. George Wood officiating. Burial will follow at the Lively Cemetery at Sod, W.Va. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the service time of 1 p.m.

Her grandsons and great grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Wanda EvaNell Reed Elste

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — Wanda EvaNell (Reed) Elste, 75, of Prestonsburg, passed away on Friday, June 7, 2013.

Services will be conducted on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at the Endicott Freewill Baptist Church near Endicott, Ky., at 2 p.m. with Mark Hunt and Roger Music officiating. Burial will follow in the Bennie Sellards Cemetery at Endicott.

Friends may call at the church after 6  p.m. on Saturday.

Howard Leon Ford

OAK HILL — Howard Leon Ford, 91, of Oak Hill, died Friday, June 7, 2013 at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.

Born May 12, 1922 at Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Duffy and Nora Cox Ford.

He was the former owner of the Jeep franchise in Oak Hill and retired from Blackburn Ford in Oak Hill.

Leon was a member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church. He was a 1942 graduate of Oak Hill High School where he played football. He was a 50 year plus Charter member of the Oak Hill Civitan Club and a member of the Oak Hill/Collins High School Alumni Association. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II and a member of the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lena Wire Ford; three brothers, Ralph D. Ford, Jimmy Ford and Harry Ford; three sisters, Evelyn Pronko, Juanita Kendall and Frances Bannister.

Leon is survived by several nephews and nieces and also by several great nieces and great nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, June 10, 2013 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Dr. Charles D. Miller officiating. Burial will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill with military honors provided by Oak Hill VFW Post #3110.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Ralph D. Ford, Jr., Brian K. Ford, Harry L. Ford, Stephen S. Ford, Brandon C. Ford and Edward Ford.

Charles Edward Francis

Mr. Charles Edward Francis, 92, of Beckley, died Thursday, June 6, 2013.

Born June 15, 1920 in Slab Fork, W.Va., he was the son of the late Othea Hayden and Gladys Francis Smith.

Mr. Francis was a coal miner for 41 years and retired from the Slab Fork Coal Co./Phillips Machinery and a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy L. Francis; sons, Charles E. Francis Jr. and Alvin D. Francis and daughter, Barbara Booker.

Left to cherish memories are his son, Harry J. Francis of Detroit, Mich. and daughter, Ann “Toyia” Miller of Beckley and a host of grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be 12 noon, Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Heart of God Ministries, 1703 S. Kanawha St., Beckley, with Bishop Fred T. Simms officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Meloney Marie Castle Franklin, 65, of Beckley, formerly of Oceana, passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2013.

Terry Wayne Hunter

RUPERT — Terry Wayne Hunter, 59, of Shawver’s Crossing, Rupert, passed away Saturday, June 8, 2013, in the Charleston Area Medical Center.

Born September 11, 1953 in Ronceverte, he was the son of the late Marvin and Murlyne Souder Hunter.

Terry worked for Leckie Coal Company for 20 years; the West Virginia Department of Highways for nine years and was a Mason and a Shriner. He was an antique car enthusiast. Terry enjoyed hunting and fishing when he was able and he loved farming.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years Mitzi Anderson Hunter; his son Nathaniel Hunter of Rupert; his father-in-law Maynard Anderson of Caldwell; two brothers-in-law Kent Anderson of Maxwelton and Joe Anderson of Caldwell and one niece.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 10, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Inc. with Rev. William “Bill” Cruise officiating. Burial will follow in the End of the Trail Cemetery at Clintonville.

Walter Churchill Jones

HINTON — Walter Churchill Jones, 69, of Hinton, formerly of Sophia, entered into eternal rest, Friday, June 7, 2013 at his home following a long illness.

Born September 23, 1948, at Sophia, he was the son of the late Charlie C. and Myrtle Polk Jones.

Walter attended Sophia High School, and was a construction worker for Bill Toner Construction. He was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Preceding him in death include his brother, Melvin Jones.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Wanda Jones at home; one stepdaughter, Sharon Fox and companion, Luther Darren Lanier of Pence Springs; one step granddaughter, Shelley Grace Lanier of Pence Springs; one sister, Mavis Brewster of Beckley and numerous friends and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 10, 2013 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, with Pastor Dana Stalnaker officiating. Burial will follow in the Hot Coal Cemetery at Sophia.

Friends may call at the funeral from 1 p.m. until time of services on Monday.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Myrtle Jourdan

Myrtle Combs Jourdan, 79, of Arnett, passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2013.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 11th at 1 p.m. at the Flat Branch Church. Burial will follow in the Massey Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the church and one hour prior to the services on Tuesday.
