Edna Mae (Michael) Bergines
LANCASTER, Calif. — Edna Mae (Michael) Bergines, 77, passed away on January 19, 2014, in Lancaster.
She was born on October 10th, 1936, in Beckley, to Alex Michael and Mary (Corey) Michael.
Edna graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1954 and St. Mary’s School of Nursing in 1957, followed by work in Cleveland, Ohio and Beckley. She married William O. Bergines “Willie” in 1963 and moved to California in 1966. She retired in 2001, after a 40-year career as a Registered Nurse and mother of two, and moved from Anaheim, Calif. to Lancaster, to be closer to her daughter Barbara, and her family. Her passions were her four grandsons, dancing, cooking, quilting, West Virginia’s mountains and her dear friends on both east and west coasts.
She leaves behind her son, Michael William Bergines; daughter, Barbara Lynn (Bergines) Pruett, daughter-in-law Bibiana Castaneda, son-in-law James Pruett; grandsons, Kevin, Jason, Tomas and Nicolas; her brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Rene Michael, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held on January, 31st, 2014, at Central Christian Church in Lancaster, Calif., with Edna’s son-in-law Pastor James Pruett officiating.

Shirley Winona Crookshanks Birchfield
CRAG — Shirley Winona Crookshanks Birchfield, 70, of Crag, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2014, in the Charleston Area Medical Center.
Born March 11, 1943, at Crag, she was the daughter of the late Marvin and Faye Tincher Crookshanks.
Shirley worked as a mail carrier for many years. She enjoyed cooking and gardening. Many received her breads and fudge. Her favorite time of the day was sunrise, she used to hang clothes to dry as the sun came up. She attended Sewell Valley Baptist Church until she was no longer able to go.
Survivors include her loving husband of 53 years, Johnie O. Birchfield; three daughters Teresa F. Birchfield of Crag, Patricia M. Birchfield-Thomas and husband Jim of Boomer and Lisa L. Birchfield of Rainelle; one brother Donald Crookshanks and wife Olive of Rainelle; and grandchildren Nathaniel N. Harris-Birchfield of Crag, Joshua, Morgan and Nicole Thomas all of Boomer.
Shirley was buried at sunrise on Wednesday, January 22, in the Big Sewell Baptist Church Cemetery on Sewell Mountain, Rainelle.

Gary Randolph ‘Randy’ Carson
Mr. Gary Randolph “Randy” Carson, 62, of Beckley, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2014.
Born June 11, 1951, in Beckley, he was the son of the late William Hugh and Frances Oliveria Carson Sr., and preceded by a brother, William H. Carson Jr.
Randy served in the U.S. Air Force, worked at the Veterans Adminstration Medical Center, and was a member of Heart of God Ministries.
Left to cherish precious memories are: his loving wife, Nancy; two sons, Ricardo “Ricky” Swain (and his mother Hulda Swain) of Winder, Ga. and Charles Borders; one daughter, Erykah Starks and granddaughter, Trinity Martin both of Beckley; brothers, Elder Bruce (Nina) Carson of Minden, Phillip Carson of Beckley, Steven (Carla) Carson of Harper Heights and Derrick Carson of Beckley; sisters, Anita (George) Morton of Beckley and Mary (Moses) Hubert of Pickerton, Ohio, Linda (Walter) Robinson of Cross Lanes and Stephanie Carson of Phoenix, Ariz.; two uncles, Arthur Carson and Benjamin James Carson of Columbus, Ohio; one aunt, Mary Benson of Mt. Hope; mother-in-law, Ophelia Motley Belcher of Beckley; four brothers-in-law, Ronald (Cordelia) Mason of Beckley, Samuel (Mildred) Mason of Moreno Valley, Calif., Frank (Kathy) Motley of Beckley and Quincy A. Madison of Beckley; one sister-in-law, Victoria (Rodney) Davis of McLeansville, N.C.; special friends, Donald Thompson, Jacqueline Cousins, James Fink, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at Heart of God Ministries, 1703 S. Kanawha St., Beckley, with Bishop Dr. Fred T. Simms officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Catherine ‘Cab’ Claytor
Catherine “Cab” Claytor, age 95, of Beaver, passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at the Raleigh Center in Daniels.
Catherine was born on October 16, 1918, at Ansted, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late Hollie and Alice Ferguson Claytor.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Irene Carte, Ruth Gray, Mary Coleman, and Helen Massie, and by a brother, Alvin Claytor. She was also preceded in death by several nieces and nephews.
Survivors include a sister, Virginia Claytor of Beaver, and many nieces and nephews.
She was of the Baptist faith.
The family extends special thanks to the Raleigh Center, especially to Joy.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Friday, January 24, 2014, at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Bill Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.
Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services on Friday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be John Sweeney, Denny Burgess, Dakota Robertson, Charlie Ellison, David Phelps, and Al Coleman.

Brian Lee Emerson Duckett Sr.
RAINELLE — Brian Lee Emerson Duckett Sr., 61, of Lilly Park, died suddenly from injuries received in an automobile accident, early Tuesday morning, Jan. 21, 2014.
Born Aug. 9, 1952, in Rainelle, he was the son of the late Harold and Ruth Virginia Anderson Duckett.
Brian was a carpenter, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and of the Christian faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Duckett.
Survivors include two sons: Michael Lee Duckett of Tennessee and Brian Lee E. Duckett Jr. of Maryland; a sister, Anita Osthagen of Rainelle; a brother, Harold Curtis Duckett Jr. and wife, Tammy Shaffer of Indiana; and a grandson, Alex Duckett of Tennessee.

Gerald ‘Jed’ Ashley Fleshman
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Memorial service for Gerald “Jed” Ashley Fleshman, 90, will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 25, 2014, at Kilbourne Park Baptist Church.
Mr. Fleshman died Sunday, January 19, 2014. Born in Beckley, W.Va., he was a son of the late Mayson C. Fleshman and Mattie H. Michael Fleshman.
Mr. Fleshman served his country during World War II while in the Navy, he was a high school business teacher for over 30 years and was a member of the Kilbourne Park Baptist Church where he served in many capacities.
Surviving are his son, Gerald “Jerry” A. Fleshman II of Winston Salem, N.C.; daughter, Susan Fleshman Manship of Alexandria, Va. and their families.
In addition to his wife, Cylene “Sally” Perry Fleshman, he was predeceased by his brother, Jim Fleshman.

BELLBURN — Bonnie L. Ford, 71, of Bellburn, passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at her home.
Bonnie was the wife of Arnold Ford Sr. They were married for 53 years before his passing in 2012.
Born March 12, 1942, at Bellburn, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Curtis and Dexter Cunningham Minor.
Bonnie was a loving and dedicated daughter, wife, and mom. In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by her sisters, Merle Barstow, Lenora Young and Ada Childers and brothers, Bob, Bill, Jim, Jack, Joe, Freddy and Eddie Minor.
Those left to cherish her memory are her four children: Phillip “Pete” and wife, Cindy, Arnold Jr. (Sabrina), and Tammy and Tommy; seven grandchildren, Peggy Deskins, Brian Loudermilk, Matt Ford and wife, Jamie, Jarred Ford and wife, Allison, Cassandra Howell and husband, Levi, Savannah Ford and Kenny and Kendall Ford; five great-grandchildren, Amber, Hunter, Peyton, Makaylee, and Jacob; two sisters, Pearl Persinger and Anice Skaggs; two brothers, Aubrey and Frank Minor.
Bonnie’s life was spent taking care of and loving her family. She spent many years caring for her mother before she passed away in 1986. There are no words to express the gratitude that is felt for the loving, end-of-life care that was given by Sabrina McKinney. A special blessing was given to our family for the care Sabrina and Matt Ford, (Bonnie’s grandson), provided for our most precious Mom and Mamaw. Bonnie will be missed by many friends, neighbors, and extended family. Thanks to all of you for what you did.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Margaret Odessa Smith Leftwich
HINTON — Margaret Odessa Smith Leftwich, 94, of 207 Miller Ave., Hinton, died at 5 p.m. Friday, January 10, 2014, at Beckley A.R.H. Hospital after a short illness.
Born November 5, 1919, at Talcott, she was the daughter of the late James Alonzo and Awilda Jane Spence Smith.
Mrs. Leftwich was a 1937 graduate of Talcott High School. She and her family operated a poultry farm at Forest Hill and delivered eggs in Summers and surrounding counties. She later was a sales associate at Hinton Hardware in Hinton.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Cecil James, Randall Malcolm and John Henry Smith. Also by two sisters, Ruth Jane Jones and Corabelle “Susie” Hanna.
Survivors include three sons, David Leftwich and wife Alva Jean of Forest Hill, Richard S. Leftwich and wife Gemma of Hinton and Steven Del Leftwich and wife Kathryn of Charleston, W.Va. Six grandchildren, Katherine Leftwich of Forest Hill, Daniel Leftwich and wife Miku of Athens, Alfonso Leftwich and Crystal of Hinton, James Leftwich of Hinton, Brendon Stennett of Charleston and John Leftwich of Charleston. Three great grandchildren, A.J., Max and Callie Leftwich.
Per her request, the body has been cremated and memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 26, 2014, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton, with Father Bonaventure Lucier and Father Rey Landicho officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. on the day of the service. Following the services at Pivont Funeral Home, a reception will follow at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Hinton.

Zelma Elaine “Sissy” Craigo Reid , 64, of Maple Fork, went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at Hilltop Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Hilltop, after a long illness.
Born January 12, 1950, at War, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Burl and Elberta Johns Craigo.
She was a homemaker.
Sissy attended the Mount Hope First Assembly of God.
A brother, Richard Craigo preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, John Earl Reid; one daughter, Nona McGuire and husband, Brian of South Sand Branch; two brothers, Ted Craigo, Sr. and Carol of Beckley and Terry Vanbuskirk of Oak Hill; a sister, Sandy Calvert of Oak Hill and sisters-in-law, Barbara Ruff and husband, Kenneth, Dana Stump and husband, Steve, Kelly Graham and husband, Jimmy and Jean Craigo.
She is also survived by three grandchildren, MacKenzie McGuire, Cody McGuire and Meghan McGuire; mother-in-law, Peggy Ruff; special family friend, Sister Leona Bonifacio and several special nieces and nephews.
