Roger Lee Akers

MAYNOR — Roger Lee Akers, 68, of Maynor, died on Monday, January 27, 2014, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born August 19, 1945, at Summerlee, W.Va., he was the son of the late Bill and Sadie Nutter Akers.

Roger was a coal miner having worked for Perry & Hylton Coal Company.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era.

Two brothers, Billy Akers and Johnny Akers and a sister, Audrey Like preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Trela Kay Evans Akers; one son, Roger Lee Akers and wife, Tabitha of Summersville; daughter, Susan Akers of Beckley; one brother, Zennith Akers and wife, Lucille of Chicago, Ill.; and four sisters, Mary Hatfield of Gilbert, Betty Bartlett of Kinard, Laura Jane Coffman and husband, Roger of Charlotte, N.C. and Barbara Arthur.

He is also survived by three grandchildren, Sarah Williamson, Jeffrey Akers and Emma Akers, all of Summersville.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Bowers Hospice House and David and Debbie Farley.

Funeral services will be on Friday, January 31, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope on Thursday, January 30, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Darrell Reed Haney Sr.

Darrell Reed Haney Sr., 77 of Whitesville, passed away Monday, January 27, 2014, at his home after a long illness.

He was born August 18, 1936, at Grayson, Ky., a son of the late Elbert and Melissa Payne Haney.

Darrell leaves behind his beloved wife of 44 years, Linda Kirk Haney; five sons, William Bruce Haney of Whitesville, Michael Franklin Haney of Fayetteville, Darrell Reed Haney Jr. of Crab Orchard, Gary Lee Haney of Ashland, Ky., and Timmy Wade Haney of Key West, Fla.; one daughter, Reedia Lorraine Haney of Ashland, Ky. and one step-daughter, Diana Lynn Williams of Comfort; one brother, William Lloyd Haney of Hudson Fla.; two sisters, Judy Callahan of London, OH, and Mabel Mayo of Circleville, OH; 12 grandchildren and three great granchildren.

Darrell was truly a devoted husband and a loving father to all his kids and grandkids. A veteran of the U.S. Army and a hard working coal miner for 36 years who worked inside and outside for Beckley Coal Co. and Performance Coal. He lost many friends at the UBB disaster and mourned their deaths.

He made many friends. On behalf of Darrell and his family we want to thank Kanawha Hospice Care and all the precious angels that they sent to help us from Madison. They are wonderful caregivers and truly a blessing in our time of need. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Kanawha Hospice Care at 1606 Kanawha Blvd, West Charleston, WV 25387.

Service will be 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. David Minturn officiating. Singer will be Randall Kirk. Mr. Haney’s request was for cremation following the service.

James Edward Hill

Mr. James Edward Hill, 72, of Beckley, died Friday, January 24, 2014.

Born August 10, 1941, in Beckley, he was the son of the late James Albert and Inez Udora Reynolds Hill.

Mr. Hill was a member of Faith Temple of Deliverance Church, Masonic Lodge in Rahawy, New Jersey, Senior League at Leisure Lane, Beckley, and The American Legion of Charleston, WV.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert Mark Hill, and also an unborn infant.

Left to cherish precious memories are: his loving wife, Evelyn Towles Hill; brothers, Ronald Ray (Verna) Hill of Bronx, NY, Mark Tyrone (Sarah Ann) Hill of Plainfield, NJ, Elder Rodney Keith (Tamara) Hill of Beckley, WV and Douglas Gregory Hill of Charleston, WV; sisters, Linda Faye (Eric) Tyler of Hickory, NC and Pasty Darnell (Robert) Pannell of Charleston, WV and a host of other relatives and friends.

Carl Hopkins Jr.  Garrick Lloyd Hopkins Sr.

MILTON — Carl Hopkins Jr., 61, of Oak Hill and Garrick Lloyd Hopkins Sr., 60, of Milton, both died Saturday, January 25, 2014.

Carl was born March 30, 1952, in Kaymoor Bottom and Garrick was born April 28, 1953, in Fayetteville, W.Va., they were the sons of Betty Jean Turner Hopkins of Fayetteville, and the late Carl Hopkins Sr.

In addition to their father, they were preceded in death by maternal grandparents, John and Gladys Turner and paternal grandparents, William and Althera Hopkins. Garrick was also preceded by a son, Tyron Hopkins and best friend, Percy Saunders.

Their siblings Gerald Hopkins and Linda Hopkins, both of Fayetteville, and Renee (Duane) Lewis of Morgantown, W.Va. survive them.

Carl was a coal miner, carpenter, mason, truck driver, mechanic, building maintenance manager, mine equipment machinist, and was a member of United Apostolic Faith Church, Beckley.

He is also survived by his loving devoted wife of 40 years, Sylvia; children, Carl (Deanna) Hopkins III of Atlanta, Ga. and Taryn (David) Foye of Elkton, Md.; grandchildren, Courtney and Christina Hopkins, Desiree Foye and Simone and Solomon Foye and his longtime good friend Frank Ortiz of Scarbro, W.Va.

Garrick worked at Columbia Gas, was a coal miner, rouster, contractor, and was a member of Second Baptist of Fayetteville.

He is also survived by his loving wife, Denise; children, Garrick Lloyd Hopkins II, Jheramie Corey Hopkins, Philecia Chevon Hopkins, Steven Bradford Sherer, and Kaitlyn Brown; 14 grandchildren; ex-wife, Belinda Tunstalle Hopkins; brother in-law Lonnie (Monica) Lester and mother in-law, Elouise Lester.

Joint funeral services will be 1 p.m., Friday, January 31, 2014, at Spirit and Truth Ministries, 100 Main Street West, Oak Hill, with District Elder Tim Schofield and Bishop Gary L. Brydie officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity. Friends may call two hours prior to the services at the church.

Lena Frances Lilly

Lena Frances Lilly, of Beckley, was met at Heaven’s Gate by her husband, parents, brothers and sister on January 25, 2014.  She was born February 15, 1925 in Stickney, WV. Her father was the late Anacleto (Joseph) Hernandez and mother Bessie Perry Plata both of Beckley. She was married 42 years to the late Roy Earl Lilly of Beckley. Frances was a retired employee of J.C. Penny Company of Beckley, where she worked for 35 years and took pride in every task she took on. At home, she loved to cook and had a heart of gold when it came to caring for all the little stray animals in the neighborhood. Since 2009 Frances lived at Life Care Centers of America in Winter Haven, Florida where she battled many health problems before her passing.

Frances is survived by her two daughters, Gloria Jean Allen of Auburndale, Florida and Diana Carol York of Dublin, Ohio. She has one son-in-law, William Allen of Auburndale, Florida; she is also survived by four grandchildren, Lisa Nolin, of Auburndale, Florida, Atty. William (Bill) Allen of Winter Haven, Florida, Atty. Daniel Preston Allen of Kansas City, MO and Selena Campbell of Richmond, Virginia; six great-grandchildren, Staci, Erika, Logan, Jordon, Preston, and Landon; three great-great-grandchildren, Conner, Lillian and Julianna.

Lena is preceded in death by her first husband, and the father of her two dauahgters Daniel Preston Gadd; brothers, William and James Hernandez of Beckley and a sister, Elizabeth of Chicago, IL.

Our mother and grandmother will be missed dearly. We know she is resting peacefully with her family and maker.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 1, 2014, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens

Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

James E. Lively

LANCASTER, Ohio — James “Jim” Eugene Lively, 82, of Lancaster, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 26, 2014.

Born June 6, 1931, in Danese, W.Va., he was the son of the late Myrtle (Lily) and Lamancha Lively. He was also preceded in death by brothers Gerald and Joseph.

He is survived by his wife, Bettie Miller Lively, whom he met on the day she was born. During their 63 years of marriage they also made their home in Marietta, Ohio, and Lecanto, Fla. He is also survived by his children, who never doubted his deep love for them: son David Lively and his wife, Amy, of Lancaster; and daughter Susan Smith and her husband, J. Scott Smith, of Rushville. His granddaughter, Emma Lively, was a truly special gift when she was born on their anniversary.

A Navy veteran who never failed to mention our servicemen and women in his prayers, Jim made his career in sales and management at Roberts Men’s Shop and many car dealerships in central Ohio. He especially enjoyed golfing with longtime friends from across the country.

Jim’s love for community was exhibited through civic involvement. He was a 50-year member of each of these organizations: Masonic Lodge No. 390 Marietta; Aladdin Shrine Columbus; worthy patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Marietta Chapter #59; and American Legion of Lancaster Post 11. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and was past-president of the Marietta Lions Club. Jim worshipped with his family at Life Church, Lancaster, Ohio.

A private burial will be held at Wallace Memorial Cemetery in Clintonville, with Pastor Ron Grubb officiating. There will be a public memorial service at Life Church on Thursday, February 6, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Life Church in Jim’s memory.

Throughout ongoing struggles with his health, Jim charmed his caregivers and continually praised God for His protection. Jim was a respected man of integrity who was beloved for his quick smile and gentle spirit. While his family misses him greatly, they rejoice that he is breathing freely, tinkering with motors and talking with Jesus face to face.

Wendell Grady Lusk

Wendell Grady Lusk, 72, of Daniels, went to be with the Lord on Monday,  January 27, 2014.

Born on March 29, 1941, at Cyclone, he was the son of the late Arvil Kester Lusk and Ettie Pearl Osborne Lusk.

Wendell served in the U.S. Army from November 1963 until November 1965. He worked in the coal mines for 19 years and retired as a salesman for Lance Inc. He was of the Baptist faith and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.

He enjoyed bowling, fishing, relaxing on his front porch talking with family, friends, and neighbors and especially loved singing and listening to Gospel music.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 29 years, Mary Angela Lusk, a son, Michael Scott Lusk, and two sisters, Shirley Lusk and Ella Jean Lusk Shields, and a nephew Randall Lacy Lusk.

Those left to cherish his memory are two daughters, Angela Lusk Bolen and her husband Jim of Meadow Bridge, Michele Lusk Toney and her husband Larry of Jefferson, Georgia, a brother, Lanta Lusk and his wife Donna of Cyclone, a sister, Jackie Helmandollar and her husband Russell of Cyclone; seven grandchildren, Cameron and Abby Lusk, Casey and Morgan Rash, Aaron Keys, Madison Jones and Hunter Toney; two step grandsons, David and Nick Bolen, two step granddaughters, Lyndsy and Karmen Toney, and nine nephews, Ronald, Timmy, Todd, Jamie, Carroll Gene, Wendy and Rodney Lusk, and Kevin and Chad Helmandollar.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Roger Stewart officiating, with a eulogy by Mason Whitt. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday.

Friends and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Marguerite Stennett Mabrey, 92, of Midway, went home to be with the Lord Monday, January 27, 2014 after a long illness.

Born August 11, 1921, in Mabscott, she was the daughter of the late George and Lena Allen Stennett.

Marguerite attended the Mark Twain School, she was a member of the Sophia Methodist Church. Marguerite enjoyed raising African violets and knitting.

In addition to her parents, Marguerite is preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Mabrey; son, Billy Mabrey.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Richard Mabrey and wife, Janie; granddaughters, Tammy Treadway and husband, Jeff, Cindy Stafford and husband, Steve; great-grandsons, Brandon, Josh and Matthew Treadway, Seth Stafford; sister, Juanita Fain and husband, Jim; a special niece, Melinda Proffitt and family; also sadly missed by caregivers, Regina  and Gail.

Christine Mary Hankins McKinney

On Monday, January 27, 2014, Christine Mary Hankins McKinney, 89, went to see her Lord and Savior at her home. She was loved and cherished by all who knew her.

Born on October 2, 1924, Christine was the daughter of the late John and Verna Young Hankins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Horace R. McKinney, three sisters, Eloise Steele, Elnora Hutton, and Maxine O’Neal, and a brother, Roy Hankins.

Christine married the love of her life on April 22, 1943 and raised two children. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and spent her life taking care of her family. She was a life-long (82 years in attendance) member of Amigo Missionary Baptist Church. She adored her church family and enjoyed the fellowship she shared with them.

Christine worked as a waitress then manager of a restaurant while living in Florida. She worked four years in the health care field. She was secretary of the Stephenson Grade School PTA while her children attended there. She was also the president of the channel 10 CB Club. She loved growing flower gardens and taking an evening stroll with her neighbor. Christine was awarded many blue ribbons for her delicious baking at the State Fair of WV. She loved to make homemade goodies, pies, and cakes from scratch. In her later years, she enjoyed talking on the phone to her best friend, Anne Hayworth.

Those left to cherish her memory include a son, Stephen R. McKinney and his wife, Cheryl, of Oak Hill; a daughter, Barbara Hardy and her husband, Kenneth, of Amigo;  three granddaughters, Amy Schwarz and her husband, John Thomas, of Oak Hill; Stacy Cozort and her husband, Bryan, of Amigo; Beth Lusk and her husband, Ben, of Amigo; one grandson, Ryan Cook; four great-grandchildren, Christian Marie Gabrielle and Christine Mary Grace Cozort, of Amigo and Kaleigh Nicole Schwarz and Jacob Tyler Schwarz, of Oak Hill; as well as many other family and friends.

Services will be noon, Friday, January 31, 2014, at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Curtis England and Rev. Gilbert Dodson officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Nora Lee Davis Warfield, 85, of White Sulphur Springs, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at Greenbrier Manor after a long illness.

She was born on Feb. 20, 1928, in Washington County, Pa., the daughter of the late Frank Davis and Agnes Davis.

Nora is survived by her husband of 40 years, Dr. Edwin H. Warfield; son, Ronald Chambers and wife, Marilyn; Marilyn Lewis and husband, Leo; step children, Dawn Knight and husband, Michael, Karin McGraw and husband Gary, Edwin Warfield II and wife, Felicia; grandchildren, Christina, Kevin and Ashley Chambers, Micah Wellhofer, Ryan Lewis, Amanda McGraw, Laura Sheets, Andrew and Rachel Knight; and great-grandchildren, Kaleigh, Lilly and Eli Wellhofer, Mary McGraw, Clay Lewis and Bradley Sheets.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Nora spent her working life as a dental assistant and was passionate about the part of her work that involved children.
